35. UNFORESEEN
A conversation. Necessary, she supposes. Nevertheless thoroughly unwanted.
"Are you alright?"
Of course she is alright. She has a glass of champagne in hand. It's her sister's engagement party. It is her sister's engagement party.
"Yeah! Just-" she shrugs, pouts her lip. If she holds it there for too long it might quiver. She might cry. She hides it with an ersatz laugh, "Didn't see this coming.".
It was a lie. Because she had seen him on one knee, with a ring. Somewhere at the back of her mind. A long time ago.
His head judders. Only enough to be noticeable. As if she had poured the last remnants of her champagne glass down the back of his neck.
"To be honest-" he murmurs "nor did I."
