Clint walked through the portal and saw the wasteland that the world has turned into. There was nothing but death and destruction everywhere. Either destroyed buildings, overgrown plant life, or dead bodies and-or skeletons.
"My God," Clint whispered in shock. "What happened here?"
He kept walking and as he did, he appears to have stepped on a trap because a bell rang, and he was met with a group of men walking and aiming their weapons toward Clint. Their weapons consisted of spheres, worn-down guns, and axes, making them look like they were coming from a Mad Max convention.
"Are you a fighter, or are you food?" Their leader asked Clint.
Clint looked around, almost as if he didn't think he was asking him this but someone else. But after seeing he was indeed talking to Clint; he had no idea what to say after hearing that.
"I'm just passing through," Clint told them casually.
"It is food." He reported to his men and Clint was shocked to see these humans have resorted to catabolism. Working fast, he reached into his back and grabbed an arrow to shoot, only for a gun to shoot and destroy his bow.
"Aw, shit," Clint whispered as he was getting ready to fight them when a portal opened, followed by a repulsers blast that sends a few of them flying.
Clint then looked and saw a bigger portal opening, followed by Ironheart, Hourman, and Dr. Strange exiting and ready for a fight.
"Ha! Joey! Riri! Rick!" Clint cheered at the (strangely) familiar faces. "Boy, are you guys screwed."
Before the monarchs could even understand what happened, Joey used the bands and yanked several of them in the air as Riri blasted several missiles and created a smoke cloud.
"Yeah, Ironheart!" Clint cheered when he suddenly saw through the smoke that Rick picked up one of the men as he screamed in fear and Rick BIT his face off. "Uh...what are you...what?"
Joey and Riri also joined in and took down the rest of the monarchs by eating them. The only thing left filling the air was their screams of horror and chewing on flesh.
"Guys, this seems like overkill," Clint stated to them in disgust, wondering what's changed over the years. And wondering why they haven't changed.
Riri then raised her face from the mist and Clint was shocked to see her skin is pale...and has a whole chunk of it missing, including an eye!
"Holy God!" Clint cried as he saw that the same was visible for Joey and Rick.
Joey's face had his entire left cheek missing, his suit torn and his left arm showing the bone.
As for Rick, he almost looked the same, just without the pale skin and the fact his entire right leg is just a bone. Riri raised her blaster to Clint when the Cloak of Levitation came in and wrapped it around her blaster.
When the blast went off, the glove was redirected to the sky. Then the Cloak tossed Riri at Rick, giving them an extra moment to escape.
Clint couldn't imagine the kids as zombies and less to the fact he didn't want to hurt them and took off running.
But that's when Joey used his portals to end up ahead of Clint and was on his way through when the Cloak stopped him halfway through.
Clint stumbles backward and is barely missed by Joey when the cloak spins him around and stops Joey by allowing the portal to cut him in half.
Signing in relief, Clint thought the nightmare was over when Rick came over and was ready to bite. Clint sadly let out a giant shriek at the sight when someone grew and shot Rick in the face. Nadia Van Dyne panted in exhaustion before turning to see Clint Barton was indeed here.
Mike was right.
"Go. You'll be safe with them!" Nadia demanded Clint.
A truck drove up and was revealed to have someone behind the wheel. It was a woman archer in the back, and a few other familiar faces in the back.
"What the hell is going on?" Clint asked her in shock, having never met the daughter of Hank Pym yet. "Who are you, people?"
"All that's left of the good in humanity," Nadia informed him.
That's when someone swings in and picked up Clint as he cried in terror for a second time.
"Hey, it's okay. You can relax." The woman told him, revealing to him that she was wearing a Spider-Man-styled Symbiote suit. "I'm just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Girl."
"Oh, really? Then what the hell happened to the neighborhood?!" Clint asks her.
"We'll explain later!" She promises as she and Clint saw a S.H.I.E.L.D. Hummer H3T driving up underneath them. "There's our getaway ride!" She then looked down at Clint's confused face. "Unless you rather be here for when he arrives."
"He?" Clint questions.
That was when a portal opened in the sky, creating a giant ship that appeared out of thin air. The ship was in the shape of a giant fancy sword that was followed by a few other portals opening near them. The portals then disappear after a vehicle exits them and starts to chase after them, as well as several jets coming out of the portals in the air.
"Oh, you've got to be kidding me." Kate Bishop sighed. "Someone wanna get on that?!"
"I'm on it." Melissa Gold said as she poked her head out from the back of the truck.
Looking up at the sky, she took a deep breath as everyone around her shielded their ears. Letting out an earth-shattering shriek, the jets started to lose turbulence and started to crash. A few of them did manage to go down, but a few managed to teleport and escape before it happened.
"Are those jets...?" Clint was trying to figure out how to ask when there was a man in a homemade iron suit coming up.
"Vibranium." He confirmed as he aimed a sonic cannon at the truck that was closing in. "Take this, Kang."
Releasing a blast of energy, the entire team ducked down as the blast reached the truck. When it made an impact, the truck was pierced, destroying the front of it. It also caused it to flip on its head, skidding down the dirt roads and into a ditch.
"Yes!" He proclaimed as he put away the cannon. "Is that all you've got, Kang?!"
On the sword ship, Kang was sitting on his throne with his wife Ravonna Renslayer by his side. They were watching through the cameras of the ship as the truck drove off, how they prematurely celebrated their victory.
"It would seem the last of the resistance is still on the verge of winning." Ravonna was sorry to tell her husband.
"Ravonna, my dear." Kang smiled as he reached and drew his thumb across her cheek. "You should know...I've prepared for such occasions."
Then Kang reached around his chair and tapped a button, waiting for the rest of his plan to unfold.
Back on the ground, what was left of the tank opened up, unveiling a second vehicle. It drove instead of six wheels on four, having a similar design to the other one, but this one came with two claw hands to rip their car apart.
"Uh...guys?" Hope got their attention.
They then looked down the dirt road and saw the vehicle.
"What?" Melissa asks.
"Don't worry, I've got this one." May proclaimed as she reached her hand out.
Clint watched as this Venom-Spider-Girl shot out blasts of ice from her hand that covered the ground. But when the ice reached the vehicle, it just activated spikes on its wheels, seeming to have been prepared for this.
"Or maybe I don't," May said in fear.
The device was then revealed to have some sort of device underneath it as it shot out disks of sorts across the ice for friction.
"Incoming!" Nadia said as she shot out a stinger that impacted the device. But to their surprise, the device seemed to have teleported rather than exploded. "What? Teleportation?"
"So...he's not trying to kill us?" May asks in shock.
"Is it sad to say that worries me more than when he tries to kill us?" The ironed man asked as he removed his mask.
In the process, he ended up unveiling to be a familiar face to Clint. "Pat?"
"Close." The man said as he raised his hand, his suit shooting a fist into the ice to stop the device. "There we go." He sighed as his suit's fist came back and retracted with his suit. "It's me, Clint."
Clint took a closer look and was shocked when he recognized the person. "Mike?!"
"Yep," Mike confirmed with a smile, only to replace it with worry.
He looked and saw the vehicle manage to drive over his shattered ice and kept coming. Sighing, Mike went up to the vehicle and gestured to the person in the seat.
"Swap. With me. You have better aim." Mike tells Kate as she sighed.
"Fine." Kate then got out of the seat, grabbing her beaten down and duck-tapped wrapped bow. Quickly grabbing her arrows, she took her place at the back, getting into her shooting stance with one foot on the back of the trunk. "Smile you son of a-"
Kate then shot out an arrow that impacted the first transporter which then vanished from sight.
The arrow had an explosive on it when it immediately appeared in the middle of Kang's landing platform. It started to bleep when Kang teleported into the room and placed something on the arrow, freezing it in time.
"Pitiful," Kang said in sorrow before turning to his followers and androids. "The last of the Resistance will be crushed. And Clint Barton will be ours."
Back down on the ground, Kate kept shooting arrows at the teleporters that the vehicle was shooting. Then when she finished them off, she aimed her last explosive arrow at the vehicle itself.
"Bang, bang, Kang," Kate quipped as she shot the arrow.
The arrow flew through the air and impacted the device right in its camera. That seemed to impact its major systems and the major systems were destroyed in the explosion. The outside might be Vibranium, but the inside is as easily breakable. It rammed off the road and slammed into the destroyed building.
"Ha!" Nadia cheered. "We did it!"
But then a third vehicle comes out, revealed to be a one-wheeled vehicle creation coming out of the wreckage.
"Oh, come on!" Nadia cried in anguish. "How many times have we been through this?"
"What does that mean?" Clint asks, trying to catch up.
"The timeline is a little screwed ever since he showed up." Mike tried his best to explain. "That ship belongs to a guy called Kang the Conqueror."
"Ugh, I hate when they put their application in their name." Clint sighed, only to quickly remember that they fought someone with that name. "Wait, Kang?"
"Yeah, you fought him once," Nadia said as she charged up another blast, quickly shooting down the wheeled vehicle. "Is that the last of them?!"
"How is Kang back?" Clint asks.
"We don't think it's the same Kang you've fought," Mike explains the current theories some of the smarter kids came up with. "We think he's a separate person, just using the same name. Either on purpose or it was just a coincidence."
"How'd you guys know I was coming?" Clint asks, feeling it was too fast how they managed to find him.
"Because we were told." May quickly answered as she shot out strings of webbing to latch onto the vehicle. The vehicle then finally crashed and blew up for the third time. "Okay, that has to be the last of them."
"And just in time, too," Nadia said when Clint noticed something was charging up as the car was driving.
"What's that?" Clint asks.
"Our ticket out!" Mike cried as he put the car in neutral.
But as Clint looked closer, he noticed how the location of the N was actually a swirling circle. As the car was put into that swirl, a portal opened up in front of them.
Kang slammed his fist against his chair, seeing that was as far into the timeline he could plan. Yet even with all of his backup plans, he still wasn't ready.
Ravonna noticed her husband's anger and pitied them now. "Shall I call her in, my love?"
"Yes," Kang confirmed in anguish.
Ravonna pushed a button on her own chair, contacting who was on the other end. When they came into the room, it was revealed to be a woman wearing a familiar skintight catsuit without the familiar cowl.
"Yolanda." Kang greeted as Yolanda Montez kneeled before the leader.
Yolanda had grown a lot over the years since she first put on the cowl. Her body has managed to become more flexible since her training and body have improved since her days as a member of the JSA. Her hair was also cut to be just past her shoulders to make up for the cowl. That in which has actually been bonded to her skin so that she never needed to remove it.
"My Kang." Yolanda greeted.
"Wildcat." Kang started as he stood and walked closer to her. "Clint Barton has arrived. And he's currently in the hands of the Resistance. What's left of it."
"With the death of Cindy Moon, they're on their last string." Yolanda was happy to say.
"Then you will go out there. Find the last of their party and bring me Clint Barton." Kang demanded of her. "And kill the rest. They pose a threat to the timeline, and they must be corrected."
"It shall be done." Yolanda proclaimed. "I've already managed to finally track their teleportation. I'll be able to find where they turn back up."
"Good," Kang said with a smile as he petted Yolanda. Almost as if you would for a pet. "When you're done...bring me their heads. You know how I love a trophy."
The truck then finally exited the teleportation, leading to an abandoned gas station that was in the area that the five of them have been using as a base of operations. Clint couldn't believe that the heroes have failed so far that it was only these five people left.
Mike then parked their car, happy that they managed to escape in the nick of time. They unloaded their gear and made their way down to a highway that Clint didn't even notice.
May gestured for him to follow them as they walked underneath the highway. "So... where did you come from?"
"Oh, my family was called in to help with the problem," May explains to him. "My original home was Arendelle. My parents were Peter and Elsa Parker-Oldenburg."
"Oh, those two," Clint remembered them from the Battleworld incident. "Didn't know they had a kid. Or married."
"I was a recent development after they got married. I was five when they came here." May says as they head downhill under the highway. "I was left with Mike's stepmother when the event happened."
"How'd you survive?" Clint wonders.
"He kept me alive," May said as a piece of the Symbiote came out for Clint to see. "He bonded to me when I was a kid. Kept me safe from danger for years."
"Wow." Clint sighed when he came across the entrance to their base. He was shocked to see the hundreds of pictures and candles that were placed around. "Oh my god..."
"We've been hiding out here for years," Nadia informed Clint as she waited for him to come in.
But the further inside he went, all he saw were more pictures. All the hundreds of people who were either missing, killed, or missed since the invasion.
"How many?" Clint asks them.
"When it first happened, hundreds." Mike quickly answered. "I was confined to the garage when it happened. We don't know what exactly happened or what went wrong. But we know what you guys were after."
"What?" Clint asks, knowing if he could find out what they were after, he could warn the others.
"Follow me," Mike said, leading the man from the past to a board. "This is what we were after."
Clint looked around at all the photos, seeing some familiar faces and some unfamiliar to him. There was Amadeus Cho in his Hulk form, connected to a string leading to a photo of Alison Blaire. Cindy Burman also had a string that led to the Black Diamond, Avery Ho and Meena Dhawan were also connected, then the last is Liri Lee. In the center of them, all of the strings connect to a glowing blue glass-like cube.
"What's this?" Clint asked as he gestured to the cube.
"That's something that we dubbed as the Cosmic Cube," Mike explains to him. "That's at least what we found from the information we gathered."
"Back then, AIM captured Liri Lee." Nadia took over as she was the one who was there. "Once they got her, they started to realize they could use her power for time travel."
"Which is how you knew I would be here." Clint took a guess.
"Yeah, but that caused things to change," Kate commented. "You talked about how most of us were alive and were struggling to keep us together."
"Just you being here changed the timeline. Not by a lot, but enough that things changed." Mike stated, carrying the helmet under his arm.
"Which means we can keep changing things." May proclaimed with a smile. "That fight alone showed that we already escaped."
"What do you mean?" Clint asks, wondering what she's talking about.
"Kang was ready with three different means of hunting us," Melissa explains as she was reminding Clint about the attack. "Which means that we managed to escape three times and he remembers or saw the times we won."
"How does he know?" Clint asks.
"The Cosmic Cube." Mike tries to explain how this works. "Right now, in your time, AIM has the power to manipulate time with Liri. But with the Cosmic Cube, they will have the power to manipulate...everything."
"And... that's what happened?" Clint was shocked.
"They saw the cosmic energy inside of Liri and decided to hunt down the rest of the Forces." Kate sighed, remembering how they failed to protect them. "We think if we can tell you and you make it back, you can warn them."
"But what about Fury?" Clint asked, remembering the message AIM received.
Mike became sorrowful at the reminder. "Nick died a while ago. We got the portal functional enough to send a warning, hoping someone would come here so we could tell them."
Clint was about to ask more when an explosion goes off, sending them all flying. When the smoke cleared, they saw Yolanda and a few of Kang's Ultron sentinels with her.
"Is that...?" Clint was shocked to see Yolanda was alive but apparently working for the enemy.
"Clint Barton." Yolanda greeted him with a smile. "I wondered if you were coming. Shouldn't have doubted Kang."
"You can deliver Kang a message," Clint said as he drew an arrow. "My arrow through your skull!"
"Ironic. Because he sent me to deliver you to him." Yolanda said as Clint fired the arrow. But to his surprise, Yolanda just caught it to no avail. "Did you really think that would work?"
"I was kinda counting on it, yeah," Clint admitted and looked to the Resistance. "Any ideas?"
"We need to get you back to the Time Bridge," Mike tells him and looked to the remaining Resistance. "No matter the cost."
All of them seemed to agree with this idea, something that struck Clint as they were willing to die for this chance. Nadia quickly shrunk back down, followed by May shooting out a web from the Symbiote and tackling one of the Ultron bots.
Mike formed the Iron Suit and shot out missiles from the back that all had the word BOOM! painted onto them. Melissa then also shrieked out to cause the dust to rise and give them some extra cover. The dust blinded the robots long enough for Kate to shoot out sonic arrows to disfigure the Vibranium shells of the androids.
Yolanda tried to detect where they were in the dust when Clint came in and tackled her to the ground. Holding her on the floor, Clint got a good look at Yolanda in her suit-merged skin.
"Yolanda, what happened to you?" Clint asked her, holding his bow to her neck. "What happened to the world?"
"The Event happened. It claimed all of us." Yolanda said as she drew her claws and sliced through the string, giving her a moment to attack. She kicked Clint and sent him toppling as Yolanda got to her feet. "And where were you, Clint Barton? When everything went to hell, and you were nowhere to be found."
"What?" Clint was shocked to hear he didn't help out. "What do you mean?"
"You'll find out!" Yolanda promised as she drew her second hand's claws out and was ready to attack again.
But right before she could, Kate shot an arrow into her leg, causing her to cry in pain. Kate then ran and kicked Yolanda down to her knees and gave Clint some time.
"Go!" Kate called, pointing to the truck. "It's charged for a second trip already. It'll get you to the portal!"
Clint looked around and saw the Resistance being taken down by the Ultron Sentries and got worried for them. "I can't leave you."
"You're not leaving us!" Kate promised as she turned around and shot an arrow, immediately causing it to explode and vaporize a few Sentries. "You're saving us!"
Clint looked and saw Mike send a repulser blast and fly back over to him. "The only thing that matters is giving that message to the others. We are one of a million timelines, Clint."
Clint wanted to argue, but it's not like he understood half of what they were saying anyways. But he knew he needed to get back and warn the Avengers/Justice Society of what was coming.
"Fine." Clint decided it was for the greater good and ran towards the truck.
Yolanda saw he was running and ripped the arrow out of her leg. "Sentries, don't let him escape!"
A few of the Ultron Sentries then turned their attention away from the Resistance and saw Clint escaping. Changing their objective from destroying the Resistance to capturing Clint, they immediately went after him.
Kate sighed and knew Clint would need help and ran after the truck as he dived in it. Once he made it inside, Clint pushed the button to activate it and started to drive off when Kate landed on the trunk.
"Together again," Kate said with a smile.
"Let's hope it's not the last time," Clint said as they drove through the empty dirt wastelands.
The Ultron Sentries started to open fire on them from above as Kate stuck her head out the window. Aiming one of her arrows with a glowing red tip, she waved it back and forth between the two flying ones.
"Eenie-Meenie, miney," Kate muttered as one of them started to go for a dive. "Moe."
Kate shoots the arrow and watches it fly into the air and pierced its glass eye. As soon as it made an impact, the arrow started to glow, causing an explosion to go off and take out the air support.
Kate sighed as she took out another arrow, seeing they still have a moment before the portal was ready. She took out another arrow and shot it, and a dozen smaller arrows came out of the tip and pierced the Ultron's.
Clint was impressed with her training but then knew that it must have been hard for them over the years. They seemed to have found every weak spot that these Ultron's had, and they never managed to fix it.
The alert went off, warning them that the portal was ready. "Great. Now what?"
"Put the car into Portal!" Kate cried as she faced him, that being a mistake on her part when a weapon comes flying down.
The device managed to get by undetected as it blasted the truck, causing it to fly and crash into a chasm. Groaning, the two of them looked out of the truck and were shocked when they saw that it was a man coming in a floating chair.
"Kang." Kate groaned out.
"Now, I can't have you running back in time, could I?" Kang asks them in a snarky tone
Kate looked and saw Clint was still in the driver seat and that the portal still had the energy. "It was great to see you again."
"What?" Clint asked, wondering what she was planning.
"Save the world," Kate asked before she reached up, putting the truck in Portal.
"Kate!" Clint cried in terror.
But when it went into Portal mode, the front of the truck vanished, sending Clint back to the portal, but also costing Kate an arm.
Literally.
Kate cried in pain as her arm was transported through the danger zone, meaning it was vaporized. Kang snarled, this never happening in his time, and he walked over to her. Grabbing Kate by the hair, he lifted her to look her in the eye.
"Where is he?" Kang asked her.
"Go to hell." Kate snarled out through the pain.
"You first," Kang said, nodding at Yolanda who stabbed Kate in the chest.
PRESENT DAY:
Courtney sent out a blast from the Cosmic Staff as Peter and Teresa were trying to start back up the portal. They waited long enough to know that Clint would be on his way back, and the AIM team refused to reactivate the portal.
Which caused them to drop things into their own hands.
"Is it ready yet?!" Cassandra asked as she used her bracelets to block the incoming blasts.
"You wanna swap places and try to hack into Advanced Idea Mechanics' time portal, I welcome you to it!" Teresa cried out, trying to focus.
"We got it!" Peter said as the portal started to open back up. "Come on, Clint."
As the bridge opened, they watched as Clint was running back, no arrows due to the crash, with a dozen Sentries on his tail.
"Are those Ultron?" Cassandra asked in shock.
"Worry about that later!" Peter said as he shot webs into the portal to blind them, giving Clint more time to run. "Clint! Run!"
"Protect the Forces!" Clint tried to give them the information.
"What?" Courtney asked, not hearing or understanding what he was saying. But she didn't worry about that as she sent a blast out to the enemies approaching. "Look out!"
And just out of the explosion, Kang came floating down with the Cosmic Cube in his hands.
"Run!" Everyone cried out.
Clint tried to run as fast as he could when he was grabbed by a mechanical tentacle that came from Kang. "Destroy the bridge!"
They then saw Clint vanish and they had one thing left to do. Kate shot bombs at the bridge and Courtney blasted it with the Cosmic Staff just before the Ultron robots could make their way in.
The job was done, but Clint was trapped in that future.
They needed to get back to Blue Valley.
They needed to protect the Forces.
