I do not own the Fullmetal Alchemist
'So do you think you can eat this, Nina?'
Winry was crouched down on her knees, holding a bowl of rice for Nina to try. She and Pinako were trying their best to figure out which foods Nina could digest properly and which she couldn't eat anymore. Chocolate was definitely out on the list, but so far all meats seemed to be fine.
Nina padded her way to Winry, dropping a red rubber ball from her mouth. She nibbled at the rice hesitantly before gobbling it down. 'Good, plain,' she noted.
'Good and plain, huh?' Winry said, scratching Nina's back. 'That's good, do you think you can eat any more of it?'
Nina grinned. This time, Winry didn't flinch, though a haunting finger still traced down her spine. Nina nodded in yes.
Winry patted her head and left. She sighed. It had only been a few days since Ed and Al had left with Colonel Mustang, but she missed them already. There was also the feeling of guilt whenever she thought of Ed. She grimaced at the reminder. She had never forgotten to attach screws in her automail, she hadn't told anyone yet, and hoped that Ed's arm would be fine without that one tiny screw that was as big as his height.
The thought about Ed's very irritating height made her smile.
Riiing! Riiing!
Winry's ears perked at at the sudden wail of the phone. Picking it up, she grimaced in embarrassment as Ed's voice came out awkwardly.
'What is is, Ed?' she asked.
'Can you, um.' His voice faltered. 'Can you make a trip to Central?'
'Why? Did something happen?'
'I'm not sure. The fingers on my automail arm are moving, but I can't lift the arm at all.'
'Did you get in a fight or something?'
Ed hesitated. 'Uhh.'
Winry huffed. 'I'm on my way.'
Ed's voice hummed in response as she put the phone back, ending the call. Winry rolled her eyes, wondering what he'd gotten himself into this time, part of her felt guilty for forgetting about the extra screw.
'Big sister?' Nina asked from upstairs. 'Big sister Winry?'
'I have to go off on a little trip,' Winry called as she grabbed her things. 'It's about Ed. I won't be gone for long.' She slung her bag over her shoulder and kneeled down to pet Nina's head. 'Be good to Granny, okay? See you, Nina.'
Nina watched silently and curiously as Winry left. As soon as she was out of sight, Nina jumped out of her bedroom window. The scent of metal from working on automail lingered in Winry's path.
