Chapter 3
As soon as Ciara saw Ben, reading To Kill a Mockingbird, she walked up to him. Ben is wearing blue t-shirt, blue jeans, and tennis shoes. He put a bookmark in his place and then turned to Ciara.
"Ciara, hey what's going on?" Ben asked with concern.
"Aunt Gladys called the exterminator," Ciara said.
"Why?" Ben asked.
"Because the animals are stealing food, I want to help them, there has to be something that I can do," Ciara said.
"Ciara, we will do this together," Ben said as he puts his hand in his. Then, they heard a car stopped. Ben and Ciara ran toward where it came from. They saw Debbie and three of her kids running towards something.
"Whoa, Mom! You hit a possum," one kid said.
"Oh, my goodness," Debbie said.
"Do you think he's dead?" another kid asked.
"Wow!" the third kid said.
"Touch it," the kid with the blue shirt said.
"Can I poke him?" the kid with the green shirt asked.
"No! These poor little creatures," Debbie said.
"What's going on?" Mackenzie asked.
"Come check it out," one kid responded.
"Debbie? I don't remember seeing a permit app for a gathering. Groups of more than one who wish to get…" Gladys said before she screamed.
"Timmy, get the shovel from the car," Debbie said.
"I'll go with him. Besides, we don't need him to get run over by a car, do we, Debbie?" Ciara asked.
"No, we do not. Ciara, you can go with him," Debbie responded.
"Come on, Timmy," Ciara said. Timmy followed Ciara to the car.
"Lights fading, limbs growing cold. I see a tunnel. Mother, is that you beckoning me into the light? Must move toward the light," the possum said.
"What do you think he's doing?" Timmy asked.
"Maybe we knocked his brains lose or something," the kid in the green shirt.
"Sweet music, I'm going home! Goodbye, cruel world! Ooh! Ooh! Rosebud!" the possum said before he "died".
"Now, can I poke him?" The kid in the green shirt asked while leaning to touch the possum.
"No!" Debbie, Ciara, and Ben said.
"You see? This is exactly why I called the exterminator. To kill them before they get hurt like this," Gladys said. Ben tapped Ciara on the shoulder and then the two looked at the animals taking the cooler.
"They're stealing the cooler?" Ciara asked.
"Yep, but I think something's coming," Ben responded. They see a truck that says "Verminator" on the side of it. The truck stopped and then a man steps out, carrying a case. Ben and Ciara looked at each other with worry.
"I believe someone phoned about an animal problem? The solution is standing before you. Dwayne LaFontant is here," the man named Dwayne said.
"Where have you been? I'm throwing a 'Welcome to the Neighborhood' party tomorrow, and so far, Debbie's car has killed more animals than you have," Gladys said.
"Stand down, sister. I personally guarantee that there will not be a living thing at this party. The Verminator is on the job. What do we have here? Didelphis marsupials virginianus. Approximately ten pounds, male," Dwayne said.
"I think he's dead," Debbie said.
"Oh, really? Do you, in fact, have an Associate's degree from Vermtech? I think he wants you to think he's dead," Dwayne said.
"I'm sorry, Mr. LaFontant. But, playing dead is the most effective way possums can to protect themselves against predators, even when they feel threatened by an animal or humans (A/N). I read all about it on online and it's true," Ciara said.
"You seem like a smart girl," Dwayne said to Ciara.
"Thank you," Ciara said.
"You're welcome. Look at him closely. You can see him breathing," Dwayne informed the crowd.
"I certainly hope he's not in any pain," Gladys said.
"I hope so too," Ciara said.
Then, the possum jumps up and starts running towards the hedge. Ciara gasped.
"What the…?" Ben and Dwayne said while Gladys screamed.
"Kill it! Kill it!" Gladys said.
"Thank you all for coming! You were a great audience!" The possum said before going in the hedge. Ben and Ciara sighed in relief. Then, they looked at each other.
"Ben, let's go," Ciara said.
"Yeah," Ben said. They went to his house, went to the dining room, and sat down in the chairs, trying to think of a plan to help the animals.
"So, we need to have a plan on how to help the animals and stop Aunt Gladys and the exterminator from hurting them," Ciara said.
"We know that we can't relocate them from their home," Ben said.
"I know Ben, but the animals are stealing food from humans. There has to be a reason why they did it,"
"Do you think that they're tired of finding food in the woods and they think it was a great idea to steal food from us?"
"I don't know for sure,"
"Alright, let's get to the backyard," Ben said as he gets up from the chair. Ciara looked at him.
"What?" Ciara asked.
"We're going to the backyard to find the animals,"
"Are you serious?"
"Yeah, I'm serious. Like I said, let's go,"
"Okay,"
Ciara got up from her chair and followed Ben to the backyard. When they got there, they heard arguing coming from next door. They look and see a raccoon and a turtle fighting over a wagon full of food!
"Verne, you don't understand! We need this stuff!" the raccoon said.
"No, we don't!" Verne said.
"You can't take it!"
"Yes, I can!"
"Let go!"
"You let go!"
"I have to have it!"
"No!"
They both let go of the wagon. The raccoon got up, picks up the chain, looks where the chain leads to, and realizes there's a dog! Ciara and Ben gasped.
"Oh, no there're going to get hurt!" Ciara whispered.
"I know," Ben whispered back.
"We need to help them,"
"And we will,"
They see Verne, the turtle putting his foot down and the dog toy squeaked. The dog, Nugent comes out of his doghouse and sees Verne and the raccoon.
"Play?" Nugent said.
"Uh-oh," Ben and Ciara said.
