Anny couldn't find Albert in his private compartment and hurried up to leave the train. She wanted to say farewell but the stop was a quick one and she needed to get off.
Patty was waiting with her parents and grandma at the station and ran to hug her. She looked happy and at peace. Anny was sweating and started to wonder if she was going to withstand the hot weather, but was happy nonetheless. They only had a couple hours before they needed to be at Saint Theresa. This new school was no less strict than St Paul's, but the girls knew that ahead of time and wanted to get back into a study routine, away from the war and all the sadness. She sent a quick telegram to Archie and told him Albert was no longer on the train. She also sent one to her parents and once in her room, started writing another long letter to Candy.
2 hours later, she was told by one of the sisters that she had a visit and was surprised to find Albert at the door.
-I thought you had left the train earlier! I didn't have a chance to say goodbye!
-Popi got off as soon as we arrived and I went to look for him. Since the train left, I'm stuck here until tomorrow. Did you let everybody know you're safe?
-Only Archie and my parents, Candy will know once I write to her. I also told Archie that you were no longer on the train
-why?
-He asked me before leaving to let him know if you were available and if I could talk to you during the trip, I usually sent him a cable at every stop
Albert started thinking. That was an unusual request from Archie, but he didn't press the issue. He invited Anny to dinner at a nice restaurant and left her back at the school. Although the sisters had bent the rules with such an important visitor, they didn't want to test their luck.
After that, he went and visited Patty's grandmother and left Popi in her care. He promised he'd be back soon and requested absolute secrecy. Not even her son or her granddaughter were to know he had been at her house. Popi wanted to follow but the old woman's strength contained him and calmed him down.
There was a train going back to Nashville that night and Albert hopped in. It was time to act without being seen and he figured Louisville was a good place to secure the bank's assets. He went to the barber and cut off his hair. He was all alone and could only count on himself, but he knew that Candy was his guardian angel and no matter what, she'd save him, just like he had saved her over the years, they were destined to be there when needed.
The train from Jacksonville arrived at the station and Albert got into the 2nd class compartment. At the same time, a group of armed henchmen got off from first class. They had just gotten the information that Albert was in town waiting for next day's train and was going to intercept him. Time was of the essence and he needed to be captured that night. They quickly went on to the Leon Hotel expecting to wake him up. The train left.
Hannah was tired of screaming, nobody would listen. She was left alone in the holding cell of the sheriff's office. Right past midnight, she heard noises and got alert.
-Hello my love, tired of playing to be a lady?
-Hannah couldn't scream. She passed out in panic.
-What's that smell?
-Oh sorry Candy, I'm trying to cook this new dish and I'm afraid I didn't follow the instructions faithfully
-Smells delicious! why are you cooking?
-Well, I figured you'd be tired after all day working, usually my father takes care of the kitchen but he's not recovered yet
-Thanks, Tom. By the way, what's up with all the presents inside your room? Do you have a new girlfriend?
Tom blushed. He looked at the stew in front of him. He took a deep breath and looked back.
-They are for you. I bought them when I was waiting for Dr. Mattisse in LaPorte.
