They get up and make their way back down the tower, through the church and back outside where they are greeted by an unfriendly Dr. Reyes who was walking towards them.
"Clint, where were you?" She demands sounding serious and possibly disappointed.
Clint and Rahne take a moment to look at each other trying to think of a good lie quickly. Because Clint knew the last thing Dr. Reyes need to hear was what he tried to commit suicide.
Clint rubs his head, "Um, well I-"
Rahne finishes for him though, "I was just showing him the Chapel!"
Dr. Reyes gives her a disappointing look, "No one is ever to be unaccounted for Rahne, you know that!"
Rahne looked down, "I'm sorry Dr. Reyes!"
She sighs nodding at the two of them before walking off. Clint wishes the doc wasn't so hard on Rahne, but she doesn't seem to bothered by it.
"Did I just get you a night alone in the dog house?" Clint asks feeling bad about his new friend.
Rahne just shook her head, "Don't worry about it it's okay she likes me I'm one of the good ones here, me and Sam!" Who speaking of which was only a few yards away on the basketball court with some kind of harness strapped to his chest.
Clint noticed the guy had some sort of bungee cable he just locked onto the harness. What happened next blew his mind not literally of course but pretty close to it.
Sam's body started making a vibrating sound before starting to actually vibrate and gave a purplish pinkish glow that started to engulf his body before he blasted off like a bullet out of a gun.
Clint looked in awe as he saw Sam now going as some sort of sonic speed round and round in circles with a energy stream following behind him.
"Holy shit I thought he just exploded, but damn that's awesome!" Clint said in amazement of the mutant's power.
Rahne chuckled almost as if she was expect Clint's reaction, "Yeah that's his ability, he can blast off zero to a hundred like a cannonball!"
They could hear Sam's grunts and groans as he hit the ground a few times. "He's not so good at landing though!" Rahne noted.
Even Clint had to admit what Sam was doing looked like it had to hurt. "So what is this like practice for him or something?" He asked out of sheer curiosity.
Rahne gave a puzzled look in return seeming unsure herself, "I don't know, sometimes he seems like he's out her just trying to hurt himself!"
The two of them just walked back on to the main building again they stayed quiet for the most part until after they entered the building Clint's stomach made a very loud growling sound. Putting a hand to his stomach, "Sorry you had to hear that, you don't happen to know where the chow in this place is do you?"
Rahne just nodded, "Sure just follow me I'll show you where the cafeteria is, I was about to get some food myself actually?"
She lead he followed until they came to a regular sized cafeteria that was empty for the most part except for the girl Danielle Moonstar who was sitting alone at her own table eating her food, a few tables over was the bane of this place from earlier Illyana who was drawing on her pants or something. Clint wondered if there was a single thing about that girl was sane and sound. And over behind the cafeteria kitchen counter wearing a apron and yellow rubber gloves was Roberto.
HUNGRY!!! The voice said excitedly for a change.
At this point Clint wasn't scared or jumpy anymore at the surprise scream in his head that only he could hear. He and Rahne grabbed a tray and she seemed a little curious about why Clint stocked up so much she figured he must have a big appetite she guessed otherwise he wouldn't be so toned in shape. Rahne wonders there those stray thought came from as she tried to stop a blush from forming on her face.
Clint couldn't help but ask, "Hey do you mind if I eat with you because he hasn't gotten on my good side yet!" Pointing at Roberto, "She's a cranky bitch and psychopath who is already on my naughty list!" moving his finger to Illyana, "And she and I haven't been formally introduced yet so I don't think it would be appropriate for me to just pop a squat over there by her, beside she looks conflicted and believe me I know I've seen that look before!" Gesturing over to Danielle.
Rahne giggled a little bit at Clint's sense of humor she for sure was really starting to enjoy being around him. "Sure over here." They sat down facing each other on either side of the table.
Clint particularly didn't take a liking to the hospital food but he figured it was better than nothing he couldn't exactly go to the phone and order pizza or anything.
Rahne was too busy eating her own food to notice that Clint's eyes filled up with pitch black and a few little white veins off to the sides.
Clint suddenly felt more hungry and really picked up the pace in eating his food as if he just traded his full stomach with someone else's empty one.
He finished quickly and slammed down his water in one gulp before his eyes returned to their normal color. And just in time too as Rahne finally noticed the display of hunger and thirst she just bared witness to. Clint let out a deep burp quickly covering his mouth slightly embarrassed.
"Excuse me, sorry!" He apologized he may be hungry but he hasn't forgotten his manners especially in front of a lady.
Rahne looked at him in wonder, "You must've really been starved!"
Clint just chuckled, "You don't know the half of it!"
He was about to go dump his tray when he thought about giving social interaction another go especially after the failed attempt on Illyana earlier today. Clint straightened himself out.
"So I don't believe we were formally introduced yet despite the situation I met you in!" Rahne gave a little chuckle, "I'm Clint Fincham, 17 years old and currently residing in Hospital Hell!" He put out his hand for her to shake.
Rahne couldn't help but giggle at his enthusiasm to want to get to know her, but she thinks she'll go along and shook his hand. "I'm Rahne Sinclair, I'm also 17 and also in the cuckoo house." She replied.
Clint laughed for her attempt a humor it was nice actually. He figured it was okay to keep going for now. "So where are you from, before this place that is?" He asked.
Rahne really wasn't use to making conversation with others she was usually shy and distant by nature. But for some reason she found it so easy about opening herself up to Clint.
"Scotland obviously, if you can tell by my wee accent!" Rahne answered simply.
"But where exactly from Scotland I mean did your parents send you here to get better or something?" Clint asked more seriously this time.
Rahne's face fell a little bit more into a sad look. Staring at her tray trying to figure out how to answer.
Clint noticed immediately hoping that he wasn't making her uncomfortable, "I-I'm sorry I wasn't trying to be rude or get too personal or anything I just-"
"No no it's fine I'm just not use to people asking questions about me!" Rahne stopped him.
She brushed her short hair back before proceeding to answer, "I'm from Ullapool it's a small town in the northern highlands," she explained, Clint listening intently. She took a moment before going deeper into her past. "My Mum she…was a local wench, here I think you call her a hooker she…..died giving birth to me." Rahne's voice was now filled with loneliness and sadness. Despite the fact that her Mom was a prostitute, still she was her mother.
Clint felt sorry for her he can feel the depression coming off of her in waves. "I'm sorry Rahne!" He says with as much sympathy as possible. Rahne looks at him with appreciation for her misfortune. "I was taken in by the town's local priest….Reverend Craig."
The name she mentioned from earlier Clint remembered she said that when her mutation first activated that she showed him and abused her and labeled her a…..witch! Clint feels the anger rising within him as he instinctively clenches his fist. What kind of a man, especially a man of God at that tries to kill their own daughter.
Rahne continued, "He raised me as his own child until…I got my powers and changed for the first time like I said earlier and you know the rest of that story!" Clint nodded.
"Shortly after I was declared a witch the townspeople drove me into exile where I stayed for many years then a few months ago I was captured by my guess, and woke up here where Dr. Reyes told me about what I am and why I need to be here!" She finished.
Wow! Clint is really trying to digest that and he thought his origin story was messed up his heart really went out to the poor girl.
To make sure she knew that he knows her pain of what it's like to lose your family. "I'm from New York City!" Clint put out there. Rahne's gaze was back on him. He listened to her only fair that she listens to him.
Clint saw that she was invested in what he had to say so he went on, "My Dad died when I was 3, I don't even have a vivid memory of him besides of what he looks like thanks to the picture of him that my mom kept!"
Clint took a breath "My Mom died several months ago in a bad car crash she made it to the hospital but the doctors said it was only a matter of time since her injuries were fatal at least I got to say goodbye to her one last time before….." he choked. Looking down shaking.
Rahne never knew what her Mother was like but she didn't have to watch her die, she desperately wished to comfort him. "I can still feel her hand in mine and how I felt the life go out of her as it happened and all I could do was sit there and watch!" Clint started to form tears in his eyes, but he refused to let himself cry as much as he wanted to he refused to show any sign of weakness.
Rahne could feel the pain and shame in his voice as it began to break down she could tell he was trying to be strong and not let her see it. But she wished that he did, that Clint would allow himself to fall apart. That she could give him a comforting hug and let him cry on her shoulder know that she'd be there holding him together. Unfortunately she barely knew him still instead she reached across the table and slipped her hand in his giving it a comforting squeeze as reassurance that she would be there for him.
Clint noticed and looked at her, her emerald iris's gazing into his watery blue ones. The feeling of her hand in his bring back that missing feeling of warmth that he had been longing for. He just gave her a nod, "Thank you Rahne!" He said gently but no less sincerely.
Rahne returned the gesture before retracting her hand. "You know if you ever need to talk to anyone I'll be here for you!" She offers kindly.
Clint just smiled, "Yeah I'd like that very much, and same goes for you, look I'm not really a man of faith other than this," gesturing to his cross necklace he holds up for her. "But I do know that regardless of your adopted, no father should ever abuse their own kids that a true parent loves them unconditionally mutant, witch or whatever so if it ever get to you too much one just holler my name and I'll be there for you faster than a lighting bolt strikes!"
Rahne gave him a caring smile, "Thank you, Clint not many other would make that kind of offer!"
With that the two of them gather their trays and start walking taking notice that Sam who has a few bruises came in at some point reading. And the others are just hanging around. A thought comes to mind since he's on a hot streak right now with getting to know Rahne maybe Clint figures he should just ask her what's the story behind the others.
Clint quietly asked her, "Hey Rahne if you don't mind me asking since your the only one on the welcoming committee today could tell me what's everyone else's story is?"
Rahne gets why he's hesitant to ask them she's been there she agrees to spare him the frustration. "Sure well first off their's Dani!" Looking to the young Native American girl. "She arrived not long before you but she's been out of it mostly since she's in here, probably because her entire reservation she destroyed by a tornado she was the only survivor!" Clint looks at Dani wondering how she coped with that losing everything all in one fell swoop.
They continued walking along, their attention turned towards Sam who was reading a book from the looks of it. "Sam was the previous arrival before her, he grew up in a small town in Kentucky, he did really well in school but sadly he had to drop out to work in the mines with his dad, to help the family and all!" Clint looks at Sam casually, "poor guy that's tough!" Clint whispered. "Right? Poor guy indeed!" Rahne commented.
They made their way to the kitchen counter where Roberto was still scrubbing and washing dishes now listening to music on his headphones that weren't there before. "And then there's Roberto, his family is like the richest family in Brazil!" Rahne explained before the two of them set their trays on the counter for him to take. Roberto said something in which Clint could only guess was Portuguese his native language. Before looking to Rahne.
"Thanks, Doggy!" Rahne shook her head.
They both turned to leave with Clint glancing back a few times. "He was probably living the sweet life before he got here, something must've gone really wrong!" Rahne guessed. Clint chuckled, "Well at least that explains the inflated ego and shitty attitude to go with it!" That earns him a small laugh from Rahne who agrees. "Well what's his power?" Clint asks quietly. Rahne just shrugged, "He won't tell but he's got something, his parents sent him here to be cured."
Clint gave a small laugh to himself, "Is there a cure for being a spoiled rich prick?" Obviously rhetorical.
Clint just shrugged, "Maybe he's just the crazy one."
Rahne shook her head looking at Clint more seriously, "No that spot's already been taken!" She says cautiously looking past him at Illyana who was still drawing on her pants leg.
Clint looked at her with wide eyes. Before turning back to Rahne, "Honestly after everything I've seen from that girl today I don't even wanna know what her power is!" He whispers as they exit the cafeteria unknown to them that Illyana's gaze followed.
Night has already fallen outside, Clint and Rahne are walking along the long stretch of hallway to Clint's room.
He forgot about one more question the redhead next to him, "I hope you don't mind me asking but what's your power and you don't need to show me I just want to know please?"
Rahne was kinda expecting that she had been asked so many questions today it's sort of funny that he forgot the most obvious one.
"Well I can turn into a wolf!" Rahne hesitated she hasn't really adjusted to her mutation other than the benefits but accepting it entirely in the face of others was something she had yet to come to terms with.
Clint's face was full of amazement, "Really wow that's so cool you turn into a werewolf!"
"No not a werewolf just a actual wolf, sometimes I'm able to change halfway between my human and Lycian form but I mostly just turn in to a wolf with red fur!" She admits. Surprised at his reaction most people would look at her is terror or disgust as if she was a actual witch or demon from hell and everyone else here with the exception of Dani, Sam, and Dr. Reyes that is would just tease her and make jokes about what she is.
But not Clint though for the first time she felt that maybe she didn't have to hide herself away from everyone.
They finally arrive at Clint's room and enter him first and Rahne following behind. There is a moment of awkward silence between them before Rahne decides to speak.
"I really enjoyed spending the day with you Clint, but I should go, we're not suppose to be in each other's rooms and.." she turns to leave.
Clint doesn't mean to interrupt but there is just always one more question to ask, "Why is she always watching us?" Refers to Dr. Reyes.
Rahne faces him to answer, "For our own good, she means well she's just trying to help us!"
"If you follow the treatment you'll get out of her Clint!" She advises before opening the door to leave, "probably before the rest of us cuckoos!" She jokes.
Clint and Rahne take a moment of silence to just take in the presence of each other one last time for the day.
"Well night!" Rahne says and leaves just like that.
It doesn't take long for Clint to want to give her one more thanks, "Rahne!" He calls out.
She's only a few feet away for his room by the time she hears Clint's voice calling after her. She turns to see him standing in the doorway looking unsure of what he wants to say to her.
Clint pauses for a moment leaning against the door frame, "Thank you for helping me!"
Rahne just smirks, "What do I know? maybe we both should have jumped!" She smiles warmly at him one last time before returning to walk back down the hall and out of sight.
Clint shuts the door and then proceeds to sit down on his bed taking in the day. Needless to say he already knows what the best part is, unfortunately a irritating devil in his head says it for him.
Rahne!
"What?" Clint asks the voice for once he was so focused on the time he spent with Rahne that he didn't catch what the voice said to him.
"What do you say?" Clint asks once again.
I said in the time you spent today with that girl Rahne, your heart rate has increased and hormone levels have elevated. It explains.
Clint gives a careless laugh, "So what I enjoyed making a new friend of course I would be on an emotional high because there is finally one person in this asylum that isn't so bad and more importantly it's someone that I can relate to on so many depressing levels. Even you have to admit that she's better than crazy town Illyana!"
Believe or not the voice had to admit that he was right the blonde one was too unpredictable and an alpha bitch.
Fine I admit it I was possibly starting to like her almost as much as I am starting to like you Clint! The voice says defeated.
Clint takes a moment to figure out what it meant by that sounding as if this thing referred to itself as a different and separate person or something. "Wait a minute that's another thing you said earlier that you would give me some answers one you got some food and all that shit!"
He pauses realizing going back to earlier at lunch with Rahne feeling as full as can be one moment and then goes to feeling utterly starved to death he did say it felt like it was someone else's stomach because maybe it was someone else's stomach or somethings stomach.
Clint puts two and two together. "It was you, you were the one that gave me that appetite rush earlier today at lunch.
Yes I did that, not as good as brains but it'll do!
Clint is in complete disbelief, "No no no if that was you then why do I remember it?" he asks confused.
The voice sighs or at least to Clint was sounds like a sigh, Because there are some moments when I can take control of you and others when I can't or some where we both have a hand on the wheel. Today at lunch you were in control but all I did was overlap my digestive system with yours so technically even though you ate the food I'm the one who digested it, got it!
Clint was both in fight and in awe of what was happening to him. But he decided not to pursue this any further and just go to bed and continue that countdown to insanity tomorrow.
