Chapter 3

Three hours later, Wolf and Chararomon were sitting by a fire built and lit by Wolf as they ate a dinner of fish and wild fruits and vegetables. Wolf had made a fishing rod and caught the fish out of the lake, which Chararomon had told him was called "Dragon Eye Lake," while Chararomon himself had gone into the woods to get the other foods.

Eating in a comfortable silence, Wolf was able to listen to the sounds of the forest all around him. It was so very different from the usual silence at night he was used to inside of the Yankee locker room. He could hear hundreds of thousands of insects within the trees and grass around him. He could hear the lapping of the waves on the shore of the lake, and the air rustling through the leaves and branches of the tree. It was the most peaceful that Wolf had felt for years.

Chararomon then looked up from his food at Wolf. "Hey Wolf, how did you know how to catch fish and build a fire?"

Wolf looked down at his partner. "Oh, well, when I first planned to go off on my own when I was seven, I was determined to get out of there as fast as possible, but I had no money to work with, and hadn't yet learned how to steal it. One week, I followed a troop of boy scouts out into the woods and watched them closely, learning how to do all of this. I also swiped a couple of their manuals while they were out hiking to learn more. It took three days of close observation and study, plus some more practice after, but I got the skills down pat."

"That's pretty cool, but..."

"But what Chararomon?"

"What exactly is a boy scout?"

Wolf looked at his digimon for a split second, then titled his head back and chuckled.

"Ah! That's funny. Oh, they're a bunch of nitwits who occasionally go practice survival skills in the woods, but mostly they just act like they're doing good deeds by making meals for people who aren't even badly off, and raise money that's just for their own organization. It's basically pointless." Wolf said.

"Okay, I get it now." Chararomon said.

He then went back to chewing on the fruit he was eating, but after a few bites, he stopped and looked up with a disconcerting look on his face.

"What is it pal?" Wolf asked.

"I don't know. I feel weird."

"Are you okay?"

"Yeah, I think so. I think I'm..."

Chararomon trailed off as a soft, white, glowing light encompassed him. It escalated to a blinding intensity with beams shooting to and fro off of Chararomon. At the same time, Wolf noticed an identical light coming from his digivice.

"Chararomon digivolve to... Revemon!"

The light ebbed away and Wolf came face to face with the new form of his partner.

"Chararomon, was that, you just digivolved, didn't you?"

"Yep! And I'm not Chararomon anymore. I'm Revemon! Rookie digimon extraordinaire!" He said in a slightly deeper, but just as amiable voice.

Wolf took in the new appearance of his friend. He was bipedal now and about three to three and a half feet tall. His skin had changed from dark gray scales to skin of a sap green color with only a few patches of scale plates on some of his joints. His eyes were large and a bright orange color. Several small spikes protruded from his skin, including from his shoulders and two extending back from his head just above his ears. His hands were like normal, human hands, except that they were the same green color as the rest of his skin. A thick tail extended behind him with an extra spike at its tip. His feet were large paws with four black claws for toes on each foot. All together, Wolf decided his digimon was even cooler now.

"Alright, Revemon, good to meet you!" Wolf said happily.

The two then continued eating their dinner without saying another word. After finishing their food, having decided earlier that they would spend the night there, the two laid themselves out beside each other on the beach, staring up at the sky. Wolf had no idea how outer space worked in the Digital World, or, if there even was such a thing, but all the same, he was looking up at more shimmering stars in the night sky then he had ever seen before. There were even more stars then could be seen in the forests of Earth, far away from civilization.

"So, Wolf, what are we going to do tomorrow?" Revemon asked.

"I've got a loose plan, but on the whole, I think we'll play it by ear. All I know is that it's gonna be fun."

They looked at each other one last time.

"Good night, Wolf."

"Good night, Revemon."

They then turned their gazes back to the stars and closed their eyes.

"I'm out. I'm finally out. I'm done with all of it." Wolf thought to himself as he drifted off with a wholly contented smile on his face.
