Prompt: Coffee/Movie (2022)
Onodera Ritsu was startled awake as his blanket was pulled off of him and a deep, familiar voice said, "Hey, get up."
Ritsu blinked and squinted against the sunlight coming in through his window, glaring as best he could at Takano Masamune, though his expression mostly read as confusion.
It was their day off, so there was really no reason for Ritsu to be awake before eleven. Not to mention, how was Takano-san even in his apartment in the first place?! He certainly hadn't spent the night last night!
"What the hell are you doing in here?" Ritsu demanded.
"We're going on a date, come on, get up, I'll make you breakfast." Masamune tossed the blanket to the foot of the bed.
Ignoring that ridiculous statement, Ritsu clarified, "How did you get in here?!"
"You left your door unlocked, which you're in trouble for. Its cute when you're an airhead, but not when it risks your safety. Any sick pervert could've walked in here, you know." Masamune said matter-of-factly.
"Yeah, he just did!" Ritsu gestured toward Masamune in a frustrated fashion.
Masamune scoffed. "You should have taken extra care to lock your front door then, considering I'm right next door."
"Just get out! You can't invite yourself into my home like this!" Ritsu huffed as he sat up and grabbed the blanket, laying back down and pulling it over his head.
Masamune started to pull at it again, but Ritsu held on tight, locking them into a state of tug-o-war.
"Come on, its finally our day off and I want to spend it with you." Masamune said as he continued to try to take the blanket off him.
"And I want to spend it asleep! Let go before you rip my blanket!"
Masamune sighed, but relinquished and Ritsu laid on his side so his back was to Masamune with the blanket still covering him completely.
"Now if you would please show yourself out, Takano-san." Ritsu huffed. For a moment there was nothing and Ritsu hoped that Masamune had snuck out quietly, but eventually he felt a dip in weight on the bed as Masamune sat down beside him. Ritsu fought against the urge to groan in annoyance.
"I just want us to be normal for a day." Masamune said.
Ritsu's irritation fizzled out for just a moment, being replaced with curiosity. He popped his head out from under the blanket and looked at Masamune. "What are you talking about?"
"Obviously this isn't the normal way to go about going on a date with you, but I knew if I tried it the 'normal way' we'd never do anything." Masamune explained. "I want to be able to have breakfast with you and go see a movie later without our past or our work or the confession hanging over heads." He continued. "Don't get me wrong, I love your usual attitude and the cat and mouse game can be fun, but...I miss you. I want to spend the day with you. I want to have fun together. You know, like a normal couple. And if you hate it that much then we can go back to our usual routine tomorrow."
Ritsu watched him quietly, Masamune staring off elsewhere in order to avoid eye contact as he treaded somewhere near vulnerability. The words 'we are not a couple' hung off the edge of Ritsu's lips, but he sighed instead of correcting Masamune.
"Fine."
Masamune looked at Ritsu, a hint of surprise coloring his features. "Fine?"
"Get out, let me shower and get dressed and you can get started on the breakfast you offered. You can't take it back now." Ritsu pushed the blanket off of him to sit up and stretch a little.
Masamune watched him, waiting for Ritsu to say 'sike!' and dive back under the covers. However, Ritsu rolled out of bed and went over to his closet, still swaying a bit from sleep.
"Do you even have anything I can cook here?" Masamune asked as Ritsu deliberated between shirts.
"There's probably something. Unless you're not up for a challenge." Ritsu replied, letting the disapproving silence linger for a moment as he felt Masamune's gaze lasering through the back of his head. "There's eggs in the fridge." Ritsu said, trying not to let his amusement peek through his voice. Yes, Masamune easily got under Ritsu's skin, but sometimes Ritsu knew how to mess with him back.
"There better be eggs." Masamune said as he stood from the bed and went behind Ritsu, planting a kiss on the back of his head. "There better be more than eggs." He added. "I swear, you got lucky that we ran into each other again. You'd keel over if I wasn't here."
Ritsu managed to refrain from recoiling away from the kiss, taking a deep breath and telling himself that they were going to be normal today. Well, whatever their version of normal would be. Their version of normal, Ritsu decided, wouldn't be totally devoid of any and all attitude. That wouldn't feel right for them at all. So, he rolled his eyes and pushed on Masamune's chest to try to get him to back off a bit. "Go away, let me get ready without you breathing down my neck."
Masamune-of course-did not listen and instead opted to swoop in for a brief, gentle kiss. "I love you."
Ritsu tensed and his face bloomed bright red, but he managed not to shriek at the display of affection. "...yeah." He breathed out. "Go. Breakfast." He pushed on Masamune's chest again, making Masamune smile a little as he started backing up.
"Should I put on a pot of coffee?"
"Of course." Ritsu snipped. "Why would you even ask me that?"
Masamune made his exit then, much to Ritsu's relief as he finished gathering his clothes for the day.
Normal, I can do normal, I can be normal with Takano-san, Ritsu repeated the mantra to himself, but it didn't help much as Ritsu could already feel his heart racing from the prospect of spending the day with Masamune.
It's just breakfast and a movie, it's no big deal.
Being 'normal' with Masamune in private was much easier than in public. Yes, in private Ritsu still had the instinct to run away and hide in order to avoid Masamune at any and all costs, but he could suppress it. Masamune made it much more difficult to do that in public with his insistence they hold hands and stick close the whole time.
"What if someone sees?" Ritsu whispered, trying to discreetly wiggle his way out of Masamune's grip as they walked in the direction of the movie theater, but it was to no avail.
"Do you think normal couples worry about other people seeing them hold hands?" Masamune asked, way too loud for Ritsu's liking.
"I think it's pretty common for couples like us, Takano-san." Ritsu pointed out.
Instead of letting go, Masamune held on tighter and started to grin. "So you admit we're a couple."
Ritsu finally wrenched his hand away at that. "Don't push your luck." He warned, walking a little ahead of him, not that Masamune would ever let him get far (at least, not ever again).
The two of them had already discussed what movie they would see over breakfast, and somehow Masamune convinced Ritsu to see a romantic-comedy that had recently come out. Ritsu was surprised Masamune was even interested in that kind of film, but then again he was the one who went on about being lovey dovey together, so maybe it shouldn't have been that shocking.
He better not be expecting something ridiculous like me getting so moved by the movie that I confess, Ritsu started to think, but quickly stopped himself. Masamune had said it earlier this morning, today was not the day to be fretting over the details of their at-odds-relationship. Today was just about having fun.
Ritsu walked into the theater with Masamune only a step or two behind him.
"I got it this time." Masamune said as he pulled out his wallet and went ahead to the ticket booth.
Ritsu bit his tongue, keeping himself from insisting on paying for his own ticket. He'd hate to 'owe' Masamune anything, but just for today he'd let this nonsense happen. I don't even know why I agreed to this, but if I back out now I will never hear the end of it, Ritsu thought.
They skipped concessions, going to the theater and gravitating toward the seats in the back. They settled in and waited for the remaining previews to be over. This isn't so bad, Ritsu told himself as he tried to relax. At least he wouldn't be expected to attempt to carry a conversation.
Masamune's hand found Ritsu's again, making Ritsu's heart jump in his throat at the unexpected contact.
This is fine, Ritsu told himself, it's dark in here and no one's going to look at us anyway. He hesitantly gave Masamune's hand a squeeze.
Tomorrow they'd be back to Ritsu's constant running away and Masamune's persistent plight of pushing his way into what was left of Ritsu's heart. Tomorrow Ritsu would deny the way he willingly intertwined his fingers with Masamune's and he'd pretend like the decision to agree to this date was the result of not having had his coffee yet. Tomorrow Ritsu would smother himself with his pillow as he remembered the way Masamune stole a kiss the moment the lights further dimmed to signal that the movie was starting. But, being normal, even if only for a day, was nice.
Not that Ritsu was ever going to admit that out loud.
