In the kingdom of Fiore, on the southern coast of the country is Magnolia Town. Magnolia Town was known for many things and one of them is the Guild that is resided in this Town, Fairy Tail. With the guild founded 85 years ago, it was now currently one of the strongest guilds in the Kingdom of Fiore.
Currently standing right outside of the guild building belonging to Fairy Tail, was a muscular man with orange hair and a kid with white hair. Those two were Gildarts and Zain who had just arrived at Fairy Tail. after about a weeks worth of walk from Zain's old village, the two had finally arrived at their destination.
The Fairy Tail building in front of them was a large, three-story high building with each floor being smaller than the one below it while it sat on the latter's roof. The roofs were very long with arched tiles lined up one after the other, extending out upwards on the building's angles.
On the top of the building was a flag of the Fairy tail's symbol indicating that this guild was Fairy Tail and a huge banner of the symbol as well on the third floor.
Expecting that both of them were going to enter inside the building by using the huge hall door. Zain's shocked facial expression appeared on his face as Gildarts couldn't even bother to head for the door and just break through the walls of the building with his magic in order to enter the guild.
Gildarts had told him that he had a tendency to break through walls instead of simply using a door but he didn't know that it was this bad. Zain turned his and looked around the streets of Magnolia to see that the Cillvians aren't even surprised by Gildart's action. Accepting that thinking too much wouldn't do much for him, he followed Gildarts through the broken wall and enter the guild.
When Zain went inside, he looked around and observed the interior of the building. From what he had gathered, he could see that the first floor was similar to a large lunch hall with several long benched and tables stretched across the building. There was a bar at the end with a board that had papers pinned on it beside the bar. This floor reminded him about the Oracion Seis floor but was more warm and cozy.
He also noted that there was a second floor and there were no people on it whereas the first floor had many people drinking and chatting away. He could also see a board on the second floor which also has pinned papers on it but not as much as the board on the first floor. When he looked down again, he saw a sign on a stair that said "Fairy Tail Basement" and assumed that there was also a basement as well.
"Yo Zain," Gildarts called out as he waved his hand. Zain's deep thought about the guild's interior was interrupted by Gildarts and he turned his head to him. "Whatcha looking around for? Follow me." Gildarts continued as he gestured his hand to Zain to follow him and Zain complied and followed him. The two of them walked past the long tables that had many people drinking and arrived at the bar.
On the bar counter, Zain noticed an extremely short, elderly man who was drinking alcohol to his heart's content. He has black eyes and was growing bald with only the outer rims of his head containing any white hair he has left. He also has a thick white moustache. He was wearing an orange hoodie with matching orange pants and a weird striped jester hat consisting of the colours of orange and blue.
The old man kept on drinking his alcohol until Gildarts finally interrupted him. "Yo Master, I'm back from my mission," he said and the man stopped drinking and face Gildarts he then moved his head to the side so he could see behind him. At first, there was a happy facial expression but then it turned to an annoying expression "Gildarts… how many times do I have to tell you to use the bloody door." The old man scolded and paused to catch his breath, "and how many times do I have to tell you to be careful with your magic outside! Look at all these paperwork the council sent me because of you." he continued, showing his frustration as he somehow grabbed a huge pile of papers out of nowhere and took another gulp of his alcohol.
"Since when did you ever care about what the magic council says?" Gildarts questioned and sat down on a stool which was next to the bar counter about 30 cm, "I'll have what master is having." he then requested and the bartender gave him the alcohol that the old man was drinking. "Thanks" he thanked the bartender and started to drink as well.
"Yeah, screw the council." the old man exclaimed and with his hand that was holding the paperwork, that hand was engulfed in flames and it proceeds to burn the paper into ashes real fast. "One cannot progress in the way of magic by being mindful of the watchful eye of the council," he stated and continued his drink. He then turned his eyes to the corner and saw Zain standing there by himself, minding his own business.
"Gildarts, Who's the kid?" the old man asked as he turned his head back to Gildarts who was drinking and chatting with the other guild members. Gildarts turned his head back due to the old man interrupting him and replied "oh, I found this kid during my mission, he had nowhere to go so I suggested that he could join Fairy Tail.
"Is that so?" the old man said out loud and began to ponder for a while and after a few moments of the old man thinking, the old man jumped off the bar counter and looked up at Zain who was taller than him even though Zain was nine years old. "Come with me." the old man said and walked off away from the bar area and Zain just followed the old man.
Zain had followed the old man to a room that seemed like an office and entered inside where the old man was waiting for him. From the inside, Zain could see that the office was simple, there wasn't much except for a table drawer at one of the corners and a dest in the middle with mountains of papers stacked on top of each other. Zain could only assume that most of these papers were caused by Gildarts.
The old man went to sit on his chair behind the desk as he swept away the stack of papers aside so he could see the front while Zain went to sit on the chair that was in front of the desk. "So," the old man began, "My name is Makarov Dreyar and I'm the third guild master of Fairy Tail," the now-named Makarov finished as he introduce himself.
"Zain Durand," Zain said in awestruck as he had heard the name of Makarov Dreyar before. His father had told him that when he was struggling to arrest some dark mages back in Crocus, one of the ten wizard saints that were at Crocus decided to help him to detain the dark mages and said that he was the most powerful mage he had ever seen, and that man's name was Makarov Dreyar.
His father told him that Makarov was a giant but standing right in front of him was a little old man. So Zain could hardly believe that the man in front of him was the man his father praised as the strongest mage he has ever seen. "Sorry mister wizard saint," Zain began, "my dad used to talk about you back home before," Zain finished and Makarov just chuckled lightly and replied, "that's fine Zain and people just call me Makarov or master if they are in the guild."
Makarov observed Zain and could see that he was extremely underweight for his age and his hair was long and dirty. Makarov could also see that Zain had been through some tough times just by looking at his red eyes, so he asked, "just by looking at your eyes, I could see that you have been through a lot… mind sharing it to me?"
Zain was hesitant at first but complied at the end because he thought that he could trust Makarov with what happened to him. He first told him about how his life was peaceful with his family, then to Oracion Seis attacking their village, then escaping their base and how he killed someone with his magic before finally meeting Gildarts.
"I see…" Makarov paused and stared at Zain deeply thus making Zain a bit uncomfortable, "there's still something you want to say?" Makarov assumed, with decades worth of experience, he could see through other people through facial expressions or eye contact. "Well, Makarov…" Zain began looking a bit nervous, "my parents used to tell me that seeking revenge isn't good but I can't help but want to get stronger and seek revenge on Brain for what he has done to my family and village… what do you think?" Zain meekly asked.
Makarov could only look at Zain with empathy in his eyes and decided to give him the best advice that he could give Zain right now. "Want revenge is a good starting point to motivate yourself to be stronger… but you can't have revenge as your end goal if you let it be your end goal, nothing would change and you'll be empty inside," Makarov explained.
Zain was confused at what Makarov had told him and didn't understand most of the things he said but he still asked "then what should my end goal be?" Makarov only stayed silent as he look down and open a drawer that was underneath his desk. Inside was a magic stamp tool and Makarov grabbed the tool out "join Fairy Tail and you will know." he then remarked and Zain was taken aback.
"But I killed a person, isn't killing prohibited in a legal guild?" Zain exclaimed not expecting that the master of Fairy Tail would let him join the guild so easily. He thought that killing someone will give him a bad reputation and nobody would want him. "Blah!" Makarov voices out loud interrupting Zain's thought process, "Gildarts and I killed dark mages before and we're still here so you will be fine Zain." Makarov informed Zain, "and everyone in Fairy Tail carries a wound of a sad past, so you fit right along with the others." Makarov then comforted him.
Not having any reason to not join Fairy Tail anymore and the fact that the master of the guild is happily willing to accept him as a member of the guild, he figures that he would join. "So what do I need to do?" Zain asked not knowing if there is a requirement to join Fairy Tail.
"Just need to stamp this guild mark on you to be recognised as a member." Makarov casually replied as he point at the magic stamp tool he was holding.
"Is that it?" Zain questioned, feeling a bit sceptical at how easy it is to be a member.
"Yep, so what colour at where do you want it?" Makarov confirmed first before asking where Zain wants the Fairy Tail symbol on his body. Zain at first didn't know where he wanted the guild mark on his body. So he thought of some sentimental things that could help him and hence he thought about his late parents. All of a sudden he got an idea where he wants the guild mark.
"Can I have it on my heart and the colour white please?" Zain politely requested as he point his finger slightly to the left side of his malnourished chest.
"You sure can," Makarov exclaimed and proceed to change the colour of the guild mark to white and stamped it on Zain's chest. Once Makarov finished, he then queried "any stories behind the colour white and the placement?" Makarov asked genuinely interested in Zain's particular choice.
Zain had an emotional facial expression and was feeling nostalgic as well, "both of my dead parents have white hair and even if they're gone now, they will forever be in here" Zain replied as he palmed his hand on his heart.
"Your parents would be proud of you after what you had been through," Makarov said as he pats Zain's back gently.
"Yeah, they would." Zain quietly agreed.
"Anyways, welcome to Fairy Tail, it is a pleasure to have you in Fairy Tail." Makarov warmly said while secretly in his head was celebrating that the destructive nature of Gildarts could be slightly tamed now.
"It is a pleasure to join Fairy Tail as well Makarov, no, Master."
A month has passed since Zain had joined Fairy Tail and nothing much has happened. At the beginning of the week, Zain was temporarily sleeping in one of the guest rooms in the guild until Zain could find a place to live. Once Zain had officially joined Fairy Tail, he was now much healthier, he wasn't starving skinny anymore and his hair was back to his medium length. He also wore new clothes as well, a long-sleeved black shirt, grey pants and a pair of brown boots. In a month, Zain had been grinding rank D missions that were pinned on the request board to quickly earn Jewels so he could afford a place to live in.
Ranked D missions are the easiest missions of all missions available in a legal guild, the jewel reward is lacking and the missions usually require physical labour and consist of mundane jobs such as finding lost items of little value, lost animals and etc. The missions that Zain had got for himself were all building-related, such as helping with rebuilding buildings or delivering repair materials to other people.
Thanks to Zain's unique magic, all these jobs were a piece of cake for him and Zain has quickly become a favourite amongst the people of Magnolia town. The ranked D missions each had a reward of about 1000 jewels and Zain had completed on an average around 3 missions each day. Adding the food expense and new clothes, Zain has about 50000 jewels on him right now. Thinking that his staying at the guild's guest room was a bother for Makarov and the rest of the guild, he decided to find himself a place to stay in.
He had to ask Makarov for help in finding a place to stay in and Makarov happily accepted his request and this leads to right now where Zain and Makarov were currently standing in front of a broken-down cottage which was located next to a river in a small forest area that was only a couple hundred meters from the guild building.
The broken-down cottage was all sort of things. The roof was half broken, some section of the wall was gone, cracked windows and overall just destroyed. Standing next to Zain and Makarov was a real estate agent who was wearing a blue suit.
"I'm so glad that you find a liking to this property Fairy Tail's guild master." the real estate agent exclaimed with relief, "this building was destroyed due to the big storm we had about two weeks ago and since then, nobody would want it." he then continued.
"It not for, it for him," Makarov said and pointed at Zain who was beside him.
"Is that so?" the real estate agent questioned and looked down on Zain.
"Yep," Zain confirmed.
"Anyways," Makarov then began, "I was wondering why you guys don't rebuild the cottage and sell it later on?" Makarov curiously asked and the real estate agent had a little bead of sweat on his forehead.
"Um well you see… " the man paused, hesitating to finish his sentence, "it a bit embarrassing but we decided to not do that because we couldn't be bothered because the profit was close to nothing," the real estate agent finished.
"I see," Makarov mumbled and then turned his head down to Zain and Zain vice versa, "you told me about your magic, it has been about two weeks, think you can do it?" Makarov asked.
"My magic has increased a lot during the two years so I think I should be fine Master," Zain replied.
"If you say so," Makarov said and Zain stepped up and walk right in front of the broken cottage, only leaving within the touching distance between the cottage and Zain. The real estate agent was really confused at what Zain was doing and was about to call out to him to find out what he was doing. Just before he could speak, Makarov tugged on his suit and put his index right in front of his mouth to tell him to be quiet.
Not knowing what was going on anymore, the real estate agent complied and turned his head back to Zain who now had his hand on the building. All of a sudden, the real estate agent's eyes was popping out due to the shock he had when he starts to see the little cottage was repairing itself. All the destroyed pieces of the cottage were piecing back together, the cracks on the window were gone and the cottage now looked good as new.
Once Zain had finished with the repairing he let go of the building and stepped back next to Makarov so he could see the repaired cottage as a whole. He can feel that his magic was drained but nevertheless he felt fine, so Zain estimated that he still had around half of his magic left.
"You feel okay?" Makarov asked with concern in his voice, wondering if the magic he just used was too draining for him or not.
"Yeah, I'm fine. I still have around half of my magic left," Zain reassured Makarov and Makarov simply said, "I'll take your word for it." a silent pause had taken over the two before the real estate agent spoke up with a flabbergasted tone of voice. "You're that kid that can use some sort of repair magic that everybody in town was talking about!"
Around thirty minutes had passed and Makarov was now walking back from Zain's house that he had newly bought for. After repairing the small cottage, the real estate agent allowed Zain to buy the house for the same price when the cottage was destroyed. Hence Zain only paid 4000 jewels which leaves him 10000 jewels left for furniture and other stuff.
While walking back to the guild building, he heard a voice calling out to him and turned around to see Gildarts had returned from his S-Class mission. So Makarov waited for Gildarts to catch up to him and once Gildarts had caught up, they continued to walk back to the guild building.
"So how did the mission go?" Makarov asked but there wasn't any worried or concerned tone in his voice because he knew that Gildarts probably aced the mission without any trouble whatsoever.
"Everything went well Master," Gildarts carefreely replied and showed Makarov the request paper which had a red mission completed stamp imprinted on it.
"Good job." Makarov praised and the two continued to walk. They went past several shops and apartments once they were close to the guild building, GIldarts spoke up and interrupted the silence they had and the two stopped walking. "So master, how's the kid doing?"
Makarov turned his head up to Gildarts and said, "His magic power… it is a lot higher than Laxus but if we are talking battle wise, it is going to be a struggle for him." Makarov finished.
"Yeah you have a point master but I have the utmost faith in the new generation of Fairy Tail and one day, Zain would be the toughest mage in Fairy Tail." GIldarts voice out loud.
"Why do you say that?" Makarov questioned not because he doesn't believe in GIldarts and Zain's potential but because he was genuinely curious at what Gildarts thinks about Zain.
"He knows his weakness and it is going to help him," Gildarts explained.
"Indeed it will," Makarov replied, exactly knowing what Gildarts's sentence meant. A long pause entered the conversation between the two and just before the two started to walk back to the guild building again, Gildarts spoke up again.
"Master, now that you mentioned Laxus. Your son Ivan, has been doing some shady stuff."
"I know…" Makarov paused, "I am just keeping watch for now." Makarov finished.
"If you say so." Gildarts carefreely replied and began to head back to the guild building but before he could, Makarov interrupted him.
"Gildarts…" Makarov said and Gildarts turned his head to Makarov. Makarov then turned his body around to the point they were now facing backwards and Gildarts followed suit and the two could see that buildings were destroyed. "We need to install a Gildarts shift or something in the city. Poor Zain can't always repair your oblivious tendency."
