Suddenly a siren blared out within the village. *BEEP* *BEEP* *BEEP* I pinched my skin as to make sure it's not a dream and sure enough it wasn't. I could faintly hear a scream coming back through the halls and rushed forwards. 'Please be okay, Yugito!'

~~~~~~~~~Chapter Start~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I ran through the halls as fast as I could and soon was in front of the library, its door was busted open, and I flung it open without thinking 'You can't be going too, right? Even my own self said you would stay!' I thought while running towards the table we were at. Yugito wasn't there, the sirens were still bleeping, Yugito wasn't there, where had she gone?
My mind was racing as I ran out into the hallway again but not before getting a look at the village. It was burning, there were people running through the open and being systematically slaughtered, and the entire city was alight, like the brightest lantern in a festival.
I ran through every classroom looking for Yugito until I ran into our room, room 106, there were scorch marks over the walls and Yugito's shoes were thrown off in front of a broken window, the glass was outside so she must have escaped, but it didn't make sense, why only this room? 'They must know about Yugito' I thought while jumping through the window myself. There was blood lining the ground and it was still wet, I followed the trail around the school yard before finding Yugito's quivering form behind a bush near the walls of the academy.
"Yugi? Are you ok?" I asked while reaching towards her. Her head snapped up immediately and her eyes were just like his. Her dark eyes had become a maroon colour with black dots circling the iris, she grabbed my arm and ran past me to the gates where I saw the sight of hundreds of corpses around the streets with dark shadows running across the rooftops. I grabbed back my hand and puked on the floor; I didn't care about what had happened, but it felt natural to do it.
I looked up from the floor and Yugito's face was split with a Cheshire like grin that stirred me up. I ran away as fast as I could, but she chased me, we darted through the streets and more of the shadows started to pass by me. I tried to run straight through the village gate but was grabbed by my shoulder, I crumpled to the ground and huddled my head, it was filled with static and hurt so much. I tried to scream but no voice came out as I coughed blood and soon, I couldn't see due to the red liquid filling my eye sockets. I was dragged back into the shadows and fell unconscious.
The next morning
I woke up and looked around. I was in bed, who placed me here? At that point Yugito stirred next to me with a worried look plastered on her face. "Shin? What happened yesterday? We walked home together, and you suddenly ran out to look for me and were brought back by the gate guards past 10:00pm. Are you alright?" I looked towards her and saw that grin, those sharp teeth, maroon eyes, plastered all over her caring face, but it made me recoil on instinct which she noticed.
"Shin you are not leaving this room today. I will tell the matron to come check on you in a while. Now get some sleep its just after 3" she said while yawning. I laid back down and stared at the ceiling 'that wasn't a dream, it couldn't have been'. I flicked open the window and looked outside, everything was fine now. The lights were on, and I could hear people cheering from the bar across the street.
I attempted to climb out and investigate but was stopped by Yugito grabbing my ankle. "Shin did you not hear what I just said?" her voice taking a demonic tone as her eyes shifted to that colour again, I recoiled in fear again and stepped backwards… out of the window.
As I fell down, I used my taijutsu style to half flip, landing on my feet before stumbling backwards and hitting my head against the trunk of a tree. "Oh shit, Shin!" Yugito called out while running out of her room and out the back towards me.
"You have taken a small amount of damage -20 hp!"
'Small amount my ass' I thought while rubbing my head. Yugito ran over to me and kneeled down, "Shin, are you alright?" she said in a caring tone. Her face was calming to me, I stopped running my head and smiled at her "Yeah, I'm fine. Just slipped a bit is all" I said while standing up, which Yugito copied. "Let's get back inside so we can get more rest before school, it is our first day in the 3rd year class after all hehe." I said while laughing sheepishly. "I guess…" She murmured back and we headed into our room and laid in bed. "Shin, tell me if you need anything okay?" Yugito said before flipping her back towards me. "Sure." I replied while trying to fall asleep. "But will you really tell her" Was all I heard before drifting off.
I woke up early that morning at 5:00 am, Yugito was already awake and laying next to me. "Hey, Yugi? Can I speak to the cat?" I said sheepishly while she stared blankly at me. "Why?" Was all she said while I got into position, "will you let me or is that private?" I replied, ignoring her question. She also got into position, and we started to meditate.
We entered the shared mindscape, and I added some details to mine before heading towards the hills. "Yo! Matatabi" I greeted while waving my hand. She scowled at me before lying down. "What is it? The girl said you wanted to talk to me" She growled while I sat down across from her. "Question. Is your fur hot?" I said jockingly and she growled again. "Stop with the games, human, what did you want?" She said, getting impatient. "Well since you don't really care about me, I wanted your advice." I said while looking at my fingernails.
"Spit it out already or I'll call her back so she can hear instead." Matatabi replied while grinning. I shivered a bit and said, "Is there any way somebody could make a genjutsu or illusion that couldn't be escaped by pain?" I replied quickly. "It should be possible from a master, but I don't see how that relates to me in any way." She stated while stretching her legs. "Well, you have a lot more experience than me, having lived for thousands of years and I also wanted another chance to speak to you." I said nonchalantly while lying backwards on the grass, trying to find a comfortable position. "Stop shifting around human, is there anything else you want, or can I get back to sleep?" I snickered at that and replied "can you set up something with Yugi so you can share her senses? It might give you a better idea on what I mean and also you may become friends" before throwing up a peace sign and fading from the mindscape. "Foolish human, I don't even need to share senses to tell you are in turmoil. Kurama could do it with his eyes closed as well" Matatabi sighed before going back to sleep.
Yugito stretched her arms and said, "How come you wanted to speak to her and not me?" I simply replied "its private" before getting off the bed and walking into the kitchen downstairs to prepare breakfast for everyone.
2 Hours later
I waltzed into my new classroom with Yugito by my side before Ramu stopped us. "Sup brats, come down to the front and introduce yourselves." He said while gesturing towards the podium at the bottom of the class. Yugito started with her introduction and got stares from some kids. I was up next and yawned into my hand "My name is Shin; I like to train and dislike wasting my time. I don't really have a dream right now; I hope we can be friends." I said while finding a seat next to Yugito at the middle right section of the class.
"Alright kids, today we are doing theory before your extracurricular lessons, so let's get started." Ramu barked while flipping through a textbook. At this point my mental fatigue caught up to me and I went to sleep. It was nearly 2 hours later when I was awoken by Yugito for extracurricular lessons.
"Alright kids here is the schedule for extra classes, anyone who didn't choose any can bug off now." He handed a stack of sheets to each of the front tables, and they were passed back. None of my choices conflicted so I went to the class that was soon to start, kenjutsu.
I arrived at the room, and it was surprisingly big for being in the academy grounds. "Ah, the first one has arrived I see." A tall woman said while strutting towards me, she had black hair that reached to her shoulders and dark purple eyes, her face was sharp, and she wore a deep purple battle kimono with several shape patterns.
"You look a bit young, but since you went to this room on time, I'm assuming you are here for the class?" She said while looking me up and down. "This class isn't very popular as most shinobi pick up kenjutsu as a chunin or higher. There should be one more from what I heard so we should wait for her." We waited for all of 30 seconds before starting, "waiting is boring so let's pick you a weapon that fits, just grab something you like the look of, and we can test for feels." She commented while picking up a blade that was lying against a table and giving it a few swings and retrieving the sheath from a holster on the wall.
I looked around the room and saw a few weapons that caught my eye, there was a small tanto adorned with a black bandage on the hilt and a shining silver blade with ripples flowing along the edge. Another weapon was a larger sword that had a longer handle with a proper guard and a curved blade. It had a small red tassel on the bottom of its hilt, and the handle was a darker wood colour.
The final weapons that caught my interest were very similar in that they were too big for me, but one was a spear and the other, a bo, I had experience with none of these weapons, but they were the ones that called out to me. I first grabbed the tanto to feel its weight, something about it just wasn't right though. I thought it was the blade, it was too short for my liking and not having a guard was quite alarming. I quickly put it back and grabbed the curved dao, this was much better in my hands but had too much weight on the guard and even with my strength it felt almost lazy in my hand.
I grabbed the bo next and held it in a basic stance, one end near my head and the other facing the ground at an angle. It felt good but its length was a bit too much for me at this age and I put it back, not grabbing the spear for the same reason. I then threw my arrogance at being different to the wind and picked up the basic katana, the one in my hand had a blood red cloth rapped around its handle with a golden tsuba that would protect my hands. The blade was beautiful and fit me quite nicely in terms of size, I turned the blade towards my face horizontally and looked at my reflection. Over my shoulder a blank hand creeped around towards my heart, I rapidly turned around and slashed outwards, forgetting where I was, and the strike was blocked from my new teacher.
"Good reflexes runt, though I wish you weren't so enthusiastic about killing your teacher, guess the other one is a no show so we will be flying solo for a while. My name is Kuri, call me whatever you want since I don't like that formality shit." Kuri commented before taking two steps back.
"I am assuming you don't have a style yet so I am going to test where you are at, take one of these and we shall spar. Do what feels comfortable to get started then I will guide you." She continued before throwing me a bamboo sword, which I caught in my left hand while placing down the katana on the ground next to me.
I got into a basic kendo stance I remember from the stuff I watched in my old world, we then both rushed forward with me attempting a few quick slashes from my right side down towards my left, before jumping backwards and dashing towards Kuri's right as I slid under her horizontal slash and swiped upwards towards her wrist. She brought her arm back in response and blocked before pushing me backwards and off my feet, I released one hand from my weapon and planted my right hand on the ground while still falling, in an act of agility I pivoted on my hand before jumping off of it over a leg sweep and, now facing her slashed downwards towards her head. She swiftly brought up her bamboo sword to block and grabbed my collar with her left hand and throwing me behind her.
'All the misty fist training actually helped' I mused while landing on the ground softly, seeing my teacher's back towards me I rushed forward and soon found her sword placed against my neck. "You are pretty good, but I didn't say this was only a kenjutsu spar, you fell for a simple clone technique" She snickered while the clone jutsu faded.
I was surprised at how well I did and the praise I got, before turning my head upwards and grinning. "How much time is left in the lesson Kumi-san?" I said while tapping the bamboo sword on the ground. "We still got about 30 minutes so I will be showing you a few basic forms for my preferred style, the haze sword technique." I gasped in response, and she looked at me weirdly, "something wrong with that" she snarled, and I backed up. "No, no I was just thinking about how everything is falling into place for me is all." I replied cheekily before continuing, seeing her raised eyebrow. "I just started learning the misty fist style and was going to look for the scroll on the haze sword technique after our lesson."
She laughed a bit before saying "guess the heavens really shine on you kid, I use this style because since I was born with a pretty shit physique I rely on speed and momentum to land hits on my opponents, it's the only thing holding me back from ascending to full jonin rank… sadly I wont ever get that promotion but I don't mind, especially with the war going on, teaching kids like you is a bit more preferable than fighting every day." She finished with a longing look on her face, "Anyways enough with the sappy shit lets get you started on the style. Here is the scroll if I am ever absent and feel free to lose it since I learned everything from there a while ago."
"I will be sure to take that into account while I am using it as fuel for my campfire" I chuckled before stashing it in my pocket, pressing the 'Y' button that had popped up to make it disappear.
"Skill 'Haze sword technique' level 1 unlocked!"
I checked the skill details while Kuri went out to grab something from the staff office.
"Skill 'Haze sword technique' level 1"
"Utilises speed and chakra to blur the user's blade and attack multiple vital spots at a rapid pace, there was once a stronger version of this technique, but it was lost to time.
Uses 1 stamina per second to activate
Grants 25% to the user's movement speed while activated
Grants a 10% attack speed bonus to the user while activated
?
?"
'There are two more functions, but I can't read them, maybe I need to level it up? Or unlock the evolved technique? Food for thought' I contemplated while checking out more of the room. It had wooden floorboards and weapons lining the walls in front of dark wooden walls. At the end of the room there was a small painting where below it a beautiful sword was encased in its sheath. The sheath was decorated with the same pattern as Kuri's kimono, and it had a black tsuba decorated with lavender coloured flowers. I didn't dare touch it, but I looked into the painting above it.
"You have found another key location! 'Kotemizu legacy' 3 more remain to unlock a portion of the map"
I had completely forgotten about that feature, but it was weird that this was a key location and not the orphanage or the academy, while I thought about this this Kuri walked back in and saw what I was looking at. "Pretty nice isn't it kid? I probably wouldn't specialise in kenjutsu if it wasn't for these things, they may just look like a painting and a sword but to me they are irreplaceable possessions." Kuri said with a happy expression. "Alright, lets go for a round 2!"
We both stood on opposite sides of the wooden boards and started our fight; I immediately activated my 'haze sword technique' skill as we met blades, I knew I would lose a power struggle, so I backed off and let the system carry my body through various techniques. I remembered them well enough and soon stopped relying on it to guide my strikes, as we were about to clash again I ducked under Kuri's sword and struck upwards in a wheel motion, knocking her sword away before she jumped back. 'If I can't catch her normally lets do something new' I thought while getting into a ready stance "Kuri-san any secrets you want to divulge about applying chakra to your muscles?" I asked tauntingly while activating my dojutsu, my chakra changing into a gas like fluid that flowed easily through my body. Then on top of that I poured a small amount of chakra into my muscles, ignoring the new skill notification.
My chakra and my stamina would slowly drain from all 3 of these being activated but I didn't care, I was gonna put this teacher on the ropes. I let Kuri get her sword again before vanishing from my previous position to attempt a horizontal slice, Kuri quickly parried it before planting a firm kick into my defenceless torso. I flew backwards and skidded across the ground before getting up and smirking, I put a sliver more chakra into my muscles and burst forward in newfound speed.
As I bounded towards her, Kuri got into a stance I didn't recognize before rushing towards me at equally fast speeds, I attempted a barrage of slashes from various angles but was met masterfully by Kuri's sword. I noticed her stance was open on her left side and went for a circle slash as I slid behind her, she got hit in the back and clicked her tongue before launching an insane number of thrusting attacks from her stance. I got hit by more than 17 and was out for the count.
"Flooding your muscles with chakra isn't a good idea kid, especially if you aren't used to it. Congrats on landing a hit though, see you tomorrow." She said while picking me up by my shirt and throwing me into the hallway.
'How kind' I thought while heading towards my next class, ninjutsu. The ninjutsu class was by far the most popular and when I got there, there were already 12 kids waiting for the teacher besides me. I sat down at the front before the teacher came in and looked around me, I saw Yugito in the corner chatting with 2 other girls happily and I smiled at that before turning forwards again as the door slammed open.
"Afternoon students, I am Judas and will be your ninjutsu teacher!" Judas shouted loudly as he walked in, he had bright red hair and thick eyebrows. His eyes were jasper, and he wore a black jumpsuit with his white kumo flack jacket on the outside.
He strut into the room holding a large scroll and slammed it on the floor by one of its ends. "HAHAHA, inside of this scroll are 40 different ninjutsu of all types, you can pick out one each and learn from it. Once you have completed your jutsu place back the scroll and come to me for another task, you have 1 week to complete the jutsu and showcase it for the class!" He yelled while unfurling the scroll. "The scrolls with yellow sides are lightning, brown for earth and I'm sure you can figure out the rest!" Judas finished while pointing at each stack of scrolls.
After he finished all of the students jumped out of their chairs and raced to the front with Judas watching nearby with a large smile on his face. I sat back and waited for each person to pick up a scroll before walking down the middle of the room and fetching a lightning scroll. "You can all go outside now!" Judas said while opening the door in a flamboyant manner as students rushed through to the outside.
I sighed and followed them outside, before being stopped by Judas. "You, what's your name?" He said in an uncharacteristically calm tone. "Shin, is there something you need sensei?" I replied in a monotone voice before he barked out a laugh "I haven't taught you anything yet so don't call me that! If you want to talk about anything I'm here. I have been told I am surprisingly observant of people so I can tell when something is off. Me and all the other staff here are able to help." He said while releasing his hand from my shoulder.
"Thank you, but I assure you I am fine." I said while turning away and heading outside leaving Judas to his own thoughts. I opened up my scroll while walking and read the name out loud "Lightning style: thunder spear" its description with the instructions said it was a C - rank jutsu which surprised me greatly but not as much as it said the chakra poured into it could be made into A – rank with enough.
There were 4 hand seals and I had to hold my hand out horizontally to grasp it. When I arrived outside, I performed the hand seals, and a small spark came from my hand that extended into a senbon sized needle of pure lightning chakra. It was so fucking cool I immediately threw it into a tree, and it made a crackle before disappearing, leaving a small hole in the tree that went a few centimetres deep.
"You have learned a jutsu without the help of the system, you have received 2 points in intelligence for your efforts!"
"You have levelled up! You have gained 5 stat points and 1 skill point"
'I haven't even used the skill tree yet oh shit, I must have at least 40 points considering my level' I thought while putting the points into vitality. I opened up the skill tree and unlocked the centre circle for 0 points and 3 branches lit up. I pressed on the 4th one that didn't and a message popped up.
"You can not access the world tree until you have learned the skill '?' through formal training in the arts"
I ignored the message and checked out the other trees. There were 3 and each had their own skills and passives associated with them, the ones I could access are the physical, chakra, and spiritual skill trees. I opted towards checking out the physical tree first and read through several small boosts that summed up to 'get more stamina' or 'get more health' before I saw a few skills that collided with the chakra tree on top of it.
The physical tree in itself was shaped like a fist that faced upwards, on the top of it was the chakra branch that was shaped like an actual tree. The skills there relied on having the preceding points spent on both trees leading up to those upgrades. The 4 skills that collided were very interesting, perfect chakra enhancement, chakra sensing, limit breaking, sage's mind and body. I couldn't see the details, but the skills were mostly self-explanatory, I hypothesised that limit breaking had something to do with the chakra limiters the 8 gates unleashed, and the sage stuff was to do with senjutsu, but they were just guesses.
The spiritual tree was more to do with my bloodline and abilities the system gave rather than my physical body like the other 2. Some examples of this were the skills 'blood manipulation' and 'ketsuryugan stage 2' which I had no idea even existed. They were in the middle of the skill tree so there was still more after it but even those 2 sounded amazing, my dojutsu right now was pretty strong with just the charka control, I didn't even know the genjutsu and jutsu it was known for.
I had 40 points to spend because of my level and put 10 into the physical tree, adding 10% to my stamina and hp and unlocking the passive skill 'growing body' which gave me some extra height over time and allowed me to build up muscle easier but that would help later when I started to try and build some muscle.
I put 20 points into the chakra tree and gained a 20% buff to my reserves and recharge rate and also the passive skill 'chakra fiend' which gave me even more chakra! An extra 30% on top of the other 20% buff and it was upgradeable into chakra beast which gave 50% more reserves but that required something else that I couldn't see 'I hate those stupid question marks' I thought while scrolling over to the spiritual tree, I put in the remaining 10 points to gain a small resistance to mental attacks and the strengthening of my bloodline, increasing its chakra control boost from +20 to +30. After closing the tree, I felt stronger, you know the boost is big when you can physically feel it in your body. The only thing that made me a bit sad was that all of the bonuses got stacked at the same time, so I got 50% instead of the greater boost of 20% first then 30%.
I activated my eyes and spoke quietly while facing the same tree. I poured a tenth of my chakra reserves into the jutsu "Lightning style: Thunder spear" A much larger spear of electricity as large as my arm was formed in my hand as I threw it straight through the tree. Due to the discharge of electricity, it overloaded the tree and exploded.
Judas heard the explosion and flickered in front of me, knocking me out of my shock. "Did you overload the jutsu?" He said while looking down at me who was unharmed, I shook my head and pointed past him. Judas turned around and his mouth dropped in shock "how much power did you put into that thing!" he said while looking towards me, I wasn't sure how to respond so I said how much I used, which was a tenth and his mouth dropped. "That's amazing from a kid! Great work!" he said while patting me on the back. "If you can pick up a jutsu this quickly then you will be fine in the field but for now work on your control of the technique. A little tip as well, each hand sign plays a part in the making of a jutsu, they help mould your chakra in a certain way but if you can do that without the help then that saves time right?" He said while still looking down at me, before smiling and flickering away.
With my advanced eyes I could tell how my chakra was formed inside of my body and it made sense, if I took out some of the hand signs and did the moulding without them, it may help with shortening the prep time of the jutsu. I retried the jutsu before a quest appeared.
"Quest alert! 'Mind affects body'"
"Learn how to manipulate chakra inside of your own body to a high degree of skill!
Objective 1: Learn how to remove hand seals in a jutsu
Objective 2: Completely remove hand seals for a jutsu
Hidden objective 1: ?
Hidden objective 2: ?
Rewards: Scroll for C – rank lightning jutsu "Lightning style: Current", hint towards world tree unlock condition, 5000 ryo
Hidden objective rewards: Scroll for a random B – rank jutsu, 500 reputation for Judas Orisuke, Hidden objective reveal voucher
Failure rewards: nothing"
I immediately got started on the quest and slowly went through the hand signs, the boar seal brought the chakra from my pool into my arms, next was the bird seal it made my chakra into its lightning form, second to last was the dragon seal that forced my chakra into the palm of my hand and the dog seal at the end moulded it into the shape of a spear. I then realised something was wrong, but I would worry about that later.
I only had about 10 minutes before class ended so I went back to the classroom and put back my scroll, Judas was still outside checking on other students around the academy grounds, but quickly flickered in once he was done.
"Oh Shin, didn't realise you came back. Do you need some help with your jutsu? I'm sure the control is hard if you have that much chakra." He said with a helpful tone that wasn't condescending before I put up my hand, "no there is nothing wrong with my control for the moment but cutting down on the amount of hand seals is my goal right now." I said while looking at him.
"That's some pretty time-consuming stuff. If you need any help, just come to the staff room right after the final bell rings and I can give you some tips, by the way, your eyes earlier were in quite a peculiar pattern earlier. Are you by chance part of the chinoike clan?"
"I do not consider myself part of the clan as I do not use any techniques from the clan's repertoire, but I was born as one." I said in a calm tone.
"Nice, if you do need help in anything besides jutsu I am here though. From what I have heard the mental problems they are associated with are hereditary." At this comment my ears twitched and I looked towards him.
"Hereditary? What sort of problems?" I quickly said forgoing my cool act to get answers.
"Yeah, it's the reason they were removed from lightning country to begin with and sealed by the Uchiha, they would go on rampages due to the hallucinations that plagued them. They worked fine as mercenaries though." He said simply while I sat back down.
"Yeah, I have been seeing some stuff lately, but I shrugged it off. Is there any fix for it?" I said while biting my nail, this was getting shitty quickly.
"I haven't heard of any fix but once again I am here to help if you need it, the others should be coming back in now so just relax before you go to your next class if you have one." Judas noted before cleaning up the rest of the scrolls that were left behind by the students.
Soon they started to funnel in, all talking and laughing about the jutsu they were going to learn over the next week. I was still thinking about what Judas said about hereditary hallucinations it sounded like schizophrenia or something and I was not okay with that.
Judas talked about how great everyone's progress was as the bell rang and we funnelled out, Yugito walked over to me, leaving her two friends to go ahead. "Yo Shin, how did yours go? I have survival class after this then I am done how about you?"
"I picked up a good lightning jutsu and I have to go towards my genjutsu class next. I'll see you at the gate later alright?" I said while getting up and walking to the door.
"Yeah, sure see you there." Yugito said while walking the other direction in the hall. I don't know why but it felt like she was sad for some reason, 'maybe it's because she isn't in the same classes as me? No, Yugito is different than that, I'll have to ask her later' I thought while walking towards my final class of the day, Genjutsu.
There was one other girl in the room when I arrived and the teacher, a man with dark lavender hair that was tied in a man bun. He wore a dark blue undershirt with a lavender tailcoat and black pants, he wore dark black work boots and had light grey eyes. "From my roster you must be Shin, correct?" he asked quizzically before turning back to the girl in the room, "this is Natsumi Yagi." He said while gesturing his clipboard to the girl that was sitting attentively in front of him. She had black hair and green eyes; she was wearing a black shirt with navy blue pants that were tied around the ankles. Her shoes were the average shinobi sandals, dark grey in colour.
"Sup" Was all she said, and I took the seat next to her.
"Sup" I replied while the teacher put his clipboard down.
"My name is Kirei, and I was known as the ghost of kumo during the second war due to my skill in the genjutsu arts. For starters are there any special abilities I should be aware of before we begin?" Kirei boasted while looking between us both, I was hesitant at first, but his gaze made me crumble as I put up my hand.
"Wow I really wasn't expecting anything, please do share your ability." He said with an authoritative tone, as I closed and reopened my eyes with the ketsuryugan activated, but this time was different. My chakra felt hot, but not uncomfortably, it was fast, but easily manageable and the pattern in my eyes had changed, before when I activated them, they were bright red with the pupil being black with a red dash going through the centre, now that red dash had a small dot on top of the middle.
Kirei's eyes widened at my dojutsu, and he smirked before saying "I'm surprised to see those eyes here, but useful, nonetheless. Your chakra control should be fine, but I will have you both tested for it now." He picked up 2 wooden boards that had extremely intricate designs etched in. "Pour your chakra into these and try to get it into the centre, use too much and it will smoke, use too little and it won't move, make sure you control it well or you will get stuck on the sides."
We both grabbed the boards and started filling them up with chakra, I focused on the veins etched into the wood and manipulated my chakra to follow them towards the middle, there were several turns that I found it easy to pass through, but a swirl gave me a bit more challenge. I looked over to Natsumi who was having an easier time than me, easily weaving through the patterns before her cord of chakra stopped moving. Mine continued until there was a jagged spiral which I couldn't navigate well enough and got stuck near the end of the first ring.
"Great job for beginners! You both should have a fine time with the illusion arts." He chirped at our progress before snatching the boards up and writing on the board behind him. "Genjutsu falls outside of the 5 main elemental arts and uses a different kind of chakra instead. Do either of you know what that is?" I raised my hand and answered simply "Yin chakra."
"Good. Genjutsu are very delicate and require precise chakra control to activate but when they work correctly give a huge advantage to combat scenarios and force the victim to become a huge target for any sensor on your squad or inflict injuries to themselves to dispel. I used to use small and subtle techniques of low chakra usage such as the mirage genjutsu to create a chance for my allies to capitalise on the distraction."
"This is not to say genjutsu is only useful as a distraction or in groups. They work fine alone and some of the strongest can put the victim into a coma from a single glance, like those pesky Uchiha from Konoha."
"Some of my greatest feats were achieved working solo on missions like when I used a wide scale mirage genjutsu to mask the presence of a small squad to destroy an Iwa encampment. I achieved this by putting a genjutsu on the road they were walking on and the surroundings to appear as if there were nothing there."
He finally finished his lecture by chucking us a scroll each. "Use the techniques in these scrolls to improve your chakra control, it is fine already but you will have an easier time using genjutsu if it's at your maximum."
I had finally gotten my hands on the wall and water walking techniques so I could increase my control, if only I had shadow clones to make it easier. I would make do with what I had and stashed the scroll away after reading it. The theory was simple, and I had just forgotten to get the skill which was stupid in hindsight.
He told us to go practice that, before pulling out an orange book I hadn't seen in a little while. I sweat dropped before walking out of the room with Natsumi on my tail.
"Is there something you need Natsumi-san?" I asked, wanting to know why she was following me.
"Well, we're in the same class so we should practice together, right?" She responded while falling into step with me.
"Makes sense, alright" I said, finishing the conversation quickly as not to waste time.
When we got outside, I went to the tree, and she went to the wall.
"You probably should do it on a tree first, you don't want…" I would have finished but she started trying to walk up before flying backwards and slamming her head into the ground. Her eyes turned into spirals as she stood up, shaking her head.
I started channelling a sliver of chakra into my feet while laying horizontal against the tree with my feet on the trunk. I took one step, and my leg didn't stick so it simply landed next to my other one. I did this tedious progress over again until I got a message.
"Skill unlocked 'surface walking' level 1"
"Allows the user to create a layer of chakra that sticks to any surface
Costs 1 CP per seconds"
'Perfect' I thought while starting to walk up the tree, much to Natsuki's shock. "H-H-How the hell did you do it!" She yelled while pointing a finger at me and a mock angry expression on her face. 'Cute' I thought before slapping myself for thinking a young girl was cute like that. "Its simple Natsumi-san just put a small amount of chakra on your feet and walk up the wall, if you use to much you slip, if you use too little you blast off like you have been.
"So, I need to use less? Easy!" She said while puffing out her chest and running up the wall before slipping and slamming her face before she even reached it. "Bahaha! How are you supposed to climb up if you can't even get there!" I yelled down from the top branch I was on.
"Sh-sh-shut up! I got it this time just you watch Shin!" She yelled while pouting. 'Cute' I thought before punching myself in the gut mentally. I watched her fail a few more times, laughing at each one before hopping down and helping her. With my new eyes I could slightly see chakra, but it was very blurry, not the networks of other people, just when chakra is used outside the body it shines a light blue colour.
I walked up the wall in front of her and burned the amount into my memory before turning down to her on the ground. "I'll guide you, use how much chakra you were using before, and I'll tell you less or more. Put one foot on the wall so I can see." She did as ask, and I guided her until I stopped. "You should be fine now, just hold that amount and walk up towards me" I said while holding out my hand with a smile. She grinned back and started walking up before slapping my hand in a high five. "Heh, see that wasn't hard." She said with a small smile.
"Sure, it wasn't I'll make sure to remember those 30 times you failed though for future reference."
"You wouldn't."
I simply grinned back before slapping her shoulder. "You're it!" I said while running along the wall.
Probably not the best idea to play tag while 10 meters up above the ground but we are shinobi, so it doesn't matter. She started chasing after me quickly "Oh you bastard! Get back here!" She yelled while laughing.
She was about to catch up to me, but I planted my hand on the wall, using it as an anchor to swing to my right at a sharp angle. Natsuki kept running, and running, until she flew off the side of the building at no less than 10km/h.
"OH SHIT!" I yelled while jumping from the wall I was on using chakra to fling off. "WAHOOOO" was all she yelled as I tried to reach her flipping body, we were just over 15 m from the ground as I grabbed her with my momentum sticking my feet to a tree, making my body vibrate all over.
"You dumbass! Why were you running that fast! And why didn't you stop flipping!" I said while she tapped her fingers together and blushing.
"I-It was funny?" She said in the most uncertain voice I had ever heard while I deadpanned down at her in my arms. Then I dropped her off of the trunk and she hit the ground on her ass.
"This is going to be a long school year isn't it?" I said to myself outwardly while Natsuki was rubbing her rear.
"Hehe, maybe?" She replied while trying to touch my hand which I deftly dodged, and she cursed. "Won't get me that easily Natsuki!" I yelled while running back towards the school over the academy grounds.
RAHHHHHHH! FINALLY DONE! CHAPTER SO STUBBORN! It took me another 6 hours to finish but its finally here. I took a break on Thursday, so I didn't do anything then but today you get a chapter! Hope you like the antics and shit between Shin and Natsuki. I will probably write more if you do and I'll answer any questions you have through pm so send a review with a question and I will respond. I don't have schizophrenia so I don't know how severe the hallucinations are and I'm sorry for getting your hopes up if you thought you were getting a raid arc.
