I do not own the Fullmetal Alchemist
Nina's heightened senses were on high alert as soon as she entered the urbanized area. Back where she was tracking Winry's scent, she was alone. Out in public, adrenaline pumped through Nina's body as her ears picked up noises from the roaring traffic to the flutter of bird's wings.
Alexander was gone. Nina could feel his subconsciousness in the corner of her mind, buzzing like an injured bee, but somehow she knew he was never going to resurface.
The thought made her sad even though she didn't fully understand what it meant.
Even for a little girl her age, Nina was bright enough to recognize landmarks. There were shops around that were familiar though she'd never been in some of them, the roads that led from one place to another. But she didn't need any of those memories, she needed to find the train station where she knew Winry had gone to.
Her senses told her when she was in danger. No one had spotted her so far. Her paws padded the ground softly as she hid behind buildings.
Nina sniffed the air. Winry's scent of automail metal lingered as a trail for her to follow. It was getting stronger as she made her way to...
The hospital.
Nina was confused. Wasn't Big Sister visiting her big brothers? Why was she going to the hospital?
Nina padded around the large building. There were windows everywhere, but she wasn't tall enough to climb through any of them. She walked to the door and tried to scratch it open fruitlessly, so she turned back and just began circling the place.
The sharp smell of disinfectant made Nina hiss and recoil. It smelled like...bad things. But she couldn't quite understand why she didn't like the smell.
Soon, Nina's limbs grew tired and she laid down on the grass. The entire day was just running after the train to follow Winry and trying to find a way inside the hospital Winry's scent had disappeared off into.
Nina's eyes closed and Winry's footsteps were unheard to her as the door swung open.

'Quickly-we can't let anyone see her.'
'I'm moving as fast as I can!'
Nina's ears perked up to voices calling hastily to another. Immediately, she found herself in the arms of two people and lashed out, kicking and scratching with her claws.
She fell on a hard wooden surface. As she turned to run out the door, someone stepped in front of her, blocking her way. Nina growled, posed to attack when she saw who it was.
Winry stood in front of her, her palms turned towards Nina. The gesture meaning no harm.
Immediately, the adrenaline vanished from Nina's veins and she jumped onto Winry, almost knocking her over.
Winry squealed as Nina licked her face. She managed to regain her balance, behind them a man with glasses closed the door, smiling at them. Nina couldn't sense any fear or hostility from him, and in Winry's presence she felt safe.
'What are you doing here, Nina?' Winry asked. 'I thought you were with Granny.'
Nina stopped trying to lick Winry and got off her. 'Don't go, big sister.'
The man with the glasses stiffened before smiling. A hint of worry was in his eyes.
Nina nudged Winry's leg. 'Don't go,' she croaked again.
Winry was silent before nodding. 'Okay, Nina. But I can't stay all the time.'
The man behind them cleared his throat. 'We should probably put her in the guest bedroom. I don't exactly want my angel Elicia to see her...you know what I mean, Winry?'
Winry nodded. 'Yeah. Okay.'
Nina glanced at them, confused, as they led her into a large room.
