Chapter 2: Trapped

Wednesday, March 24, 1986

The Records Room

When Dustin and Steve entered the Records Room, Steve immediately went to the filing cabinets. Dustin needed a minute to take everything in. The hundreds of filing cabinets, the desk with papers and post-its galore, and last, a picture of Brenner and all the experiments. There was a banner that said "Happy Birthday 007 and 014!" in the background. 007 and 014 were wearing their numbers on their numbers on their gray sweaters, and the two had their arms around each other.

He could swear 007 looked familiar, but he couldn't quite place him. Or maybe it was a her? They all looked so similar with their heads shaved!

"Henderson! Get over here! I think I found something!" Steve said from across the room. Dustin took the picture, thinking it would be nice to show the others, but also because he needed to know who 007 was. "What is it?" Dustin asked.

"Look at all this. It's a file for every experiment ever documented. And these tapes, I think they have them demonstrating their powers," Steve replied. He knew exactly what the tapes were, most of them belonged to him and Zoe.

"Holy cow! Dude, we hit the jackpot!" Dustin exclaimed. "Grab as much as you can. I'll walkie the others to meet us in the Rainbow Room," Steve said quietly. "Wait, how do you know where the Rainbow Room is?" Dustin asked. Oh shoot, Steve thought. He let it slip. He needed to think of something fast. Well, he hadn't used advanced intelligence in a while.

"We passed it a while ago. Didn't you see it?" Steve asked. He hated lying to Dustin. He hated lying to everyone, but he couldn't tell them. Not yet. "I don't think so," Dustin replied, eyeing Steve suspiciously.

"Whatever. Let's just take the whole file cabinet. It's not far."

"Are you crazy?! And what about the other cabinets?"

"We have everything we need in this one. Just trust me."

Steve pulled out his walkie-talkie and told everyone to meet in the Rainbow Room. Steve used a bit of telekinesis to lift the file cabinet, and it was too dark to see the blood leaking from his nose.

"Steve, are you sure you're ok? You've been really quiet."

"I'm fine, man. Just tired." Steve replied. It was true. Since he rarely used his powers anymore, Steve was feeling particularly exhausted. "It's fine, though. The Rainbow Room is right down the hall." Dustin was getting really concerned. He decided to pick up the pace a little. Steve needed a break. The quicker they got to the Rainbow Room, the quicker they would get out of here, the quicker Steve could rest.

When they got to the Rainbow Room, everyone else was already there. Steve was just about ready to collapse when he and Dustin entered. "Woah! Easy there dingus!" Robin exclaimed as she, Nancy, and Hopper rushed over to the two helping them drag the cabinet.

The Rainbow Room was the only room that still had light, so Nancy saw Steve's pale complexion and bloody nose. "Steve! Your nose is bleeding!" She said worriedly. Steve just wiped his nose with his sleeve and set down the cabinet on the floor, not being able to carry it anymore.

"I'm fine Nance. We hit a few bumps on the way here," Steve said, glaring at Dustin. The younger boy kept tripping over his own two feet, causing him to jolt the filing cabinet forward, right into Steve's face. It never hit Steve, luckily, but it did give him a pretty good excuse for the bloody nose.

That's when things decided to take a turn for the worst. The ground started quaking with great force. Ever since the Upside Down started leaking into Hawkins, earthquakes quickly followed by town-wide blackouts have been pretty regular. This time was no exception. What the group didn't know was that after the lights went out, and as the tremors continued, huge chunks of the ceiling fell in front of the door, blocking the only exit completely.

"Woah, that might've been the biggest one yet!" Robin exclaimed. "Let's get out of here. Dustin, can you get the door?" Nancy asked. The rest of the group lifted the cabinet. Steve continued to use his powers, hoping no one would notice. The lights started flickering back on, and that's when everyone's expressions shifted from neutral to sheer horror as they set down the massive cabinet.

"You've got to be kidding…"

"Jesus…"

"Oh no. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no! This can't be happening!"

"We're…we're-"

"Trapped."
