The first thing Mirabel felt was a pounding headache. She couldn't focus on anything but the pain she felt. Mirabel's head was killing her, so Mirabel didn't notice someone chained her hands above her head. She also didn't realize that she had a gag in her mouth.
After a handful of hours, Mirabel finally came around. She tried to scream out, but all her screams came out muffled. "Don't do that," a masculine voice demanded. A male who looked a handful of years older than Isabela yanked the gag out of Mirabel's mouth.
"Who are you?" Mirabel muttered. "Where am I?"
The man yanked her hair. "You're where you belong," he said.
A month into her kidnapping, the man revealed his motive. He became obsessed with Mirabel when he moved to Encanto. He was also a "family disappointment." So, he decided Mirabel was his. He built himself a soundproof house, giving Mirabel hope that maybe they were still in the Encanto.
Mirabel found a daily routine. She would be fed twice a day and allowed to use the bathroom once. He'd hurt her at least once a day. Mirabel never stopped crying. He would hit her whenever he acted up in his mind.
Five more months passed. Mirabel could tell that the first snow of winter had fallen. There was a small window in her room. Mirabel thought she must be dehydrated as she saw her mother in the doorway.
Julieta walked to her daughter. "Oh, mi querida mariposa," Julieta whispered. "Mamá is here. She's in this room!"
Julieta smothered Mirabel's face with kisses. They were gentle and sweet kisses. Mirabel tried to say something, but she couldn't move her lips. Luisa snapped the chains wrapped around Mirabel's hands, freeing them.
Julieta wrapped her daughter in a blanket. Luisa, with ease, lifted her baby sister into her arms. "You're safe now," Luisa whispered.
"Isabela and Pepa are dealing with Julian," Julieta said. "We should get her home."
Mirabel's head leaned against her older sister's chest. Julieta took her daughter's hand into her own. Julian. That was the first time Mirabel had heard her kidnapper's name. He had never told her his name during the half a year she was his prisoner.
Mirabel shivered as Luisa carried her out of the house. The sun bathed her in bright light. Mirabel never realized how much she had missed it.
