The streets of London were everything that the small nine-year-old orphan thought they would be. People buzzed around and they didn't notice him. That was a good thing. Remus Lupin stared at everything, however. A boy about his age stood out from the rest. Remus could not help but stare. He had black hair and a large top hat. He had a makeshift outfit. It looked like he found it on the streets. The boy looked down at himself and sighed. Remus realized that he was just as skinny as he was. At that moment, Remus noticed how hungry he was. This was normal, however, as he'd been walking for seven days after he'd been sold to those coffin makers. Remus wished that he'd kept his mouth shut that day after working hard for a little bit of food. Remus let out a breath and looked at the boy again. He was laughing at something. Remus smiled and just watched him.

"Why are you staring?" the boy said harshly. He had a thick accent. Remus however didn't hear it right away because he was too shocked. Nor did he say anything. He blinked and let out a deep breath.

"No, I'm…. I'm not. I'm…. Sorry," Remus stuttered. The boy waved his hand.

"It's ok. Don't worry about it," the boy said, looking around him. A merchant walked up behind him. Remus looked at him. Food, real food. He licked his lips and heard the boy laugh.

"Hungry?" he said as he stole two apples from the basket. Remus would have gasped if he weren't so hungry.

"Yes," he breathed. The boy threw him the apple and Remus took a bite. He felt warmth as the first bite took him to Heaven. He never had something so delicious in his life. The boy laughed.

"Have you been walking for long?" the boy said looking at Remus who closed his eyes to savor the taste.

"Yes," he breathed again. "Oh, sorry, my name is Remus. Remus Lupin," he said, holding out his dirty small hand. The boy took it and smiled.

"Mine's Sirius Black," Sirius said, taking his hand. Remus smiled and released his hand after a few seconds. Remus took another bite of his apple.

"Do you live here?" Remus asked as the two started to walk down the crowded streets. Sirius nodded.

A few minutes later and the two boys were laughing through the streets. No one noticed them. He could hide here, and no one would care about him. Even though no one really cared about him in the first place.

"So, what brings you to London?" Sirius asked as he stole something from someone's pocket.

Remus raised an eyebrow.

"Need money? Running away from your old man?" Sirius asked, looking through the stolen wallet. Remus looked around to see that they were in an alleyway.

Remus sighed sadly. "I'm an orphan. I've come to make my fortune," Remus said, copying Sirius who threw his apple core behind him. Sirius smiled and scratched his head under his top hat.

"Well, I know a place that can help with that," he said with a smirk.

Remus smiled. He liked Sirius. He was kind and wherever this place was he was sure he was going to like it too. "Well then let's go then," Sirius added with a little laugh.

Remus laughed as well. Then the two made their way down the alleyway.

It was getting dark as the two walked up to an old house near the water. The wood was rotting. Remus, however, didn't care as he followed his new friend up the wood stairs.

"Father!" Remus heard Sirius call out as he slowly walked up the stairs and into a run-down home. There were wooden beds with no sheets. A large table sat at the end of the long home. "Father, I brought someone new," Sirius called again. Remus saw other boys of many ages playing and drinking on the floor. Remus played with his hands and rocked on his feet.

'Maybe I should have stayed on the street.' Remus thought as a big man with a long trench coat came towards them. He had the same eyes as Sirius, but his eyes were not warm, nor did he seem nice. There was another man next to him. He looked older with graying hair and amber eyes. Remus has never seen such hate in a man's eyes before. Remus looked away as he felt the eyes of the men on him.

"Where have you been? Did you bring back something other than this boy who we don't need?" the man roared. Sirius pulled out the wallet from his coat and nodded.

"He can help us, Father," Sirius said. Remus heard his voice shake but tried to hide it.

Remus tried to smile but he was shaking.

"Very well. Leave us, son, go drink. Boy, you stay here," the man said, pushing Sirius towards the group of the other boys. Remus watched him walk over to the group.

"What is your name, boy?" the ugly old man said. Remus took a deep breath, but he didn't say anything. There was a mean-looking dog next to the old man. He growled at him. Remus took another breath and closed his eyes.

"Remus Lupin," Remus said, his voice shaking.

"Well then, Lupin. I think you can be helpful with something. We need money and Sirius can't help us. You're small enough to help," The man said, grasping Remus's arm.

"What do you mean, Fenrir?" the other man asked. Fenrir just laughed and dragged Remus out of the house.

"Wait!" Sirius called as he ran after his new friend, but his father held him back.

"No! Don't you dare. The boy needs to prove himself." He said before Sirius stepped on his foot and ran after Fenrir and Remus. Sirius's father howled and rubbed his foot in pain.

"You are going to get it, boy! Get back here!" Sirius's father called looking at the other boys. "What are you looking at!" he yelled, making everyone run away from him.

Remus was dragged to a large house in a very nice part of the city. Remus had never seen so many nice houses in his life. Remus was pushed to an open window.

Fenrir held out a gun and growled. "Ok, kid, you are going to find a golden box and bring it back to me."

Remus nodded nervously, gulping as he stared at the gun.

"Now get in there," Fenrir said, picking up Remus and pushing him into the window. He didn't see Sirius hiding behind a bush behind them. Remus let out a shaky breath as he looked around. It was dark in there, so it was hard to see.

"Did you find it, boy?" Fenrir asked harshly.

Remus saw a box. He smiled with pride and picked it up.

"Yes," he whispered, just as he heard a door opening.

"Who's there?" Remus froze where he stood.

"Boy?" Remus heard Fenrir snap as he saw candlelight coming down the large stairs. Remus saw the light shine in his eyes. A man stood there. He looked younger than Fenrir.

"Help me!" Remus yelped and he heard yelling outside. The man walked over to Remus and he put down the box. Remus could see the man's black hair in the light and his worried hazel eyes.

"Please help me. There's a man outside that wants me to steal this and he'll kill me if I don't," Remus said over the yelling outside. Soon the yelling stopped. The man nodded and smiled a little to let Remus know he was ok.

"That box, well, it's going to shed light on someone that will be going to jail, as well as the person that helped him," the man said, and Remus was confused. He didn't understand but he was glad that he was okay and that this man believed him. "Now, what's your name?" the man said, setting the lamp on the table.

Remus took a deep breath and said: "Remus Lupin."

"Remus! Remus are you in there? "Remus smiled when he heard Sirius call out. He then looked at the man who walked over to the window and saw Fenrir knocked out on the ground and a worried-looking Sirius looking around.

"Hello, can I come in? I don't think my father would be happy if I came back and he didn't," Sirius said, meeting Remus's eyes. The man nodded and Sirius carefully climbed into the window.

"Are you alright Remus?" Sirius asked, walking over to Remus who nodded even though he was shaking.

"What's your name?" the man asked Sirius.

"Sirius Black. Please don't turn me in, sir! My father would kill me if he found out I told you my last name."

The man nodded.."My name is Fleamont Potter. Why don't you just stay here? I know I just met you both, but I don't want you to end up on the streets."

"Or a workhouse," Remus muttered, but everyone heard him. "Ok, so why don't you go upstairs and choose a bedroom to sleep in and we will figure out what to do in the morning," the man said before he walked away.

Remus was glad that he got a home now and a best friend who lived with him. He didn't have to work or do anything that he didn't want to do. Sirius was glad that he didn't have to steal anything anymore. He knew that this happiness would last him for the rest of his life.
