Castle Ficathon 2022 Story

Chapter 29 - Sunday at the Castles

Events and happenings in the lives of the Castle family during May 2024…

Late evening, May 3rd…

Following a family grocery shopping spree, Rick and Kate had finally got the kids in bed and settled down after a day of involvement with their Dad's planning for his annual May the 4th Star Wars celebration. The kids were enthralled in their Dad's Star Wars world as they walked through the aisles, searching for the ingredients for Rick's meal and snack ideas.

Emma and Eli are delighted that they will be able to dress up as their favorite Star Wars characters, Eli as a Stormtrooper, and Emma, as Yoda. Kate refused to style her hair like Princess Leia but agreed to wear the costume Rick had surprised her with earlier in the week, even if it was a bit sexier than what she recalled from the movie. Rick had vacillated which character he wanted to portray, but no surprise to Kate, he landed on Darth Vader. Even knowing it would be challenging to move around in the kitchen when wearing his headgear.

After Rick's final review of his recipes and ensuring all of his cooking supplies were readily available, he and Kate shared a relaxing shower before cuddling in bed, hoping for a good night's sleep. As usual, Rick was spooning his wife with his hand resting on her stomach, but he soon noticed Kate's restlessness.

Finally, Rick asked, "Kate, what's up? I can tell something is on your mind."

Kate sighed and finally turned, facing her husband, and inquired, "Babe, are you noticing that Emma and Eli's back and forth about the sex of PJ is becoming more spirited and not always in the most friendly sense?" Before Rick could answer, Kate continued, "Twice today, I felt like I was going to have to separate them before they got into a full-fledged argument. At first, their back and forth was cute, but now, it seems they have their minds set on the sex of the baby, and I'm not sure how they will react after my June scan when we learn if our baby is a boy or girl."

Rick was quiet for several moments before suggesting, "Kate, they are both great kids. Don't you think they will accept the news once we know if we are having a boy or girl?"

"I want to hope they will, but I'm not so sure after today. I don't want to end up having one of the kids hurt, and they pull away, and we have to spend the remaining months of my pregnancy trying to get one of them on board with the birth of their sibling," Kate sadly answered.

"Kate, do you think that could happen?" asked Rick.

"I just don't know Rick, but I'm not sure I want to risk the chance," stated Kate.

"Sweetheart, what are you saying? Do you think we shouldn't ask to know the sex of the baby at your June appointment?" asked a shocked Rick.

Kate looked at Rick, saying, "I'm not ready to make that decision now, but I do feel it's something we need to consider."

Rick leaned back with his arm under his head as he stared at the ceiling, thinking through all that Kate had just shared with him. The two remained quiet for several minutes before Rick suggested, "Can we wait and watch the kids close over the next few weeks and see if their attitudes toward PJ improve?"

"Sure, Babe. I just wanted you to know what I saw today and have been thinking over the past week or two," answered Kate.

Rick again pulled Kate to his side, and finally, they fell asleep, with both of them working through their thoughts about the many decisions ahead for their family's future.

Rick wakes first and tries to slip out of bed without disturbing Kate, as he knows she continued to have a restless night after their late-night discussion. He makes a quick stop in the en-suite and takes care of his morning routine before changing into sweatpants and a t-shirt and heading out to the kitchen.

Rick's first task in his meal preparation is getting the large pork roast seasoned and into the crockpot. Next, he pulls out the ingredients for his famous seven-layer salad. He has made this dish so many times for his poker group that no recipe is needed.

As Kate exited the bedroom, Rick was completing the assembly of his salad, except for adding the cooked bacon and drizzling his homemade dressing over the top. Kate, dressed like Rick, entered the kitchen ready to assist her husband in preparing his prized May the 4th Brunch.

There was no further mention of their late-night discussion as the two worked in concert, reviewing menus and laughing at the identification labels Rick had printed and planned to place next to his creations.

Emma and Eli came into the kitchen, complaining that their parents' laughter had awakened them too early. Kate laughed as she greeted her kids with hugs and kisses, asking if they wanted to eat breakfast.

Rick surprised his kids with TIE (twin ion engine) fighter eggs and hashbrown Wookiees. Once the kids had stopped laughing, they sat down to eat and told their Daddy that their breakfast was delicious. Rick had also included blueberry muffins in R2-D2 holders, which he later admitted he had purchased from a local bakery.

After breakfast, Kate encouraged the kids to play games together in Eli's play area while she continued helping their Daddy prepare food for the Brunch.

Alexis had surprised the family by not coming home Friday evening but promised to be at the Loft early Saturday morning to help prepare for her Dad's big celebration. So when they heard a key in the Loft's door lock, Emma and Eli raced to welcome their big sister and Evan, who was standing beside her with a full-sized garment bag draped over his arm. After she greeted her siblings and parents, Alexis said, "We'll be right back. We're going to take our costumes up to my room."

Kate laid her hand on Rick's arm, shaking her head, encouraging him not to react. Rick turned to Kate with raised eyebrows, causing Kate to laugh as she quietly said, "They'll be back down shortly."

Rick started to say something, but Kate leaned in, giving him a rather passionate kiss, which took his mind off of anything he had planned to object to regarding Alexis and Evan. They came up for air just as Alexis and Evan walked into the kitchen, with Alexis laughing and saying, "Come on, guys. Can you at least try and control yourselves when we have company?"

Alexis's comment caused her parents to blush, with her Dad simply saying, "Sorry." As he turned, saying he needed to check his pulled pork. Kate patted Rick on his butt as he turned before addressing her oldest daughter, saying,

"We're so glad you guys are here. Are you ready to help us put the finishing touches on your Dad's Star Wars creations?"

Evan was going to join in and help with the meal until Eli yelled from across the room, "Evan, youz wantz to play wit Em and me?"

Evan wasn't sure what he should do until Alexis smiled and said, "If I were you, I wouldn't pass up on an opportunity to join those two. You have no idea how entertaining they can be when they get into playtime."

Evan glanced at Kate, who smiled and said, "Go for it. They don't invite just anyone to join in their playtime, especially when they are playing on Eli's mat. That's like sacred ground to him."

The adults watched as Evan went over to Eli's play mat, sat down, and immediately joined in on their game of Go Fish. It was only a few minutes before they heard all three voices calling out their card choices. Kate looked at her daughter, saying, "Well, that's a huge indicator of their approval of your guy."

Alexis smiled as she watched Evan and her siblings playing in the corner of their living room and warmheartedly replied, "Yes, it is."

Alexis then turned to her parents, asking how she could help. They arranged Rick's food labels between her and Kate, laughing at some of the ideas he had come up with, such as Luke Skywater and May the Pork Be With You.

Rick acted like he was offended by their laughter, but he soon slipped into host mode, showing them all the labels he had planned to use with the various dishes, admitting he had found several of them on a website.

Since the Star Wars party wouldn't begin until 3:00 pm, Rick and Kate pulled together deli sandwiches and fruit that the family ate picnic-style in the kids' play area. The casual lunch enabled the Castles' to enjoy time with Evan in a relaxed setting before their other guests arrived. Rick and Kate immediately noticed that he fit right in with Emma and Eli and seemed to enjoy his time with the younger Castles. Following their picnic lunch, Kate rescued the young man by asking, "Evan, could I borrow your muscles to help me to get Rick's Luke Skywater display set up?"

Evan began to reply, "Sure, Ca," But quickly corrected himself, saying, "Sure, Kate, I'd be glad to help."

The adults stood, promising Eli and Emma that Evan would come back to play after he helped Mommy with a heavy cooler. Earlier, Kate had set the cooler in the laundry room, so while the two were alone, Kate shared, "Evan, thank you so much for taking the time to play with the kids. I can tell they are enjoying their time with you."

"There is no need to thank me, Kate. Playing with the kids reminds me of when I visit Jon and his family. I always enjoy the one-on-one time I get to spend with Ben. Jon and I have hectic schedules, so our get-togethers have become precious to all of us," shared Evan.

Again, Kate is surprised at how relaxed and open Evan is so early in his relationship with Alexis. She then points him to the cooler, now filled with ice, asking him to carry it into the kitchen. As Evan enters the kitchen, Rick asks him to set the cooler on a mat he has set up just inside the living room and hands him the label to be attached to the outside of the large container.

When Kate returns to the kitchen, a thought occurs to her. "Rick, Alexis, did either of you mention to Evan that several people from the 12th will attend this little soiree?"

Rick and Alexis look at one another, with Rick speaking for both of them, "Oh, crap!"

Alexis is alarmed and worried that Evan will be embarrassed and explains, "I was worried about him meeting the family and didn't even think about who all would be coming to Dad's party. And that includes Aunt Victoria. What do we do?"

Kate and Rick were quiet for several moments before Kate called Evan back into the kitchen, gently saying,

"Evan, we are so sorry to drop this truth bomb on you, but we were so involved with meeting and getting to know you that we didn't share with you that several people from the 12th, including Deputy Commissioner Gates, will be attending the party."

It was dead silent in the kitchen as the color drained out of Evan's face before he sat down on one of the barstools by the breakfast bar. Alexis grasped his hand, saying,

"I am so sorry, Evan. This is all on me, and if you aren't ready for all of them to know about us, we can leave, and I will understand."

With their fingers intertwined as if no one else was in the room, Evan says, "Alexis, I am proud to be with you, and I would never be embarrassed to be seen by your side. Learning about the other guests is surprising, but I can handle it. If you prefer not to introduce us as a couple, I would be the one who understands".

Rick and Kate looked at one another, with Rick reaching for Kate's hand and squeezing it as they watched the two young people ponder this new dilemma.

Alexis leaned in and kissed Evan, saying, "I am proud to be by your side too, so I would say we stay and introduce you to your new extended family."

Evan returned Alexis's kiss, saying, "I'm all in."

Emma and Eli had just walked into the kitchen and saw Evan kissing their older sister. Eli went to Kate and hid his face in her leg, saying, "Mommy, Evan, kissy kiss my Lexi!"

The adults try not to laugh as Kate kneels, pulling Eli into a hug and reaching for Emma as she explains, "Guys, Evan and Lexi, are good friends, and you may see them sometimes kiss like you see Mommy and Daddy. They are only kissing because they like each other."

Eli, being his usual direct self, looked at Evan, then mimicked the stand Kate often takes when she questions something; by putting his hand on his little hip and asking, "Dos, you likes my Lexi?" As if he needed a personal confirmation. Evan rose from his place beside Alexis and went to sit on the floor, motioning for Emma and Eli to join him.

"Guys, I want you to know that I really, really like your sister. She is remarkable, and she means a lot to me. I would be honored if I knew you two were okay with me being with your sister. I promise always to be nice and kind to her. And if you ever have any doubts about how I am treating your sister, will you come to me, and we can talk?"

Rick and Kate had to turn their heads so Eli and Emma wouldn't see their expressions. But Alexis went over and sat on the floor, joining Evan and her siblings, as she also explained, "Yes, guys. I really like Evan too. We have fun together; he is very thoughtful and considerate, just like Daddy is with Mommy. I hope you like him because I want to get to know him better and spend time with him. But I want you two also to like him. What do you think?"

Eli let his little tongue slip between his teeth like his Mommy, looked at Emma, and said, "Whatz you tink, Em. Dos you likes Evan?"

Emma looked between Evan and Alexis, then toward her parents, leaning against one another as they watched their children's interactions, and answered, "Yea, Eli. I like Evan, too."

There was a short hug fest among the kids when Rick glanced up, seeing the time on the wall clock, and said. "If we want to get dressed for the party, we better get moving. Emma and Eli, Mommy, and I will help you get into your costumes, and then we'll get changed. Alexis, Evan can change in the hall bathroom while you change in your room."

Kate smiled as Papa Bear continued to watch over his cubs.

Everyone was in costume by 2:30 pm, with Rick and Kate double-checking the food, tableware, and utensils. Alexis and Evan were helping Emma and Eli adjust their costumes and laughing as they took selfies.

Rick and Kate joined the kids laughing and took selfies with each of them, including Evan.

Evan surprised Rick by wearing his Luke Skywalker costume. At the same time, Alexis resurrected her Princess Leia costume, including the hairstyle.

Just before the first guests arrived, Kate looked at Evan and asked, "Evan, if you don't object, I'll greet our guests and do the honors of introducing you to the members of our extended family."

Evan looked at Alexis, who only shrugged, then both told Kate to go ahead.

Except for Victoria Gates, their guests from the 12th were some of the first to arrive. Rick always teases the group, telling them they can never turn down free food. Once they have been greeted and offered drinks, Kate asks for everyone's attention.

"Guys, I am sure you have noticed that our Desk Sergeant, Evan Button, is hanging out near our daughter. We want to let you know that Evan and Alexis are dating and have our full blessing. And I expect each of you to welcome Evan to our extended family without any of your typical hazing and associated threats." She is looking directly at Ryan and Espo as she makes that statement.

Kate continues with her quasi-threat, saying, "And, you will answer directly to me if I hear that you are giving him any type of grief. Or even worse, you will experience the wrath of Little Castle. And you all know you don't want to cross her. So welcome to Rick's annual May the 4th Party. Eat, enjoy and have fun. Thanks."

It's quiet for several moments before the group laughs and congratulates Alexis and Evan, slapping Evan on the back and welcoming him to the family.

Later in the evening on May 4th…

Rick and Kate's guests enjoyed the themed food and laughed at Rick's standing note cards describing the contents of the numerous dishes he had artfully created for his annual celebration. Just as the festivities were wrapping up, Jim and Martha appeared so they could see their grandchildren and children decked out in their Star Wars garb. The Grandparents were impressed to see Evan in his Luke Skywalker outfit, standing with his hand on Alexis' lower back, as they assisted with hosting responsibilities and mingled with guests. Jim and Martha are not Star Wars fans, but they thoroughly enjoyed seeing their kids and grandkids having fun as they mimicked their favorite Star Wars characters. The Grandparents even joined in taking selfies with their grandkids.

After the guests departed, the Castles, including Evan, quickly changed out of their costumes, kicked in, and had the clean-up wrapped up within an hour. As the family was heading into the living room to collapse, Kate smiled at Alexis as she took a detour toward her bedroom. Again, Rick assumed his wife was making another trip to the en-suite.

In Kate's absence, Rick, Alexis, and Evan, supported by Emma and Eli, shared the party's highlights with Jim and Martha. Alexis proudly shared the opening greeting that her Mom gave their guests from the 12th Precinct. "Mom went into full bore Captain mode. It shocked the guests, but she was awesome as she welcomed Evan to our family and threatened Uncle Kevin and Uncle Javi, saying they were not to pull any of the tricks on Evan as they did with Dad. It was great."

"What your oldest granddaughter is not including is that Kate also said anyone who goes after Evan will answer to her, or worse yet, they will have to deal with Little Castle, which is how many of our 12th friends address Alexis. I loved everyone recognizing how strong the women in my life can be," Rick proudly shared.

Alexis kept an eye on her parent's bedroom door and stood to meet Kate as soon as she saw her standing in the doorway. After sharing a hug, the two returned to their seats as Alexis gathered her thoughts.

Once the conversation died down, Alexis stood and began sharing her heart, "Dad, Emma, two things I hated most about my trip to Europe was that I missed your birthdays. I talked through those feelings with Mom, and then she helped me come up with some ideas for belated birthday gifts for both of you."

Kate kept her hand on Rick's thigh as she could sense he was becoming excited as he listened to his oldest daughter speaking to the family. Emma looked puzzled, so Kate motioned her to come and sit next to her on the couch. Eli is sitting on his GPa's lap, also trying to figure out what is happening.

It felt like an hour to Rick before Alexis got to her point. "Dad, Emma, will you come up here, please?"

Rick didn't wait for her to change her mind. He quickly stood, extending his hand to Emma, and the two went to stand next to Alexis at the end of the sitting area. Alexis looked back and forth between her Dad and sister trying not to laugh at their antsy back and forth movements, until her Mom said, "Bud, please put them out of their misery."

Kate's comment drew chuckles from her Dad and Mother-in-Law as Alexis handed envelopes to her Dad and sister and quickly moved to sit next to her Mom. Rick and Emma paused for a second before tearing into their envelopes, and then they both stood stone cold still, looking at each other, until Rick looked at his oldest daughter, asking, "What are these? A joke? The ComicCon isn't until October!"

Kate squeezed Alexis's arm, saying, "I got this one, Bud."

"Well, Babe, I gotta guy!" Kate waited for a second to let her statement hit home, especially with her husband, before explaining how she came to be the proud owner of three tickets to a unique Con that will be held toward the end of June.

"Yea, Babe, a few weeks while you were at a meeting at Black Pawn, Mick called to tell you about a mini ComicCon that had just been scheduled. He was reaching out to a few of his best customers to give them first dibs on the early ticket sales, and he had three tickets left, so I bought them. Then I had Mick promise to take your name off all mailing and contact lists for the Con, hoping you wouldn't hear about it," explained Kate.

Alexis then took over the story. "Dad, when I was talking to Mom to try and figure out gift ideas for you and Emma, she brought up the tickets and said they could be my birthday gift to you and Emma. She then insisted I use the third ticket and go with you guys. So Happy Birthday, Dad and Emma!"

Rick rushed over to his daughter, picking her up and spinning her around, saying, "Oh, Pumpkin, these are awesome. Thank you, thank you, thank you." After letting Alexis stand back on her own two feet, Emma rushed to her sister, holding her tight, saying,

"Lexi, I, I, I don't know what to say. I've heard Daddy tell all of his stories about the Cons he's gone to, and they sounded so cool." She takes a closer look at the tickets and then turns to her Daddy, saying,

"Daddy, did you look at the small print on your ticket? They will have people from Firefly and Star Wars on mini panels!"

Rick had been overwhelmed when he saw the main label on the ticket, first thinking they were a joke and hadn't read the fine print. He did a quick scan, and then Kate laughed as she watched Rick's eyes practically pop out of his head.

Kate said, "Try to breathe, Babe! The tickets are real! Mick shared that a few Firefly and Star Wars cast members can't attend the October Con. So the ComicCon committee determined they would sponsor a smaller Con in June to ensure NYCC (New York ComicCom) could still host these individuals in the city."

"I don't believe it. I'm going to go online and read about the cast members. Emma, do you want to join me?" Asked Rick.

Alexis reached over to hug her Mom, saying, "Mom, thanks so much. Those were the best presents, and I am thrilled I'll get to go with those two crazies and join in the fun."

Kate returned her oldest daughter's hugs, replying, "Oh, Bud, you are so welcome. As I said, I just don't think I could handle trying to keep up with them for an entire day."

Kate then looked over at Eli, who was still snuggled in her Dad's lap, and said, "I was thinking that maybe Eli and I could have another play date while you are with your Dad and sister at the Con."

The word play date brought her boy out of his GPa's lap as he rushed to his Mommy, saying, "Weally. Wez gonna havez anudder plays date?"

"Sure, Tiger, if that sounds good to you. We've got a few weeks to think about what we'd like to do while your Daddy and sisters are at the Con. We'll have the whole day to plan something extraordinary for our time." It was Eli's turn to hug his Mommy; he crawled into her lap, leaning back with a massive smile, as he folded his little arms across his chest, looking very proud.

Following the success of Rick's party and the wonderful surprise of the ComicCon tickets, the Castles' have a couple of uneventful weeks as they look toward Alexis's college graduation and reception. Alexis and Evan see each other as often as they can with their busy schedules, and Alexis invited Evan to her reception at Q3.

At the Precinct, Kate received word that 1PP had approved her recommendations for advancement for Ryan and LT.

Ryan is registered and will attend the Lieutenant training course from July to mid-February 2025. Since the Class only runs 3 hours per day, Sergeant Travis from Robbery and Karpowski have volunteered to help cover his duties in Homicide during those hours.

LT will attend the 15-hour CIC (Criminal Investigation Course) update course mid-June. Since LT's promotion to Detective isn't dependent on his completion of the CIC class, Kate moves ahead with scheduling his promotion ceremony for Friday, June 3rd, so her upcoming announcements regarding her pregnancy and retirement will not overshadow his achievements. Kate is also grateful that 1PP has honored her request for LT to remain at the 12th following his promotion. With pending staffing changes, if Ryan passes his Lietenant's exam and potential changes in Robbery and Crimes, it will be a great benefit to have another Detective in her Precinct.

Saturday, May 25th…

Alexis's college graduation day is here. Evan seems to have had a calming effect on the young Castle woman as she is not as nervous as she had been a few weeks ago regarding her advancement to Law School.

Alexis has chosen to stay at her parents' Loft Friday evening and ride with them to her early morning ceremony. It has turned out to be a beautiful Spring day in Manhattan, and Rick and Kate are happy to chauffeur Alexis to her ceremony.

Alexis is looking forward to both of her graduation ceremonies. Evan's encouragement has helped her realize that it's okay to be proud of the recognition awards she will receive during the day. Alexis knows that she would never have reached this level of academic achievement without the love and support of her parents. However, she knows they will never accept those accolades.

On Thursday, Alexis received final confirmations on her recognition awards. Alexis will be recognized as a member of the Dean's List with a GPA of 4.0, and she will be honored as Summa Cum Laude for her graduating Class. Both recognitions will occur during the Saturday morning, University-wide ceremony. Her college achievements will also be celebrated with the display of honor cords for her outstanding commitment to her work with OMA (Office of Multicultural Affairs), GS Leadership, and Academic Leadership and Service.

Then during her Class Ceremony at Radio City Music Hall. Her parents, grandparents, and siblings will see Alexis as she receives the Peer-to-Peer Award for leadership in her Urban Studies group. In Alexis' heart, this is an exceptional award since it is the result of the recommendations of her entire study group.

After arriving at Morningside Campus early with Alexis, Rick and Kate found seats in the 3rd row in front of the stage. They took advantage of the free time before the ceremony to catch up on their discussions of various family topics until others gathered around them and ushers passed out Graduation Ceremony programs.

Rick was the first to look at the program. He grabbed Kate's hand, struggling to say, "Kate, look at this," as he pointed to Alexis's name. "Why didn't she tell us?"

"I don't know, Babe. But, if she planned to surprise us, she certainly met her goal," replied the very proud Mother as she read the honors her daughter would receive during her morning ceremony.

The two parents grip each other's hands as they watch the Columbia graduate processional enter the field and take their seats to the left of the stage. Alexis is fortunate to be at the end of a row and smiles as she gives her parents a small wave. Rick and Kate beam as they watch the ceremony, and when Alexis crosses the stage after receiving her diploma and acknowledgment of awards, Rick lets out a loud wolf whistle as Kate claps until her hands hurt.

Following the ceremony, Rick and Kate rush to meet Alexis in an area reserved for parents to greet their graduates. Rick and Kate pull their daughter into a tight family hug and immediately ask why she didn't tell them about her honors.

Alexis returns the hugs from her parents and simply says, "Because I wanted to surprise you. I didn't get final confirmation of the awards until late Thursday night, so I thought it would be neat to surprise both of you."

"Well, you certainly did that, Pumpkin. Saying your Mom and I are so proud doesn't begin to express how thrilled and proud we are about your accomplishments. You rocked it, Baby Bird."

The three clung to one another until it was time to make their way to the car. Rick checked his watch and saw they had plenty of time to return to the Loft, pick up Emma, Eli, and their parents, and head to Alexis's second ceremony.

On their walk to the car, Alexis asked, "Mom and Dad, would you not say anything about the awards yet? I will receive one more this afternoon, and I'd like to tell Grams and GrandPa about them all at once."

"What is the other award?" asked her Dad.

"Oh, Dad, let's stay on this roll and let you find out about it along with the rest of the family," smiled Alexis as she waited for a reaction from her parents. Her Mom shook her head, and her Dad huffed, trying to make a scene. But Kate grabbed his hand, which had her planned effect, and he didn't push his point.

The threesome made it to their car, where Alexis removed her gown and honor cords, carefully placing them in the garment bag she had stored in the backseat. She'll put them back when they get to Radio City Music Hall.

The Castles returned to the Loft just as Michael parked the Limo in the loading zone. Since Alexis's second ceremony was downtown at Radio City, followed by the family going to Q3 for her reception, Rick had ordered a car to avoid the hassle of battling downtown traffic.

Rick dropped Kate and Alexis in front of the Loft, so Kate could let Michael know the family would be ready to go in a few minutes. To hide her gown and honor cords from her family, Alexis slipped her garment bag into the trunk of the Limo, then followed her Mom to the Lobby's entrance.

Eduardo greeted the Castle women, hugging Alexis as he congratulated her on her graduation. He then surprised the graduate by taking a small package from behind his desk, saying, "Miss Alexis, please accept this small token from my family."

After thanking the man for her surprise gift, Alexis returned Eduardo's embrace, touched by the thoughtfulness of her longtime friend, then joined her Mom in the elevator.

After greeting Emma, Eli, and the grandparents, everyone took care of their necessities, returned to the Lobby, bid goodbye to Eduardo, and rushed out to the Limo. Michael did his usual personal greetings to Emma and Eli, assisting them as they climbed into the car, then greeted the rest of the Castle family. After ensuring everyone was comfortable and belted in, Michael carefully escorted his passengers to Radio City Music Hall, where the family would honor Alexis during her Class Ceremony.

Before the ceremony, Alexis put on her robe, including her honor cords surprising her grandparents. Following hugs and congratulations, Alexis made her way to the rear of the hall, where she joined the rest of her Class as she prepared for her second graduation ceremony.

The Castles arrive at Q3, with Alexis being the first to exit the Limo and run into Evan's waiting arms. He had been leaning against the wall next to the Restaurant's entrance, anxiously waiting for his favorite graduate. After a sweet kiss and hug, Evan holds Alexis at arm's length and says, "Were there any awards left for the other graduates?"

Alexis laughs and bumps shoulders with Evan as she leads him into Q3.

Maddie is standing by the door, ready to welcome the guest of honor. After hugs with Alexis, who again thanks Maddie for all she has done for her reception. Alexis introduces Maddie to Evan, answering the questions Maddie is quickly firing off as they walk into the vast banquet room that the Q3 staff has set up and decorated for Alexis's party.

Alexis looks over her shoulder and whispers in Maddie's ear before Rick, Kate, and the rest of the family join Alexis and Evan as they take in the beauty and simple elegance of the room. Emma has made her way to Alexis's side and reaches for her free hand, saying,

"Lexi, this is the most beautiful room I've ever seen."

Alexis slips her arm around her sister's shoulders as she agrees with her sentiment.

Q3's Head Chef introduces herself to Alexis and her family as she guides Alexis to the head table. In the meantime, Kate slips her arm around her good friend's waist, saying,

"Maddie, you have done amazing work for Alexis's party. Thank you. Everything is incredible and so beautiful," Kate says as her arm sweeps the room.

"Thank you, Becks. It's truly an honor to do this for Alexis. Seeing that light in her eyes is such a wonderful reward."

Kate then introduced Maddie to their parents, chuckling as her Dad simply said, "I believe we've already met."

Maddie blushed before she motioned for a server to direct the grandparents to the family table.

Maddie looks down and sees Emma standing near her Mom and Rick holding Eli. She greets both kids, thanking them for sharing their ideas for the kids' menu. She says, "Without you two sharing your ideas, we may have ended up serving the kids peanut and jelly sandwiches."

Eli responded to Maddie's comment, firmly saying, "My Mommy, lubs peanuts butter and jelly."

Maddie smiled at Kate and said, "Eli, you let me know if your Mommy needs a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, okay?"

Eli looked at his Mommy as she smiled, and he replied, "Sure."

Following her greeting of the Castle family, Maddie pulled Kate aside and asked, "Becks, I know tonight is for Alexis, but I wanted to ask a question. Since Emma had so much fun helping me with the tasting, I wondered if I could invite her to help me monitor the food tables after she's eaten. I will be beside her the entire time, and I thought she might enjoy seeing how we do the Buffett after all of her work on the preparations for the tasting?"

Kate looked at her daughter sitting with her grandparents and said, "I'll leave that decision up to her. It's fine with me, but I think it will mean more to her if you ask her personally to help you."

Thanks, Becks; I'll talk to her after she's enjoyed her meal. But now you and Rick need to join your family and have a wonderful evening. Check with my staff if you need anything else.

While Kate had been visiting Maddie, Rick worked with the Q3 tech staff and had Alexis's two graduation ceremonies running on loops on three large-screen televisions.

After Alexis's immediate family was seated at the main table, Maddie invited her extended family to take seats at two surrounding tables. Alexis nodded to Maddie, then stood, picked up her wine glass, and lightly tapped on its side to capture everyone's attention. Once she knew everyone was listening, she turned to her right, looked at her parents, and began,

"Mom, Dad, I know you hate these types of things, but you'll have to live with it." Her statement drew an immediate laugh from her family as she continued, "I can't conclude celebrating this day without thanking both of you. Because of the two of you, your support, your neverending care, and unconditional love is why I am here today. Your examples of honor and integrity in every aspect of your lives encourage me always to attempt to do the best I can in everything I do. You have helped me through my childhood experiences, some good and others not so good." Again, drawing a few comments from her family.

"If I fall, you both are there to pick me up. I know I can talk to you about anything, never fearing judgment or condemnation. However, some of Dad's advice can be slightly off the chart." She teases and gets the expected look from her Father, but she continues,

"So today, I want to publicly thank you, tell you that I love you both, and thank you from the bottom of my heart for all you do for our family and me. To Mom & Dad, Rick, and Kate." Alexis says as she raises her glass in salute to her parents.

The room erupts in cheers and congratulations as everyone stands to honor the parents of their grandchild, adopted niece, and friend.

Rick and Kate had been gripping each others' hands as they stood with tears in their eyes and pulled their oldest daughter into the tightest hug possible, whispering words of love and admiration to their cherished graduate.

Once the family had regrouped and shared hugs and kisses among themselves and Maddie composed herself, she led Alexis and her immediate family through the Buffett, knowing they would soon be mingling and personally greeting their guests.

Maddie smiled as she heard compliments from the family regarding the food selections Alexis and Kate had finalized, along with their artful displays. Today was an important time for Alexis Castle but also personally important to Maddie. She was thrilled to be able to give back to her best friend in this very personal manner.

Maddie remained close to the family table to ensure Q3 met every need of this treasured family. When Maddie saw that Emma had eaten and was beginning to look bored, she approached her, kneeling and whispered,

"Hey, Emma. Since your family has gone through the line, I wondered if you would be interested in helping me monitor the Buffett tables as the rest of the guests make their selections to be sure we don't run short of food or tableware?"

Emma's eyes brightened as she looked at her Mama, who smiled and nodded her approval as Emma slid out of her chair and accepted Maddie's hand as the duo walked toward the main serving tables. Maddie smiled at one of her waitstaff, sending a silent request. Within a minute, the waiter appeared by Ms. Q's side, handing her a familiar-looking binder.

Maddie leaned toward Emma, opened the folder, shared a few basic instructions, and answered her questions. Then the two set to work, reviewing the entire menu, including close inspections of the display set-ups for the primary food selections.

Emma proudly looked at several offerings, knowing they were ones she, her Mama, and sister had recommended. They include finger foods for the kids and two beef dishes that her Daddy and uncles will probably attack first. And most of all, three different luscious-looking chocolate dishes that Lexi and her Mama would love.

The two began to move back and forth behind the tables, constantly asking the wait staff to replenish dishes as they ran low. Emma's duty was to watch over the offerings they were serving their young guests. Kate watched from a distance, amazed at how comfortable Emma seemed as she answered questions from their young guests as they made their meal selections.

After receiving final good wishes and congratulations from their guests, the Castle family made their way toward the front of Q3, continuing to thank Maddie and her staff for an incredible night. After sharing final goodbyes, the family exited the main entrance, pausing on the sidewalk as Rick asked what everyone's plans were for the remainder of the evening. Martha and Jim asked to be dropped off at their respective homes, while Alexis invited Evan back to the Loft.

Since they were closest to the Loft, Rick asked Michael to make their home the first stop, then see Martha and Jim at their apartments. At the Loft, the grandparents thanked their children for a beautiful evening before hugging and kissing their grandkids goodbye, two of whom were already asleep.

Michael helped the adults exit the Limo before carefully assisting the sleeping children. Rick had Emma, who had wrapped her arms and legs around her Daddy.

Kate was preparing to carry Eli when Evan stepped up, offering, "Kate, please let me help with Eli."

Alexis looked at her Mom smiling as she stepped next to Evan, resting her hand on his back as the family moved toward the Lobby. Stephen, the evening doorman, had already called for the elevator and was standing with the lobby doors open, welcoming the family. As Evan and Eli passed through the door, Alexis paused and introduced Evan, indicating he was a welcomed family guest whose name was on their approved security list of guests. Stephen greeted Evan, then walked the family to the elevator, wishing them all a good night.

As the elevator doors opened on their floor, Kate went ahead of her family and quickly unlocked the door as the men entered and carried the sleeping children to their rooms. Alexis followed Evan to Eli's room and helped her little brother settle in for the night, with Kate doing the same for Rick and Emma.

After the youngest, Castles were snuggled in bed, having received good nights from their family, including Evan. The adults made their way downstairs, where Rick asked if he could get anyone something to drink.

Kate declined her husband's caring offer, saying she was whipped and wanted to get to bed. She hugged and kissed her oldest goodnight and surprised Evan with a one-armed hug as she walked to her husband, sharing a kiss and saying she'd see him soon.

After a few moments of awkward silence, Rick looked at Alexis and Evan, saying, "Evan, I know it's late, and we've all had a busy evening, so if you'd like to, you are welcome to stay the night; if you don't mind crashing on a couch? The small one in the family room folds into a pretty comfortable bed, and I can lend you some sweats and a t-shirt to sleep in."

"Rick. Are you sure?" questioned the shocked young man.

"Yes, Evan, I'm sure. Alexis shared that you had to work a full shift before coming to the reception, so I can only imagine you are as tired as the rest of us."

"In that case, I accept. You are very right. I am tired too and appreciate your gracious offer," answered Evan.

"Great! If everyone is in for the night, I will set the alarms and let you two turn off any unneeded lights. Pumpkin, I'll grab the sweats and t-shirt while you show Evan the facilities and get him some towels. Sheets and a blanket are on the bed, and the pillows are in the corner closet in the family room. So I think he's all set for the night," outlined Rick.

Alexis kisses her Dad goodnight, saying, "Thank you, Daddy, this means a lot. I hope you and Mom sleep well, and we'll see you in the morning."

Rick grabbed the night clothes for Evan, again telling him good night, as he returned to his bedroom, quickly doing his evening routine before climbing into bed and snuggling with his wife.

When Kate felt her husband wrap his arm protectively around her waist, she turned and passionately kissed, then looked into his beautiful blue eyes and said, "Thank you, Babe! You gave Alexis one of the greatest gifts possible. A day focused on her and her amazing accomplishments during her senior year in college. I don't tell you often enough that you are an incredible Father and Husband. You are the rock of our family. Your love and care for the kids and me have no limits. I love you more than words can ever express, Richard Castle. Whatever is ahead for us, I know everything will work out, and that's because of you!"

Rick pulled his wife closer and returned her loving kiss saying, "Kate, I am so in love with you too. As I have told you many times, I am a better man since you came into my life. And I agree, we will face whatever is ahead together. And, yes, everything is going to work out. PJ's birth, the move, everything about the kids, and your retirement. And any other curve balls that the universe throws at us."

Kate wrapped her arms around Rick's neck, peppering his face with loving kisses as she replied, "Always!"

As Kate pulls away, she adds, "And Babe, Even with it being a tough call for you to make, I heard you invite Evan to stay overnight. That was very thoughtful and caring and I know that means a lot to him and Alexis."

Rick pulled Kate close again and thoughtfully responded, "Evan is a good man. And even this early in their relationship, I can see they have something special. It reminds me of us. They seem to be recognizing it sooner than we did."

"I agree. I would hate to see them go through what we did," Kate paused before finishing her thought as she smiled at her husband. "But you must admit that when we figured it out, we sure have everything right now."

Rick agrees with his wife as he gently pulls her under him, and the two share the deep love that has grown between the two lovers over their many years together.

After sharing two beautiful rounds of very slow and passionate lovemaking, Rick and Kate collapse into each other's arms again as they share their, I love yous before they fall into a deep and very peaceful slumber.
