Vlad King's Green Bean
Chapter three: It's a party at the USJ
It had been a week since he started attending UA, and yet Izuku still felt as excited as he did when he went in for his first day. With a spring in his step, the green haired boy left the apartment where he and his mom Inko lived, and proceeded to make his way on over to UA, to start another week of education at the top hero academy in the nation.
There was more to Izuku's eagerness to get to UA. Aside from how it's the top hero academy in Japan and the very school that All Might graduated from and now taught at, it was also the first school that Izuku had gone to where he was treated nice by others. He not only had real friends (in the form of Juzo, Yosetsu, and Nirengeki), but the teachers also respected him and were kind to him. Prior to UA, Izuku didn't know that due to his prior quirklessness.
Izuku was even given a surprise by All Might himself at the end of his first full week as a UA student; to help address the issues Izuku has been having with controlling One For All, All Might (who looked a bit scared to Izuku's worry) had gotten a hold of his (All Might's) old teacher, a man that the Symbol of Peace identified to the green haired boy as one Gran Torino. Izuku's training under Gran Torino in the form of special private after school lessons will begin at the end of the current school week.
Izuku remembered All Might saying that the training under Gran Torino will give him extra experience in time for the upcoming UA Sports Festival, which All Might told Izuku was still a few weeks to at least a month off. Izuku was instantly excited; he remembered always watching the UA Sports Festival on TV growing up, and now he had a chance to actually compete in it. Izuku was hoping to get as much out of his time under Gran Torino as possible now.
As Izuku got to his stop, he noticed that there was another boy in a UA uniform there; one with a black bird head with a yellow beak, and a red collar like mark around his neck. "Oh, you're a UA student as well!" Izuku greeted the bird headed boy, getting his attention. To Izuku's surprise, a creature of shadows came out of the bird headed boy through the belly button it seemed like, and remained attached as if it were on an umbilical cord.
The shadow creature's head looked roughly like the bird headed boy's head, and it had simple arms of shadow that three points each serving as hand digits. The shadow creature looked at Izuku from head to toe to head again, then turned to look at the bird headed boy. "He don't look like one of your classmates, Fumi," the shadow creature casually commented.
"He must belong to another homeroom class, Dark Shadow," the bird headed boy, identified as Fumi, said to his shadow creature who he called Dark Shadow. Turning to Izuku, Fumi said, "I apologize for Dark Shadow if he came off as rude to you. Anyway, given that we're both wearing the UA uniform, I suppose we ought to introduce ourselves to one another." Fumi offered a handshake to Izuku as he said, "My name is Fumikage Tokoyami. And the creature that you see here bound to me is known as Dark Shadow."
Izuku smiled, accepted the handshake from the now properly identified Tokoyami. "Izuku Midoriya." The green haired boy even offered a handshake to Dark Shadow who, surprised and also a little bit flattered, accepted. Turning to Tokoyami, Izuku asked, "I assume that Dark Shadow here is part of your quirk? If you don't mind me asking that is."
"It's no problem, I assure you," Tokoyami replied, "And he isn't so much a slice rather than the whole pie, or at least most of it as I doubt my head's appearance is a result of Dark Shadow manifesting."
Izuku nodded in understanding, hoping to get the chance to study and analyze Dark Shadow at some point; he had never seen a quirk like Dark Shadow, and the prospect of studying it made the green haired boy excited. Looking curious, Izuku said, "Say, I've taken this stop to UA every day since the current school year started, and yet this is the first time I'm meeting you."
"Oh," Tokoyami said, blushing in embarrassment, "It's because there's a shop near this stop that sells a specific kind of snack that I wanted to grab some of before heading to UA. It's not my cup of tea per say, but there's... umm..."
"A girl who Fumi has the hots for loves that snack," Dark Shadow provided, eliciting an embarrassed look out of Tokoyami.
Izuku looked mildly surprised, but understood. "Seems fair," Izuku replied, "I mean, I met a girl during the UA entrance exams who I think is pretty cute, but I have no idea if she made it in or not. I mean at first I thought she did and she was in my homeroom class with me, but it was a different girl who looked somewhat similar." Izuku was still embarrassed over mistaking Kinoko Komori for the girl who helped save him from a nasty fall during the practical portion of the entrance exams.
Gesturing to Tokoyami, Dark Shadow said, "Well Fumi here was able to score some points with the Asui girl. What with Fumi forcing that short pervert away and telling the blonde hysteric holler monkey to chill a cycle whenever he acts up, Asui had come to see Fumi in a good light. Why, on Friday of last week, Asui even brought Fumi and I over to meet her folks. Her parents are chill, and while the little sister is kind of a mild brat, she's still a nice kid. Asui's little brother is pure absolute sweetheart though, even addressing me as Shadow Friend."
Tokoyami gave a single nod of agreement. "It is rare for children that age to not be afraid of you at first sight, Dark Shadow."
Looking to Tokoyami, Dark Shadow said, "You chose what girl to crush on very well, Fumi."
The green haired boy nodded once in understanding. "Well I hope that Tokoyami succeeds in securing this Asui girl's affections." Within a few brief moments, the train came for both Izuku and Tokoyami to take to get to UA. The two boys got on board and took off for the beginning of their second week at Japan's top hero academy. Neither of them thought to tell the other what class they respectively belonged to, thus they never learned that they were practically next door neighbors.
...They will learn soon enough, however.
Later that morning at UA, Sekijiro was starting up homeroom for Class 1-B. "Well aside from the incident last week where the news media swarmed onto campus," Sekijiro began, "I feel that our first week had gone off without any real hitches." Clapping his hands together, the Blood Hero went on, "That being said, here's to this week going off without any hitches period!"
All of Sekijiro's students cheered in agreement with their homeroom teacher. After they all had settled down, Sekijiro said, "Anyway class, although this wasn't something that I was expecting, we have a special guest lecturer coming in to speak with you all today. He had left early and made a straight beeline right for UA to ensure that he'd get here on time since he wanted to speak with all of you to see how you're doing so far at UA."
The students began to murmur amongst themselves in excited curiosity. "A special guest lecturer, Kan-sensei?" Itsuka asked, "Who would wa-"
"I AM HERE!" Itsuka was cut off by a boisterous baritone voice booming out from the doorway, making everyone turn to see All Might, dressed in a white long sleeved dress shirt with a red tie, yellow dress pants, and shiny black dress shoes. The students in 1-B, Izuku especially, began to all freak out over the Symbol of Peace himself coming to see them, especially since according to Kan-sensei, All Might had gone out of his way to make it happen.
Sekijiro couldn't help but smirk a bit in amusement; he and Toshinori, All Might's true identity, had discussed it a head of time given that Izuku still needed help to catch up with his quirk. But they didn't want to make it obvious that it was more or less for Izuku, so this first bit would be in the form of a lecture that All Might would give to all of Class 1-B, to see where and how they all were doing thus far as UA first years.
...
Within due time, the talk started. "So tell me, Sekijiro's students," All Might began, "How are you all doing in UA thus far?"
Holding up a hand, Nirengeki said, "That I have to agree with what Kan-sensei said earlier about how last week went off without a hitch aside from the surprise news media swarm. I also agree with him when he said that he hopes this week goes off without a hitch period."
"That is the dream, Young Shoda," All Might remarked, "But we must be prepared for everything. Now, did you all do elections for class rep and vice rep yet?"
"Midoriya was elected class rep and I was made vice rep," Itsuka said as she held a hand up.
"I see!" All Might said, "That must be a sign that you and Young Midoriya are trusted by your peers, Young Kendo! You and Young Midoriya both owe it to your classmates to-"
*SLAM*
"I'M LOOKING FOR ALL MIGHT!"
All Might was cut off when a male voice shouted out in clear distress and panic, making All Might, Sekijiro, and all of Class 1-B turn to look at the doorway leading into the room. To Izuku's surprise, it was the stern, serious glasses wearing boy from the entrance exams who told had him off for his mumbling. The boy, clearly winded as if he had made a long and mad dash, was wearing a hero costume that resembled that of the pro hero Ingenium, although there was no helmet at the time, hence why Izuku was able to identify him.
Right away, All Might and Sekijiro turned to look at the boy, clearly on alert given the boy's state as well as how he got their attention. "You're Tenya Iida from Class 1-A, under Aizawa," All Might said, "Tell me, what's wrong, Young Iida?"
"The USJ is under attack by villains!" the boy, now identified as Tenya Iida, cried out in alarm, thus alarming everyone in the classroom. "My classmates Sato and Shoji were able to pull the security doors open for me to escape and go for help! I ran straight back here in the hopes of finding you, and convincing you and as many UA teachers to go and-"
"There's no need to worry, Young Iida," All Might said. To Izuku's worry, All Might was now frowning, something that he had never seen All Might do before. "You stay here and rest," All Might said, "Sekijiro and I will bring as many of UA's staff with us and go rescue everyone over at the USJ!"
"We'll tell Aizawa if he asks that we told you to stay here," Sekijiro assured Iida, "You've done more than enough." To his own students, Sekijiro said, "Kids, you all stay here!" The Blood Hero barked that as an order, his tone brokering no quarter. Understandably, no one in the class were going to argue with their teacher, especially right now when there was currently a crisis that made the news media swarm last week look like child's play going on right now.
Without another word, Sekijiro ran out with All Might, listing off all the people from UA that they ought to grab before rushing to the USJ.
...
A few minutes after Sekijiro and All Might left, the Class 1-B students were able to get Iida to catch his breath, with Juzo even offering a can of watermelon flavored soda which Iida gratefully accepted. After drinking a mouthful of the soda, Iida stopped short when his eyes landed right on Izuku, who was looking right at him. "...So, you made it into UA," Iida said.
Izuku, who was still a bit wary of Iida due to how stern he was back at the entrance exams, nodded once. "I did, yes."
Iida let out a tired sigh. "...Good. I'm glad for that." Izuku was surprised by Iida expressing gladness over him (Izuku) making it into UA. The green haired boy was further surprised by Iida when he went on to say, "Because I've been meaning to apologize to you for my rudeness towards you back when we first met during the entrance exams."
"You're..." Izuku said, sounding surprised in an appreciative way, "...Apologizing to me?"
"You had proven yourself to be far more hero than what I had expected out of you," Iida said, "You had picked up on things that even I had failed to see. As I'm trying to say, I'm sorry for how I had acted towards you. I'd also like to thank you for opening my eyes, for expanding my perception of what it takes to be, what it means to be, a hero."
Izuku wasn't sure of what to say, especially since this was the first time someone was willingly and deliberately apologizing to him for how they had been rude to him previously. Izuku didn't need to speak up, however, because his friends in 1-B did that for him. "Oh yeah, Midoriya here is a real solid dude," Yosetsu said, "You couldn't ask for a better bud to have in your corner."
Iida, though still tired due to how he had ran all the way to UA from the USJ, gave an agreeing smile. "That's something I'm going to have to agree with." Turning to look back at Izuku, Iida said, "So your name is Midoriya, huh?" The tired boy arched a wry eyebrow. "...You wouldn't happen to be Izuku Midoriya, would you?"
Izuku looked surprised. "You got my full name?"
"One of my fellow classmates in Class 1-A," Iida began to explain, "Fumikage Tokoyami, said that he met an Izuku Midoriya wearing the UA uniform at a stop he took to get to UA this morning because he stopped off at a shop a bit out of the way first to buy a treat for our classmate Asui."
"Oh!" Izuku said, "You're in the same class as Tokoyami!" Nodding once, Izuku went on, "Yes, I am that same Izuku Midoriya."
Iida nodded once. "Tenya Iida. Tokoyami was about to go on with more of the story he had on you, but Aizawa-sensei came in followed by some of our classmates, cutting Tokoyami off and having all of us sit down to go over our trip to the USJ today."
"Which was attacked by villains," Itsuka said.
Iida nodded in confirmation. "...They appeared through a large dark swirling portal conjured by that mist looking man. The leader was a fellow covered in fake hands, and there was also this monster that the villain leader was boasting could easily kill even All Might." That alarmed the Class 1-B students. "My classmates Shoji and Sato," Iida went on, "Using their strength, were able to pry open the security doors and let me run out to get help." Iida gently shook his head. "...I have no idea how my classmates and Aizawa-sensei, as well as our guest lecturer, the pro hero Thirteen, are doing right now. They could be-"
"Kan-sensei and All Might are leading as many UA teachers over to the USJ as we speak," Itsuka spoke up, getting Iida to look up at her, "Have faith in them, Iida. I'm sure they'll save everyone."
The tired boy offered a similarly tired smile. "I hope so." Suddenly, Iida was surprised when a hand reached out to him. Looking over to see the source, Iida was surprised to see that it was Izuku who was reaching a hand out to him.
"...Thanks for apologizing to me," Izuku said, offering a small but warm smile, "I accept. And if you don't mind, I'd like to count you as a friend. You'd be my first outside of Class 1-B."
Iida looked on for a moment before returning the smile and accepting the handshake. "It'd be my pleasure, Midoriya. And you'll be my first friend outside of Class 1-A."
Itsuka herself couldn't help but smile. "Now this is what I'd like to see, friendship between classes. I've got no problem with healthy competition between classes, but there have been cases out there where classes form bitter rivalries more often than not. I'd like to avoid that between our class and ours, Iida."
"I'll spread the word to my classmates," Iida said. Rising from his seat, Iida went on with increasing confidence, "All nineteen of them. And I'm also very much certain that Aizawa-sensei will approve of our classes working together every so often."
Pumping both of his fists into the air, Yosetsu cheered, "Woot! Things are starting to look better already!"
Togaru nodded in agreement. "Heh, yeah. I get the feeling that everything is going to be alright."
A motorcycle sped towards the front area of the USJ, coming to a sudden stop outside, where a few ambulances, a fire truck, at least six police cruisers, and almost a dozen prisoner transport trucks were all parked outside. The person got off of their motorcycle, took their helmet off to reveal that he was Hizashi Yamada, pro hero Present Mic and UA teacher.
Looking around, Hizashi spotted his co-workers at UA all around, but focused on where Detective Naomasa, All Might's friend in the police force, was talking to a shell shocked looking Aizawa and a crying Nemuri. Alarm bells instantly went off in Hizashi's mind as he made his way over, and those alarm bells only got louder when, as he made his way over to Aizawa and Nemuri, he took note of how the students of Aizawa's that he saw were either shell shocked or crying.
Within quick order, Hizashi reached Aizawa and Nemuri. "I got held up in traffic, sorry," Hizashi said, "But I got it over my hands free phone that Sekijiro and All Might called for as many UA staff who are pro heroes to rush over to the USJ pronto." When Aizawa and Nemuri finally looked to him, the loud pro hero asked a certain question. Only two words long, but they were two words that Hizashi found himself dreading the answer to.
"...What happened?"
Aizawa, able to get a hold of himself well enough, gestured over to the USJ building. "...I took my students here to the USJ as planned," began the underground hero, "The lot of us met Thirteen here so that she could go over how to deal with working in various disaster zones." Aizawa gently shook his head. "...But the USJ became an entirely different disaster zone when villains had showed up through a portal that appeared out of nowhere."
"How did the villains even know of the USJ's location?" Hizashi asked, "That's info which we closely guard!"
Gently shaking his head, Aizawa replied, "I don't know how they learned that." Gesturing to the prisoner transport trucks, Aizawa went on, "Aside from the mist villain who conjured the portal who escaped in the end, every villain is accounted for. All of the fodder villains have been subdued and arrested, and the big beast was captured easily enough as it apparently won't even so much as twitch without orders from the villain who led the attack."
Gesturing to Aizawa, Hizashi asked, "And the villain leader himself?"
Aizawa let out a troubled sigh. "...My student Monoma actually killed the villain leader." Hearing that one of Aizawa's students actually killed a villain surprised Hizashi. "...Yeah, the villain leader had a quirk that allowed him to turn anything he touched with all five digits on one hand into dust. Monoma saw him use it on a rock he picked up to demonstrate his quirk in a bid to frighten the rest of my students. Monoma, using his Copy quirk, was able to get in, copy the villain leader's quirk, and used it on the villain, dusting the whole of him."
"Where's Monoma now?" Hizashi asked. Right away, Nemuri cried a bit more, alarming Hizashi as Nemuri crying at that moment told him that the news was far from being good.
Aizawa let out a breath. "...The villain leader was able to hit Monoma with his quirk, dusting him in return. Monoma died saving the rest of the class from potentially meeting a similar fate."
Hizashi, although he was expecting it due to all of the hints he had picked up, let out a breath. "Hoo boy, things here have certainly gone to shit now. What could be worse news for UA than one student having died?"
Aizawa gestured over to where the ambulances were parked. To Hizashi's horror and heartbreak, he saw five bodies covered by white sheets as a few Class 1-A students stood nearby. "How about five students, as well as Thirteen herself?" Aizawa remarked dryly.
"Oh shit," Hizashi huffed out, "Shit, shit, shit, shit, shit." The loud pro hero looked to his co-workers and friends. "...Who aside from Monoma and Thirteen did we lose?"
"Mineta," Aizawa said, "Sato, Koda, and Asui." Each name he spoke felt to Aizawa like a dagger piercing his heart. A total of five of his students, as well as his fellow pro hero and UA teacher Thirteen, were all killed in the villain's attack on the USJ today. To make things worse, that mist villain who conjured the portal that brought all of the other villains in got away, and there's none of Monoma's remains left to bury or cremate. At least the villain leader is dead, and the fodder force and the monster were all apprehended.
But will that be enough for the families who have to be informed that they had lost loved ones? Will it be enough for Monoma's parents who have to be shown security footage from the USJ attack to have proof that they had lost their son and only child? Will it be enough for Thirteen's surviving family, her parents and younger brother who has his own family, who have to be told that Thirteen died without ever marrying or starting her own family?
And what about the families of the other four students who died? What about the Minetas? The Satos? The Kodas? The Asuis? How will Aizawa explain it to those four that three of them each lost a son while the fourth lost a daughter? The underground hero, for the first time since he and Hizashi lost their friend Oboro back in their UA student days, felt utterly hopeless. He prayed that this was some manner of mistake, that this all was a nightmare.
As Aizawa, Hizashi, and Nemuri spoke with Naomasa, Sekijiro and Ryo came walking up. "Shouta," Ryo spoke up, "We're going to need the help of the police to notify next of kin, like, now. All of your students were friendly enough with one another to swap numbers, up to and including the numbers of their households. They're going to tell the families of their slain classmates what happened, even if we tell them not to."
Sekijiro nodded grimly in agreement. "Your students feel that they owe it to one another. They care that much."
"...Fair enough," Aizawa agreed, "We'll need to return the belongings of the slain students left at UA to their families anyway. We could have my surviving students help with that, provided that the police have no issue."
"On the contrary," Naomasa replied, "As grim as it is, your students, since they're aiming to become pro heroes, ought to be trained in the art of helping to notify next of kin."
The underground hero let out a tired sigh. "Very well." Turning to look at Ryo, Aizawa asked, "Do you have any recommendations on which student ought to help notify what family?"
The Hunting Dog Hero nodded grimly in the affirmative. "I think that Kaminari would be best to notify Mineta's family, Kaminari was the closest to Mineta from what I saw. Ashido, Yaoyorozu, and Kirishima seem very friendly and approachable for the rest of your students, I'm sure they can help to notify Koda's family, Monoma's family, and Sato's family respectively." Ryo let out a sigh of his own. "As for notifying Asui's family, have Tokoyami do it. The two were close, and I got it that Tokoyami is actually already familiar with Asui's family. A familiar face can deliver bad news more easily."
Aizawa nodded grimly in understanding. "...Fair enough. Can you do me a favor and inform those students who you recommended about the grim job they have now?"
Ryo nodded in agreement before heading off, leaving Sekijiro with the others. "...I am sorry, Shouta," said the Blood Hero, "I am so sorry. What happened here today is something that never should have taken place at all."
"We're going to have to have a meeting about this," Nemuri said flatly, having calmed down enough from her crying to get back on page, "A staff member and five students were killed today. There's no way this won't make the news. We're going to have to work to do damage control. We're also going to have to discuss the very likely possibility of canceling the UA Sports Festival this year."
"Woah, woah, woah," Hizashi said, "Cancel the UA Sports Festival? Can we really-"
"A staff member and five students were killed, Hizashi," Aizawa pointed out, "In a villain attack on a location that's supposed to be secret and secure, and one of the villains from the attack escaped. Yeah, this is a major security breech. Canceling the UA Sports Festival this year will probably be one of the first things suggested at the damage control meeting that we're bound to have to address what all happened here today."
Sekijiro threw his head back and let out a sigh. The news media swarm into UA grounds last week was hardly a love tap compared to the hurricane level shitstorm that occured here at the USJ today. Things had just gotten infinitely more dicey now that there's a body count. The Blood Hero could only hope that his own students won't be forced to face such trouble. Looking around, Sekijiro was able to see the looks on the faces of Aizawa's surviving students. Despondent, shell shocked looks on some of the boys, and broken, sad, crying looks on the girls.
Sekijiro never wanted his own students to look like that.
END, CHAPTER THREE
Due to Izuku's presence in class 1-A during the canon USJ attack, everyone lived. Mind you, there were some heavy injuries, but everyone survived. Here though, five students and the pro hero Thirteen were killed, although for the villains only Kurogiri was able to get away as Shigaraki was dusted in a mutual kill with Monoma. This is the first major effect that Izuku not being placed into and kept in Class 1-A will have, but it will be far from the last.
