Another Call

Prompt: Longing/Timing

Naminé sighed as she leaned back in her chair, eyes staring at the silent gummiphone. It was an invention that many of those who worked across worlds loved. As did their loved ones, as Naminé could attest. With the touch of a few buttons, you could hear and sometimes see your friends from stars away. It was a fact that both Naminé and Roxas appreciated as Roxas went out for missions.

Without a keyblade of her own, she often had to stay back in Twilight Town while Roxas traveled to handle any heartless popping up. More often than not, he was willing to answer as soon as his phone started ringing. Which made moments like this so difficult. When her call wasn't picked up. Usually it was nothing, just a bad moment, or a fight that went on too long.

But she always was afraid of the idea that it might not be nothing.

Naminé rubbed her face, trying to banish the fears of a journey gone wrong. She had left a message for Roxas earlier in the day, and tried to go on as usual. Hoping to lose herself in her drawings as she waited to hear from him again. But today was different. A chill in the air that felt like something terrible was coming. Unable to rest, she snatched up her phone and pressed his name in the contact list one last time. "Please pick up," she murmured as the phone began to ring.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

"Hey Naminé! Sorry I couldn't answer!"

"Roxas!" She sighed in relief as she heard his voice and he appeared on the video window. He was okay. A bit scuffed up, but nothing a good bath wouldn't fix..

Roxas wiped some of the sweat from his brow as he gestured to the forest behind him, "I was in the middle of dealing with some heartless. A little surprising, but nothing I couldn't handle."

She relaxed in her chair as she held the phone up with both hands."Thank goodness, I was a little worried when you hadn't called back."

Likewise, he seemed to be holding his phone with care as he sat on a nearby stump, "Sorry I couldn't give a heads up. It was a bit of an ambush that got out of control."

Naminé furrowed her brow at the news. Every other keyblade wielder had been reporting more heartless attacking with coordination. "You think it could be part of something bigger?"

Roxas shook his head with a grimace as he admitted, "Probably, but I don't know for sure." But as he gave the less than positive news, he relaxed with a smile. "But I'm glad you called, seeing you really helps."

Lying back, Naminé gently stroked the screen with her thumb as she murmured, "I just wish I could do more."

"Hearing from you is plenty." Roxas answered with a grin, though that began to falter as he began to scratch his cheek. "But.."

Naminé tilted her head, curious about what Roxas was getting at, "But what?"

"It's," He scratched the back of his head as he stuttered out, "something dumb." Even so, Naminé raised an eyebrow, silently encouraging him to continue. Soon enough, he relented and muttered, "I want to kiss you through my phone."

Naminé stifled a giggle at the idea. While it was certainly a bit simple and impractical with the device, she would be lying if she said she wasn't looking forward to having him in her arms again. She leaned closer, and admitted, "I don't think it's that dumb. I've got half a mind to try it myself."

For a moment, the two looked into each other's eyes through their camera. They could see the wish to simply press a hand to the screen and pass through the universe to join their loved one. Closer and closer, the two leaned together. Naminé's eyelids drifted down as the two of them were lost in this moment. A mutual wish for the distance between them to go from millions of lightyears to zero.

And even if the phone was hardly the same as their lover's lips, it felt close enough for both of them.

He pulled away, a faint blush on his cheeks. "I'm on my way home, Naminé."

She smiled, looking forward to having him in her arms again. "See you soon, Roxas."
