Today will be the greatest day of my life. At least I hope it will be. The rain outside is not too promising, but I just need to look on the bright side. That's what my mom says, anyway. Rain aside, I am excited to start school. It is going to be my first day at my new school since…well since everything changed for me. I have always enjoyed school, but ever since— I look down at my pants to see if my prosthetic leg looks too obvious.

But I think I'm getting ahead of myself. My name is Remus John Lupin. I'm sixteen years old. And now...I only have one leg.

A small knock comes on my door, but I don't answer it or say anything right away. I didn't know if it was excitement or nerves. A small sigh comes out of my lips as I limp over to the door and open it. My mom stands in the doorway with happiness in her eyes. However, I can tell that she is hiding fear and sadness as well.

"Remus, are you ready to go!" My mother asks, holding onto my backpack. I smile with a nod.

My mom raises an eyebrow, and I realize that she can tell that I'm nervous. Even though I keep telling myself it will be the greatest day. I do love school and I want to go, but my nervousness is kicking in.

"Yeah, let's go," I say, meeting her eyes.

She smiles and hands me my backpack. I follow her out the door of my room and downstairs. Stairs was a mission with my leg. I really need to be careful when I step down. This is why I use my good leg first and let my bad one go limp as I step down. It annoys me when my mother tries to help me, but she stopped now which is fantastic.

The car ride is quiet, and I didn't know why. I should be talking like crazy about how much I can't wait for school and the first day but for some reason I'm quiet. The car pulls up to the school. I see kids talking and laughing as they walk down the sidewalk. "I can do this," I mutter, hoping my mother hasn't heard me.

"Well, here we are. Have fun, dear," My mother says as I open the door to the car. I nod but my legs won't move. "Remus?" my mother asks. I take a shaky breath and finally get out of the car.

I watch my mother drive away. I am excited, sure but something inside me is shaking. I take a deep breath and turn around to look up at the large building. Banners line the outside. My eyes move to three boys talking loudly and laughing. My mind warns me not to go over there but my legs limp over there anyway. My leg hurts every now and then. Sometimes I have to take breaks from walking, but I never tell my mother when I do.

"I'm telling you, Regulus really wanted to come with me, but mother found out and grounded him. She didn't care that I ran away from home over the weekend. Regulus doesn't even care that he's grounded," One of the boys with black hair is saying to the others as I limp over to them. My leg burned but I didn't show it on my face. I'm used to hiding the pain. I wanted to rub my leg, but I guess that will have to wait when I see the nurse later.

"Hello," I say, trying not to sound shy. Even though I know it sounds like that, I still have to try. All three boys turn around and smile at me.

"Hey," The boy that had been talking says. He has warm grey eyes and long black hair. "I'm Sirius Black. These are my friends, Peter and James," Sirius says, moving his hands to point out the others. James is the boy with black hair and hazel eyes. Peter has blonde hair and blue eyes. They both greet me kindly.

"I'm Remus Lupin," I say, holding out my hand. "It's my first day," I add, shaking Sirius's hand and then James's and Peter's.

"Cool," James says. "You can hang out with us. People tend to pick on new kids, but you won't have to worry about that with us around," James continues as we all walk into the school.

I'm glad that they don't seem to notice my limp, but I know I will have to tell them if they end up being my friends. Maybe this day will be the greatest day ever. Maybe I have found my new best friends. A small smile forms on my lips as we all walk in. Yeah, I know I'm going to like this school just by looking at it.

"Let's go guys," James says as we all walk to the first class of the day, and I think that maybe this will work out. Things can still be amazing, even with my bad leg.
