The rest of the night was slow and uneasy for everyone especially Dani and Clint who didn't get much sleep Dani due to the nightmare that seemed well real and Clint ended up in another cell due to his inhumanly display of strength knocking his cell door off like tin foil.
Clint was already on his way to see Dr. Reyes who wanted to run some more tests then again why wouldn't she after what she saw and he saw last night he understood all to well.
Dr. Reyes was in the infirmary doing some bloodwork with Dani who was sitting up on the hospital bed holding her arm that just got blood drawn out of.
"Hey doc I'm here!" Clint announced.
"Good morning Clint I'm just finishing up with Dani I'll be with you in a minute!" Dr. Reyes replied.
Clint just leaned up against the doorway watching carelessly to pass the time. Then he heard Dr. Reyes give Dani the okay to go hopping off the bed with her arm all bandaged up.
Clint couldn't help but ask as she's passing, "Hey, how are ya holding up?" Sounding concerned.
Dani stopped for a moment to give him a warm smile considering how he cared for her well being.
"Better I just need to keep taking it slowly that's all, but thanks!" Walking down the hall and out of sight.
Clint watched her go before turning back to Dr. Reyes who was rearranging a few things. "I'm ready for you Clint come on in!"
Clint just does as he's told and takes a seat up on the bed slightly laying back.
Dr. Reyes takes a wipe and band wrapping it around his arm getting the needle ready and a tube. With barely even so much as a pinch the blood started pouring into the tube.
"Like Dani you're clearly manifesting something Clint just need to run a few more tests to figure out what it is, it's okay I'm a doctor actually I come from a family of doctors, my mother was a veterinarian!" Dr. Reyes explained.
Clint just sat there listening intently. Needless to say he knew what was happening to him already and the secret fact that aliens are real and that one is literally inside or as the term that wait what did he call himself 'Venom' that Venom used 'bonded' yeah an alien that is bonded to him. Clint didn't really give it to much thought though he may not be a mutant but he's something different.
"Dr. Reyes sorry to interrupt your little family legacy, but I need to ask you something?" His tone clearly conflicted.
Reyes nods urging him to continue. "Sure what is it Clint?"
Clint takes a breath before continuing on, "Have you only ever dealt with mutants like is there only just mutants in the world that can gain powers and special abilities or have you dealt with….others?" Clearly sounding hesitant.
Dr. Reyes look at the boy curiously wondering where this suddenly came from but nevertheless she answers the question, "No! Not really to my knowledge or anything I'm aware of, why do you ask Clint?" Clint just looks at her dumbfounded by the returning question he actually wasn't expecting that.
"W-well it just was a thought that came to me if mutants actually exist and can develop their own powers and abilities it kinda makes you wonder what else is out there, if there's anything else that might be similar to mutants or different that's all!" Clint answers throughly hoping to sell that bullshit. But it was partially right.
"I get it Clint I really do a few days ago you were just like the majority of everyone else on the planet but then you become part of another world the world of mutants and everything changes and the question of whether or not there are other things in the world besides you that exist can be common!" Dr. Reyes does her best to relate to his sudden interest in the unknown.
Clint quickly tries to change the subject before she starts getting suspicious of him or something, "So you said your mom as a career vet right?" He asks enthusiastically.
Dr. Reyes smiles at that, "Yes, a lot of pets at her clinic came in with mostly rattlesnake bites though, did you know that baby rattlesnakes are more dangerous than adult ones?" She asks.
"Really?" Sounding serious.
Dr. Reyes nods before continuing this little lesson, "Uh huh, They don't know how to control how much venom they secrete, so even the mutants that we call heroes today chances are when they first got their powers that they hurt someone, that's why new mutants are dangerous and they need to be-"
"Locked up!" Clint says cutting her off.
Dr. Reyes looks sympathetic for a moment before finishing what she has to say, "Sequestered! From average humans for their safety and our own, put pressure here." Clint follows and presses down tight on his arm as Dr. Reyes puts a bandage over the needle incision.
Dani is back in her room done with tests for today and is just relaxing in her own room for the rest of the day. Still she replays that memory of what she saw and can still visualize those red eyes that looked almost….demonic.
Outside on the path Rahne is heading over to the church for her own self confession since there's no actual priest but still the Scottish girl remains true to her faith and beliefs. The aisles are empty as are the seats and Rahne heads right for the confessional. She opens the door on the far right closing it behind her as she steps inside.
"Forgive me father for I have sinned. It's been a week since my last confession!" Rahne says to the empty room in front of her.
Back in the infirmary Clint is still on the bed finishing up his bloodwork with Dr. Reyes who continues to babble on at least in Clint's mind.
"My superior runs a facility for gifted mutants, you could be transferred there after this if you wanted to that is Clint." Dr. Reyes says staring at her clipboard writing something down not making eye contact with him.
"Well Rahne said that I could get out of here faster if I follow your program that is." Clint utters out quietly.
This of course grabs Reyes' attention who looks at Clint with a semi happy expression, "I've seen that you and Rahne have taken a liking to each other, that's good!" She compliments.
Clint shrugs looking away trying to hide a faint blush from the woman. "Yeah well she's a very sweet girl, really helping to sell your sales pitch!" He admits more to himself than Dr. Reyes actually.
"She's a good influence! And she's right. It's important we find out exactly what your power is so we can help you control it!" Dr. Reyes takes the tubes of blood and puts them into a suitcase before sealing it shut.
Clint sits up and swings his legs to the edge hanging off of the hospital bed, "So is that all the tests for today?" He asks.
Dr. Reyes shakes her head gathering the suitcase and a few other things looking back at him, "No, there's only one more test I'd like to try with you for today a MRI Scan and then that's it so if you'll follow me to the scanning room we'll get that done and that's it's for today!" Waving her hand for him to follow. Clint hops off the bed tailing behind her.
While back at the church Rahne is continuing with her weekly confession. "I masturbated twice. I lied to Dr. Reyes also I was up in the vents again!" She says aimlessly but sincerely. But she's cut short but the small sound of something going on outside she looks out the glass less window, "Hello?" But there's no response. Fear is starting to creep into her turning back to quickly finish her confession.
"I'm gonna say one Our Father and two Hail Mary's, okay!" She says quickly, her hand flies to open the door only to see the middle door to the confessional start to creek open slowly but sees no one on the other side.
"Hello?" She calls out again her breathing becoming more rapid.
The door closes another moment of silence passes by before Rahne hesitantly speaks, "Who's there?"
The sound of what seems like a ghostly whisper answers back with only one word.
"Witch!"
Rahne is now overwhelmed with terror opening the door running out of the confessional slamming the door shut behind her. Only getting a few feet away before hearing the voice of the late Reverend Craig calling out to her.
"You witch! I'll flay the flesh from your bones!" He calls out, when the doors start to slam open and shut on their own. Rahne is completely terrified she turns on her heel and runs out of the church as fast as she can and out to the graveyard when she gets down on all fours bringing her face mere inches away from the grass. "Demons can't come in churches, demons can come in churches, demons can't come in churches!!" Rahne repeats her religious mantra over and over again grasping onto her necklace taking in deep breaths trying not to hyperventilate. She sits up allowing herself to get some air into her lungs looking back at the church getting to her feet before walking back to the main building she knows she going to be in her room for a while after this.
Back in one of the lower rooms with a bunch of medical equipment and a huge white MRI Scanner. Clint is in the same grey hospital gown that he found himself in when he first woke up here only this time he got into it voluntarily. Dr. Reyes was getting the computers all set up and online.
"Okay Clint if you'll just step inside and lie down we can begin!" Dr. Reyes said opening the glass doors to the other side of the room, he steps in and lays down the machine sliding him in with the doors closing.
"Clint now I need you to relax and it'll be painless and quick, and here we go!" Dr. Reyes says over the microphone starting up the machine.
Clint just does as she says and hears the whirring and buzzing of the MRI beginning. Suddenly a loud piercing screech of the machine sends Clint's body into a frenzy as it's too loud he's thrashing and yelling as small bits of black cover his face like veins sticking out. God does it hurt his voice sounds partly distorted.
Dr. Reyes quickly notices seeing the lower half of the boy's body shaking violently. The computer screens start glitching out hearing his yells turn to screams. Reyes gets out of her chair and hits the emergency shutdown. Opening the doors running to Clint's side.
The sound returns to normal volume as well as the small black veins on Clint's face return to normal he's panting heavily as the machine slides him back out, Dr. Reyes helps him sit up as his eyes are glued to the ground still coming back down to earth.
"Are you okay Clint?" Dr. Reyes asks very concerned after the berserk display she saw a moment ago.
Clint takes a few moments to gather himself up before answering the doc who rubs a soothing hand in circles across his back.
"Y-yeah I don't know what happened it was just really really loud I mean I'll admit I'll always been the kind of guy that's sensitive to loud noise but this was something else, but yeah I'm good!" Clint responds talking more to himself than her.
Dr. Reyes seems only half convinced he is alright but this was a new reaction compared to her former patients so she decided to dissuade it for now.
"Okay well I got what I need but I would like you to take it easy for the rest of the day okay Clint!" She says making sure he's listening, Clint just gives a thumbs up in response before exiting the room getting dressed back into a pair of jeans and a black t-shirt exiting the room.
Clint is strolling down the hall once he's sure he's far enough away for anyone around to possibly hear his face becomes contorted with rage, "What the hell happened to me back there that really really hurt you know!" Clint quietly complains to Venom who Clint hopes is paying attention.
I did not know what an MRI was so now I know for the future not to let you get in one! Venom says in his defense.
Clint just rolls his eyes at that, "You still didn't answer the question what the hell happened?" Clint asked more demandingly this time.
Sound at 4 to 6 thousand hertz is very lethal to me! Venom answers.
Clint just throws his hands up before letting them drop back to his sides in a huff. "And let me guess what hurts you hurts me now, correct?"
Yes!
"Oh well that's good to know!" Clint says sarcastically. He's heading back to his room before the sound of his stomach churning and growling grabs his attention and Venom's as well.
Let's get some food I'm hungry! Venom complains.
Clint just sighs, "Yeah well that makes two of us!" With that being said Clint changes directions and heads for the cafeteria.
A few hours later after some lunch and just lounging around Clint couldn't find Rahne anywhere the only place he hadn't looked was the only place he hadn't been to before her room.
Clint stops right outside her door before he knocks a few times and almost immediately the door opens and Rahne is standing there wearing a black sweater with thin yellow stripes going across that was obviously two sizes too big for her. She gives him a shy smile which he returns.
"Hey!" He says lightly.
"Hey!" She replies back barely above a whisper.
Clint notices Rahne's expression turn back to a more spooked expression. This of course makes him more on edge guessing that something happened. "Where have you been all day I couldn't find you anywhere?" He asks.
A few moments pass by but Rahne just stares at Clint as if she's looking at a ghost or something. Clint takes a step forward his face now filled with worry and concern for the girl.
"Are you okay?" He asks softly.
After another moment Rahne finally responds, "Yeah, I just needed some time to myself." She hesitantly says but sincerity clear in her tone that she's not lying.
Before Clint can ask any further he notices out of the corner of his left eye that Illyana, Sam, Dani, and Roberto are heading somewhere. Given the time it currently is and the curfew this place has he can't help but wonder what the hell their up to now passing by him and Rahne.
"Come on!" Illyana urges the other three trailing behind her. Clint's eyes follow as they brush by him slightly.
"Where are you guys going?" Clint asks curiously. They stop in their tracks and turn to acknowledge him.
Roberto is the first to speak, "Reyes is taking a snooze so we're going up to the…" before he can finish Illyana walks up to Roberto cutting him off. "To the 'never mind, you're not invited." Illyana says annoyingly looking to Clint.
What the feisty blondes problem is Clint will never know.
Sam however the Kentucky fried friend is more than happy to answer him, nudging Illyana back, "Come on Illy, tag along well show you!" he answers.
Illyana let's out a huff in defeat, "Whatever!" She carelessly says before turning back down the hall.
Clint looks back to Rahne giving her a looks that says what's on his mind knowing if she's coming too. Rahne just smiles giving a slight nod and the two follow after the others in tow.
They go through a few corridors and up a few stack of stairs ending up in what Clint can only presume is the attic to this place. He can't see anything but black. Then he sees a small light shine up the room. Clint takes a minute to see this place and notices a few cobwebs off to the side and a bunch of old couches and chairs and other furniture. On the brick wall he sees a message in black spray paint from the looks of it.
It reads, 'The Youth are Sick and there is No Cure!'
Clint takes a moment to figure out what it means but shrugs to himself, deciding he's better off not knowing. Before walking over to a single chair right next to Rahne because he felt the most comfortable around her.
Clint let's out a small whistle sitting down. "So, let me get this straight you guys hang out in an attic?" Sounding baffled.
"Yeah, it's one of the only places Reyes can't watch us." Sam responds taking a seat on a small stool to Clint's right.
"It's full of cool shit from back before this was even a place for mutants." Roberto adds walking over to take a seat on the couch.
Clint turns to see Illyana in her black leather jacket and a suitcase in her hand setting it down on the ground to reveal what looks like some sort of polygraph. Clint does watch tv so he's not an idiot.
"Let's play a little game." Illyana announces taking of her jacket.
"Berto your up first!" Illyana says pointing a the Brazilian boy who got up and walked over to what looks like a first generation wheelchair primarily made of wood and thin wheels. Roberto sat down and Illyana strapped him to a whole bunch of cords.
When she's done she stomps over to a headlamp and turns it so it's right in Roberto's face. The light blinds him for a moment turning his head away before his eyes adjust turning back again.
Clint sees Rahne sit right in front of the machine turning it on.
Silence fills the room and Clint watches intently.
"Dare!" Roberto blurts out breaking the silence.
Illyana rolls her eyes sitting down in her own chair, "You can't say dare!" She explains not looking at him.
Roberto groans, "Fine, Truth!"
Illyana turns away for a moment, the rest of them wait for someone to ask a question. Clint is starting to think maybe he should just go back to his room otherwise he'd die of boredom.
Luckily Sam pops the silence and the question, "How many girls have you been with?" He asks.
Clint is suddenly rejuvenated and thinks that's a good question he'd seen the way Roberto was and he was cocky, confident, and a womanizer if anything regardless that he fails spectacularly but that doesn't stop him though.
Roberto scoffs a laugh his face breaks out into a smile, "Like I can even remember!" He answers.
Clint hears a little beep from the polygraph as the need goes wild scribbling back and forth indicating that he's obviously lying. That brings a small smirk to Clint's face.
"Rahne?" Illyana asks.
Rahne looks at her with the same smirk shaking her head that implying that Roberto's not telling the truth.
"He's lying, it's a lie detector we know." Illyana explains.
Roberto looks at her letting about a small grunt of defeat, "Fine, Three!" he says.
Clint nods to the side as a hopeless romantic himself even he has to admit that's impressive.
Sam agrees as well, "That's not bad!"
The polygraph needle goes wild once again giving it away that Roberto is still lying.
Damn! Clint thinks to himself it's that bad for him.
"No luck, I told you!" Illyana says with a satasfied smirk on her face looking at Roberto.
"Seriously?" Sam asks.
"Well not all of us have what it takes to get the girl don't beat yourself up about it buddy!" Clint advises Roberto who glares slightly at him.
"Why not?" Dani asks Roberto sitting on the table next to Sam.
Roberto sighs, "I get too hot!" He admits truthfully.
This causes Sam to laugh a little.
Roberto looks at him insulted, "Yeah, you think it's funny? Your turn then asshole!" He growls, unstrapping the cords rather roughly getting out of the seat.
Sam looks down for a moment before getting up and taking a seat in the wheelchair. Rahne gets up and straps him in and sits back down. Although she can't help but notice that he's gripping onto a small lump of coal.
"What's the coal for?" Rahne asks curiously.
Sam looks at the piece of coal himself taking a breath before answering her. "My dad gave it to me, right before….he passed." Sam said hesitantly with a slight shudder in his voice.
Dani's face turned to one of sympathy, her heart going out to the poor guy. "I'm sorry!" She says softly.
Sam gives Dani a look that shows he appreciates her sympathy. "Don't be, I belong he so…" Sam tells her.
Dani takes a moment to think about that, "I'm not sure any of us belong here." She says sternly.
"I think I do!" Sam argues.
Dani looks at him incredulously, "Why?"
Before Sam can answer Illyana pipes up as usual. "New girl, he already had his question."
Illyana readjusts herself in her chair, "It's your turn." She says to Dani who looks confused.
"Aren't you gonna hook me up?" Dani asks seriously.
Illyana just gives her usual sadistic smirk at the young Native American. "I don't need a polygraph to tell if you're lying."
"What's your power?" Illyana wonders flatly monotone.
Dani is silent before she whispering, "I don't know!"
Illyana seems satisfied again like this is all some game to her, "I thought you were going to say that. So how about another question, what's with the stupid bear?"
Dani gives a small glare at the Russian before grabbing her necklace, "Same as Sam, my dad made it for me." She answers earning a scoff from Illyana.
Rahne looks at Dani once again curious,"Why?" She asks.
Dani shrugs for a moment, "When I was little I was…I was really afraid of the dark, like so afraid it was impossible to get me to go to sleep." Dani explains as others around the room Clint who leaned forward with his hands on his knees and Roberto and Sam both listening intently as well. Even Venom who unbeknownst to Clint was also listening.
"So my dad he told me a legend of a bear…a demon bear, that lives inside of all of us and feeds off of our fear!" Dani continued.
Roberto chuckled, "Yeah that'll help a kid sleep!"
Rahne gave him a annoyed look, "Shut up Berto!"
"So when you're born the bear is tiny and weak, and the older you get the more afraid we become the bigger and stronger the bear gets!"
Clint who is listening to the story looked away for a moment thinking to himself and how something morally relates to him and what he's gone through very recently. But he's brought out of his thoughts as Dani continues the story.
"My dad he…he made this for me so that I would always remember how small it was when I was born. So that I would remember to never be afraid."
As Dani finished the story Clint couldn't help but smile at the message that her father was trying to teach her.
"Sounds your your old man had some good advice I respect that!" Clint comments. Dani gives him an appreciative smile.
Illyana of course is revolted by all this mushy stuff and decides to break the ice. "What about you new guy, hmm what's your power?" She asks Clint who knew that was coming.
"Let me guess you don't need that little gizmo to tell if I have my fingers crossed either do ya!" Clint says amused, pointing his thumb over to the polygraph.
Illyana smirks playfully, "No, I don't I could just tell by the little protective and rebellious juvenile delinquent attitude that you have nothing to hide, at least nothing that I want to know that is!"
Clint chuckles to himself, "You'd be surprised how well I am at keeping secrets blondie!"
Clint raises his hand before letting them fall back into his lap, "So what's the question for tonight, I'll take the cold ruskie for 300!" Pointing at Illyana who masks the small glare.
"I would ask you what you power is but I already saw you use it last night it's impressive for a boy, there aren't many thing that my sword can't cut through!" Illyana says. Clint is surprised she actually is giving him a complement.
"So how did you end up here and I don't mean how you got here obviously but what did you do to get locked up here?" Illyana demands.
Clint just stares right back at her, "That's none of your damn business!"
Illyana giggles wickedly, "Oh! Tough guy huh, must've been pretty serious for you to be so on edge, okay how about the bling on your neck are you a religious fanatic too like the dog?" Illyana asks gesturing at Clint's cross and then over to Rahne who gives her an irritated look she can't count the number of times she's told Illyana not to call her 'dog' or 'doggie'.
Clint grabs his silver and gold cross and opens his mouth to speak but is interrupted by the blonde, "Wait let me guess daddy gave it to you, just like them!" Pointing to Dani and Sam.
Clint makes a close sign with his fingers, "Actually it was mommy but close though and A for trying!" Clint enthusiastically says to her sitting back in her chair.
Clint's expression turns serious again before looking down, "My mom gave it to me when I was little, she was very religious and devoted despite the bad things that happened in her life. I wasn't exactly dealt a good hand and to a certain extent she wasn't either I tried not to let it get to me for the majority of my living hell, then one day when I came home after an incident at school I just exploded went off about how I hated my life and how it always seemed like bad thing happen to good people, and good things happen to bad people. The next morning she gave me this!" Clint laid out, slightly jerking the necklace in his hand.
Rahne was listening more closely than the others were a part from her being a woman of faith, and the other being because she had gotten really close to Clint he was different from the others in a way that made her feel happy for the first time in a long while.
"At first I thought she was punishing me because of how I blamed God for my life turning out the way it did, but then she explained to me that it was a reminder. She told me that it isn't God's job to remove the evil and darkness from the world, he's there to help us find our faith when we lose it, that it isn't about getting rid of the darkness out in the world….it's about accepting it. Accepting that bad things will always happen to us for no reason and for him to be there to give us the hope, faith, and strength to get through it to help us rise when we fall. And in the end it's not about what you do it's about what you believe." Clint finished with a small tear trickling down the left side of his face that Clint tried to hide from the others.
Clint turned and noticed Rahne smiling sweetly at him the two gazing at each other for a long time it felt like. Clearly she found the story to be heartfelt Rahne wishes she could've met Clint's mother.
Illyana takes notice and gets up, "Enough!" She states bluntly.
She walks over to Sam and signals for him to get up, "Let's do this!"
Sam obliges and Rahne gets up to strap Illyana in. "Well come on."
Illyana sits down in the chair, "Truth!"
Dani gives her a sassy look, "Why are you here?" She asks.
Illyana smirks relaxing into the wheelchair, "Because I killed eighteen men one by one! With my sword and Lockheed!" She says gleefully almost proudly.
Rahne looks shocked looking down at the polygraph and seeing the needle barely moving meaning either this girl knows how to control her pulse and heart rate or she's actually telling the truth she seems shocked and Clint does too feeling a slight chill running up his spine at seeing her reaction honestly he might consider the girl a psychopath after this.
Meanwhile in the control room a video screen live feed is showing the attic footage currently playing zooming out to show Dr. Reyes still awake and watching the mutants naturally.
"You're lying!" Dani says over the monitor.
"No she's not!" Sam adds.
"You don't believe me, I'm the most powerful mutant here!" Illyana argues.
Dr. Reyes just watches as she observes the interactions carefully seeing no differences or spikes tonight but tomorrow is another story.
