Never Enough

I thought Bella looked sheepish as she parked. Her cheeks were fuller and glowing rosy and perfect. I liked the change.

She was in a 2006 Honda CR-V today. Something safer than the old Accord. I liked that.

As she slammed the door I froze. Bella hadn't simply put on weight.

I'd noticed idly, as she pulled up, a sound I couldn't place.

She giggled at my expression, laying one hand over her abdomen as she approached.

"I have some news," she said, stopping three feet away.

"I'd say so." I grinned. "Congratulations, Bella. Truly."

"Thank you."

"A boy or a girl?"

"A boy."

"I can hear his heart."

"You can?" she demanded, immediately taken by emotion. "I mean, duh, of course you can - "

"And his thoughts..." I stared at her listening.

"Really?"

"It's not something I can really make sense of. Just the tenor, I guess. Though he seems tired."

"Oh my God..."

"It's loud - his thoughts... like Jacob's always were."

"Oh," she exhaled.
