The one thing that Sirius Black hated about being a newly turned vampire was that he had to do yard work at night. Sure, he had to get ready for his party with his friends tomorrow night, but he wished he hadn't gotten turned into a vampire before he finished raking the leaves. Sirius sighed as he remembered that the whole reason why he was a vampire was because he had been raking at night.
"Well, that's what I get, I guess," The young vampire muttered under his breath as he finished with the pile of leaves. He held onto the rake with pride and looked to the front door. He was glad that Harry was asleep, but he wished he could go back to his old life. His old life had been filled with running from the law and pranking. He'd smiled when Harry had called him amazing after he had told him that he was now a vampire. A little giggle escaped his lips. However, it died down when he saw someone walk up to the front gate.
"Lord Black?" the man said, waving.
Sirius nodded and waved back. His hands played with the rake and his vision got fuzzy. Even though he'd fed recently, seeing a human after all the raking made him feel hungry.
"Yes," Sirius said, pretending to rake invisible leaves. The man cocked his head to the side in confusion and ran his hand over his brown hair. Then he blinked his green eyes.
"I've come here to tell you that your guardianship papers for your Godson have been approved again. I'm just wondering why you wanted them to be checked over again?" the man asked.
Sirius let out a breath and dropped the rake. He then stood tall and bared his fangs.
The man took a step back and his eyes grew wide with pity. "I'm sorry to see that, Lord Black. That, however, does not change things." He winked and handed him the papers, then walked back down the path. "I'll be back tomorrow night after your party to see how you and Harry are doing. Also, maybe you can get Harry to help you with the night work," he said before he walked out of sight.
Sirius stared longingly out the window from the shadows of his office and watched Harry giggling and raking with Remus in the backyard. Sirius laughed softly. He wished he could be there out with them, but he couldn't be outside during the day
"Harry, have you ever jumped in a leaf pile before?" Sirius heard Remus ask with his sharp hearing.
He saw Harry look at Remus. This made Sirius snicker at the "I'm 13, I don't do those things anymore" look the boy had on his face.
Remus put his hands on his hips and grinned. "You never got the chance when you were younger, I believe, so you can try it now. For Sirius. I think he's watching."
Sirius smiled and waved even though he knew that they could not see him. He saw Harry jump into the massive pile of leaves. Sirius clapped, but he felt sad that he was stuck inside. He felt a little better when he saw Remus wave at the window and then turn to bury Harry in the leaves.
"Remus, stop it!" he heard Harry whine.
Sirius laughed again before he walked away from the window to get some rest. It was late for him now that he was a vampire, and he needed to get ready for the night.
Sirius was shocked when he saw Remus and Harry sitting on the back porch around the lit bonfire in the backyard. There were leaves in piles around them. Remus waved him over and Harry stood up to pull him into his arms. Sirius felt warmth for the first time that day. He knew it would not last, but he was glad it was there. He picked up the glass of Firewhiskey off the tray in front of them. Sirius looked around more closely and saw that everything was set up. There was a bucket with apples bobbing in it set up in one corner. Sirius wondered why they were doing this before fall had properly started, but it was getting colder, and the trees were already shedding their leaves. Fall was starting early. Sirius sat down next to Harry who kept looking behind him.
"What time are the Weasleys and Hermione coming?" Sirius asked, following Harry's gaze.
Harry shrugged.
"Ron said he'd come a little after sunset but I'm not sure when Hermione is coming," Harry said, standing up again before he took a deep breath and ran to check the other games to see if they were ready.
Remus laughed. "Harry, calm down. You're acting like your mum. She worried too much about parties. I know that this end-of-summer party will be amazing."
Even if we had to rake for two days straight," Sirius muttered the last part.
Remus heard it and sighed with exasperation.
"You hate raking?" Harry asked, turning around from trying to fix the ring toss game. Sirius shifted in his seat and closed his eyes. "Why?"
He looked over at his Godfather and Remus who slowly sipped his drink.
"Because I was raking when I was turned into..." He closed his eyes and moved his arms to his body. He then opened his eyes and shared a look with Remus, who smiled gently at him.
Harry did the same.
"What?" Sirius asked, looking at Remus who was still smiling.
"I have a werewolf and a vampire as my guardians, and no Muggle would believe me!" Harry laughed again. Soon Sirius and Remus joined in.
A few minutes later. Ginny, Ron, Hermione, Neville, and the twins arrived. They all laughed and hugged Harry.
"Are you guys ready?!" Harry said as Remus and Sirius brought out more food and drinks.
"Yeah!" the twins cheered as they both ran to the food. Sirius and Remus both chuckled as they watched Harry turn on the music. Soon, the friends started to dance. Well, other than the twins, who were trying to dunk each other in the apple bucket.
"They had too much sugar I think," Remus said to Sirius who stood up and grabbed Remus's arm.
Harry and Hermione were tying their legs together for the three-legged race. Neville and Ron tried to do the same but found themselves with all their legs tied up. They flopped over on the grass, getting more and more tangled up.
"I'd rather bob for apples," Neville complained.
"Only if they're candy apples!" Ron replied, patting his belly.
Sirius went to go help them, but Remus grasped his shoulder. "Let them work it out for themselves. The night is young!"
"Come on Moony, let's dance and see if we can beat Harry and his friends at ring toss," Sirius said over the music.
Remus' eyes lit up with happiness as the two walked over to the bonfire and started to dance. Even though Sirius was a vampire, he found that he didn't care so much for he had a family that didn't care what he was, and he knew that everything would be okay.
