I must admit, I've never seen this ship before so it intrigued me. But I really enjoyed writing this one-shot. This story is especially fun for me because while I have my favorite ships that I always write about, doing something on the other ones I like but don't write about is actually awesome.
Audrey x Uma
Summary: Audrey left in Descendants 2, but not to a spa vacation. She snuck onto the Isle and joined Uma's crew. They teamed up to help the children of the Isle and, with Mal and Ben cooperating with them, did it.
Jane had walked into the room she shared with Audrey three months before Cotillion to find her friend packing a bag.
Yes, friend. After Coronation, Audrey decided to polish up her act. She apologized sincerely to the VKs and actually became friends with them. She'd even danced with Jay at the after-party, although only as friends.
Anyways, she'd also apologized to some other students, Jane among them. Audrey had requested she give up the room Leah had insisted she have (the old woman had said that the 'future queen of Auradon' needed privacy) and move in with another student.
Since Jane had no roommate, she was that student.
And in these past six months, she'd formed a close relationship with Audrey. They'd pretty much become best friends, and often told each other everything.
For example, Jane learned that Audrey never wanted to date Ben. She had been forced to, by her grandmother. She did love him, but like a brother. And Jane truly began to hate Leah. Turned out the old woman was mentally abusive. Audrey consistently had to put up an act because she was afraid the abuse would turn physical.
Jane was actually the one who convinced Audrey to tell her parents.
Needless to say, Aurora and Phillip were not happy.
"It was awesome!" Audrey said over the phone. "I just stood up at family dinner and said I had an announcement to make. I told them what Leah had done to me, and Mom and Dad exploded! They started shouting at her, and Dad even threatened to get his sword! And Grandpa stared at her in shock and then said- Hey Phil! Do you remember what Grandpa told Leah?"
Phil was what everyone called Phillip Jr, Audrey's little brother. She loved him more than anything else in the world.
"He said, 'Leah, listen up. Either you get some therapy and leave my granddaughter alone, or else we're getting a divorce,' " Phil quoted, his voice sounding a bit muffled, like Audrey had just moved the phone from her ear for a moment so Jane could hear him.
"Yeah! And then when she tried to bring up their marriage contract he said, 'This isn't the fifteenth century Leah! Catch up with the times! Oh, and then Mom threw a rice bowl at Leah's head!"
"What?!" Jane laughed. She tried to picture the usually calm Aurora throwing a rice bowl at her own mother's head, and she had to admit it was a pretty funny image.
"Yeah! It was one of the best days of my life!"
"Are you going somewhere?" Jane asked, and Audrey looked up, giving her friend a small smile.
"Actually, yes," she said, and Jane looked around, eyes widening as she saw what Audrey was packing. All her jeans and casual shirts were being packed up, as well as the ashy pink leather jacket Evie had made her. Jane didn't even know she owned that many casual clothes.
"Where?" Jane asked, a bit worried.
Audrey hesitated, wondering if she could tell Jane, and eventually decided she could.
"I'm going to the Isle," she admitted, sitting down as Jane gasped. "I know you probably think I'm crazy, but hear me out. Mal isn't herself. She's trying so hard to fit the mold of an Auradon princess, she's losing sight of what matters. I know she'll eventually come to her senses, though, so she'll be okay. As for Ben, he's totally overworked. All the stress of becoming King is getting tio him. But once Mal's back, she'll definitely be able to help him. But who knows how long that could take? I certainly don't. So I'm going to the Isle to do something. I'm going to help the kids there, somehow. I don't really know how. We've been making headway on changing the food coming through the delivery barge though, so that's good. And Mal said her Dad owns a restaurant."
Mal had publicly come out as the daughter of Hades after Coronation, and explained how her dad had practically raised her.
"I can go there for help. I went shopping yesterday and bought the type of clothes that will fit in on the Isle. I've been learning more about it from the VKs, so I think I know enough. I want to help, I want to do something. I've already said good-bye to my family, and explained to your mom. I also came up with a believable excuse, or at least believable enough. I'll tell people I've gone on a very long spa trip to my mom's old cottage to recover from what Leah did to me and relax. I'm continuing my school stuff from there. I'll tell them not to reach out to me because there's no Wifi there. They'll believe it. And you can handle preparations for Cotillion on your own, and if you need help ask Carlos. I know you like him. I think that's all."
Jane was shocked, staring at Audrey. How was she talking so casually about all this?
"Will I ever see you again?" she whispered, and Audrey gave her a sad smile.
"I don't know. But that reminds me-" she pulled out some letters "-give these to our friends after Cotillion, they'll explain everything. Maybe they'll come get me, maybe they won't. I'll figure it out."
"I'm gonna miss you," Jane said softly, and immediately felt Audrey's arms around her.
"I'm gonna miss you too."
~Audrey x Uma~
Audrey knew how she was going to get to the Isle. The motorcycles Ben had gotten all of them. Mal had put a spell on all of them to ride across water. It was in case they ever had to get to the Isle to pick up some kids who they felt would be uncomfortable with the limo.
Sadly, no new kids had been picked up yet. It was disappointing, but, Audrey reminded herself, the bikes were coming in handy.
She hesitated for one brief moment, then pulled herself onto the bike. She had to do this.
And then she was gone.
~Audrey x Uma~
The Isle was like the pictures Mal showed her, but worse.
It was dirty, and the kids looked malnourished. Audrey couldn't even describe it, it was awful. One one upside, however, was that the kids weren't quite as starved as they'd looked in the pictures. The new food coming through the barge was working then.
She already knew her first stop, Hades' restaurant.
When she walked in, it was empty. Figures, since it was between lunch and dinner. But Hades was behind the counter, and she walked up to him.
"Lord Hades?"
He looked up, and raised an eyebrow.
"Yes?"
"My name is Audrey. I'm a friend of Mal's, from Auradon."
He froze, and looked up - clearly worried.
"Mal? Is she okay?"
"She's fine, she doesn't even know I'm here," Audrey said, and Hades frowned.
"Why are you here?"
"I want to help. Help the kids of the Isle. Mal isn't herself, and Ben's totally overworked. So . . . I'm here. I thought I could ask you for help, like where should I go?" she explained.
He thought for a moment, then jotted something down on a piece of paper.
"Follow these directions. They'll lead you to a ship. This ship is captained by my niece, Uma. She'll help you," he said. "And what do you mean about Mal not being herself?"
"She's stressed, trying to fit into the mold of an Auradon princess. But I'm sure Ben will be able to help her eventually," Audrey said, giving Hades a small smile as she turned and walked away.
She had a captain to visit.
~Audrey x Uma~
When she walked aboard the ship, the first thing she saw was a sword pointed at her throat. The sword was being held by an attractive teenage boy. He had dark hair, pale blue eyes, and . . . a hook?
Captain Hook's son, she thought. Made sense, he was the son of a pirate after all.
"Who are you?" he asked. "I don't recognize you, and the Isle is a small place."
"My name is Audrey," she said calmly. "Lord Hades sent me, told me to look for a girl named Uma. Is she here?"
"Harry, put down the sword," a girl's voice came, and Audrey turned. Said girl had braided teal hair and dark skin. As she walked up to Audrey, she pulled a sword out. Despite everything, Audrey couldn't help but notice how beautiful the girl was.
"Why did my uncle send you?" the girl, who Audrey assumed was Uma, asked.
"Because I need your help. Can we talk privately?"
Uma hesitated, then nodded slowly. She turned to Harry, and said, "Come with us."
The three of them walked into a room on deck and Audrey explained everything. When she was done, Uma nodded slowly.
"Okay, we'll help you," she said. "We have a spare room anyways. I'll announce it to the crew, and you can get ready."
Audrey gave her a grateful smile, and said, "Thank you."
"And after this, we're giving you a lesson on VK manners," Uma added, and Audrey nodded.
People would probably think she was crazy for even thinking it, but this felt . . . right.
~Audrey x Uma~
Audrey had now been living with the pirates for a month. She'd learned quickly, and Uma seemed oddly . . . proud of her. By now she knew not to say 'Thank you' or 'please' and how to keep her face emotionless. They'd started training her with a sword, and Uma was surprised when she knew how to use one.
"My friend Lonnie taught me a couple months ago," Audrey explained. "I thought it was fun and kept practicing."
She trained for hours a day, and actually enjoyed it. The crew had accepted her as one of them, and she had to admit she cared about them.
The kids though . . . they were what truly brought her joy. Audrey had always wanted to be a mom someday, and she loved seeing any small amount of joy she could bring those kids. She had an idea to offer them a place to stay for the night aboard the ship. They could sleep in a special room set aside for them and get food, all for free. The kids, however, liked to help out around the ship. They said it was "interesting." Helping them made Audrey so happy.
As for food, she was still getting used to it, but she was starting to adapt.
However, she wasn't thinking too much about food or kids on of her two month anniversary of being on the Isle.
No, she was thinking about something much different.
Or rather, someone.
Audrey couldn't get Uma out of her head, and she hated it. While she was open to so many things, this couldn't be happening. Uma was incredible, but she was a captain and a VK. Why would she want to be with someone like Audrey if she could have anyone else, anyone better. Anyone who understood her.
Meanwhile, nearly the same thoughts were running around in Uma's head. She was surprised by how quickly she adapted to Audrey, but having the other girl there felt natural. She knew her feelings extended beyond friendship, but what were the chances Audrey even felt the same? She was a princess after all, and Uma was, well, Uma.
"Uma?" there was a voice, and she looked up to see Harry and Celia walk in.
"Hey guys," she said, shooting them a small smile. "What's up?"
"Nothing much, Celia just wanted to see her sister," Harry said, smiling at Uma. He and Uma were like siblings, and he loved her like he loved Harriet or CJ. He wasn't oblivious, after Celia he probably knew her better than anyone. He knew what was going on with her and Audrey.
After Celia and Uma talked for a while, Harry decided it was time to interrogate his friend.
"Uma?"
"Mmm?"
"Audrey."
The simple word made her look up, and give a careless shrug.
"What about her?" she asked, trying hard to keep her voice steady.
"You like her," he said bluntly, and Uma rolled her eyes.
"Harry, don't be ridiculous," she said, scoffing.
"Pretend all you want, but I know you Uma," Harry said. "I know how you feel about her, and I think it's great."
Uma blinked.
"You do? But . . . she doesn't even feel the same."
"How do you know that? You heard her, before she got rid of her grandmother - if you can even call the old woman that - pretty much her entire life was an act. She knows how to pretend."
Yes, Audrey had told them about that, if only because Uma asked about her relationship with Ben. She said the abuse never turned physical, but Uma had once glimpsed the side of her stomach and could have sworn she saw odd scars, as though someone had raked their fingernails across her skin.
She'd been furious when she saw that, and ready to run over to Auradon just to murder Leah.
"Look, here's my advice," Harry continued, and Uma focused on him, hoping this could come in handy. "Just . . . tell her. You're friends, after all, I'm sure it'll be fine if she doesn't feel the same. Or you can pretend it was a dare."
"Okay, fine," Uma decided, and stood up, giving Harry a brief hug. "See you later."
"Oh, and Uma?" she turned around, and saw Harry smirking as he spoke the next words. "Kiss the girl."
~Audrey x Uma~
When Uma walked into Audrey's room, the girl was laying on the bed and looking at the ceiling.
"Audrey?" she asked, and Audrey looked up, grinning when she saw her friend.
"Hey Uma. What is it?"
"I just . . . I wanted to see how you're doing. It's been two months since you've seen your friends and family."
Audrey sighed and leaned back, which Uma took as an invitation to sit down next to her.'
"Honestly? I really miss them. But I told Mom and Dad I was giving up the throne and they should give it to Phil. I never wanted to be Queen anyways," she shrugged, and Uma found herself wondering what other Auradon royal would be so careless about giving up their throne. "I just hope they're okay, and Leah has gotten that much-needed therapy."
Uma had noticed a while ago how she never called Leah her grandmother, just said her name. Suddenly, she found herself saying, "The other day, I saw these scars on your stomach. What . . ."
Audrey stiffened, then sighed.
"I guess I can tell you," she said, and lifted her shirt so the scars were visible. Uma felt her stomach turn at the sight. "Leah did it. When I was thirteen, and refused to start a relationship with Ben. I told my parents some kids at school did it, and I didn't remember their faces or know their names. They believed me."
"How many times did she hurt you?" Uma asked, her voice low.
"It doesn't matter," Audrey muttered, pulling her shirt down. Without thinking, Uma reached out and tilted her chin up, so the princess was looking at her.
Audrey felt her breath catch in her chest as she froze, looking at Uma.
"Princess," Uma said lowly. "How many times did Leah hurt you?"
"Only a few, and this was the only one that left a mark. It was mostly mental abuse anyways, but it's okay, because it's over now," she said, slightly breathlessly.
Uma found herself staring at Audrey, staring at this girl who had brought so much joy to all their lives, who helped kids without a second thought, who was ready to leave her entire life behind to make a change, who could still stay happy and strong no matter what happened to her.
And suddenly, she leaned forward and kissed her. Without even thinking about it.
And then Audrey was kissing her back, and it felt so right.
After a few seconds, they both pulled away.
"I-" Audrey said, looking shocked. "I didn't think you felt that way."
"Well, I do," Uma said. "And I'm guessing you do too."
Audrey nodded, and then said, "So . . . what now? I know how dating works in Auradon but here . . ."
"We'll tell the crew," Uma said, after a moment of thought. "But no one outside this ship can know, especially my mom. My dad will be okay though. Caring about someone can be a weakness on the Isle, and I don't want someone to use you against me."
Audrey nodded, immediately understanding.
But it didn't matter that no one outside the crew could know, all that mattered right now was that she had Uma.
~Audrey x Uma~
They told the crew on the same day they got together, and they were all supportive. Audrey could have sworn she heard Harry whisper, "Told you," to Uma. They also told Dr. Facilier, who was supportive but told Audrey that if she hurt Uma he would be calling his friends from the other side.
Before they knew it, a month had passed since they became a couple, and Cotillion was in three days.
"I wish we could be there," Uma sighed. "To see Mal's big moment in person."
"Me too," Audrey said, and then Harry barged in.
"Cap'n, Audrey, there's big news. Claudine was out scouting when she saw Evie, Jay, Carlos, and a boy we think is King Ben. Mal isn't with them, and we don't know why they're here," he said, and suddenly a girl walked in behind him.
"Mal's here," Dizzy said, and they all looked at her. The girl was Celia's best friend and cousin, and the crew protected her. "She came into the salon, wanting to get her hair dyed back to purple."
The girls immediately lept into action, Uma talking first, "Audrey, you go to the hideout to see if they're there. And I'll check my mama's restaurant. We'll meet back here."
Audrey nodded, and they both walked out, Uma calling out orders to the crew.
It was time to find their friends.
~Audrey x Uma~
Uma was right, they were at the hideout. When Audrey got there Ben was telling the others about something. He was standing by the door, like he'd just come down.
"What are you doing here?" she asked, and they all spun around, their eyes widening when they saw her.
"Audrey?" Evie said in shock. "But you're at the spa."
"She's been here the whole time," another voice came, and Harry walked out behind her.
"Harry!" Evie exclaimed, running up to him and pulling him into a hug. It was a well-known fact on the Isle that Evie, Harry, and Harriet were triplets, with CJ being their younger half-sister. They were some of the rare kids with good parents. Sure the Evil Queen sucked, but Captain Hook and his wife Elizabeth were amazing people.
"What do you mean she's been here the whole time?" Ben asked, looking over Audrey. Probably noticing the new scars on her arms from fights, the different way she held herself, and the sword in her hand.
"I never went to the spa, I went to the Isle. I'm a part of Uma's crew," Audrey explained. "Where's Mal, Dizzy said she went into the salon?"
"Up there," Evie said. "But Ben couldn't reach her."
Audrey nodded slowly, then turned.
"Come with us, we'll go back to the ship, Uma can talk some sense into Mal."
Exchanging shocked looks, they followed the two as they walked up. Uma immediately looked up, smiling first when she saw Audrey and then her eyes widening when she saw the others.
"Hi Uma," Jay said, and she frowned.
"Where's Mal?"
And then they explained everything, about how Mal ran away, and how everything had become so messed up.
"I'm going to talk to her," Uma decided, standing up. "Audrey, take care of the ship. Harry, follow me."
~Audrey x Uma~
No one knew exactly what Uma told Mal, but when she got back Mal was next to her and smiling.
"So, I heard you're dating my cousin," she said to Audrey, and all their friends' heads snapped up to stare at the two as Audrey blushed a bit.
"I guess, but we're not really using labels," she said, and Mal shrugged.
"Anyways, where's Ben, I have to talk to him," she said, and Jay motioned to a door.
"Go ahead."
~Audrey x Uma~
The two of them came out a bit later, smiling and holding hands.
"So?" Audrey asked, raising an eyebrow.
"We're back on track," Mal said. "And we should go, it's time for Cotillion. You could come, you know. To Auradon."
The girls exchanged looks as they thought about it, then both shook their heads.
"We're needed here," Audrey answered. "Take the barrier down, then we'll talk."
"Take the barrier down?" Mal repeated, her eyes widening.
"Yeah, isn't that what it all was for?" Uma asked, and Ben nodded slowly.
"Girls . . . you just gave me an idea."
~Audrey x Uma~
Cotillion passed uneventfully, but Mal did debut her new hair and dress, which Evie had made for a different event, but thought worked better than the yellow and blue one.
Three months went by, with nothing uneventful happening. But then . . . the day came.
Ben and Mal were engaged. Uma had looked sadly at the television screen and said she wished she could be there.
Turns out she would be there sooner than expected, because at their engagement party Mal and Ben had a big surprise for everyone.
The barrier was coming down.
~Audrey x Uma~
Sunlight flooded in, and the entire crew walked out into the street, along with the other VKs.
"They did it," Uma whispered, sounding shocked.
"Told you they would," Audrey answered, slinging an arm around her girlfriend's shoulders. Yes, girlfriend. Their main reason for not using labels was because on the Isle someone may have heard and figured it out. But now they were free.
"Audrey! Uma!" there was a voice, and Celia and Dizzy crashed into the girls, giving them both huge hugs.
"We're free," Dizzy said breathlessly, and they all turned around, facing the bridge.
It was finally time.
~Audrey x Uma~
They were all talking with their friends and laughing when suddenly a boy's voice shouted, "Addie!"
Audrey spun around and a boy with her brown hair but blue eyes raced into her arms, and she hugged him tightly.
"This must be Phil," Uma said, smiling as she walked forward, a bit nervous. After all, she was finally meeting her girlfriend's brother.
"Yeah," Audrey said, smiling. "Uma, this is my little brother Phil. Phil, this is Uma, my girlfriend."
Phil's eyes widened, and he stared at Uma for a second, but then he smirked.
"I always knew you were lesbian," he said to Audrey, who rolled her eyes a bit, although she was beaming.
"So, I've met your brother, what about the rest of the family?" Uma asked.
"Actually, Mom and Dad called. They're driving over to finally see you again," Phil said, and Uma's eyes widened.
"Relax, no one in the family except the hag is homophobic," Audrey said, rolling her eyes. "But we don't care about her."
Audrey was right, her parents were very accepting and Aurora actually asked Uma if she had anywhere to stay, then offered to let her stay at their palace when she said she didn't.
As her family walked away, Audrey turned to Uma and smiled as she watched all the kids she had grown so attached to run around, happy and finally able to enjoy freedom.
"We did it, didn't we?" Audrey whispered, feeling like this moment was too delicate to ruin by speaking loudly.
"Yeah Princess, we did," Uma answered, and they smiled at each other for a moment. Then Audrey leaned up and caught Uma's lips in a kiss, a kiss that the pirate captain happily returned.
They'd finally done it.
