Greetings people and welcome to Chapter 5 of 'Pups At Chernobyl'. Now, first things first, I'd like to mention that there's is going to be some Russian characters plonked onto here somewhere. Reason being I just thought it could look effective? I don't even know anymore. I will state that this is a short chapter, but like I said at the beginning, I was an amateur writer back then.
Well, there's nothing else from except, enjoy chapter five.
P.S. Наслаждаться.
Chapter 5 – Chase's Love to Skye
Skye was resting up in bed on the top floor of the Lookout. Marshall had returned to base to examine how her condition was doing and to see to every injury she had from the crash back at Chernobyl. From aside, while observing, Chase watched the EMT pup do his magic. He wished he was there for not only comfort but aid the bed-bounded Cockapoo. His eyes kept on switching back to Marshall, then to Skye. The same feeling persisted in his veins. He tried to shake them off for the time being and focused on the current situation. Just then, he was brought out of his thoughts when Marshall had finished his inspection.
"I guess there's nothing else that needs sorting. So you're in good shape, that's if nothing drastic happens." Marshall stated. "Thanks, Marshall." Skye praised.
The Cockapoo slowly rose herself up to the point where she could extend her paws down to the ground. She was half steady to go back to flying her helicopter. She felt like being back at square one. Chase, on the other hand, got out of his uncomfortable position and approached her. He knew this was now or never for himself. Chase wanted one more shot at confessing his love towards the Cockapoo before she was snatched by death.
"Hey Skye," Chase spoke. "I see you're looking like your true self now." Skye smiled at his words. She could feel her heart skipping away with cupid's arrow.
"Aww, thanks, Chase." She replied. Chase also felt his heart skipping away with cupid's arrow. He shook off whatever was drowning him out and focused on what he was meant to do. "Listen, I was wondering if you wanted to sit by the shore with me?" Chase proposed. For Chase, it felt like the dumbest thing to ask in the world in the lead up to confessing his feelings toward the flight pup. He felt his body with a sudden urge to slam his paw into his face for asking such a question.
"Sure. I would love that." She answered. The answer caught Chase off guard. "Really? I mean, sure. Happy with whatever you say." Chase smiled, trying to hold back his shock.
Skye asked Marshall if she was able to go out, to which he happily allowed. Since Skye was on the road to recovery, she couldn't walk at a normal pace. Chase helped her to the elevator and back out as they reached the ground floor. The two pups got outside and hiked down to where the sand and the sea met. As Chase carefully helped Skye take her place on the sand, the two sat down and enjoyed the sun descending into the covers of the horizon. "Wow. Just like the night before what happened." Skye pointed out. "You're right, but with a beautiful sunset." Chase added. The two kept their eyes out to sea.
Then Skye began to have a sense of Déjà vu but without the explosion. All the Cockapoo remembered just mere seconds before that night changed everything, was the accompanying German Shepherd claiming he loved something or someone. Skye became increasingly worried. Was it that he loved Everest? Maybe he saw another female pup that isn't a part of the Paw Patrol that he loves. What if he was about to say Marshall and admit that he was homosexual; surely she heard that Everest had feelings for the firefighting Dalmatian in the past. Skye could feel the butterflies in her stomach were rapidly flying faster, or the number just crept up.
The German Shepherd noted that something was bothering the Cockapoo as he turned his head to see a concerning look upon her face. "Is there something wrong, Skye?" Chase asked. Skye jolted like she had woken up from a nightmare. She hung her head then lifted it back up as she inhaled a reassuring amount of oxygen, then exhaled with one thought from her mind. "I can't help but think that were was something you wanted to say to me before the reactor mysteriously blew up."
Chase felt his ears straightening out as he gulped. He knew that she would bring the moment back.
"You mentioned that you 'loved' something," Skye recalled. "Or someone." Chase was felt like every hair on his body had turned white. He took in a huge pocket of air into his nose, and with that air. "I, well, the thing is…" Skye looked more worried. She felt herself leaning a few inches closer from where she sat. Chase couldn't say it, he thought to himself that regret would strike like thunder. His lips trembled. His heart raced like a Formula One racing car. "I love you, Skye." Chase heard himself exhale.
Skye widened her eyes. This time, Chase's reflexes kicked in as his paw plugged his mouth. All he heard was the Cockapoo struggling to find the right words. "Chase, I don't know what to say." She stuttered. Chase lowered his head. His feelings were washed away in the void. The police pup knew just how a robot felt. "I know what you're going to say. And what you have in mind, just speak it, because ever since I set my eyes on you, you just…sort of…stole my heart. But you, I've seen you trying the same thing that I kept on doing: finding a way to express your true feelings. We both were afraid to tell each other the truth. But the bigger truth from me is I nearly fell in love with Marshall due to the fact I couldn't find a girl to fall in love with, the reason being I was bisexual. But then you joined the Paw Patrol a few years back. I completely lost my mind. I was so afraid that if I walked up to you on your first week on the team, you'd run and hide in your pup house; I didn't want to see you like that. Look, what I'm trying to say is even though I love you from the bottom of my heart, you can choose to either love me and spend the rest of your happy years with me, or leave me. But I knew deep down in you that you have the same feelings for me." Chase explained. "I'm used to it."
Skye's eyes started to water up. She felt her gut telling her that she felt bad for the German Shepherd. She did indeed remember her first-ever week on the Paw Patrol. She remembered Ryder introducing her to Chase and Marshall for the first time as she was the fourth member to join Adventure Bay's famous rescue team. She could see herself right now all those years ago when the town was just getting to know the newly formed Paw Patrol. Shy at first, she wouldn't speak to any of the first two members. She'd mostly ask Ryder where everything is. Until the leader asked the police pup to show Skye what there was to see in Adventure Bay, as she was very new to the seaside town.
"So, whatever you say, say it. But we'll still be friends, right?" Chase spoke as he didn't know he had re-awoken the Cockapoo from her flashback. The German Shepherd couldn't tell if she were happy, worried, or angry. All he saw was the back of her head. Chase grew more and more anxious as she kept quiet about her decision. "If you want to be alone, I understand." Chase softly spoke, accepting the fact he had been defeated by life yet again.
True to his word, Chase got up and started heading up to the Lookout. That was when he saw his world spinning around at the speed of light and saw Skye within an arm's length, eyes tight shut with tears streaming down her nose. Chase also felt his lips pushed against with another set of warm lips. Tears began streaming down the police pup's nose as well. Skye broke away and looked into his eyes. "I love you, too." Skye said. "I just didn't want to admit it as I was afraid that I'd lose you just like you'd lose me. But since you spoke about you losing me if you said you loved me, I wouldn't bear the thought as well."
Chase smiled with the tears still flowing. Chase wiped away her tears first and the two wrapped their paws around each other. The sun slowly disappeared behind its cover as the two kissed until the light faded away. Observing from the balcony of the Lookout, Marshall saw the two in good view. He felt happy for both of them. But he also felt sad at the same time. He knew why but dared not say it. Not even in front of a best friend he cares about and the pup he cared for after a horrific accident.
The following day was grey. Ryder and Katie left the parlour and headed for town. Upon their arrival, Igor wandered out of town hall and heard heavy trucks rolling in. They rushed around the corner and troops came pouring out like lava. Igor didn't identify them as the British nor American troops. An SUV came bargaining in and knocked down a flagpole, which had the Union Flag and Star-Spangled Banner hoisted on. Then the driver of the SUV walked out and opened the door for a Soviet commander to climb out.
Chief General Richardson joined Igor by his side, curious about who they are. "Who are they?" Edmund whispered to his advisor. Igor gave an intimidating look. Feeling angered by the invading convoy's presence. "The Soviet Union." Igor answered. The commander, who looked old and held a lit Cuban Cigar in his mouth, approached Igor and kept a metre distance.
"Товарищ Легасов, я думал, что Родина никогда больше о тебе не услышит, до сих пор. (Comrade Legasov, I thought the motherland would never hear from you ever again, until now)." The Soviet Commander spoke in Russian as he took out his cigar.
"Когда я думал, что сбежал, пока не увидел твое лицо. Почему ты здесь? (Just when I thought I escaped it, until I saw your face. Why are you here?)" Igor replied in Russian but whispered the first part. The commander stood still. No sudden threats came in any form. Edmund was the only soldier listening whilst the other allies were busy either watching the Soviet soldiers or carried on performing their duties.
"Ситуация в Чернобыле сейчас находится под контролем Советского Союза. (The situation at Chernobyl is now under the control of the Soviet Union.)" The commander spoke. "Британцы не могут справиться с кризисом. Верховный Суд Советского Союза посчитал, что лучше разобраться с этим самим. (The British can't handle the crisis. The Supreme Court of the Soviet Union thought it be best to handle it ourselves.)"
Not to his surprise, Igor knew his thoughts were right. He knew, of all the governments or supreme courts in the world, the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom wouldn't send the message.
"У меня была идея, что это вы отправили письмо. Я не глуп, чтобы знать уловки моего самого старого врага. (I had an idea that it was you, the one who sent the letter. I'm not stupid to know my oldest enemy's tricks.)" Igor commented. The Soviet Commander stood humiliated, surrounded by his men.
"Значит, вы ясно знали, что это были мы по иероглифам в этом письме? (So you clearly knew it was us by the characters on that letter?)" The Soviet Commander asked in defeat.
"да. (Yes)." Igor replied.
The Soviet commander stood there with no emotions showing. From afar whilst trying to not get detected, Ryder and Katie slowly approached the conversation.
"Я выучил все ваши уловки с тех пор, как сбежал из КГБ. (I've learnt every one of your tricks since I went running from the KGB.)" Igor stated.
"Не напоминайте нам! (Don't remind us!)" The Commander growled. Although his threat was spoken in Russian, Chief General Edmund Richardson picked up on the tone. The Commander spun around. He inhaled his sweet taste of smoke from the Cuban cigar, then let out a massive grey cloud of cancer. He spun back around and, with his enraged deadly eyes, re-met the Professor's eyes.
"Мы прекратили охоту много лет назад; Я могу легко возобновить это одним словом. (We called off the hunt years ago; I can easily resume it with one word.)" The Soviet member stated. "Одним словом, Игорь Легасов. (One word, Igor Legasov.)" Igor raised his head. He felt like he was ready to run. The Commander then turned to the American and British troops. All waiting for what Russian he would speak next for the boys to figure out. "The American and British leave. Order it." The Soviet spoke, but to the non-Soviets' surprise, it was given in English.
"Why? They were the first responders. They've already handled the situation with good care." Igor protested. Igor saw the patience being emitted from the Commander's eyes. The Commander then threw down his Cuban cigar and extinguished the smouldering tobacco contents. "Execute the order, or we decorate the town with red." The Commander calmly instructed.
Igor saw no choice. Edmund was ready to tear apart the white flag and charge at them with all the bullets he had on him. Many of the Chief General's men started raising their artillery, ready for a bloodbath. But a certain ex-Soviet wasn't going to let extra lives be wasted away for nothing for the millions at stake. "Tell your men to leave, Richardson." Igor advised. "But sir, we can't. We can take them." Edmund argued.
"Trust me, storming the Soviet Union is like storming a volcano. The smoke will instantly kill you the moment you passed the line. The eruption has already started, and right now inevitable." Igor stated. Edmund tried to put up a fight, but he saw in the Soviet member's eyes that he wanted the British and Americans to fight. The fingers, fiddling with the triggers on both sides, urging for the action to commence. Edmund withdrew his instincts and turned to one of his men.
"Sergeant Smith!" He called out. Smith came running out of the tents, braked by Richardson's side and saluted, not bothered by the Soviet's presence. "Yes sir?" Smith responded. "Round up all the troops and send them out of here." Edmund ordered.
Smith stood confused. "But sir…" Smith spoke but was cut off by the Chief General. "That's an order."
Sergeant Smith nodded his head and headed for the communications tent. The Soviet commander grinned. Igor turned around and headed for town hall. "And Igor?" The Commander called out the departing Professor. "You and 'useless one' stays." The Commander stated, whilst referring the 'useless one' toward Edmund. Edmund caught up with Igor as he stormed off, whilst Ryder and Katie headed back for the Lookout. Igor could tell not only things would become worse, but rather mentally unstable.
Well, Chase got his chance and finally won Skye's heart over. And I do sense a bit of anger coming out of that Soviet Commander. Well, I should know because I wrote the bloody thing.
Anyways, hoped you enjoyed and brace yourself for the next chapter as the situation back at Chernobyl is about to intensify. When I mean "back at Chernobyl", I mean back at the plant. So do stick around same time, next week, and (because I'm welcoming) feel free do drop a review.
But from me, I'll see you next time, Я не русский, просто использую Google Translate... (I'm not Russian, I'm just using Google Translate... in Russian).
