chapter 3: Meeting Mabel
Notes:
Hello everyone, this is based on a piece of fan art where Reagan and adult Dipper hook up so I decided to write a whole story/universe around it… I may bring Mabel into the mix with Brett at a later date but first some ground rules. 1). Reagan is in her early thirties like the show and Dipper is 19, 2). it is going to be a slow burn type fanfic. 3). it's not gonna be perfect but imma try so if there are Any OOC moments just know I am improving as I go along.
The Music blared on Dipper's cd player. It was one of his favorites. "disco girl, coming through, that girl is you." Dipper sung along to the words.
The boy finished unpacking his last box of stuff from his house. "woo, I would've never liked to get this done." He wiped some sweat from his brow and looked around his new home with a smile.
It was a nice apartment, two stories, two bedrooms, and two baths… a dreamhouse. Especially since dipper sent most of his post high school life on the road. He hadn't had a permanent dwelling since he lived with his parents.
He never had job before come to think of it, most of his fortune came from Grunkle ford's grants which he gave bi-yearly. He still had a healthy sum which mixed with his generous weekly pay check from Jr.
Dipper decided he had earned a break after all this hard work and went to his coffee maker. He turned it on and then leaned against his counters.
A knock on the door caught the boy's attention. "I wonder who that could be?"
He walked to the door and opened it to reveal a girl dressed in a beautiful red dress which went to her knees with black pumps. She smelled strongly of expensive perfume which burned dippers nose. He did recognize her by her long brown hair and the same goofy grin on her face.
"Hi mabel, what are you doing here?"
Dipper's twin sister wrapped her arms around him in a hug. "Hey Baby bro, I heard about your new job, congratulations!"
She said in her her typical excited tone.
"So, you've decided to base yourself in D.C. you have to come to my house in Berkley and have dinner with me and my servants." she never lost that cheery attitude she had when they were little. Mabel had become a P.R. specialization for many of her friends who went into the entertainment industries after High school and got quite good at it. Eventually she became so good at her job she began expanding her clientele to politicians which came with greater paychecks.
"Yeah, and how did you find out about my new job?" Dipper had no way of knowing how much Mabel knew… but he did know that if Mabel knew too much it wouldn't be good. He to play this tactful.
"You're Boss Jr, called mom as soon as you were hired. I knew you writing about all that weird stuff would bear fruit. Who would've thought you, a published author, mom was so proud." Mabel making herself at home as she sat down on the coach.
Dipper chuckled as Mabel talked. Figures that Jr. Would find a way to profit off my journal. Dipper went to the coffee pot which dinged.
"Ooo, bring me a cup and don't skimp on the sugar." Mabel demanded humming to herself. She then went to the music player and traded dippers babba cd for one of her favorite cd's… a boy band named New times that she had gotten into.
"Yes mabel, I swear washington has only made you more demanding." Dipper smiled looking at the pictures of him and Mabel throughout high school. They had never drifted apart since they left gravity falls. Even when dipper was on one of his expeditions trying to remake the journal he made sure to write to Mabel.
"So dipper, you meet any cute girls while in the capital?" Mabel said, a mischievous undertone. She had also never changed her designation as the match maker even after the love god fiasco. Which was funny because she had many boyfriends in the past but none have been her 'soul mate' as Mabel put it.
"No Mabel, I haven't met any cute girls, I'm too focused on work." Dipper Poured Mabel and himself a cup of coffee. He loaded sugar and cream into mabel's cup where as he liked his coffee black. He handed the girl a coffee and sat next to her.
"Dipper," she started disappointment clear on her tone. "You need to put yourself out there. I don't know how many times I've set you up with someone and it didn't work out because you were too scared of commitment."
"Mabel, I'm single by choice. I have too much on my plate to balance a relationship. Besides I have a fulfilling career and a demanding boss."
A loud banging on the door interrupted the twins talk.
"who could that be?" Dipper asked, a taking a couple steps toward the door. He opened it to reveal Reagan still dressed in her gray undershirt and lab coat, hair a mess even though it was stuck up in a ponytail and eye bags very prevalent on her scowling face.
"Reagan, how can I help you?" Dipper asked, confused by why his boss and neighbor came over. "Don't tell me you want to borrow a cup of sugar?" Dipper jabbed, trying to keep calm.
"Coffee will do just fine, no sugar or cream I like mine black." She groaned, weariness clear on her tone. She stumbled closer to dipper as she entered the house.
"Your dad break the coffee maker again?" Dipper remembered when he first moved in and Reagan asked him for coffee. Apparently this was a common thing.
"Yep, you got any beer? I'm thinking an irish coffee would do me well." She groaned stumbling into the house and plopping down on dipper's recliner.
"Sorry reagan, I'm still 19, so no booze." Dipper replied going to make his boss her coffee.
"Ugh, damn alchohol regulation laws… I should have Jr. Use his contacts in congress to change the legal drinking age to 18." Reagan sounded upset but that was a second thought to dipper as he froze when reagan revealed too much.
"Ahem, hey there I'm mabel dipper's twin sister." Mabel held her hand out to reagan who jumped like she had first noticed the girl.
"Oh, uh, hi I'm reagan, I work with your brother." Reagan said, looking at dipper to make sure everything was cool.
"Yeah mabel, reagan's my editor, and she is actually one of the higher ups at cognito inc." Dipper said handing Reagan her coffee.
The girl took a deep inhale of the scent of coffee and sighed with a smile. "Dipper, you are one of the best coffee makers ever… you always have the best blends and you know how black it needs to be… to new ventures." she raised her mug and took a long sip.
Dipper watched the woman chug the coffee while he and mabel nursed thiers. He looked back at his sister and saw she wore a smile on her face.
"so dipper, how'd you and reagan meet?" Mabel asked, looking back and forth from the two coworkers.
"well, she was there for my interview with cognito publishing and I found out just recently that me and her are neighbors." Dipper tried to keep the details brisk as possible. Mabel knew about the wierdness of gravity falls but he couldn't risk her finding out about The shadow government.
Mabel bore a smirk. "Are you two dating?" Both dipper and Reagan almost choked on their coffee at Mabel's question. "What? Mabel, no!?"
"what? It's just a question?" Mabel snickers. "anyway I've kept you long enough. Dipper, don't be stranger and when you come to my house don't be afraid to bring reagan with you." Mabel rose and exited the house leaving the two awkward co-workers to stew in their discomfort.
"sorry about her, Mabel has been involved in my romance life since I was old enough to notice girls. Ugh, sometimes I just wish she'd leave me alone when it came to that."
"at least you have someone so cheery in your family. My mom and dad hate each other and make it so hard to like them."
"your dad lives with you right?" Dipper asked rising to get himself a refill.
Reagan rolled her eyes. "don't remind me. I swear he makes my home a nightmare. He's loud, grounchy, unsupportive, a compulsive liar, and so gross!"
Dipper began to laugh out loud while he poured his coffee. He nearly burned his hand as he filled his cup.
"well I'm glad my pain is funny to you." Reagan crossed her arms, frowning.
"It's not that? It's just that it's funny. The way you describe your dad… exactly what I thought of grunklestan." Dipper let himself calm. He then paced toward reagan and sat down.
"Tell me about him?"
"well he was a con man, not the greatest but don't tell him that. I could swear that he hated me and mabel when we first came to the mystery shack but as time went on he grew on us and we on him. If it wasn't for stan then I would never have had the greatest adventures in my life." Dipper looked outside where it started to rain. He smiled as she remembered all the fun he had with his grunkle and stan.
"Sounds like my dad alright… to family." Reagan raised her mug.
Dipper smiled and did the same. "to family."
The two drank deep and finished off their mug. "well I've got room for one more mug, how about you reagan?"
"sure thing, it's not like I'm getting any from home today." reagan shifted on the coach and leaned back.
Dipper went to get their refill.
"So, what was the worse thing you're grunkle ever do to you?"
"Well, the worst thing was… he made me shave his back… ugh." Dipper shivered thinking about it.
"Ooo, that's bad but I can beat it. One time I went to use the bathroom and my dad left the bathroom door unlocked while he was bathing." Reagan had a smile on her face when she said this sending a chill down dippers spine.
"Ouch, you win, looks like we both have gross relatives. But we love them." Dipper said bringing reagan her coffee.
"Yeah, at least I think I do." Reagan sighed looking out the window. "dipper, do you think I'm a bad person."
"well you're no walk in park but I don't think you're bad." Dipper said.
"the reason my dad was made was because I disagreed with him when he said that Jr was trying to push me out by hiring you… he then called me a terrible failure and went to the bar." Reagan said her voice neutral, but a small quiver broke out at the end.
"Thats… terrible. You're one of the best co-workers I've ever had. You're not exactly a social butterfly but then again neither am I… but how could a father say that to his daugther."
"It's okay, I'm used to it." she said.
"well, if you ever need someone to talk to… I'll be here." Dipper handed reagan her coffee mug.
The two's eyes locked on and reagan gulped. "I should be going… thanks for the coffee."
She chugged her coffee and ran off.
"wait, let me give you some for the road." dipper ran off and pulled out a thermos and filled it with black coffee.
He handed Reagan the thermos and held the door for her. "do you have an umbrella?"
"No, but I'll be fine." Reagan was about to exit when dipper pulled out a yellow umbrella.
"you can borrow this one… return it when you have the time." Dipper handed the girl the umbrella unaware that her blush covered her whole face. Reagan walked away and dipper felt his knees go weak… he didn't understand why but reagan made him feel this way ever since their first assignment together.
It was probably just nerves.
