Winter at the Cabin
General O'Neill had an opportunity and he grasped on to it and made plans. He called ahead to have the cabin readied and warm and stocked for a get away. The married couple, Jack and Sam, each had two weeks leave, two weeks they could spend together and planned to meet at the cabin. A few days to be a normal couple.
As they lay in bed on a lazy snowy morning Sam asked if he ever wondered about the other "us" they saw on the video camera found in Egypt.
Sam had so many questions. "Did they stay in ancient Egypt? Are we our own innumerable great grandchildren? What was their life like? Did they stay on Earth? Did they get together?"
Jack said "Do you remember when we went to that alternate world...reality? You know the one with the long haired civilian Carter?"
"Yes, I remember. You kissed her."
"Her 'me' was dead."
Sam said "No excuses needed." Her voice became quiet and emotional "I wonder how she bore it? I couldn't…"
He rocked her in his arms. "I'm right here."
When she settled, she asked "Why did you bring that up?"
"Our Teal'c, without a second thought, blew their Teal'c away. I had a hard time wrapping my mind around that. And Teal'c said "Our's is the only reality of consequence." So I try not to think too much about their lives. But I want to make the best of the lives we have." Jack said this as he caressed her very pregnant belly.
"She tells her love while half-asleep
In the dark hours
With half words whispered low:
As Earth stirs in her winter sleep
And puts out grass and flowers
Despite the snow
Despite the falling snow"
Robert Graves
