Stepping into the sunlight after three days without was shocking for a few of the contestants, needing to adjust their vision for a moment. For others like Leorio, it was hardly worth the fuss. Similar changes in light were common in the Zoldyck property. Well, that and his tinted glasses were helpful. The fresh breeze was lovely though. The slight salty tang was quite refreshing.
"Congratulations on passing the third phase," Lippo spoke once everyone was gathered. He was a short man with a mohawk, and a sinister look to him. One that reminded him of Killua when he was in a particularly "playful" mood. "Now you only need to take the Fourth and Final Phases."
"Only two more," contestant 294 spoke with a hint of relief bleeding through his tone.
Lippo pointed behind him with a large but thin smile on his face. "The Fourth Phase will be held in Zevil Island over there. Now, let's proceed."
With a snap of his fingers a cart was pulled out, a small box on top.
"For the next phase, you will need to draw lots."
"Really?" number 384 spoke up sounding skeptical.
"What for?" number 52 questioned under his breath.
Lippo's gaze grew even sharper, and far more amused.
"It's to decide who will hunt, and who will be hunted."
There was a slight pause. Perhaps to let it sink in, perhaps to sike out the applicants, Leorio didn't know.
"There are 24 number cards in this box. In other words, these numbers represent all the current candidates. Now, I need you to come here and draw your number cards. In the order you escaped from the tower. The first place, please."
"I am not old!" Leorio yelled at the two, gathering unwanted attention. "Just go do your fishing away from people alright."
"Okay," Gon agreed rather easily. He and Killua ran off to a more secluded part of the boat.
Leorio looked at the group he had been saddled with for Trick Tower. Hisoka had the first draw. He reached in and shuffling could be heard before he pulled out a thick looking card. One side white, the other red. But there were no other markers.
Without another word, Gittarakur approached, and in stiff fashion, slammed his arm into the box.
Gon easily scampered up to the box to draw his card.
Leorio followed. It looked like a simple box. He reached in and pulled a card that hung to the side. He noted the little lights that went off once he pulled the card out. Just like the others, it was red on one side, and white on the other, now closer, he could see a sticker with a pull tag on the white side. He walked back to where he had been standing, passing Tonpa. One by one, contestants pulled their cards. from the box.
"Has everyone drawn? Then please peel the stickers off your number cards."
Leorio followed the instruction. As did all the other competitors. He looked at his number, memorizing it.
"The number you see, they are your targets."
To no one's surprise, most of the contestants covered up their badge number. Not wanting anyone to have a chance at focusing on them.
"This box has recorded the numbers you just picked. Therefore, you can do anything you want with your own badges. What you need to do is take the number badges off your targets."
Leorio's eyes glanced over to Tonpa. He'd need to find out who Tonpa was targeting then.
"Is that it?" 198 asked, sounding a little cocky. "We don't have to fight to the death?"
"There are no rules on how you get the number badges," Lippo began to answer, "Do whatever you feel like. You can even kill your targets and take the number badge off the corpse."
"Yeah. That seems to be the fastest way," 197 responded looking a little thrilled while 198 let fear come over his face. Hm... couldn't be too hard to get his badge... Not that he needed it. He wasn't his target. Could he be Tonpa's?
"Is that what it's about?" 198 couldn't hide the fear in his voice.
"There's nothing to be scared of, stupid," 199 spoke up. Ah, a trio of fighters. He hadn't given them much thought.
"Listen carefully! Your target's number badge is worth three points. Your own number badges are worth three points as well. Extra number badges are worth one point each. In order to advance to the Final Phase, you have to earn at least six points."
Leorio could see where this was going. And it made his job both easier and harder for securing both his and Tonpa's passing. Protect Tonpa's badge if possible. Find his own target, as well as Tonpa's target. Or secure at least six stray badges to "share" between the two of them.
They were corralled onto a small ferry as badges were hidden away on a person's body. Hisoka notably wasn't hiding his number 44 badge.
He had his eyes on his targets. The little trio wouldn't stray far from one another, so they would be perfect to snatch up as Tonpa's numbers. As for himself, he did have his own target to take from, but it wasn't anyone as dangerous as Illumi or Hisoka he was sure of it.
Even if they were, he could make a quick getaway if he needed to.
And he had two hours to plan on the boat ride. If only he could get some space from Killua and his friend Gon and the additional Kurapika.
"So, the battle has already begun," Kurapika spoke to the small group. Maybe he meant to just think it, but Leorio doubted it.
"You're right," Leorio answered in a far more relaxed tone. "Everyone who's concerned has removed their badges. Hidden them away somewhere no doubt."
"So, you just cast, like this!" Gon said on Leorio's other side, showing Killua how his fishing line worked. Two somewhat innocent children having fun before they reached a potential murder island. That seemed about right. Still...
"Would you to do that somewhere else?!" Leorio yelled at the two. He was not going to deal with a stray line hitting him in the face. He didn't doubt Gon's apparent skill. He did doubt Killua's ability not to cause trouble though.
"Oh, were we bothering you Mr. Leorio?" Gon asked.
"Hey, just cause he's an old man doesn't mean you have to call him Mister," Killua snarked.
"Brat!"
Two hours later they had finally reached the island. The board placed to go ashore. It was then they were told they would disembark in the order they had made it down the tower.
Helpful considering, he was one of the first down from the tower. Not so good considering the two most dangerous people in the test being the first on the island. But life was hardly fair. Expecting it to be so was a fool's mindset. Two minutes between each person walking off, and one week to complete the objective. That wasn't too bad.
He could complete his additional objective in that time. Unless he was Hisoka or Illumi's target. In that case it was likely he could die or fail.
"...We'll now start with the first applicant!"
There was no hesitation from Hisoka as he calmly made his way off the boat and onto the island.
"It's been two minutes. The second person may go!"
Leorio had to stifle a laugh at the face the coordinator gave as Gittarakur passed. Seriously, Illumi needed another identity that didn't stand out quite as much. With his odd jitters and movements, he still easily made his way off the boat and into the forest. Time moved slowly as everyone waited.
"The third person may start!"
Gon moved exuberantly to the bridge. He gave a quick wave and a just as quick goodbye.
"I'll see you later Killua! Kurapika! Mister Leorio!"
Leorio let out a groan.
"I'm not an old man," he stated.
"The fourth person!"
Leorio hardened his gaze as he walked off the bridge. He had seven days to catch his targets and protect his and Tonpa's badge. Let the games, begin.
