Rebekah knew that Elena and her friends had found the markings in the cave. There was no way to hide them, but she didn't care about it too much. After checking Stefan's journals and going to school, she decided to call Nik while going back to the boarding house.
"Nik, did you see any ghosts yesterday?"
"Ghosts? Can't say I saw one." Nik was silent for a moment, "Did you?"
"Yes. Mother sent a ghost from the other side to kill Elena. Bennett, who sent her back, needed an opening door so the supernatural on the other side could pass through." Rebekah explained.
"Who did you see?" Nik sounded curious.
"Ayana." she heard his sharp intake of breath, "To put it in a simple way, mother gathered followers and is trying to come back."
"Sounds like her."
"The doppelganger and her friends somehow found the carvings in the cave. I don't know how, but they know, Nik." hearing footsteps behind her, she glanced back to see Elena coming towards her, "I've got to go, the doppelganger is here. I have to keep the phone." with that she cut the call. She quickly kept her phone in her phone and turned to face the doppelbänger.
"What do you want?"
"I was hoping to talk to you."
"About what?"
"About this." Elena held up the same pictures that she had shown Rebekah the first time. "I'm curious why you and Klaus have spent a thousand years running from your father Mikael."
"It's none of your business."
"Well then, maybe I'll ask Mikael when we wake him up."
Rebekah stiffened slightly, but not enough for Elena to notice, "No one knows where he is."
"Then who's rotting in that old cemetery in Charlotte?" Elena retorted.
Rebekah decided to take a different approach than last time. She slammed Elena into the door of her room, and started choking her.
"He's my father. It's my decision to make, sweetheart." she said in a fake sugarsweet voice, and at Elena's look of fear in her eyes, she smirked and tightened her grip on Elena, "Remember I am an original. If I want to, I could rip all of your hearts out in seconds. All of your friends, Boncringe, Caroleech, Damon, Stefan, Matt, Jeremy, Alaric. Dead. And no one could stop that." she glared daggers at doppelbänger, and continued, "If you even try to wake him up, I will kill everyone you love, forcing you to watch, and then I will kill you." she hissed.
She then freed Elena from her grip and acted like nothing had happened, "I have to get back to my work." and with that, she walked out of her room, leaving a dazed Elena in her wake.
Later, at the Salvatore Boarding House, Rebekah had texted her brother to inform him about Elena asking about Mikael. She was pouring herself a drink when the recent Doppelganger entered the room.
"What is it?" she asked the irritating girl.
"We need to talk."
Rebekah rolled her eyes at the command, "About what? Of course, if I may ask." she said sarcastically.
"How you turned into vampires."
"Well then girls, have at it." as soon as she said it a whole runway came out wearing dresses of high costs. Which, of course, didn't even cause a dent in her bank account.
"You compelled your own runway?" Elena asked.
"Which one should I wear for homecoming?"
"I'm not here to do that."
Rebekah sped to a girl and grabbed her hair, exposing her neck as veins started to crawl underneath her eyes, "Pick one, Elena."
"The red one." Elena blurted out in a hurry.
Rebekah smiled before she sped back to where Elena was, "Now, that wasn't so hard, was it?" She waved a hand at the humans and they left as she lifted her champagne glass, "Don't try to threaten me, Elena. I'm faster, stronger and better. I could rip your heart out, and it wouldn't even take a second." she hissed at the fearful brunette.
After Elena nodded, she walked toward Stefan's room, "How fun is this?" she opened Stefan's diary and went to lay on the bed.
"We shouldn't be here…"
"Oh please, who will know? Plus, don't tell me you never wanted to snoop."
"Are you going to spend the rest of the night snooping, or are you going to tell me how you became the world's first vampires?"
"What do you want to know?"
"Well, Elijah told me your father was a wealthy landowner in Europe. How did you guys end up here?"
"My mother was just pregnant with Elijah, when we lost our sister, who was the oldest. I never got to meet her. My parents wanted to escape and protect my future family from the same fate."
"But this part of the world hadn't been discovered yet."
Rebekah laughed, "Not by anyone in your books. My mother took help from the witch, Ayana. Ayana heard from the spirits of a magical land where the people where healthy, - blessed with the gifts of speed, strength and healing- that's what led my family here. Where we lived among the people for twenty blessed years."
"The werewolves?" Elena asked curiously.
"To us, they were just our neighbors. My family lived in peace with them for twenty years, -just like I told you- until something horrible happened." she relived her memories in her mind.
"What?"
"Once a month, on the full moon, our family used to retreat into the caves below our village. The wolves would howl through the night, and we used to return home in the morning, until one day, Nik and our youngest brother crept out to see the men turn. That was forbidden, and our little brother paid the price. One wolf lost control and murdered him. That was the last of our peace with the wolves, and one of the last moments as humans." Rebekah stopped as Elena's phone started ringing, "That will be Damon, checking up on you."
When Elena came back, Rebekah was going through one of Stefan's diaries that she had been searching for, "So, are you going to continue the story?"
Rebekah closed the diary and turned to face her nemesis, "Vampirism was a form of protection. My parents only saw it as a way to keep us alive."
"Yeah, but if they were so afraid, then why not leave?" Elena asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Pride. My father didn't want to run. He wanted us to fight and be superior to the wolves. Where they could bite, we had to bite faster. Where they had speed, we had to be faster. Where they had strength, we had to be stronger...speed, senses, strength, agility, he wanted it all. They asked Ayana for help but she refused, not wanting to have a part in it, -not that I blame her-. Desperate to protect us, father forced mother to call upon black magic in order to give us more strength."
"Black magic?"
"Our mother was a witch." Rebekah tilted her head, "The original witch of the original family."
"But if your mother is a witch, then…" Elena trailed off.
"I am not," Rebekah got up and went to library, "neither is my family. A witch is the servant of nature, and a vampire is the abomination of nature. You can be one or the other, never both. My mother did this to us. But she did not turn."
Elena followed her, "So how did you turn?" the brunette questioned.
"Mother called upon the sun for life, the ancient white oak tree, one of nature's eternal objects, for immortality. That night, we were offered wine laced with blood. And then, our father drove his sword through our hearts." Rebekah winced as she remembered the feeling.
Elena froze, "He killed you?" she whispered in shock.
"He wasn't delicate about it too." she retorted, "It was euphoric, the power, it was indescribable." Rebekah shook her head,
"But Ayana was right, the spirits turned on us, nature fought back. For every strength, there was a weakness. The sun burned us, and it kept us indoors for weeks. Though my mother found a cure for that, there were other things. Neighbors who had opened their doors to us, could keep us out of their homes. The flowers at the base of the white oak tree hurt, and prevented compulsion."
Rebekah made sure to not tell Elena about white oak being able to kill them, "But the darkest consequences were ones my parents never dreamt of. The hunger. The bloodlust. It had made us reborn, and it was blood we craved above all. We couldn't control it. Thus, the predatory species was born."
Elena blinked, dazed by the story, "Why did your father start hunting Klaus?"
"After Nik's first kill, his werewolf gene was triggered. With that, he became my father's greatest shame."
Elena nodded as she spoke, "Elijah told me part of the story. Your mother had a affair with one of the werewolf villagers. Klaus was a out of wedlock child."
"She tried to make it right. She put the hybrid curse on him, and she turned her back on him. But Mikael's greatest weakness as a human was pride." she smiled bitterly.
"He forced Esther to turn him into an original vampire that fed on other vampires. As a vampire, that flaw was magnified. He went on a rampage and killed half the village. Then he came home and killed her." she finished.
"He killed his wife and a mother?!" Elena shook her head in denial.
Rebekah nodded, "He said she broke his heart so he would break hers. He ripped her heart out of her chest as Nik watched. After that, he took off in rage, and my family scattered." she sighed as she thought about how unfair they had treated Finn and Kol.
"Nik stayed so he could help me bury her. He, Elijah and I swore 'Always and Forever'."
"Always and forever, even after he daggered you in a coffin for ninety years?" the doppelbänger asked in disbelief.
"As vampires our emotions are heightened. I am stubborn, Elijah is moral, and Nik… Nik has no tolerance for those who fail him. Over a thousand years, we've all made that mistake, at least once. I've made it several times. But he's my brother and I love him. Our family may be messed up, but at the end of the day, we will always come back to each other." Rebekah turned to her.
"Now it's time to run along. You heard the story. I don't know what game you're playing, but I'm done playing it."
"I'm just looking for a reason to not wake Mikael up."
"And I've given you a thousand!" she exclaimed.
"But you will, no matter what. I'm not stupid. I know you want to kill my brother. And you want him to help."
"It's no secret I want Klaus dead. He has a hold over my life and Stefan's."
"He does. But don't be stupid, if you try to kill him, I will come after you and rip you to shreds. But it is a pity that if we die so do all the vampires in the world." she smirked at the look on the doppelbänger's face.
"Wha-" Elena started but Rebekah cut her off.
"Now go! And I get my temper from my father! Now leave!"
Rebekah was pouring herself her fifth glass of scotch, when Elena Gilbert came back. Rebekah downed the drink before sighing.
"I thought I told you to leave."
"How do you know Mikael killed your mother?" the shadow of Amara asked, ignoring what Rebekah said.
"Nik" she replied simply.
"He lied."
"And how do you know that?" Rebekah raised an eyebrow.
"The cave where you carved your family's names is covered in symbols." she showed her the photos as she spoke, "The story of your family; how you arrived here, how you made peace, the spell that turned you into a vampire. And this. This symbol stands for the hybrid. It's a combination of the vampire and werewolf symbol."
She showed Rebekah another picture, "And this is the one for your mother; the story of her death. The hybrid killed the original witch. Not Mikael. Klaus."
She continued, oblivious to the disbelief on the original's face, "It all makes sense. She put a curse on him, making sure he was the only abomination of his kind, and then she rejected him."
Rebekah took a deep breath to calm herself, and not kill the brunette. After all, her brother needed her to make hybrids.
"How dare this doppelbänger think that I would betray and help kill my brother just because he killed our psycho, neglective mother!"
Rebekah tried to reign her anger in. This girl was the biggest abomination of nature, and she dared to call her brother one!
"With the werewolf gene, comes aggression, bloodlust and violence. When he turned, his emotions were heightened. He killed her, your mother, and then made this lie about your father so you wouldn't leave him."
The blonde closed her eyes for a second, and then grabbed Elena's throat, speeding her to the door, as the brunette tried to escape her iron grip, "Don't you dtailcall my brother an abomination, you little minx. You don't know what this family would do for each other. Be thankful I'm not in the mood to kill. Now get out of here before I change my mind."
Like a coward, Elena ran out with her tail between her legs. Rebekah sighed in distaste at the human, before she opened her phone and dialled a familiar number.
"Hello? Nik? Yeah, it's me. Guess what. I heard from the doppelbänger. They know where Mikael is, they're trying to wake him up, and they tried to manipulate me with the fact that you killed Esther."
