The next few weeks seem to pass in a blur. Thanksgiving comes and goes, but sadly, Edward isn't around for it. He goes home to his parents in Chicago for the holiday, but we talk every day while he's gone. It's nice to make more memories with my family, but it's hard not to miss him being a part of them.
My appointment with the transplant team is today, and I'm not exactly looking forward to it. It's such a long day, and I get tired so easily now. I had to cut my hours at the bakery to just two days a week, which I feel terrible about. Ms. Sue, of course, told me not to worry and anything is better than nothing, but I guess I just miss it, to be honest.
"You ready, kiddo?" Emmett asks, coming down the stairs after his shower.
I nod, grabbing my bag, and then start following him out. The moment we close the door, his phone goes off in a siren ringtone, which signals a hospital emergency. He quickly answers and his face falls.
"Yeah, I can be there within the hour," he says, quickly hanging up the phone before looking up at me. "There's a huge accident with a logging truck. I gotta go, Bella. Fuck, I don't want you driving that far alone."
I get a brilliant idea and have to hide my grin. "Maybe Edward hasn't left yet, and I could ride with him."
He snaps his fingers, smiling. "Great idea. Let me give him a call."
He dials the number, and the conversation is short. Edward's just about to head out, and of course, he has no problem taking me today since he'll be there anyway. I'll have hours of alone time with him, which I've been dying for since we haven't had much since before I got sick.
Emmett makes me promise to tell him everything that happens, and then leaves as I wait for Edward—who pulls up within ten minutes. He's got a cocky grin on his lips as he gets out of his truck and goes to open the passenger door for me.
"Hello, beautiful."
I kiss his cheek, hoping no one is watching before he helps me get into the truck. "I hope everyone's okay, but I can't say I'm too upset that Emmett can't come today."
He nods, starting the drive to Seattle. "Yeah, I wish the reason were different, but eight hours with you seems like heaven. I even have an idea since we'll be so far from home."
I cock my head. "What? Pretend your truck breaks down and stay in a hotel tonight?"
"That's a bit better than my idea, but instead, I thought we could go on an actual date—restaurant and all. No hiding for one day. Well, except at the hospital."
I nod excitedly. "That sounds incredible actually. You're a genius, but you know we could always finish the day with my idea."
"I think your brother would come and get us." He chuckles. "I wish we could make our first date out a little more special, but on the way here, I made a reservation at a nice restaurant on the water. Luckily, Wednesday aren't busy."
Very lucky for me.
Thanks to May, Nole, Fran, Brier, and Meg for prereading and Sally for Beta'ing.
Thanks for all the love last night. It made all 13 shots a little more tolerable LOL. I still need 4 more in case anyone is wondering what rabies shots are like. 1/10 do not recommend. Thank you all for reading and reviewing!
