It doesn't take long for the room upstairs to be ready, and Emmett wheels me there with Edward right behind us. A blonde nurse greets us outside one of the rooms, smiling softly.
"I'm Rosalie," she says. "I'll be with you until seven tonight. Let's get you settled and on the monitors."
"You're in luck, Bells," Emmett says, helping me up and onto the edge of the bed. "She's the best the hospital's got."
"I am," she says with a smirk. "Now, both of you get out so I can help her change."
"I'm going to put my orders in," Edward says. "I'll come back in before I head back to my office, all right?"
I nod, mumbling a thank you before they both leave us alone. It takes a good amount of my strength to change into the oversized hospital gown, and then Rosalie puts the heart, oxygen, and blood pressure monitor on me. The air from the tubing helps some, but I still feel a little short of breath—not near as bad though.
"Don't ever tell your brother this, but he's one of my favorite doctors here," she says, preparing to put an IV in. "You're lucky to have him looking after you. And Dr. Masen, well, he ain't bad to look at, is he?"
I shake my head, smiling. "No, he's not. Do you know him well?"
"No, he's still pretty new. He seems to actually care though—unlike some of the heart docs I've met. Usually, they're a bit callous. Not as bad as neuro ones, but still. All right, little pinch, okay?"
I nod, looking away as she puts the IV in my arm. Once she hangs fluids, she gets me a few warm blankets, noticing my slight shiver.
I like her, needless to say.
Once she's done and I'm situated in the slightly uncomfortable hospital bed, she lets my brother back in, and I notice the two whisper to each other. And then Emmett winks.
Emmett only winks when he's flirting.
"You like her," I whisper-shout at him once she leaves the room and pulls the glass door closed. He snorts, shaking his head. "Oh, bullshit. You should ask her out."
"She's much too good for me, Bells. Plus, she's got a kid and keeps her guard up. Rumor has it, the relationship with the kid's dad didn't end well, and she doesn't date, so I'm not risking my ego for a definite no."
I roll my eyes, realizing he's oblivious. If I have to stay here for the next few days, I decide to make it my mission to get the two to go out. Emmett deserves someone good, and he's great with kids.
"Is the kid a dealbreaker for you?"
"Not when it comes to her, but again, it's not happening."
Is it bad I consider using my failing heart to get her to go out with him? Maybe like, "Oh, I just want to see my brother happy in case something happens to me." It's probably a terrible thing to do, but I keep the thought on the table for now.
There's a knock on the door before it's pulled open again, revealing Edward. He comes over, checking the monitors, looking at the IV, and then even pulls my blankets up to my chin and lightly touches my cheek. He can't say it, but I know he's telling me he's worried about me—and not as my doctor.
"You need to get some rest, all right?" he asks. "Someone will come in to take some blood and mucus samples from you, and Rosalie has my medication orders, so just relax. I'll come by after office hours to round and check on you. Emmett, can we talk for a minute?"
My brother nods, and I don't like this, but they leave together anyway. When Emmett comes back, I try to pry information from him, but it's useless. Supposedly, Edward just told him not to stay all day because I won't rest if someone is here.
That's technically true, but I don't buy that was all he said. Emmett looks too concerned for that.
Fuck my life. I think I'm really sick actually.
