A letter, that's what every new wizard gets before they start school. However, the letter that will change one special boy's life had nothing to do with Hogwarts. It was a warm summer morning at number four Privet Drive. The family inside were eating, not caring about the small ten-year-old inside the hallway in a small cupboard under the stairs. The boy was small for his age. He had black hair and bright green eyes. He picked up his glasses off of the shelf behind him and waited. He was waiting for someone to let him out. However, no one came. Harry James Potter was used to this. Sometimes they just forget about him. So, Harry waited and waited but as he heard the front door slam and the good-byes of his uncle and his aunt, he realize that they would be gone for the day. Harry sighed and looked at the locked door. 'Well, I guess I can—' Harry's thoughts cut off and he turned on the light when he heard something slide under his door. Harry looked at the letter carefully. On the letter, he read: To Harry Potter. number four Privet Drive Little Whinging Surrey. Harry looked at the return address, confused. He didn't know who Sirius Black the Third was. Still, Harry opened the letter and gasped as he read:
Dear Harry,
I'm not sure you remember me but I'm a friend of your parents and also your Godfather. I'm going to say this first: I'm sorry I wasn't there for you. There was a misunderstanding and well, I don't want to say what in a letter. However, I'm back now and I can't wait to see you again. My name is Sirius Black. I just want you to know that I'm coming to get you soon. I just need to finish up a few things. I will explain why I wasn't there for you in person. Don't worry, I'm here for you. I love you.
Yours,
Sirius Black
Your Godfather.
Harry blinked. Godfather? He had a Godfather? Why had he been placed in a home with people who would just leave him locked in a cupboard for the whole day? Harry sighed as he looked at the locked door and then at the letter. How would a small letter get under his door? The house was locked and who would write to him? Harry, however, wanted to write back, but he couldn't get out of his room. Harry let out a moan when he remembered that he hasn't eaten anything since lunch yesterday.
'This is going to be a long day,' he thought.
A few days passed after he received the letter from Sirius Black. Harry wondered if this Sirius was real or if it was some sort of cruel trick Dudley was playing on him. Harry was in the backyard weeding or trying to anyway. The hot sun was beating down on him and he couldn't stop thinking about the letter. He glanced at the back door before he pulled out the letter from his pants pocket and reread it. A small smile formed on his lips when he remembered that it was not a dream. He had a godfather, and he was coming to rescue him, but Harry didn't know when. It seems that his Godfather didn't know either, but he was coming to get him. He pulled up the last weed and stood up with it in his hand. He put the letter back in his pants pocket before he made his way to the door. He knocked and waited for his uncle to open the door. Harry's uncle was well, rather large compared to Harry. Harry wondered why his aunt had married him. He wondered why his 'only family' had taken him in, anyway. It's not like they liked him. Harry sighed and showed him the last weed.
"I finished weeding. Can I go to the park and pretend I don't exist?" Harry asked. He added the last part because he knew that would get his uncle to say yes.
His uncle gave him a look and nodded slowly. "Don't stay long, boy. Dinner is in a few hours."
Harry nodded. He then walked through the house and to the front door, ignoring Dudley playing a video game in the living room.
Harry sat on the swing set looking over the letter again. He was daydreaming about what Sirius looked like. How he would treat him. Harry closed his eyes and thought of him. Familiar cruel laughter startled him out of his reverie. Harry never could dream. Someone was always yelling at him.
"Oi, Potter!" Harry looked up from the letter to see his cousin Dudley walking towards him. Harry sighed but he didn't say anything as he tried to put the letter back into his pants pocket. However, Dudley snatched it from his hand. Harry stood up.
"Give that back. It's mine!" Harry yelled trying to reach the letter that Dudley was waving above him.
"Why would it be yours? No one writes to you, Potter," Dudley laughed, wiggling the letter in front of Harry's head.
"Give it back!" Harry called, trying to jump up and get it, to no avail. Dudley laughed and pushed Harry before he ran off with the letter in his hand. Harry got up and ran after him. However, he tripped and landed on his face breaking his glasses more than they already were. Harry flinched when he felt hands take hold of him and lift him up. He thought it must be his cousin or his uncle. However, the grip was gentle. Harry blinked when he got to his feet and brushed himself off.
"Are you alright?" The man who had helped him asked. Harry nodded and looked at the man, but it was hard to see because of his broken glasses.
"Yes sir. I need to go, though, thank you," Harry said before he started to walk back home. However, he couldn't see very well. Harry tripped again. This time however the man caught him.
"Wait," the man said, helping Harry up again. "Are you…Harry Potter?" the man asked, looking around before he pulled out something from his robes? Harry wondered why this man was watching robes but he decided not to ask. Harry looked at the man, confused. Who would know his name other than his 'family' and teachers? "I'm Sirius Black. I wrote to you a few days ago. I had some things to take care of but now I'm here."
Harry didn't understand what this man was saying. He did remember what it said in the letter, but he thought it was a trick or something. Sirius aimed something Harry's glasses, and they were instantly fixed. "There, now you can see your handsome Godfather!"
"Your… you're my Godfather?" Harry asked, taking off his glasses and looking at them in shock. He then put them back on when he saw his Godfather nod. Harry smiled a little at that and looked up. "No!" he muttered before he started to run. "I'm sorry, I need to get back!" Harry called back but Sirius sighed and followed him.
'Live with him? I'm living with him!' Harry couldn't wrap his head around this as he packed what little he had, hearing his Godfather and someone older talk to his 'family.' He couldn't believe this. This was a dream—yes, this was a dream. To think this started with a letter. Harry smiled shyly as he walked out of his 'room' and his hands fidgeted. "Um, I'm ready to go," Harry muttered but the smile on Sirius's face made him less scared. Sirius smiled as he ruffled Harry's hair and they walked to the front door. Harry looked behind him. He saw his uncle waving and Harry could have sworn he saw relief in his eyes. However, he ignored that as they walked out.
"Well, I must get back to school. I will see you in the fall, Harry," the older man said before he walked down the road. Harry didn't know what he meant, but he resolved to ask his godfather about it later. He looked at his Godfather who smiled at him.
"Right, let's go home," Sirius said as the two walked away from the house that Harry hated. Harry knew that things would be better, and he would never be forgotten again.
