A/N: It's bad enough having performance issues with something simple, but what about when you can breathe fire? Well, that's what Deku's gonna find out! Oh, and other people are definitely going to get on his case about it, since it seems par for the course that superhero protagonists get bad press.
When Izuku woke up the next morning, he was not at all expecting a reporter standing in front of the dorms. "Uh, can I help you…?" He asked.
"Hello there! I'm Nara Hidabashi, for Musutafu Central News," the reporter explained. "Are you Izuku Midoriya?"
"Y-yes, ma'am!" he blurted out. "M-may I ask why?"
"Well, rumor has it that you," she said, pointing at him, "accidentally nearly turned Thirteen as charred black as her bodysuit."
"H-how do you know!?" he demanded, before clamping a hand over his mouth.
"So that was you," she noted. "Well, according to school records your Quirk has no known fire-related abilities. Care to explain?"
"I-I need to take it up with Nezu," he said, "and it's a long story besides… can I head to class now?"
"Would it have anything to deal with All Might?" she asked, staring straight into his soul.
"K-kinda?" he said off-handedly. "B-but he's not important here!"
"Oh really?" she asked. "And who is?"
"M-my dad!" he shouted. "H-he's the one with a fire Quirk, it must've finally activated in me for some reason! B-but he works overseas!"
"Your father, eh?" she replied. "Hisashi Midoriya, yes? Does he even know you got his Quirk?"
"I told my mom about it the night it showed up so he probably knows but he hasn't called or wrote or anything yet…" Izuku trailed off.
"Alright, it's fine if you're not sure," she said. "I'll see if your mother will help answer my questions."
"OK… sorry for not being useful Ms. Hidabashi…" he said, dejected but walking off. Unfortunately for UA's new star pupil, that wouldn't be the last he'd hear about the issue.
By lunch time, Midoriya had been called into UA's main office for some unknown reason. When he got there, he was shocked to find a Detective Tsukauchi, along with a few other police officers, waiting for him. "Uh, have I done something wrong?" he asked.
"We just received a tip-off from one Nara Hidabashi that your family may in fact be harboring a villain," Tsukauchi explained. "Care to explain, young man?"
"Wait, Hidabashi?" Izuku asked. "That's the reporter who dropped by this morning! She was asking about my Quirk and I said I didn't know where it came from but since my dad's Quirk was similar, I figured maybe she could ask him. If not that, then my mom."
Truth. Tsukauchi observed. "Well, according to some old reports on All For One, the very first Quirk he manifested on his own, aside from, of course, All For One… was fire breath."
"Wait, are you saying…" Izuku trailed off, the detective's nod telling him all he needed to know. "Th-that doesn't make any sense! If my dad was All For One, why did he still call my mom and I every week? Would All For One have the time for that!?"
"The man never liked getting his hands dirty," Tsukauchi stated. "Who's to say he didn't make time?"
"Well then that still doesn't explain something!" Izuku said. "I'm pretty sure my old pediatrician worked for All For One, so he probably knew everything about me. Given his history, why wouldn't he give me a Quirk? His own son!?"
"His brother passed on the Quirk given to him and generally became a nuisance All For One had to constantly endure," Tsukauchi retorted. "You have that Quirk now. I imagine All For One is not the type of man to make the same mistake twice."
However, Izuku had remembered something that most would rather patently ignore: Nao Shimura had had a sister. Upon mentioning this to Tsukauchi, the detective froze when he realized Izuku was telling the truth. And he was sure of it. "Young man, why did you bring up this fact now?" he asked.
"Because Nana had actually kept track of her extended family." Izuku explained. "Kotaro may have been a lost cause, but his wife, and his sister-in-law, they were good people. The kind of people who were meant to raise and care for heroes."
Tsukauchi raised an eyebrow. Where is he going with this?
Izuku continued. "Of course, Nao Shimura died the day her son's quirk manifested. But do you know what happened to her sister?" Tsukauchi's eyes widened. "She'd gotten married by then, no?"
"Yes, sir." Izuku said. "And do you know what her sister's name was?"
"Inko… Inko… Yukireta, later Midoriya…" Tsukauchi said, mouth agape. "A-and Tomura Shigaraki… he was… was… Tenko Shimura, wasn't he?"
"Yep. We're cousins." Izuku stated, as if it wasn't the biggest bombshell he'd ever dropped. "And I actually got to talk to him before it was all over, did you know that?"
Tsukauchi shook his head. "Did you explain this to Shigaraki?"
"Of course!" Izuku beamed. "Had to let him know there was one person still out there for him. And do you know what happened next?" Again, Tsukauchi shook his head. "All For One… faded from him. He wasn't Shigaraki at the very end. He was Tenko Shimura."
"But what of All For One, then? Surely it didn't just…" Tsukauchi wavered.
"Oh, no, it didn't just disappear. No, you want to know what happened?" Izuku asked. "Well, suddenly in my head I heard shouting. Shouting from the vestiges of the other One For All users in my head. And then… laughing. Laughing, because at the end of it all, the thing that finally got rid of All For One…"
"…was the bond of family." Tsukauchi finished. "Just the way it began."
"Correct, Detective." Izuku said. "And all because All For One hadn't tied up one teensy little loose end. And do you know what happened when I told him my relation to Tenko, to the man he'd turned into a monster, raised as his own terrifying son?" Tsukauchi gulped. "He was furious. But even more than that, well, he was always a big fan of dramatic reveals, so… he was at peace with it. Because who better to defeat him than the boy who was his adopted nephew?"
After all that, Tsukauchi, the other police officers, and the few Pro Heroes who'd been invited to sit in, grew ridiculously still. What was there to say to all that? But finally, Tsukauchi said, "I – no, we apologize for doubting you, Izuku Midoriya. Within you is the heart of a hero, and no suspicions of your father's identity would ever change that. You can head back to class now."
"Thank you, Mr. Tsukauchi. I'll be sure to remember that." Izuku said. With that, he headed back out, only for the sound of cheers to erupt inside his head. He smirked. Mind holding off the party until I go to bed, guys? I've still got classes… he thought to himself, even as he began to grin.
Meanwhile, at Musutafu Central News…
Nara Hidabashi sat at her desk, flashing her 10,000-yen smile as she prepared to present the noontime report. Watching her cameraman's signal, she began. "Hello everyone, this is Nara Hidabashi for Musutafu Central News, here with your Noontime News! Our top story: Izuku Midoriya, UA student and future candidate for the Number One Hero, may in fact be related to Japan's greatest villain!" After composing herself, she continued, "Yes, that's right, new evidence is coming to light that Izuku Midoriya may in fact be related to notorious supervillain All For One, who may have been using the alias Hisashi Midoriya for the past several years! A recent interview conducted by yours truly, as well as footage from his class battle training at UA, has revealed that Izuku Midoriya's Quirk may not be what it seems!" The video clip of Izuku igniting a giant flame pillar showed, as she went on, "These new found flame powers may well rival Endeavor's when Izuku gets older, but he has never once shown them until now! Indeed, he has confirmed they are a very recent development, one supposedly inherited from his chronically absent father." At this, an image of a file was pulled up, one on the history of All For One. "And according to All For One's history, as dictated by All Might himself, All For One's very first Quirk… was Fire Breath, just the same as Hisashi Midoriya!" As she said this, she added, "Of course, the sins of the father should not carry on to the son, but it's rather hard to stomach the fact that the supposedly well-and-truly defeated All For One may still be around, providing his hero-in-training son with Quirk after Quirk to use as he sees fit! We only hope the Midoriyas see sense and rightfully turn in the patriarch, for the good of all of Japan, and indeed, the world." After a very subtle cough, Hidabashi finished, "This has been Nara Hidabashi, for Musutafu Central News. Musutafu Central News: The news network of heroes past, present, and future!" With that, the cameras cut, and Hidabashi breathed a sigh of relief.
However, just moments after she'd said her piece, comments came flooding in defending Izuku Midoriya and stating that not only would such a claim be cliché as hell, but also what purpose did it serve if it was just plain wrong!? Hidabashi, of course, had been absolutely sure she'd been correct, but soon enough, a police interview was disclosed involving the famed Detective Tsukauchi which revealed that not only was Izuku Midoriya not related to All For One, he was actually directly related to now-deceased villain Tomura Shigaraki and his grandmother, Nana Shimura, the former Pro Hero who had died fighting All For One. There was also a statement about ghosts which Hidabashi didn't buy for a second, but everything else had damn near filled her entire story with holes. And Musutafu Central, which had always prided itself on being factual and completely up-to-date with all things hero-related, immediately ordered a retraction of the new story. But Hidabashi had grown conceited with what she thought would be the scoop of the century. So as it all fell to pieces around her, she clung to what little she had left. She stated firmly that she would not retract the story even if her life depended on it.
As was to be expected, she'd been fired that very same day, and in no uncertain terms told that no news agency would ever hire her, or even publish one of her stories, ever again. But Nara Hidabashi was nothing if not determined. She'd put in all that effort to try and prove that maybe their potential Number One was likely to not be trusted. And so, she resolved to get back at Izuku Midoriya another way. After all, she knew where he lived. And as she smiled to herself, making the plans to take her revenge on Midoriya, she reasoned, Well, so what if they won't let me write their stories? I'll make it so the only story they write about… is MINE!
Meanwhile, class 2-A had rescue training with Thirteen, who was stressing the importance of managing the power of particularly destructive or otherwise dangerous Quirks. To emphasize this, she cast a black hole beside a nearby high rise, causing it to tip over and send the nearby buildings crashing down to the ground. "That is an example of what not to do. Now class, can anyone think of a way to properly handle that situation?"
Momo's hand rose. "In this case the proper response should be to ensure the black hole is not strong enough to damage the foundation of any still stable buildings while still being able to move debris around the area."
Thirteen nodded. "Perfect response! Now, any other general ideas?"
Iida responded, "Always ensure that, in a rescue operation, any still intact infrastructure is not damaged in any way. Also, check for damaged, but still usable, infrastructure and equipment. If any is available, make as much use of it as possible without risking further damage. Inoperable equipment should be safely disposed of in a timely manner."
"Exactly right." Thirteen said. "Now, I want all of you to get into groups of three or four so that we can all send you to a disaster zone. Once there, you will have the next half an hour to locate and assist as many survivors as you can while also dealing with any potential hiccups, including a villain or two, that may or may not show up. Groups will be graded based on number of survivors rescued from the total, any injuries those survivors sustained, any unnecessary property damage incurred, and ability to adapt to extraneous circumstances, like villains."
After all that, Thirteen got out a box filled with numbered balls and told everyone to pick one. The end result was 6 groups, 2 with 4 members and 4 with 3 members. They were as follows:
Group 1: Toru Hagakure, Izuku Midoriya, Hanta Sero, Mezo Shoji: Shipwreck Zone
Group 2: Yuga Aoyama, Denki Kaminari, Shoto Todoroki, Momo Yaoyorozu: Conflagration Zone
Group 3: Katsuki Bakugo, Minoru Mineta, Ochaco Uraraka: Typhoon Zone
Group 4: Tsuyu Asui, Tenya Iida, Eijiro Kirishima: Mountain Zone
Group 5: Mina Ashido, Koji Koda, Fumikage Tokoyami: Ruins Zone
Group 6: Kyoka Jiro, Rikido Sato, Mashirao Ojiro: Landslide Zone
"Alright, everyone!" Thirteen called. "Now that you have your groups, please make your way to your assigned zone! The exercise starts in 5 minutes!"
At the Shipwreck Zone…
Izuku approached the Shipwreck Zone, remembering the first time he'd been here almost a year ago. "Hey, so if memory serves there should be a sinking ship in the middle…"
"I see it." Shoji said, motioning with one of his limbs.
"Hm… invisibility's not much use in water and refraction gets worse the deeper I get so I won't be of much help down there…" Toru sighed.
"My tape's decent when wet but I can't let it soak too long…" Hanta added. "Anyway, what are the odds there's something actually down there? People don't sink, they float!"
"If you've got a density-increasing Quirk I wouldn't count on it. Still, they're gonna use robots anyway so it shouldn't matter." Izuku noted. "How well can you all swim? I go to the beach all the time so I'm pretty confident."
"My numerous limbs have greatly increased my swimming speed and stamina. I would say I'm competent." Shoji said.
"My parents never let me swim that often since it was too easy for me to get lost." Toru replied. "Still, I know how to in a pinch."
"My elbow shape makes it annoying but I'm not terrible." Sero replied.
"Alright then, that's good." Izuku said. "Wish Tsu was over here but I suppose Thirteen knew that would be too easy. Anyway, any ideas?"
"We need some way to get to the boat, for one." Sero replied. "Most of the survivors should be near the boat probably."
"As Toru mentioned earlier, some method of detecting those trapped underwater would help." Shoji added. "I would suggest sonar of some fashion but we don't have any real options for that."
"Guess it's up to my light refraction…" Toru gulped.
"Well, getting to the boat should be pretty simple, I can just Float us over." Izuku said. "Problem is we really need to get the survivors back to shore."
"How about Blackwhip?" Sero asked. "Should work just like my tape does for this, right?"
Izuku shook his head. "I don't have the power output to grab several people at once, unfortunately. Or, well, I do, but I really can't control it then."
Shoji's eyes widened. "You won't have to." When he got stares, he added, "My Dupli-arms can be expanded essentially indefinitely. If one of you holds on to me, I can grab the survivors. Toru's refraction will let her act as a flare."
Toru visibly flashed. "Oh, I get what you mean! So, Midoriya floats, he holds you, maybe Sero too, you grab people, and I'll swing around signaling!"
Suddenly Sero jumped up. "Wait, Midoriya, even better idea! You grab me, I hold Shoji with one arm, and Hagakure with the other one. You float around, I swing Toru and Shoji as we pass, we grab the survivors, get back to shore."
Izuku nodded. "That should work! Now come on, prep time's up! Let's go!"
Meanwhile, at the Conflagration Zone…
"Gah!" Kaminari shouted. "All this damn smoke is really screwing with me!"
"Indeed, je ne vois rien non plus." Aoyama replied. "My laser should help some but even with all that training, c'est trop pour moi…"
"I'll have to keep making ice at this rate…" Todoroki said. "Do we have any way of clearing this smoke?"
Momo's face lit up. "A mobile air filter and pump should do it, though I'm afraid that may be too complex for me… I can make filter masks for all of us."
"Yeah, that-" Kaminari coughed. "That'd be great…"
"But what of l'incendie?" Aoyama asked. "Todoroki, I assume you must have a limit to your ice, even with all this heat, non?"
The half-and-half teen nodded. "It's not so much an ice limit as it is a need to release fire once in a while. It's related to my internal temperature."
"And we of course don't want more fire…" the vice-rep noted.
"Wait, hang on a sec!" Kaminari cut in. "We need some way to see through all this fire and smoke, and I've got just the thing! Yaoyorozu!"
"Yes?" she replied.
"You can make something like a searchlight, right?" Kaminari asked. "Even a bulky flashlight for each of us should work."
"Yes… oh I see now! I'll make sure to leave extra wires!" Yaoyorozu said, before quickly constructing the requested flashlights and handing the wires to Kaminari, who bit the ends with his teeth. With that the four of them had light.
"So, what should we start with?" Todoroki asked. "Presumably the trouble comes in the form of those trapped on the upper levels of those buildings."
"Un grand sculpture de glace may help." Aoyama noted. "My laser, in short bursts, can at least assist in identifying survivors. Ice is très bien at reflection, so one laser may go a long way."
"Aoyama you genius!" Kaminari shouted. "Todoroki, get on it, we've got some bots to find!"
Momo then added, "I'll give us all radios to use to help communicate, and packs of glowsticks and speakers to flag down harder to reach survivors. Is everyone clear?" They all nodded. "Then let us get on with some rescuing!"
In the Typhoon Zone…
"Fuckin' stupid wind and dumb rain! It's throwin' me off!" Bakugo shouted.
"Lucky my aim with these balls is still pretty good!" Mineta said with a smirk.
"Still, we need to deal with all this weather!" Ochaco noted. "Wait! Mineta!"
"What?" he asked.
"Your balls still stick in the rain, right?" Ochaco asked, throwing up internally a little at the statement.
"Yeah, they're totally hydrophobic!" Mineta grinned. "Why?"
"Bakugo! How many grenades do you have on you!?" She shouted.
"I got 10 of 'em!" Bakugo shouted back. "What's it to ya, round face!?"
"Stick them to Mineta's balls and we've got sticky bombs!" She said, cringing even as Mineta began cackling at her instruction.
"Sounds dumb as shit but fuck it, I'll freaking do it." Bakugo said rolling his eyes. Unclipping the grenades, he passed them to Mineta, who stuck them hard on. "Alright now what do we do."
"Your problem right now is that all your sweat's washing off, right?" Ochaco said.
Bakugo groaned. "Hit the nail on the fucking head. But don't rub it the fuck in."
"Alright, so we just need to get inside and make a usable opening above ground level in a few buildings." She began. "That way we can gather survivors trapped outside in a dry place without worrying about flooding our safe zone."
"And how the hell do we do that, round face?" Bakugo glared.
"What's that thing you did in the Joint Training? Explode-a-pult?" Ochaco asked. "Well, let's say Mineta hands me a ball. I can then use that to stick on to people. All you have to do is get me over there."
"Hah! I actually like that plan! Nice and bombastic, just the freaking way I like it!" Bakugo said.
"Yeah, and I do too!" Mineta said. "It's not every day I willingly get girls to touch my balls!"
Ochaco struggled not to vomit at the comment but the starting signal snapped her out of it. "Alright, let's get out there and do this thing!"
High in the Mountain Zone…
"W-woah… it's k-kinda chilly… Kero…" Tsuyu said, shivering slightly.
"Are you alright, Asui!?" Iida shouted. "Kirishima! We need to make sure she keeps warm!"
"I hear ya, Iida!" the redhead replied. "But uh… how?"
"I-it's fine!" Tsuyu said. "I-I've had worse… Kero…"
"It's really not, Tsu!" Kirishima countered. "Your tongue and sticky limbs are our best shot at saving people stuck on the cliffs! If you go down, we fail!"
"Kirishima is correct!" Iida agreed. "We must ensure you do not freeze up! Kirishima, do you have any ideas as to how?"
"I was hoping you would!" Kirishima said. "Wait, actually… I think I have one. But it's… gross."
"A gross idea is better than no idea at all, Kirishima." Iida replied. "What did you have in mind?"
"Uh, Tsu, you can secrete mucus, right? Like a lot of it?"
"Y-yeah? W-why? Kero." Tsuyu asked, confused.
"Well maybe it'll help insulate you if you, I dunno, coated yourself in it?" Kirishima said.
"Bleurgh! Th-that s-sounds disgusting! Kero!" Tsuyu countered, not wanting to coat herself in snot.
"You don't wanna get hypothermia, do ya? Just do it!" Kirishima said.
"F-fine… I-I'll do… it… Ke… ro…" But before she could, she passed out, too cold to move. Her body sank into the small layer of snow coating the ground, cooling it further.
"Oh crap." Kirishima sweat dropped.
"I would berate your language but under the circumstances I agree." Iida groaned. "But we still need a solution. And we need one fast."
"Fast… fast… that's it! Iida, your engines!" Kirishima said, pointing at them.
"My… engines? What of them?" he asked, not understanding his classmate's point.
"Your engines pump out exhaust, right?" Kirishima replied, and Iida nodded. "Alright so let's say you let off a quick burst of your afterburners. I think the heat from that should be enough to wake Tsu back up."
Iida thought for a moment, then nodded vigorously. "That should work, Kirishima! In the meantime, I can use my speed to scout the cliffs!"
"What about me?" the redhead asked.
"I can already see at least a few people trapped above," Iida said, pointing up. "Your quirk makes you tougher than steel, so get to climbing!" With a nod, Kirishima did just that, keeping close watch on Tsuyu as Iida fired off a Recipro Burst near some… kindling!? Holy crap that's perfect! As he kept climbing, he heard Tsuyu slowly getting up.
"Uh… what now? And where are you guys?" she asked.
"I'm up here, and Iida's finding other survivors!" Kirishima called down. "Get to climbing, and bring them all back to the fire!"
"On it!" Tsuyu called back. "Also how are you not cold? You're shirtless! Kero!"
"Don't ask, just go!" Kirishima shouted. Tsuyu shrugged. It was better not to question it.
In the Ruins Zone…
"Woah, this is… creepy." Mina said.
"Indeed, the emptiness is feeding my black abyss." Tokoyami added.
"I-I just hope there aren't too many bugs…" Koda moaned, "But I guess I can still help…"
"So, what's the plan?" Mina asked.
"I-I can help look for s-survivors if there's a-any animals…" Koda noted.
"Dark Shadow appears to have gained strength upon entering this forsaken domain." Tokoyami noted. "He will be instrumental in removing any debris."
"Yeah, I'm feeling tougher already!" the shadow being called.
"And I can help melt stuff down to make things easier to carry and clear out!" Mina said. "Oh, and my acid tends to make a pretty loud sizzling against concrete so…"
"Wait, d-does that mean…" Koda asked.
"Yep!" Mina grinned. "I'll spray some acid near any survivors and you guys just need to follow the sound! Sounds good, right?"
"Even in destruction, there is something to be gained." Tokoyami said. "Very well, let us commence."
"Alright! Let's do this!" Dark Shadow shouted, and Koda called over a flock of birds to start scouting through the ruins.
At the Landslide Zone…
Sato popped a candy in his mouth and felt himself bulk up as he looked down at the mud and dirt. "So, we gotta dig through that?"
Ojiro flexed his tail and said, "I… think so. Jiro, can you hear anything down there?"
Plugging her jacks in, she shook her head. "It's packed too thick; I'm not getting anything. I might be able to shake it up, but that seems like a terrible idea given, well, you know."
"Well, I'm not digging through all of that, no way." Sato said. "Maybe don't try shaking too hard?"
Jiro looked at him. "What do you mean 'not too hard?'"
"I dunno!" Sato said. "But it's mostly just dirt, right? It's not like thick rock or anything."
"Yeah, you could probably sorta do it like a sifter or whatever," Ojiro added.
"I guess…" Jiro said. "Here goes nothing." With that, she let the vibrations shake off the dirt and to her surprise, it was actually moving in a fairly controlled manner. "Huh. Wasn't expecting that. Alright you guys, Ojiro, you're more maneuverable, head on down and make sure the dirt flow isn't too crazy. Sato, be ready to crack any hard surfaces I start digging up."
"On it!" The two boys said, and they got to work digging up a small mountain's worth of dirt.
Thirteen watched as class 2-A set to work at their tasks, all of them moving with the efficiency of true pro heroes, and she smiled to herself. These kids really know their stuff, huh. Well, time to turn things up a notch! Finding a row of switches at her control center, she began to turn up the settings.
A/N: You didn't think that was all there would be to a class like this, right? Thirteen's ready to turn it up to 11! (Well, the original USJ incident was probably 11, so maybe not that much)
