Academy city.

It's a city.

Well, it's in the name. Academy city. Has to do with schools or something.

It has two point whatever million people living there. Not to mention the whole super powers thing.

Yeah, that's right. Students can have super powers. 'Espers' they're called.

Pretty cool huh.

Walking down a busy sidewalk was a boy with spiky black hair. School had just ended and summer was finally starting.

However, that wasn't the case for him.

'Man, who even invented supplementary classes? Obviously someone that doesn't understand how a protagonist's power works.'

For he was Kamijou Touma. A level zero esper with a decent social standing, bad luck, and a curious power unrecognized by the system scan.

If there was one thing that stood out in particular, it would be a strange delusion he held firmly to.

'I guess it's fine though. Obviously this is part of some secret organization's goal to put me down; why else would the system ignore my amazing power?'

He believed himself to be the main character of an anime. Not that one could blame him for it. His life was full of downs and not a lot of ups.

Luck was nonexistent and even his special power which resided in his right hand was ignored. It was unsurprising that he went to this conclusion, despite how much of a stretch it truly was.

Touma continued to follow the familiar trail home. But it was then that something came over him. A strong persistent churning in his gut made itself known.

A low rumble escaped and he knew what he had to do.

Taking an abrupt left turn, the protagonist made his way to the nearest restaurant to satiate his hunger.

Taking in the cool air conditioning of the building, Touma let out a relaxed sigh as he passed through the glass doors.

Before the boy could check out the menu, he caught sight of a curious scene. A young girl, who looked to be around fourteen, was sniffling as she pulled out several Yen from her wallet.

'This looks like a job for yours truly!' An eager grin formed on his face as he thought of his time to shine.

Schooling his expression, Touma shoved one hand in his pocket and moved next to the girl. "You know, it's kind of sucky to force a girl out of her…"

Finally looking at the girl he was defending, he was able to make out her more prominent features. The standard Tokiwadai summer uniform, medium length brown hair, and a killer glare directed at the boy.

Quickly stepping past the girl, Touma wrapped his arm around the closest teen and turned to face the rest of the group.

Voice lowering to a whisper, the protagonist addressed the shady diners. "I don't know what you did to get her attention, but do not be fooled by this cutesy act. I'm giving this as a warning, but it's worthless to resist. Give up and it might hurt a bit less."

Looking at Touma as though he grew a second head, the delinquents were unsure how to react.

Eventually, one of them gathered together a response. "What cutesy act? She looks normal to me. Is this some kind of joke? You saying a little girl can beat us up?!"

The protagonist could feel his heart dropping to his stomach. "What do you mean?! She was clearly glaring at me!"

Turning around, he could only cry inside as he saw a confused and embarrassed teenage girl. Gazing down at her feet, the Tokiwadai student shuffled in place.

'Damnit! She's really got her act together. The freakin psychopath.' Touma could feel a drop of sweat run down his chin as he turned back to the group.

He could only curse his luck as a group of guys exited the bathroom at the same time and came over.

"Hey, there a problem boss?" One of the guys spoke to a now frowning leather jacket wearing teen.

"Yeah, right over there." Raising his hand, he pointed directly at the spiky haired boy.

Line break

The clacking of shoes on pavement and loud shouting could be heard echoing from a large bridge in a remote area of district 7.

But these weren't the sounds of an epic chase with the protagonist escaping the clutches of a powerful gang.

Rather, they were screams of pain and fear.

Bodies littered the ground as smoke rose into the air. The smell of ozone permeated the horrific scene.

Touma could only stare on in despair as he watched the last delinquent fall to the torrent of lightning.

"How could you do this! Truly, you are a monster who knows no bounds. Is this what can be expected of Academy city's esteemed level fives?!" The boy swung his hand outward as he dramatically confronted the level five.

Said level five looked on in disappointment as she flicked her hair behind her head. "Are you done now?"

She continued without letting Touma respond. "I get you have this sort of bad guy view of me, but could you please stop confronting me whenever you see me? I was actually helping out with Judgement stuff this time around, so if anything you're in the wrong."

The protagonist crossed his arms and shook his head. "As if you could fool me with your lies, why did you chase us all the way here and attack all these completely innocent delinquents!"

The level five gaped at this. "Weren't you stopping them from coming onto me- you know what, nevermind."

Palming her face, she could only let out an exasperated sigh. "Like I said, I was helping Judgement and you broke my cover. It took a good amount of work to get that lead. It was only natural that I let off some steam right?"

"Let off some steam by going to a secluded bridge and ruthlessly attacking these guys." The spiky haired boy deadpanned.

The Tokiwadai student shrugged her shoulders. "What? This area doesn't have any security cameras and I'm sure none of them are dead, so it's all good."

The protagonist widened his posture and brought up his fists.

"I knew we could never see eye to eye on this. Prepare for battle, we will settle this once and for all, Misaka Mikoto!"

This was it. This was the moment he had been waiting for. Finally, he could show this level five what's good for her.

"No."

"Oh, ok."

'Damnit! I can't refute that logic. It seems that I still have much to learn before I can properly face the third ranked level five.' Touma thought in absolute defeat.

Never in a thousand years had he imagined that this fight would play out in such a way. It was so sudden that he not only accidentally accepted Misaka's blunt denial, but forced himself to believe it was her strength of will rather than his own lacking.

So Touma went home and nothing special happened on the way there.
