Well, for this, I drew inspiration from my own visit to the dentist today. Although I had my wisdom tooth removed when I was like 16 or something, I thought it would be funny to imagine any Cullen in a dentist nowadays.
Summary: This story is set between Twilight and New Moon, during that summer before Bella's birthday. Jasper and Alice were never a couple, but they had been friends with benefits for some time. Jasper and Bella are mates and are just realizing they are in love with each other. This is a very silly one-shot. Not going to have a sequel as far as I know.
Have fun :)
RED MOON
Chapter 11: The Dentist.
Alice set up the perfect plan.
"Bella, would you like to come tomorrow and have a sleepover?" Bella was a sucker for sleepovers with Alice.
"I can only come in the evening. I have a dentist's appointment." She answered distractedly, trying to reach Emmett's character on the race.
Carlisle perked up like a meerkat. "What for?"
"Wisdom teeth…. Damn." She answered, and Emmett snickered. He's just derailed Bella's character.
"Oh. Is your dad going with you?" Alice could hug Carlisle right now. He was doing all the work for her. He was genuinely interested in her well-being.
Bella shook her head as she leaned on the couch, as if that would make her character do the same. Emmett snickered again. "You're not gonna catch me."
"Bella?" Alice called, repeating Carlisle's question. "Are you going with Charlie?"
The race was over, and Bella had lost. "No. He doesn't do well in the dentist." She giggled at the memory of Charlie fainting before she sat in the chair. It wasn't him being looked at, and he fainted.
Alice noticed how Jasper put down his book and looked at Bella as if she was a glass of water and he was a man dying of thirst. Or, more accurately, he looked at her like mates looked at each other. He needed to get these two together once and for all.
"Do you need someone to take you?" Emmett offered, looking through his collection of video games, trying to decide which he should challenge Bella on next.
She shook her head, briefly looking at Jasper, who had taken up camp in the loveseat next to Emmett. He'd been distracted and hadn't noticed the longing stare she shot Jasper.
Damn Edward for being an asshole and not wanting to let Bella go. Jasper and Bella were perfect for each other. Why did he deny it so stubbornly?
"Jasper can take you." Alice offered a little too innocently. Jasper looked at Alice, wanting confirmation of what the hell was going on. Jasper has been in love with Bella since they took her to Phoenix while running away from James.
Alice then realized why Jasper had been fated to come to the Cullens with her when she met him at that diner. It wasn't because they were meant to be together; it was because she would lead him to his true mate, the true love of his life.
Admittedly, they had had fun together. Jasper was good in bed, but they both knew it was temporary and with no strings attached. She was a little sad to let him go, but he was her best friend, and she loved him as such, and she wanted him to be happy.
When Bella went home that night, Jasper took Alice for a quick hunt. It was an excuse to get her alone. They had hunted a few days ago and were completely fine for a few more.
"What was that?" He demanded, crossing his arms.
"Jazz, it's now or never. Edward is out. This is your chance to tell her. She feels the same way. She longs to be with you! It's painstakingly evident!" She was getting worked up by the minute.
"It's an ambush. I don't appreciate being thrown under the bus. And you're ambushing her as well." He was more troubled by Bella being uncomfortable than by him being so. She was shy; she blushed with the brush of the wind. She would not appreciate this surprise.
"Jasper, stop. Have I ever led you wrong?"
"No." He sighed, knowing his defeat was near.
"You love her, don't you?" He nodded. "You are a damn empath. You know that she feels the same way about you."
"She's nervous when I'm in the room."
"That's the anxiety, the expectations. She loves you. She's my best friend. We women talk."
Jasper rolled his eyes. "You grilled her, didn't you?" Alice smiled innocently. "I don't like it when you interrogate her like that."
Alice's smile changed to one more sincere. She grabbed his hands. "It's adorable how protective you are of her. But I know my limits. I know her and what makes her uncomfortable. I know when to push and when not to."
Jasper nodded. "I know, sweetheart." Alice would miss their comradery. But logically, she knew she wasn't losing him. She was gaining Bella and helping them both get together once and for all.
"Now, you go with her tomorrow to the dentist and then think of something. But you have to tell her tomorrow."
"Will do!" He mockingly saluted her.
"Jasper, this is serious!" She complained.
He smiled. "I'm only giving you a hard time. I know what I have to do."
"I'm happy for you."
Jasper brought her close to his chest and hugged her. "I know you are." He kissed the top of her head. "I'm here if you need anything. Me being in love with her doesn't change anything, ok?"
She nodded.
…
…
…
"Are you all right over there? You look a little green." The dental assistant called to Jasper from her spot next to Bella.
Bella managed to locked eyes with Jasper, who looked funny holding her purse like his life depended on it. His eyes were solid gold, not having wavered once.
He did look tortured, though. Was it people's emotions from the adjoining rooms? Was it her own nervousness at having tools in her mouth?
He managed a nod and a forced smile. The doctor and the assistant went back to work on Bella's lower wisdom tooth. They had set up everything on the sliding table connected to the chair. Jasper was no stranger to syringes and injections but looking at someone putting an injection on another person's mouth was barbaric.
Granted, dental hygiene was better in the 21st century than when he was human, but that didn't erase the fact that he was restraining himself from sweeping Bella out of there. He knew he was acting like Edward, but it really was disturbing.
The smell of blood wasn't even tempting to him. The only thing keeping him together was the doctor's confidence and calm. She knew what she was doing. Bella looked calm, with her legs crossed and her hands resting on her stomach.
When the doctor got the first tooth out and put it on the tray with a deafening clink, Jasper was positive he was more than green now. That was barbaric! She then got some thread, scissors, and another needle and began working again. After she declared the right side done, she removed the bloodied cotton buds and replaced them with new ones.
"Are you sure you're ok? Would you prefer waiting outside?" The dental assistant looked at him once more.
"I'm fine. Not a fan of blood, though." Bella choked on her saliva and the water coming from the little hose. Damn Jasper! Give a girl a warning! Jasper sent her a wave of humor, and she managed a smile that didn't go unnoticed by him.
Perhaps, this day will indeed change everything.
"It's nice of you to keep her company even if you're uncomfortable." The doctor said, waiting for the anesthetic she had put on the other side she'd work on to do its job.
He shrugged and smiled at Bella. "I can't be away in a time of need." He winked theatrically, but he sent her a small wave of affection. He was playing with fire. Bella would make sure to make him pay for his teasing.
The doctor and assistant chuckled before getting to work again.
Bella thought about his affection wave and his presence there. He was uncomfortable about something, but he was still there for her.
She thought breaking up with Edward would alienate the rest of the family. But none of them seemed to know that she had called it quits a few weeks ago. Then, the better for her. She'd talked to Alice and was surprised to know that she and Jasper had never been a couple. They had been friends with benefits sometimes. He scratches her back; she does his, as she said with a wink. She should have felt intimidated by the history that those two had. Because couple or not, there was some history there. But all Bella felt was a sense of realization. Alice only smiled and patted her hand before leaving her alone.
…
…
…
Jasper was relieved to hear the doctor proclaimed Bella free of her wisdom teeth. The lower ones, that is. The stitches would absorb themselves, and the healing should be a straight line. It was a clean work; her teeth had been well positioned, so the damage was minimum, something Bella was grateful for; she'd heard horror stories about wisdom teeth removal.
When they left the doctor, Bella's stomach groaned. She smiled timidly at Jasper, who took her hand and guided her to the car.
"What do you want to eat?"
Bella smiled brightly, forgetting she still had blood-covered cotton in her mouth. Jasper laughed at her, and she quickly shut her mouth.
"I can only have liquids." She mumbled. To hear it was mostly incoherent, but he understood it perfectly.
"Ok. So, soup?" She nodded. "Broccoli-cheddar?" He guessed.
Her affection for him got out of control then. He'd noticed her favorite soup. Not even Alice knew that. He didn't say anything, and she nodded.
…
…
…
Forty-five minutes later, Bella was sitting in a dinner in front of Jasper, who hadn't let go of her hand once since leaving the doctor.
"I wanted to bring you today because I also have a few things to say to you."
Bella nodded. "You and I, we are something, right?"
He nodded, understanding what she was asking. "We are mates. But I fell in love with you because of who you are. I couldn't care less if you weren't my mate. I would still love you."
She smiled again, a bloody smile, which made her groan, and Jasper laugh heartily. She raised a hand and went to the bathroom to dispose of the damn cotton. She almost threw up at the sight of so much blood. She splashed her face with cold water and practiced a few deep breathings to get the nausea under control. When she succeeded and no longer looked like the female version of the Grinch, she walked out of the bathroom and sat back in her chair.
"So, we are mates. Where does that leave us?" When she'd been in the hospital after James' attack, she'd asked Edward to change her, she wanted to be Superman as well, but he refused. If Jasper felt the same way, there was no point in prolonging this any longer.
"I would like to turn you. The sooner, the better. But the timeframe is up to you. If you want to finish high school, you can." He shrugged.
"Are you really going to turn me?" She needed to be sure.
He nodded emphatically. "One hundred percent yes. I want you with me forever. I'm not going to play the martyr game and watch you grow old and die. I'm not that strong."
She smiled sweetly at him. "I will think about the timeframe."
"You still haven't told me how you feel about us." He could feel her emotions, but right now, they were confusing to him.
"I love you too." Her smile grew bigger when he kissed her knuckles.
"You're bleeding, darlin.'" Bella felt around her mouth, and damn, she might have been forcing the wounds by speaking too much.
She grabbed a napkin and went to the bathroom to wash her mouth with lukewarm water. When she came back, the waitress had put her bowl of soup in front of her. Jasper had a frown.
"You ok?" She asked, blowing softly on her spoonful of soup.
"Woman, I'm never taking you to the dentist again."
The horror on his face was too much. "Wait until you see what the gynecologist does."
