Fruit
Levi had never been much of a fruit fan.
Now, that wasn't to say that he hated fruit, or that he'd refuse to eat it even if he did (food was food, after all), but there was just something about most of the fruit he'd ever tried- a weird aftertaste, a sharp bitter tang within the rest of the flavor, a hint of having sat out for just shy of too long- that had always made him somewhat apathetic towards it.
So when, one morning, there were slices of some type of yellow-orange colored fruit served along with the usual fare at breakfast, he was surprised when he took a bite and immediately found himself wanting more.
The strange person with glasses sitting a few seats down from Levi shot him a grin. "Ah! Peaches! We haven't had these for at least three weeks! Don't you just love a nice, juicy peach in the morning?"
Levi blinked at the odd person, then dismissed them as a simple chatterbox. He glanced back down at his food. Peaches, huh? He did his best to ignore the local interloper and curiously took another bite, studying the flavor.
It tastes familiar...
I'm pretty sure I've eaten something like this before, once or twice...but it's different from what I remember. What I ate tasted dull, and had a strange grainy texture. This is actually sweet, and it's...smooth?
Levi had never eaten something that actually tasted smooth before. He frowned. What makes this so different from what I've eaten in the past? Surely I haven't been eating... spoiled 'peaches' this whole time? He recoiled at the thought, then relaxed as common sense reasserted itself.
...No. No, they weren't spoiled, exactly. They never made me sick, and I know what spoiled food tastes like...No, they were just... old. Old peaches that weren't spoiled yet, but would have been soon if they weren't eaten. Damn the surface food companies...sending us their leftovers.
He growled low in his throat. The fact that the surface-dwellers could eat this well whenever they chose, while he and his people languished with whatever they were given? It was almost enough to put him off eating their food entirely.
However, food was food. He would be a fool to refuse to eat, just because what he was given was better than what he was accustomed to.
Might as well take advantage of the Survey Corps rations while we're here.
He hesitated a moment longer, then took another bite. I...actually like this fruit, he mused.
I wonder if there's other fruit that tastes better above ground than below?
Author's Note:
It's a little OOC, I think... but I wanted to see where a snippet of Levi trying a fresh fruit for the first time would take my brain.
Apparently my brain has decided to hop on the "Levi angsts about the people Underground" train. LOL
