Asuna the Coward
[Summer 117 AG]
"Read it out loud!"
"Again?"
"Oh, c'mon, Asuna! This is big news for you! Excuse us for being a bit excited."
"I'll read it again!"
"Yes!"
"Fine, if you must."
Lonou sits up straight and pulls the newspaper closer to his face. His eyes squint as he reads the paper delivered all the way from Republic City.
FIRE LORD ZUKO MAKES IMPERIAL DECREE: SAME-SEX MARRIAGE LEGAL AGAIN
Provinces and villages cannot keep same-sex couples from marrying and must recognize their unions, Fire Lord Zuko says in an imperial decree that for months has been the focus of speculation.
Zuko, seen by many as a complicated, but ultimately progressive figure already for his leadership in the building of Republic City, shared the decree before a gathered audience of supporters, as well as protesters, at the Palace Courtyard in Caldera City. A number of Fire Sages penned dissenting opinions to be shared with local Fire Nation press.
"They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law," Zuko said of same-sex couples in the Fire Nation and the world over. "We are granting them that right."
The decree overturns a centuries old decision by Zuko's ancestor, Fire Lord Sozin. The Republic Times' experts are of the belief that same-sex marriages performed using Fire Nation formalities will be recognized even in the Earth Kingdom, which now remains the last of the three nations to not recognize such unions.
Lonou stops reading and pauses. He sniffles before closing his eyes and pinching his nose. He looks up and across the room at Asuna with a smile. She shakes her head.
"Would you stop crying, you big oaf?" She chides him. "This doesn't even affect you."
"Yes it does!" Roland protests
"Bullshit!" Lonou yells. "This impacts you, and because of that it impacts us. All of us here in Lanxi!"
Looking away, Asuna huffs, "Hardly."
"Alright, alright," Roland laughs. "Well, tell us one last time the plan for tomorrow."
Asuna cradles the one-and-a-half year old Yasuko in her arms. She looks down into her emerald eyes and smiles wide. She looks back at the older men waiting for her.
"When Ty Lin arrives, I'm going to have prepared her favorite seafood dish, Se tu. There will be every single moonflower I could possibly grow. My house will be filled with candles, which I will extinguish all at once, thus making the moon flowers the only source of light. We'll go into my place right away, where there will be the food and the flowers and the candles and I'll ask her the question after she eats."
"My coin is on you not being able to eat first. Seems like the only flaw. You'll be too much in your own head." Roland jokes.
"What do you still have left to do?" Lonou asks.
"Set up the moonflowers all around my house, pick up the Se tu when Lin's boat arrives in the early afternoon, and get the candles from Shoyon's shop."
"So nice of her to not charge you for all of them."
"Least she could do after Asuna stopped that fire that would've burned down all of them anyway!"
"Anything you doing tomorrow to keep the nerves down?"
"After I pick up the fish, I'm playing pai sho with Po Boh. After that, middle of the afternoon, I'll pick up the candles from Shoyon's shop and that'll be everything."
"Lovely!"
"Don't worry about the townsfolk, Asuna. We'll take care of any emergencies that crop up."
"You know it's gonna be one of the hottest days of the year tomorrow?"
"And how would you know that?" Asuna asks, disbelieving.
"The spirits told Shalang! They're never wrong about the weather!"
"Except when they are." Asuna replies with a roll of her eyes.
The group laughs. After a moment Lonou asks her, "So, are you nervous?"
"No." Asuna lies.
"It's okay to be nervous," Lonou says, seeing right through her lies. "It just means your heart is in it."
Asuna is in such a rush, running downhill, that she never sees it coming. A rather finely rounded rock, almost ball-like, sticking out amongst the rock and soil. It's too late when her heel crashes into it and her ankle twists in unnatural directions. Before she realizes it, she is falling down to the dirt path below.
"Ah! Fuck!"
She hits the ground and rolls for a couple of seconds. She clutches her foot and groans in pain and frustration. She closes her eyes and lets out a long, low growl. After another minute or so, she gingerly attempts to get up. Hand resting against a wooden railing, she shifts all of her weight to her left foot and keeps her right foot slightly elevated off the ground. She curses the ground for being beneath her and betraying her at this crucial moment. She hobbles her way down the hill.
Asuna had gotten distracted at home throughout the morning trying to perfect the arrangement of moonflowers. When she finally realized the time, she rushed out to go meet Lin at the docks. This twisted ankle of hers wouldn't be so bad if she had a certain healer who could tend to her. Alas, she had cut him out of her personal and professional life about a year and a half ago. She has recently begun to doubt this decision. After all, Haroq had not killed Alane. He'd done his best to save her.
But someone had to suffer the consequences of Asuna's rage. She could not be satiated by blaming it on life or miserable luck or the strings of fate. So instead, she directed it squarely at the only person in all of Lanxi who could help her with a bum ankle.
She finally limps up to the dock and finds no Lin, no boat, no one. She presumes that he must be behind schedule and will be arriving momentarily. She takes a seat and waits for one of her oldest friends to arrive with good tidings.
Over two hours later, a boat finally docks at the Lanxi port. Asuna, nursing her sore, twisted ankle, hobbles over towards them. She is perturbed to see no Lin and begins to worry that something has gone wrong. Just as she does though, a young man approaches.
"Where's Lin?" She fires at him.
"He sends his sincere regards," the young Fire Nation looking man replies. He has a handlebar mustache that drapes down below his chin, and a long, narrow face. He's medium height, slightly taller than Asuna. He continues, "He really wanted to be here but Ai Zhou became ill the night before we embarked. Nothing too serious, but he couldn't justify the trip with no one else to take care of her."
"Uhh," Asuna groans. Her palm comes up to her face. The boat's crew is set to work in the background as the two converse. "Okay, fine. Did you bring the Se tu?"
"No ma'am. None to be had unfortunately." He says offhandedly as he reviews some shipment logs.
Instantly hostile and surprised, Asuna cuts, "Excuse me?"
Without returning her emotion or even looking at her he recites, "Think we'll have better luck next time out."
"Do you know who I am?"
Finally stopping what he's doing, the man looks at her. He looks her up and down for a moment. She appears to be a little dirtied, but no worse for wear. Her right foot is slightly elevated off the ground. She has black hair and golden eyes, hair draped down her shoulders. A vicious look in her eyes. She looked entirely forgettable.
"Should I?"
"I'm," she starts. Staring at this young man she begins to lose her momentum. "I'm, I'm…"
He waits. His arms move outward in a notion of imploring her to continue. After another second he offers, "You're?"
In a less determined voice, she says, "One of Lin's oldest friends."
He chuckles slightly. "I've got a story for you, 'one of Lin's oldest friends.'"
The crew keeps moving around them, taking parcels off boat, unloading and loading. The handlebar mustache man straightens up and faces Asuna.
"My father was a captain in the Fire Nation Navy when I was just a lad. Fought in the 100 Years' War. He was an honorable son of a bitch, and he got me my sealegs. He always tells me this quote that I'm gonna share with you that someone said to him once: 'Do I control this ship or do the tides?'"
Asuna is having an out of body experience. She stares dumbfoundead at the man as her life echoes through time. Her face becomes flat as she weakly replies, "You do."
"Exactly!" He exclaims. He crosses his arms with a smile and closes his eyes. "I control this ship. So how about you worry about what I tell you I get from our expeditions and less about what you think we should get from it?"
Asuna, frustrated, rolls her eyes and turns to leave. As she hobbles away she grumbles to herself. "That idiot didn't even teach his son the quote correctly."
Asuna heads back up the path to return to the village so she can find a replacement meal. Back at the dock, having been rid of the pesky friend of Lin's, the ship's captain turns to one of his crew. "Alright, someone go find whatsherface to place the order for Chameleon Bay."
Turning back towards the gimpy woman he couldn't help but laugh. The poor lady thought she would pressure or bully him into giving something he didn't have for her. He wonders how anyone like that can get by in life.
Asuna is trying to make her way through the central village. Just as she passes a large, ornate home a voice calls to her. Stepping out of the house is a round man with a smug expression.
"Ahhh! Asuna! My arch nemesis. Come to do battle?"
"Hmm?" She asks. She stops for a moment and turns to look at him. She replies, "Oh hey, Po Boh. No, not yet, sorry. I have to find a new meal to serve at dinner tonight."
"Nonsense! It is high time we continued our legendary battles at the pai sho table."
"Later, once I get everything figured out," she begins walking away
Po Boh declares, "Coward."
She stops in her tracks.
"Walk away now and I shall forever dub you 'Asuna the Coward.'"
There's murderous intent in her eyes. Asuna steps towards him.
"I'll kill you."
"A coward could never kill anyone."
"Killers are often killers because they're cowards."
"I'm confused then: are you or are you not a coward?"
"No one has ever called me a coward and lived to tell the tale."
"Then you better sit down and prove me wrong, Asuna the Coward."
Asuna knows better. She has things to do. She has a plan. She sits down anyway.
Asuna pulls her hair into a ponytail while staring at the table. A mixture of the heat and stress of the match had resulted in it going crazy and annoying her. She is deep in thought on her next move. The match had lasted by far their longest ever, nearly two hours. Po Boh had been practicing, but so has she.
In the distance a voice calls to her, "Asuna!"
She begins reaching for a piece, hoping this will finally trigger her endgame plan and trap Po Boh beyond reproach.
"ASUNA!"
She looks up from the table at the messenger boy running up to her. He comes to a stop, gasping for air and says, "We need you at the bridge, right now!"
Anxiety skyrocketing, she asks, "What is it? Is Ty Lin here? She's so early!"
"No! It's Tava!
"Oh?"
"Oh?" Po Boh also asks.
"What did she do now?"
"She's going to jump!"
"No she's not." Asuna says and turns away instantly.
"She is! She swears it!"
"She says that every time, and every time she steps back," Asuna replies while looking for the piece she was going to move. "Roland and Lonou are supposed to be handling that sort of thing today. And I'm supposed to not be at this table!"
Pressed, the boy tells her, "She said she'll only talk to you, Asuna!"
Rolling her eyes and looking to the sky, she mumbles, "Agni above, strike me down."
Po Boh laughs. "Go on, go on. Take care of that. I shall wait to finish our match."
Pushing her seat back, Asuna stands and departs. He shouts after her, "But if you don't return, I will tell all of Lanxi you are to be referred to as Asuna the Coward!"
"Yeah, yeah, I'll be back." Asuna replies without looking.
Asuna weaves through a small crowd gathered by the gorge and bridge. When she reaches the front finally, she meets with Roland and a somber Lonou. When Roland finally sees her the first thing she does is mock his voice and say, "'Don't worry about the townsfolk, Asuna! We'll take care of everything!'"
He frowns and shakes his head.
"That was you," she points out. "You said that. Last night. You dumb idiots."
Lonou grimaces. "We're sorry, Asuna. She won't listen to anything we say and she won't come off the ledge."
She rolls her eyes and moves past them, muttering, "Watch out, watch out."
She goes to the end of the bridge. Halfway down, the elderly, dark skinned woman stands on the outside ledge and grips the railing. Asuna yells out to her, "Tava, let's go. Enough of this."
She screams back, "No! Asuna! This time I'm serious. Today's the day!"
'If that was true she would've jumped by now. She wouldn't have waited for me to arrive and then jumped.'
"No it's not, Tava," Asuna insists. "No one is dying on my watch. Not today anyway. Maybe tomorrow."
"I can't go another day without him, Asuna. Not one more single day!"
Asuna raises her hands up above her head and takes a step out onto the bridge. "Alright, well let's talk about this."
"No! No more! I'm done!"
"I'm coming out, okay. I'm coming to talk."
"I'll jump!"
"I know you will." Asuna assures her.
Asuna grips the railing halfway between the end of the bridge and Tava. She hoists herself up over it. Careful not to aggravate her twisted ankle, she is more mindful of her landing and not enough about her launch. A piece of her shirt catches on the railing on the inner part of the bridge, and as she pulls herself over it the shirt rips widely in the back.
"Be careful!" Lonou calls to her.
"I've got it, L," she tells the tan man with dark black hair who hasn't shaved his beard in years. "Don't worry. Just keep the crowd back."
He gives her an affirmative nod. He and the amber eyed, flowing haired Roland turn to crowd control. Asuna faces forward, hands gripping the railing. It's several hundred feet to a watery grave below. She slowly slides her way along the side and moves towards the small woman with jet black hair and light green eyes.
As she arrives she tells her, "You know, it's a much better view from the hilltop in town. Safer too, if you can believe that."
"I can't keep living like this, Asuna."
"Why's that? What's different about today?"
"It's been nearly ten years, Asuna! I miss him so much."
"Mahung was his name, yes?"
"Yes, Mahung. He was the light of my life, Asuna."
"Tell me about him." Asuna recalls a certain Fire Lady prompting her similarly to talk about someone who had passed.
"He was so strong, but caring. He made me laugh and could start a conversation with anyone. He had such an eye for potential in young people, I just know he would've taken to you even before I or anyone else in Lanxi did!"
"Oh I don't know, Tava," Asuna shrugs. "I think you took to me pretty quickly. And I'm not that young."
"That's true. That I took to you quickly. You're still young. But the best thing about him was he loved me."
"Certainly."
"And we would fight, but we'd always forgive each other."
"That's real love for you."
"And now it hurts every day. Every day is painful without him."
"I can only imagine the pain your heart has endured."
"We ended in a disagreement."
"Oh?"
"I broke a promise to him and then later that day he died. I killed him, Asuna!"
Wondering if this is taking a weird turn, Asuna asks, "You killed him?"
"He died of a broken heart!" She says, eyes watering. "He died and I killed him."
"Ah, I see." Asuna nods. "I think it probably had to do more with old age than anything else. Wasn't he in his 70s?"
"And now I'm in my 70s!"
"Oh come now, you're going to live forever, Tava."
"Not like you! Fire bender with that comet from a few years ago. How much does this extend your life again?"
"None of that is going to matter because I might die tonight."
"What's happening tonight?"
Asuna pauses a beat. She hasn't told anyone except for Lin, Lonou, and Roland. Zuko probably has figured it out, and by association Mai. Still, there aren't a lot of people who know and there's not a lot of time left anyway. She decides to go for it.
"Can you keep a secret?"
"I'll take it to my grave."
"I'm going to propose to Ty Lin tonight."
"Oh my goodness!" Tava shouts, eyes going wide.
"Yeah, if I make it there."
"Well why wouldn't you?"
"Today hasn't exactly gone to plan. I went down to get some Se tu, Ty's favorite meal, and there were none."
"Well that's just ridiculous!"
"My friend Lin was supposed to deliver it and something held him up. And yeah. It's just been a day."
"How much time do you have?"
Asuna looks at the sun's position in the sky and guesstimates. "Another hour or so."
"We better head back then! So you can get to planning the rest of your day!"
"Oh yeah? I thought you couldn't go one more day?"
"Well, now I can't die without knowing what the answer will be!"
Smiling, Asuna replies, "Me neither."
In one fluid motion, Asuna lofts herself up over the railing and onto the bridge. Carefully she assists Tava with doing the same. When the crowd at the bridge sees this they burst into cheers. Asuna hobbles her way back across the bridge into Lanxi, Tava holding on to her arm. The small woman asks Asuna, "What if I really jumped?"
Laughing, Asuna replies, "You forget that I can kind of fly. I would've just jumped after you."
"You're such a good person, Asuna."
It's an odd thing for Asuna to hear, even after all of this time. She's not sure she agrees. She doesn't see herself as such. Asuna thinks that she didn't used to be like this, but she won't start that conversation right now. For now she is focused on the next step of her journey. Getting Tava home and going to pick up her candles.
Asuna gingerly walks up to the doors of the shop. It's just about closing time when she pushes open the door. As she does she announces, "Sorry I'm so late-"
She stops herself when she realizes she's talking to no one. The shop is empty, devoid of any customers, candles, and owner.
"Shoyon?"
Azula enters, carefully looking around. Her mind flickers to possible harms done to the middle aged woman.
"Shoyon!"
She looks behind the register and sees just a handful of candles. The entire place was cleared out, as if it had been robbed. She mutters to herself, "What the Agni?"
The bells above the shop entrance ring. Asuna turns towards the door and sees the woman with flowing grey hair and almond eyes enter. She smiles wide at the fire bender. "Asuna! Oh my Agni! What a day!"
"Shoyon, where were you?" She asks, pivoting to face her. "And where are my candles?"
"You simply won't believe it!" Shoyon exclaims while charging through the shop. She goes in behind the front desk, towards the register. "These new fishermen came in a few hours ago with an order for Chameleon Bay. All of my candles, Asuna! All of them!"
"SHOYON." Asuna yells. She is furious but not hostile. She can't believe what she just heard and the implications it has on her plans.
"I know, I know you had requested my help, and I totally owed you one, and now I can owe you even more," she explains. She paces around the room. She doesn't want to look Asuna in the eye but she's also excited and wants to share with her friend. She continues, "But, this was more coin than I've ever seen, Asuna. I couldn't say no!"
Asuna sees how much this means to the candlemaker. She tries to put herself in the woman's shoes, but she also wants to melt her into a million candles to replace the inventory that was sold off. Beleaguered, she asks her, "Shoyon, what am I going to do?"
"I made a few extra with the time, so you can have these!"
Asuna looks down at the bag being offered to her. It's nothing of what she thought or expected. Part of her wants to rage and toss the bag aside and slap this vagrant. A different Asuna, perhaps a younger one, consumed by power and who saw people's lives as nothing more than pai sho pieces, would do so. But the Asuna today is too dejected to fight about it. She takes the bag.
"I'm really sorry, Asuna!" Shoyon says as the woman hobbles out.
"I know you are," she replies without looking back. She pushes open the door and the bells ring again. "See you tomorrow."
Asuna of Lanxi drags her feet across the center of town. Sweating profusely, with a tiny bag of candles, on one good foot, with her hair falling out of a makeshift pony, her shirt ripped all down the back, and with no plan whatsoever for dinner. She stands as a scarecrow waiting for her lover, who will arrive any minute now. She swims in the memories of the day and all of the things that went wrong. As if Agni themself knew what her plans were and laughed at them all the same. She is so lost in her own thoughts that she doesn't see the little girl brought up to her.
"Hello 'Suna," Lonoue says, while approaching, with Yasuko in his arms. "We thought we'd come wish you good luck."
Asuna looks down and smiles at the 18 month old in his arms. She doesn't want to hold her, but Lonou puts his arms out and leans into her. Before she can utter a word to resist, she is holding the child, who clings to her like an affectionate animal. She feels the weight and warmth of Yasuko in her chest, near her heart. A gust of wind blows at her back and she feels a shift of something. She's not sure what but something feels different.
Roland strolls up to her now. He smiles his classic open mouthed smile with a few missing teeth. His amber eyes bore into her as he says, "I'm so sorry about today, Asuna. I should've handled things-"
"It's not your fault, Roland," she tells him. Asuna bounces her knee and Yasuko giggles in her ear as she rumbles. Asuna forces a smile and tells him, "You're doing your best."
Roland explains how he is hosting a social for the elderly at sunset. A way to keep them occupied and wandering ears to a minimum, allowing Asuna and Ty Lin ample time to celebrate in private. He assures her that he won't fail again.
"You better not, Roland," she says while swiping some of Yasuko's black locks out of her face. "Or else I'll burn you to embers."
She raises her eyebrows at him. He takes a short breath and stands a little taller. After another second, she can't keep the charade up. She cracks into a weak smile, breaking the ice, and they both share a laugh. After that passes he promises her, "I won't disappoint you again."
"Damn right, or else it'll be the last time."
He accepts this charge from his Chairwoman for the Council of the Elders. He nods and then makes haste as he departs. However, as Roland is walking away, an old woman is walking up. She holds a bag up and approaches. Lonou greets her, "Tava! Feeling better after your sightseeing earlier?"
"Indeed!" She says smiling up at the former leader of Lanxi. She turns back to Asuna and offers the bag up to her. "I got you your Se tu."
Asuna blinks in surprise and her head shakes in disbelief. A sense of wonder in her voice she asks, "How?"
Triumphantly she explains, "I went down to the docks and gave that young lad a piece of my mind. I was ready to come to blows with him when he said another boat had come in after and had caught some. They traded for it, in case you came back."
"Thank you, Tava," Asuna says while sticking her free arm out. The old woman hangs it off of her forearm. Tava takes a step back and bows her head. "Thank you so much."
"The least I could do, dearie. You saved my life afterall. Again!"
Azula can't exactly explain it, but while holding the little dragon, she feels hope returning to her.
"Asuna," Lonou pulls her attention back. "Here she comes."
Azula looks back. Coming towards her the light of day is her Ty Lee. The brunette hair, fixed in it's classic braided ponytail. Grey eyes smiling, arms crossed over her chest. She walks up to them.
"Good luck, dearie!" Tava says, giving a squeeze of her free arm and then departing quickly.
Asuna looks back at Lonou. He is smiling at the sight of Ty Lin approaching. She clears her throat and he looks at her.
"Thank you for bringing Yasuko to me," she says. She leans forward so he can take her into his arms. The little dragon sinks it's claws into Azula and doesn't let go so easily. There are little scratch marks when she's finally pulled off of her. She looks into his gorgeous green eyes. Sincerely she tells him, "It made all the difference in the world."
Lonou blinks and smiles awkwardly. He nods his head in response. He feels proud in a way that he hasn't felt in years. He clears his own throat and replies, "You're welcome, Asuna. Happy to help. Good luck!"
Just as Ty Lee is within earshot, he also departs. She stands before the former Empress and forces a smile at her. If Azula wasn't so tired she'd swear the girl looked worse for wear. She'd have seen that something was eating at Ty Lee. She'd have known right away that something was the matter. Instead, she holds one bag with a Se tu and one bag with a handful of candles. She welcomes her.
"How was the journey here?"
"Too long, too much time to think," Ty Lee replies. "You look like you had a rough day."
Azula replies matter of fact my. "It was perfect, actually."
"Oh yeah?"
"It ended with you being here. Of course it was perfect."
Ty Lee blushes. She takes a sniff and then asks, "Is that fish in one of those bags?"
"Uhh, yes."
Ty Lee nods her head slowly. When Azula doesn't elaborate, she chooses not to ask. In the distance a voice screams towards them.
"Asuna the Coward!"
Ty Lee and Azula both turn and see Po Boh thirty yards away laughing heartily. Ty Lee raises an eyebrow to this and turns back to her girlfriend. "What's that about?"
Sighing in defeat, Azula replies, "It's a long story."
Ty Lee fidgets a little. She replies, "Okay."
Po Boh continues to laugh at her expense and the look on her face. Azula shakes her head and turns away. She mutters to her lover, "Come on."
As Azula limps through Lanxi on her busted ankle, she gets back into her own head, just as Roland had predicted. She carries a bag of candles and fish. A limp, ripped dress, hair falling all over the place, and the hottest day of the entire year. She thinks and thinks and thinks. She thinks about it too much. She thinks that perhaps it's all a sign that she's not ready to do it. Maybe she can't do it. Maybe she is a coward.
'No. I've never been a coward. Not Azula and not Asuna.'
There's still time to make it the perfect day. There's still time to not be a coward. She can place a few candles, get the food started, and at least the moonflowers are already set. She just needs a minute or two in the house. They arrive at the door.
Stammering she says, "I, uh, need to go in alone for a minute. I have to set, um, some things up before we can commence 'the ritual.'"
"Asuna," Ty Lee interrupts her. "I need to tell you something first."
"Sure, sure" Azula replies offhandedly. "Anything. But we always start with the ritual."
"This is more important."
"Uh, umm," Azula looks around but then at those grey eyes. She sees how serious Ty Lee is being. She finally stops stammering and nods. "Yes. I'm here."
Ty Lee takes a deep breath in through the nose. She pauses for a moment and then releases slowly out through the mouth. She nods her head a few times while making direct eye contact with Azula. She summons all of her courage. She doesn't allow herself a chance to back out. In a hurried tone she speaks.
"Normally, I would make some grand gesture but I just couldn't put the logistics together, plus the planning, and just I thought you would appreciate being more blunt about it."
Confused, Azula asks, "About what?"
Ty Lee takes another deep breath. She psyches herself up. She panics all the same as she says, "I've called you many names in our lifetime. But the most important one has been 'Mine.'"
"'Mine?'"
Azula flashes back to another life of hers. One where she stood on a cliff side and insisted that Ty Lee was 'mine.'
"Asuna," the beauty says, pulling her out of the waking nightmare. "I want to call you 'mine' forever. And now that I can, I don't want to wait another second. I don't want to waste any more of our lives. I don't want to do another ritual without knowing."
Oblivious as always, the prettiest, smartest, most perfect girl in the world stares blankly into those grey eyes. She asks, "Knowing … what?"
Ty Lee asks the question that Azula spent so much time fretting over.
The answer is 'yes.'
