Chapter 14: A Million Stairs

Amu attempted to call Kukai, but her calls were being redirected to voicemail. Amu's last resort was to climb a ladder to his room and tap at his window. Kukai was shocked to see Amu's head and let him in. "That's an odd way of visiting someone at home."

Amu forced a smile and said, "Please hear me out."

"I guess that's the least I can do when you took the effort to climb a ladder despite your cowardly nature." For the first time, Amu heard Kukai make a sarcastic remark. She would have pointed it out under different circumstances but now was not the right time for it.

"I love you, Kukai. I am selfish, I am stupid, but what I am sure of is that I love you."

"Is it also for that reason that you went to New York and had a fun time with your boyfriend?"

"You might not believe me, but nothing happened while we were in New York. The siblings were too busy with the event that there was no room for anything."

"But you still went there."

"Yes, as I have said, I am selfish and stupid. The reason I went there was to break up with Ikuto."

"I heard everything at the live event, Amu. Those were not the words of someone who had been broken up with."

"I was going to break up with him on the last day, but their surprise beat me to it."

"Should I just go ahead and believe everything you're saying to me?"

"I want you to believe in me and trust in me. I rushed back to you the moment I returned. We can call Utau right now. I broke up with Ikuto the moment we reached the airport. Kukai, please believe me. I will do anything to prove that I am not lying."

"Amu, for argument's sake, let us say that I believe you. But for how long have you been two-timing me? Was it from the very start of our relationship? Were you already dating Ikuto before you became my girlfriend?"

"Yes, Kukai." Amu knew that there was already no point in lying. She also promised herself that she will only tell the truth.

"That is the issue here, Amu. It does not matter whether what you explained just now was true or not. Because you have been lying to me since the start of our relationship. My heart is aching right now Amu. I guess it would not have hurt this much if I also did not love you this much. But even though I love you, I cannot be with you. To be honest, I was almost swayed into wanting you back when I found out that you chose me over someone who confessed his love for you in a live event. Cause that is enough proof of how much you love me. What I am saying is, that I love you, but I can no longer trust you. I am sorry Amu, but even if you climb a million stairs, we cannot be together."

After hearing Kukai speak, Amu knew that no matter what effort she put in, Kukai was resolved to not get back together with her. Amu was willing to beg but she knew in her heart that it would just make things worse.

She smiled to cover up her disappointment. "You are right Kukai. I might have said and done the same thing if it was the reverse. But I wanted to try. I love you so much that I did not want to give up just yet. I am sorry for coming here even though you did not want to see me. I will get going now." Amu bowed her head.

Kukai tried to make one last joke. "Come on, Amu, I will walk you home. This time, let us exit via the normal door."

Amu was too out of it and before she knew it, she was already staring at her doorway. She received a text from Kukai as she was about to enter the house.

Let us avoid each other starting tomorrow.
