Devilman: The Power of Amon

AN: And here's the next chapter of my Devilman story. This time, Amon is an active character unlike how little he was present in the first chapter. I hope you enjoy!

Now to reviews.

2 The Return

Kaori quickly moved through the halls of the hospital, complete worry etched on her face as she got closer to one of the hospital rooms.

She heard the news of what happened a few days ago, and when she heard that her husband died and Akira was in the hospital, she immediately booked a plane ticket to Nepal and went to see her son.

As she got close to a room she was told Akira was currently in, she saw a doctor walk out before closing the door and meeting her.

"Are you Kaori Fudo?" the doctor asked.

"Yes. Please, doctor, tell me how is my son," she said, her voice almost sounding like it was a demand.

"Well you don't have to worry about physical condition, he has made a speedy recovery but will have to stay here for a little while," the doctor answered as he looked through his notes, which made Kaori sigh in relief. Her son was safe which made a heavy load fall off her chest. "However, there are other complications."

That immediately got her eyes wide. "What complications?"

"One of the injuries he received was a hit to the head which seems to cause him to have amnesia," the doctor answered which made Kaori's expression look almost horrified. "Do not worry, the effects seem to only be temporary. When he introduced himself he was able to remember his name, but when we asked for his last name he seemed confused. It took him a few moments but he remembered it. We asked him some more personal questions and while he struggled he got to remembering them."

Once again, relief filled Kaori's heart. She was thankful to whatever deity was out there that she was able to at least keep her son.

"Can I… can I see him?"

The doctor nodded and gestured to the door.

Amon, currently in Akira's body, simply lay on the bed of the hospital, his leg in a cast as that was the one thing that didn't completely heal when the possession happened. He wasn't particularly fond of the smell of this place, it seemed way too, what's the best way to put it, artificial.

These past couple of days were… quite something he had to admit.

He was definitely asleep in ice for a long time, if all those buildings, clothing, and vehicles the humans had were any indication. He honestly couldn't help but feel some sort of awe for all the achievements the humans have made. Sure, he expected it considering that the demons were eventually driven out from the world as the dominant species but still it was something.

He had access to Akira's memories, sure, but seeing all of these things with his own eyes was a different experience. Those memories did come in handy when those doctors began asking him all those questions.

Amon had to admit, this Akira Fudo had quite an uninteresting life. If anything, his life was pretty pathetic.

And yet, there is still one question that plagued his mind. Specifically… How the hell did he end up in that ice cave?! And what was that wound?!

Was he defeated in battle? That scenario was pretty hard to wrap your head around, especially considering that Amon was among the top alphas of any demon clan, so unless Satan himself battled him then the fighting scenario is very unlikely. Who else would be strong enough? That fool Xenon? Ha! He wishes.

Someone would think this would just be Amon bragging, but it's the truth. And those who didn't believe found out the hard way.

And what exactly happened to the other demons? Were they there as well? Sure there weren't many of them after they retreated back to the Underworld, but there should still be some out there.

He couldn't be sure, so he had to lay low, and that meant playing the role of 'Akira Fudo' for a little while.

The clicking of the doorknob was heard, snapping him out of his thoughts and he saw a middle-aged woman with glasses enter. As he was searching for Akira's memories when those doctors questioned him, he remembered the face of the woman as Akira's mother.

"Hello, mother," he greeted her.

"Hey, Akira," Kaori greeted back but was somewhat taken aback by the boy's formal tone. She sat on a chair next to him and palming his cheek, a sad smile on her face. "Are you alright, my dear?"

'Akira' nodded. "I am. I got much better after that incident up in the mountains. They said I would be up and about very soon."

Kaori's smile dropped and she suddenly found it hard to look her son in the eye. "Akira, listen. Your father, he…"

"He's dead, I know," 'Akira' answered. "They told me a while ago." He then gave a sigh. "Shame. And he was such a good man."

Then he looked back at Kaori and was surprised to see the expression on her face. She looked at him with a shocked face, as if she was expecting his reaction to be different.

"Mother? Is something wrong?" he asked.

Kaori blinked for a few moments before shaking her head. "Oh, no, no, everything is fine. I'm just… I'm just glad you are alright."

Amon found this behavior a bit odd but nodded nonetheless. "So, how are the others?"

Kaori gave a sigh. "The Makimuras were devastated when they heard the news, Miki, and Taro especially. Miki insisted on coming but her folk decided that while this was tragic, she shouldn't be skipping school and her track practices. We contacted your school and explained the situation to them. Other students wish you well and that you quickly."

"Ah, I see," Amon said. "And are you staying here?"

"Um, yes, I rented a hotel room for the next couple of days," Kaori explained. She had a conflicted look on her face, which Amon still found strange. "Are you sure you are alright, Akira?"

That made the young man blink. "Well, yes. I did say that, didn't I, mother?"

She gave him a smile. "Right, of course. I just wanted to be sure." She then got up. "Would you excuse your mom for a moment? I need to speak to the doctor."

"Yeah, sure," he said to which she smiled again and walked out of the room.

That was strange. Why on Earth did she react like that? He thought he gave the best responses he could, but it would seem that he made a misstep somewhere.

He then began focusing, using his devil eyes the wall of his room became transparent in his vision and saw Kaori begin conversing with the doctor. Enhancing his ears as well, he was able to hear what those two were talking about.

"Look, doctor, I'm worried."

"What is it, Mrs. Fudo?"

"My son, he… he doesn't act like himself?"

"What do you mean?"

"You see, my son is a very sensitive boy. What I mean is he is very sympathetic and could often cry. He sometimes even cries when he can see or hear that other people are sad. I remember when our pet cat died last year, he cried every time someone mentioned it for the next week.

"But now, when I mentioned his father's death, he didn't cry at all. He didn't even begin to tear up. And I don't remember him ever addressing me as 'mother' before. He was too… formal with me."

Oh, so that was it.

'Great. Why did this mortal have to be a special case?' Amon thought irritatingly.

That's one of the problems with possession. While it does give you access to the person's memories, your own personality overwrites the one of the person you possessed, so you don't have mannerisms or have the full picture of their personality.

Amon's access to Akira's memories was limited, only getting the more broad scopes at first. If he wanted to get the specifics, he would have to focus really, really hard on it. But that would take quite a while.

He thought he picked a safe approach when addressing Kaori, but it looked like he miscalculated.

"Well, Mrs. Fudo, we didn't see any lasting brain damage he might have sustained so that probably isn't a factor," the doctor explained. "But I think that might be because of the traumatic event. The boy lost his father in front of him, and he himself almost died. I wish this was the first time I saw someone's personality change due to severe mental trauma, but I'd be lying."

"But… the change is so… he seems like a completely different person. I barely recognized him when he spoke to me."

"It's likely that he was affected more than the usual person. I don't know what else to tell you, but what happened, happened. If you are worried then I suggest maybe have your son visit a professional therapist. That's the best I can offer in this situation."

Amon smirked. Looks like things didn't look so complicated after all. This mental trauma seemed like a perfect excuse if he behaved differently from the real Akira Fudo.

'Well, I guess I can have some of my fun in the mortal world after all,' Amon thought as he put his hands behind his head. 'From my memories… well, Akira's memories, there are a good number of attractive women in his life.' Amon's tongue moved across his lips. 'I think they will serve me just fine.'

His mind then went wandering to the past. 'Still, I wonder how those two are doing without me. I hope they weren't too lonely over whatever time I was gone.'

Kaori then entered the room, with the doctor standing at the door. She walked next to Akira's bed.

"Listen, Akira," Kaori said. "I'll be in town until you are released from the hospital. After that, the two of us are going back to Japan."

'Akira' gave her a nod. "Sure. Whatever you say."

Kaori then leaned down and kissed him on the forehead. "I'll see you later. Sweet dreams."

"Bye, mom. Hope to see you soon."

That brought a smile to Kaori's face. "Bye, Akira," she said, happy to see her son getting better. She once again walked out of the room, but not before waving at her son, with him waving back.

Amon smirked. Looks like he was able to at least ease the woman's worries. Good. That at least made his problems a little less complicated.

Soon, he would be out of this place, and he will see what this new world had to offer him. He simply couldn't wait.

The day of his departure came in a blink of an eye. He was released from the hospital and soon found himself on a plane to Japan. So another thing that humans seemed to master was the ability to fly, even if it is through a machine.

It was a strange feeling for Amon, flying without being the one who actually does the flying. It was again quite an impressive accomplishment for humanity, but nothing can beat the power of flight with your own wings in his opinion.

He honestly had to fight the urge to break through the window and soar through the cloudy sky, feeling the wind against his face, and the freedom it brings. But he had to restrain himself so his cover wouldn't be blown.

They got to the Fudo residence at sunset, the building itself simple two-story flat colored white. However, they were not alone there. Standing near the house was the entire Makimura family, all of whom were waving at Kaori and Akira.

"I texted them that we would be arriving," Kaori explained. "I hope you don't mind."

"Not at all," Amon said as he looked at the family of four. However, his eyes then landed on one particular person, Miki Makimura. Seeing the young girl's face, not to mention her lovely smile, reminded him of her.

Kaori noticed her son staring and gave a little chuckle.

That got Amon's attention. "What?"

"Oh, nothing, sweetie. Nothing at all," she answered. She was glad that at least her son's attraction to Miki seemed to stay the same.

"Akira, Kaori, thank God you're here!" Noel said as the two approached. He then cast a glance at the young man, and he could immediately say by Akira's posture that he held himself differently than before. "Hey, Akira, I'm sorry that your trip ended the way it did."

Akiko then silently clasped her hands together. "Indeed. Reijiro was a good man. Hard to believe that he's gone."

Kaori looked down in sadness. "Yes, it really is. We'll miss him."

"Yeah," 'Akira' simply said.

That got surprised reactions from the Makimuras. They knew Akira for almost his whole life, and they expected his reaction to be a lot more drastic. But here he didn't seem as bothered as he would normally be.

To Miki, that was really concerning. "Are you alright, Akira?" she asked.

"Um, yeah I am," he answered.

"But you're not crying," Tano said as he got closer to 'Akira'. "Why aren't you crying, big bro?"

"It's nothing, kid. Don't worry about it," Amon dismissed before turning to Kaori. "Say, can I go for a little walk? I… think I need to clear my head."

Kaori looked at him, a bit unsure if she should let him. But soon, she gave him a nod. "Alright, but don't be gone for too long."

Amon smiled. "Thank you," he said before turning and walking away. "See you all later!"

Once he was a good enough distance, Noel turned to Kaori. "What happened to him? Why does he act so… different?"

Kaori sighed. "The doctor said it must be because of what happened. That experience seemed to have changed him. He didn't cry when I mention Reijiro either."

"Wait. Does that mean that Akira isn't who he was?" Taro asked.

Kaori shook her head. "It's nothing like that. Akira is still who he is, just a bit different. That I can assure you."

The Makimuras couldn't help but feel even sadder about the young man they knew for such a long time. Such a tragedy, it could change anyone.

Miki felt particularly sad about her long-time friend as she watched him slowly disappear from view.

'Oh, Akira,' she thought. 'Why did this have to happen to you?'

It was some time later that Amon found himself walking through the city streets. The sights were familiar to him yet completely foreign. He supposed that's what happened when you meld with someone who so many years ahead in the future.

He was also relying on Akira's muscle memory to remember the routes he usually takes and the places he visits, like a café, or an ice cream stand.

There was quite a disparity between seeing all of these things in memories and experiencing them for yourself. Seeing so many people walk around without a care in the world, all those vehicles driving on the roads, the city lights, and the people talking.

This huge jungle made out of stone and metal seemed like such a noisy place, or at least with a different type of noise that he was used to. Looks like he would just have to get used to these noises as well.

Then he took some unfamiliar routes, ones which Akira himself had never been to. He was really curious about this city and what it had to offer. He strolled through places that didn't really have any people there.

As he moved through one of the empty streets, he noticed that it was already night. It would probably be a good idea to return to Akira's, now his home.

"Hey there, kid," Amon heard someone say from behind him. He turned around and he saw a chubby man in a suit and a hungry expression that was accompanied by a wicked smile. "You shouldn't wander alone at night. Especially at these parts."

Amon smirked. This looked like it could turn out interesting. "Oh, really? Was that supposed to be a threat?" he asked confidently.

The man chuckled. "Oh, you've got guts," he said as his body began changing. His clothes got torn as his size increased, his belly became unnaturally bloated, his eyes grew a lot bigger than a human's and his mouth moved to his stomach, showing sharpened teeth, his skin turned green and his arms became mantis-like. "I can't wait to see them spill out!"

The demon rushed at Amon with surprising speed for someone so large, readying his arms to tear him apart. Amon just smirked as the demon got closer.

The demon swung one of his arms but was quickly caught by the young-looking man who just stood there smirking.

"What?!" the demon exclaimed as he looked at what was going on in shock. "How can a human be so strong?"

"Because I'm not human, you fool," 'Akira' said in a deeper tone. Then his own body began transforming, however without the actual ripping of clothes as he had better control over his transformations. He then stood towering over the demon in his devil form, the arm still firmly in his grasp.

The demon's eyes widened even further as he stood there quivering. "A… A-Amon?! Is that you?"

"In the flesh," Amon answered as he began squeezing the arm harder, making the demon whimper. "And you dared to lay your hands on me. I hope you are ready to face the consequences."

"P-please, I didn't know it was you!" the demon pleaded. "You were gone for so long we thought you were dead!"

"Is that a fact? Well, clearly I'm not," Amon said. "Well, since I awakened, there is an itch that I needed scratched. And since you're here, you are going to help me scratch it."

The demon panicked. "No, no, Amon! Please-!"

Amon's smirk just widened as he pulled his arm back, ripping the demon's mantis arm out of its socket with a painful sound of tearing flesh and the cries of the green demon.

The demon loudly whimpered in agony as his stump began spilling gallons of green blood. He quickly turned away and began running from Amon, who just chuckled before throwing away the arm he was holding.

The green demon ran as fast as his stubby legs could go, trying desperately to avoid Amon. Then he came to a halt as he felt a big burst of pain erupting from his chest. He looked down to see Amon's hand going right through him, and in his clawed hand was the demon's still-beating heart.

Amon quickly pulled his hand, making tons of green blood ooze from the hole he made through the demon. He looked at the heart he ripped out finding it still beating before squeezing it and making it burst, spraying some blood on his face.

Amon's tongue then moved out of his mouth, and he licked some of the green blood off of his face. "Hmm, too much chlorophyll for my tastes," he commented before shaking his arm to wipe the blood off of it.

He looked down at the demon's corpse, which was still making a huge green puddle beneath him. Ever since he awakened his devil blood was nagging him to tear something to pieces. And among the countless demons he had killed before, this one wasn't anything special. But it was… satisfying enough for the time being.

He looked around and didn't see anyone that could be spying on him, even with his devil eyes, so he transformed back into his human form and began walking home, leaving the corpse behind to rot.

This confirmed that he definitely wasn't the only devil around. There were others who were hiding, no doubt also disguised in human forms.

Now the real question was, with this knowledge, what should he do from here?

AN: And that is it, my dear readers! I hope you liked seeing Amon in action and the way I characterized him.
