Year 768X

It has been roughly one year now since Zain had awakened his repair magic and during that time period, he has been practicing his magic regularly with his dad nearly every day. Hence Zain learned a lot about what his magic can do, the one thing he learned and to his disappointment was his repair magic has absolutely no offensive capabilities whatsoever.

Kids his age have always admired mages from all the guilds in the country, especially if the mages were using "cool" types of magic. For example, fire magic, lightning magic, wind magic or any other magic that are destructive. These types of magic are what children around Zain's seem to admire. It's too bad that Zain couldn't awaken any magic that has somewhat any offensive capabilities but he has gotten over it now.

From when he awakened his magic till now, his father has taught him two pieces of information about magic. The first one is that, whatever type of magic the mage awakens with, that magic will be the easiest magic to control and use due to them being bonded to that magic. The second one is that all mages can use magic that wasn't the magic they were awakened with but it will be much harder to control and the power or capability will be a lot lower as well compared to their awakened magic. For example, if a fire magic user mage uses lightning magic. The power output would only be one-tenth to the power output of a mage that was awakened with lightning magic if they both used the same amount of magic to cast the spell, and plus it will be a lot slower to cast the spells as well due to the compatibility with mages not using their awakened magic.

After experimenting with his repair magic for about a year, he found out that he could literally repair anything as long as they are objects and he was touching it. For example, any rips, marks, tears etc that are on clothes. He can use his magic and the clothes will be as good as new. Or any sword that has its blades broken no matter how small the broken pieces are, once he uses his magic they will be as good as new.

Another interesting thing he found out about his magic was that whenever he uses his magic, the amount of magic drained from him depends on the quality and the size of the objects. For example, there are two chairs, one chair is just plain whereas the other chair has beautiful cravings on all four legs. His magic will drain more if he uses repair magic on that chair compared to the plain chair and if one chair is bigger than the other, the chair that is bigger will drain more magic when repair magic is in use.

There is also a time limit when using his repair magic. When an object has been broken, there will be a 24 hours time limit. But instead of Zain not being able to repair it anymore, the amount of magic required to repair the said objects will be doubled from the original requirement. If another 24 hours has passed it will then be tripled and if another 24 hours has passed again it will be quadrupled. (basically 1:24, 2:48, 3:42, 4:96 and so on)

In the past year, Zain has grown up a bit. He still had his short shaggy white hair but he has grown taller, about 115cm now and he was still wearing his white long sleeves with black shorts and his pair of brown leather boots but bigger. Even though Zain has gotten over the fact that his magic doesn't have any offensive capabilities whatsoever, he still wishes that he has at least one offensive spell in his arsenal. Especially right now when he is fighting a kid that was 5 years older than him.

The kid's name was Jura Neekis and there isn't anything really special about him. He was really tall for boys aged 11 and had short black hair with a pair of oval-shaped eyebrows. Jura was your typical big boy bully that was cocky and egotistic and nothing about him could make Zain jealous of him, personality-wise and look wise. Especially his eyebrows. But if there is one thing that Zain was jealous about, it was that he could use earth magic, a magic that makes use of the earth around the caster. Giving the user flexible combat abilities and defence abilities.

Lucky for Zain, Jura wasn't really a creative guy when using his magic. As the two are fighting, all Jura ever did was control the rocks from the ground, launch it at Zain, and use a rock wall whenever Zain comes in range and slash him with his wooden sword. Jura's attack strategy is simple enough and anyone can block off the rocks thrown at them but this was Zain fighting right now and all he could do was dodge the rocks.

At first, Zain was doing a great job dodging the rocks launched at him due to the training he did with his father during the past year. He did running and some muscle building so it would make sense why he was in good shape even though he is 6 years old. Nothing buff or anything but lean. However, Zain was getting more and more tired as time went on whereas Jura seemed completely fine.

A few minutes later, Zain has slowed down significantly and the rocks launched at him get closer and closer at hitting him. 'Damn it' Zain mentally yelled in his head as he saw a rock was about to hit him in his stomach and soon enough, he got hit in the stomach by a rock. Saliva was spitting out from his mouth as he was on the ground clutching his stomach in a fetal position.

"Not so tough are you now you little white shit head," Jura exclaimed cockily as he walked towards the fetal Zain and stared down at him with mockery.

"Screw you, eyebrows," Zain replied in pain as he tilted his head up to Jura so he could see him. He was replied with a rock wall on top of him, pushing him flat into the hard ground and Jura angrily yelled out. "What did you say you little shit!?"

"I said… screw you… eyebrows." Zain slowly replied with pain in his voice and Jura kept pushing the rock wall on him. After about 30 seconds had passed by, Jura removed the rock wall from Zain and started to walk away from Zain heading to his home.

"Tch, what a waste of time," he mumbled out loud leaving Zain on the ground in exhaustion and pain.

An hour has passed since the fight between Zain and Jura, Zain has now gone back to his home. It is now late afternoon now and Zain's mum is in the kitchen cooking dinner for the family while Zain and his dad are outside of the house sitting on a bench that can hold two people in silence. Xander finally broke the silence, "you got into a fight didn't you Zain." Xander asks as he scans Zain up and down and can see that Zain has got some bruises from his arms to his legs. Zain could only nod in reply as he was too ashamed to face his father. "So who was it… the person you got into a fight with?" Xander again asks his son.

"It was a guy called Jura." Zain quietly replied.

"Ahhh, Jura Neekis. I'm pretty sure he is the kid that uses earth magic, some people in the village say that he is a generational talent in his age group but I have also heard that his personality isn't the best." Xander pondered and looked into the sky as he went through his mind about all he knew about a kid named Jura. "So why did you two get into a fight?" Xander later asks as he turns his head back to Zain.

"We bumped into each other and I dropped my wooden sword, he then stomped on the sword and it broke. So I used my magic to repair the sword." Zain explained as he turned his body backwards and pointed to the said sword that was visible through their house's window. "He then asked me what I just did and I told him it was my repair magic and he said to me that my magic was weak and pathetic and his magic was super strong. When I heard what he said, I got mad at him and we fought." Zain finished his explanation.

Xander soaked in what his son told him and thought about what he was going to say due to now knowing that it was his son who started the fight between him and Jura. "son," he said in a serious tone. "Getting mad is normal but you can't just fight someone just because you got mad."Xander scolded his son. Zain could only look down on the ground and gave his dad a quiet apology.

"Dad."

"Yes, son?"

"I want to be stronger, I don't ever want to hear other people saying that my magic is pathetic just because it has no offensive capabilities," Zain told his dad and his dad could only give him an empathetic look.

"You know what son, I used to be just like you when I was younger." Xander started and Zain turned his head to his dad with curiosity, "back in my days when I had just begun my work as a mage for the capital of Fiore, all the other mages mocked me because my magic was light magic. You can say that my magic had no offensive capabilities just like your magic as well Zain aye." he jokingly admitted to his son and Zain gave him a small chuckle.

"Anyways," Xander continued, "the only thing I could do with my light magic was basically make everything brighter and people mocked for that. So you know what I did?" Xander finished.

"What did you do dad?"

"Every single day after my guarding shift was over, I thought and thought about how I could use my light magic more creatively in combat so I could win against other mages and after many enduring years of suffering and hardship, I was able to become a decently ranked mage and a rather high paying job in Mercurius palace," Xander explained to his son.

"Wow, that's so cool dad!" Zain exclaimed as he had a big smile with red eyes gleaming brightly.

"I know right." His father replied and after that, the two shared a comfortable silence. Zain was still thinking about what his father had said about how he had thought about many ways to use his light magic in combat so he could win against other mages. So of course Zain couldn't help himself and asked his father. "What were some of the ways you defeated your opponents with your light magic dad?"

"Well, I had a couple of ways using my light magic to fight other magic users. For example, Let's say it is dark, right?" Xander began. "Within a radius of 50 meters, I am able to pinpoint a spot in the area and light the spot on with light magic. So when I'm battling someone in the dark, I'll light up a certain spot, be it behind them or at their sides to confuse them, making them think that was me and I'll swiftly find an opening and strike them down with my fist or something," he explained.

"Or I could concentrate my magic so I could tightly compact the Ethernano particles into my spell to produce a really bright light. So bright that they could blind my opponents momentarily and during that time, I could use my fist to beat them up or I can use the magic sealing cuffs that I owned to seal their magic so magic will be useless to them. Because I am knowledgeable and experienced in melee combat, taking mages on who only relies on their magic was fairly easy." Xander finished and you can see the amazement in Zain's eyes as he listened to his father's ways of using his magic.

Zain turned his head to the ground and pondered for a moment before asking his dad, "dad… Do you think I could be strong just like you with my repair magic?" Xander could only smile at his son's question. He smiled because he rarely ever saw his son's vulnerability when it comes to his son's repair magic. Just looking at him makes him think about his younger self when he gets looked down due to his light magic.

"Willingly wanting to help his son, Zain started thinking about ways to help Zain become stronger. At first, he thought about teaching Zain new offensive type magic like fire magic or lightning magic but decided it was going to be useless because the spell power will be drastically lower compared to other offensive magic-user mages, even though his magic container has more magic than the majority of mages. He thought about Zain's repair magic, the only thing it could do was to repair. So is there any magic that can complement Zain's repair magic he thought and his mind finally click.

"I couldn't believe that I haven't thought about this yet!" Xander excitedly exclaimed and scaring Zain the heck out of him at the same time. "Zain, daddy just figure out what kind of magic you can use to help you become stronger." Xander excitedly continued.

"What is it?" Zain curiously asked.

"Requip magic." Xander stated, "it is a magic I learned when I was younger, It was really useful even though my compatibility with it wasn't that great." Xander finished as he pointed at himself with his thumb.

"What is Requip magic dad?" Zain asked and just before Xander was about to explain to Zain what Requip magic is, Crystal opened up the window that was behind them where they were sitting on the bench and yelled out "dinner is ready you two, it's going to get cold if you don't come and eat soon!" The father and son duo stood up from the bench and headed back inside of the house to eat dinner.

The next day

It is now the next day late morning and the father and son duo are currently outside in their backyard. After hearing about Requip magic from his dad and how it could help him become stronger, he decided that he wanted to learn Requip magic and his father happily agreed to his request. It has been about 30 minutes since they started the lesson and so far, Xander has taught Zain what was Requip magic.

Zain learned that Requip magic allows the users to store items in a pocket dimension so they can easily summon them at any time, even during battle. This gives the users a high level of flexibility in combat. However, there is a limit to how much the pocket dimension can store. Requip can be used for simple or combat-related purposes. His father in his younger days used it for storage such as food, clothing or weapons. Whereas some users used Requip magic to store different weapons for battle.

Xander also told him that some people can use Requip magic to Requip armour during a battle but he has never seen anyone be able to do that before. He learned that there are different styles of Requip magic, one of them being the knight style and the other being the gunner style. The knight style is able to store armour and weapons and the gunner style is able to store magic guns. But both styles can be used for storage with no problem.

He learned that most requip users stick to Requip magic they awaken with and never really try to use the other style due to the fact that it would be slower to requip by using the other styles and that about it really. Must be a pride thing or something his father told him. Zain also learned that every requip user can project a holographic inventory screen where users can view and organise items in the pocket dimension.

"Listen here son, I have 15 slots in my pocket dimension due to my incompatibility even though I have been trying to increase the amount for so long now," Xander said and Zain replied with a nod. "Ok, let's get started by trying to get your first slot in your pocket dimension then," Xander exclaimed and Zain replied with a yes and a fist bump into the air.

A few hours have passed and after lunch and a couple of breaks, Zain has finally got his first slot in his pocket dimension. Zain was ecstatic to get his first slot and he quickly ran inside the house and grabbed his wooden sword to test it out. He opened up a holographic inventory screen and added his wooden sword into the pocket dimension. To his expectation, his wooden sword was now inside his pocket dimension. He then rushed over to his dad, who had decided to take a nap on the couch after letting Zain try to get his first slot all by himself, and woke him up not pleasantly.

"Dad! Dad! Wake up!" he yelled as he grabbed Xander's shoulders and shook him so he could wake up, "I finally got my first slot, look." Zain continued as he cast his Requip magic and pulled out his wooden sword from his pocket dimension.

"Whoa, son." Xander woke up and said, "good job at managing to get your first slot Zain." He continued and Zain gave him a happy thank you.

"Now remember son, being able to use Requip magic doesn't make you strong. It is about how you used your Requip magic along with your repair magic so you will have to use this." Xander said as he slid up from his lying position so he could sit up on the couch as he pointed his finger to his head.

"To be creative and think of ways to defeat my opponents."

"Exactly, you are a Durand after all. One who endures."

A week later

Two boys are standing on a field facing each other from about 20 meters apart. One is 11 years old and the other is 6 years old. Those two were Jura Neekis and Zain Durand and it seems like they are going to fight again for the first time since a week ago. Jura, still being your typical bully boy, had a cocky grin on his face whereas Zain had a serious expression as he stared at Jura.

"Yo white shit, do you want me to beat you up again like last?" Jura mocks Zain with an overconfident tone in his voice and Zain says nothing in reply and continues to stare at Jura. "Tch, what a boring sight. Don't come and beg me to stop later." Jura exclaimed and started to control the earth, form rocks with his earth magic, and launch it at Zain.

Just like the last fight between the two. Zain starts dodging the rocks and Jura continues to launch rocks at him and every now and then, Zain would try to charge at Jura so he could swing at him and every time, Jura would block the sword with his rock wall and break Zain sword along with it. Holding the handle of the sword, his swords get repaired once broken and he will try again.

No matter how many times Zain tries, Jura would always block him with a rock wall and break his sword and no matter how many times Zain's sword gets broken. It would always get repaired by his repair magic. After a few minutes of this scenario, Jura has finally had enough of this going on and when Zain once again tries to swing at him. Instead of blocking him with his wall, he formed a rock pillar underneath Zain and shot the pillar upwards towards his hand that was holding the sword. Hence the sword had flown away from Zain's hand.

"Hey white shit," Jura began. "You know there's one thing I notice about you and how you use your magic," Jura said in a mocking tone. "You can't repair your sword if you are not touching it." Jura continued as he remembered how Zain dropped his sword last week in their little fight, he had to pick it up so he could repair the sword. Zain only coolly stared back at him in reply.

"You see how superior my earth magic is compared to your repair magic now."Jura cockily said, "if you can't even repair your weapon without touching it, you might as well be a repairman and not a mage on the battlefield." Jura continued to mock Zain and started to laugh out loud to the point he doubled over in laughter. A bonk could be heard and Jura was now on the ground due to being hit in the head by Zain's sword.

While Jura was doubled over in laughter, Zain had seen his chance to surprise Jura with his newly learned Requip magic and summoned his wooden sword from his pocket dimension. Zain had purposely not used his Requip magic until now so he could catch Jura off guard and it worked.

Jura was now on the ground clutching his hands over his head in pain. Because even though Zain was 6 years old, he still did daily training with his dad so his strength is much higher compared to other kids his age.

"How did you repair your sword? I thought you couldn't repair your sword if you're not touching it." Jura asked in pain to Zain as he stood over Jura staring him down.

"Requip magic." Zain simply said and showed off his Requip magic by storing his sword in the pocket dimension and getting it back. Zain started to raise his sword and was about to strike Jura down again with his sword until Jura interrupted him.

"Stop! Don't hit me. I'm sorry that I made fun of your Magic." Jura said as he put his hands together and pleaded. "Your repair magic… I guess it can be useful sometimes." Jura reluctantly admitted to Zain. Hearing that, Zain was pleased with himself. He fought against Jura again because he wanted Jura to acknowledge that his magic wasn't weak and that it could be useful and powerful in some situations. Just like what happened before, Jura was too concentrated on Zain's repair magic, his mind didn't even come across the fact that Zain could use other magic.

Zain held his hand in front of Jura so he could pull him up off the ground. Jura accepted the hand and hastily pulled himself up and dusted himself off. It was on this day, a rocky rivalry formed between Jura Neekis and Zain Durand.

finished

I don't recall seeing Jura having a backstory so I figure I give him one.

for magic usage, every mage can use different types of magic. I just put in a little twist with the 1/10 thing to explain why mage never really use other magic.

thanks for reading.
