Chapter 7
The following day the four boys were up at five am for their performance. Even though they weren't scheduled to perform until eleven am, Gustavo wanted the guys to meet him at the studio to go over things once more before heading to their televised performance.
So, being half asleep, the four boys got ready for the day and had breakfast. Mama Knight and Katie were coming today to watch the guys perform, so they too were up and ready to go as well. After breakfast, the group all left apartment 2J and headed to the studio. Once there, they met with Gustavo and Kelly to rehearse their performance one last time to make sure everything looked good for that day.
Finally, the whole group left the studio and soon arrived at the location of their televised performance. It was when they entered the building to sign in that Kendall started feeling his anxiety go up. He wanted their performance to go well, just like Gustavo and the others did. The pressure was beginning to get to him; being the group's unofficial leader, Kendall felt like all the weight was on him to ensure the other guys did well and things went smoothly. No one thought about the kind of pressure Kendall was under; they assumed he was just like the other three, but they were wrong. Gustavo relied on Kendall to bring things together and make sure things worked out as Gustavo wanted when it came to something like this. Thus, this was the reason he was nervous. Not only did Kendall have to make sure it went well for Gustavo, but he also had to make sure their head CEO Griffin was happy with it too. It was a lot more to deal with for any seventeen-year-old boy who had to ever deal with in their lifetime. The worry must've been shown on his face because the show's producer started to take the group around the set, James had pulled him aside. The two shared a moment of silence until the other's had vanished out of earshot.
"Are you okay?" James questions as he raises an eyebrow at his blonde-haired friend.
"Don't lie to me Kendall, I can see it on your face; are you worried about our performance?" James wonders as he nods his head side to side in thought.
Sighing, Kendall nods, "A little, yeah, but I'll be okay. What about you? Are you nervous?" Kendall questions as he too raises an eyebrow at James, wondering where he was going with this or if he was checking on him.
James shakes his head, "No, I'm not; we'll be fine, I know it. Anyways there was something I wanted to talk to you about - " James began as he trailed off, biting his lip in worry.
"Yes, what is it?" Kendall questions, he was panicking on the inside, what was James leading onto, he knew James was going somewhere with this conversation, he wasn't sure where. What if he knew? What if Logan told him? But would Logan betray his loyalty like that? Kendall allowed himself to take deep breaths to keep himself calm.
"Well….I overheard you and Logan yesterday a little." James began as he watched Kendall's eyes widen in what almost seemed to be fear? James frowns at his friend. "I heard Logan beg you to promise to stop taking something….what was it? What's going on with you, Kendall? I knew you were different…. But I didn't know it was serious where Logan had to step in. What's going on? What did Logan mean? What are you taking?" James wonders as he raises an eyebrow once more.
Kendall growls slightly; he thought they were alone in the apartment yesterday when they talked. He glares at James, "How did you hear us? I thought you were out somewhere?" Kendall demands as he crosses his arms; he wasn't happy about this, not one bit.
James sighs and shakes his head, "I was outside the door, in the hallway coming back. I was going to enter, but then I heard you and Logan, that's when I heard Logan say that. It sounded serious, so I figured I'd leave and let you two hash things out. But now I want to know, what are you keeping from the rest of us, Kendall? What did Logan mean? What are you taking?" James demands this time, giving Kendall a stare-down.
Kendall goes to open his mouth and speak, but no words come out. James knew something was going on? Of course, he did; he and James had known one another since they were about five. Logan, James, Carlos, and Kendall all knew one another like an open book. Now, Kendall was starting to think that wasn't a good thing. If Logan knew and James was on his trail, how much did Carlos know? Kendall is starting to get scared now, honestly.
Kendall tries to speak again as James sits there tapping his foot, waiting. Before Kendall can get any words out, Gustavo peeks his head around the corner and glares at the two before yelling, "DOGS! COME NOW!" He then vanishes. James and Kendall go follow Gustavo before they get into more trouble, but James gives Kendall his infamous "Were not done talking about this" look before they do. Once they catch up with the others, the producer continues giving them the rest of the tour, and they finally stop at their dressing rooms.
"Here is your dressing room, where you're welcome to relax and hang out until you go into wardrobe, hair, and makeup. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask! You'll be performing shortly; we're very excited to have Big Time Rush join us today!" The producer smiles at the four boys; they all say thank you, and the producer leaves.
Gustavo and Kelly also leave, telling the boys to stay here and not cause trouble. Once the two are doing, who knows what, the four boys are alone in their guest dressing room. Carlos is overeating on some of the snacks on the table while Logan is reading a book; James is checking his hair with his lucky comb and mirror while Kendall is pacing back and forth. It's pretty quiet between them, and whether or not the others felt it, Kendall felt like there was tension between the group mainly caused by him. Ignoring the fact, though, Kendall thinks about how much his anxiety is up and how badly he wants to take those pills; he wants them so badly that he was tempted to take the pills in front of his friends, not caring if they criticize him for it afterward.
But Kendall held back; instead, the boy excused himself to the bathroom, grabbing his small book bag to take with him (his wallet was in there, along with the pills and some other things he carried in case of emergency like an extra pair of clothes) and headed out. Finding a vending machine, Kendall got a bottle of water, opened it, took a drink, then when he made sure the coast was clear, he got the small bottle out of his book bag he had been craving. Opening it, Kendall took two pills this time, his anxiety being high, and with the performance only a short time away, the boy didn't see any harm in it. Once he was done, he closed the bottle and put it away; only to head back to the dressing room just in time.
Kendall, Logan, James, and Carlos were taken to wardrobe, hair, and makeup at the dressing room, for it was almost time for their performance. Once they were ready, the four were waiting backstage, watching the show from their spots. As they watched, Kendall couldn't help but notice his head was starting to hurt, and he was getting a headache? Kendall sighs and tries to rub the sides of his head lightly as he feels his headache getting worse and worse. Another thing Kendall notices is his vision, and Kendall notices that small black spots that disappear when he blinks rapidly. Something wasn't right, Kendall could feel it, but he had to ignore it and push through it because he and his friends were about to go on stage.
" - BIG TIME RUSH! - " The announcer yells as the live audience cheers.
Together, the four boys walked on stage and got into position. When the cheering died down a little, the music started, and the four began to sign their new single, "Love Me Love Me." This was one of their songs coming onto their second album, and so far, it had been pretty popular. They sang and danced for the beginning of the song, and as they got close to the course, Kendall could feel sharp pain where his headache was. The pain was getting so bad that the black dots in his vision was also increasing. Kendall shakes his head and keeps doing his thing.
But, when the four are close to about a minute of the song left, Kendall feels his heart beating fast as well, and suddenly he is getting dizzy. Something was wrong, and he looked over at Gustavo, who was watching from the curtains. He tries to get the manager's attention, but it doesn't work because he can't just stop the performance. Finally, the four-hit their in-sync spin move, and when he spins, Kendall's body can't handle it anymore, and before he knows it, one minute he's looking at the audience, and the next, he's looking at the ceiling.
At first, Logan, James, Carlos, Gustavo, nor Kelly had no idea what happened until they heard the audience gasp and scream—looking at the four boys, Gustavo and Kelly frown when they see James, Carlos, and Logan surrounding Kendall, who was on the floor. Together, the two rushed out to see what was going on. Kendall's eyes were closed, and his breathing was ragged; Logan was going over the blonde-haired boy's vital signs making sure his friend was still alive.
During this, the audience is quiet and whispering in worry, wondering what is going on with one of the band members. The show's producer comes up to Gustavo and Kelly, letting them know they called nine-one-one and that an ambulance was on the way. Silence fills the room, James and Carlos stand close to one another, scared for their friend, and Logan finishes looking the blonde-haired boy over.
"His pulse is beating fast, which is not good, and I checked his head over. I didn't see any physical injuries on his head, which doesn't mean there is any inside. Otherwise, if we get him to the hospital asap, he should be okay; you know, as long as he wakes up…" Logan explained as he frowned while looking at his passed-out friend in worry.
Before the others can speak, the paramedics arrive on the scene. Everyone watches as the paramedics check over Kendall and get him onto a stretcher. They strap him on and get him into the ambulance. As they keep him inside, one paramedic stays with Kendall looking him over while the second one talks to Logan, James, Carlos, Gustavo, and Kelly for information and so on. The audience has complete silence for about fifteen minutes before the ambulance finally takes off just outside the building. The show's producer announces the band's name once more, and three remainings Big Time Rush members wave goodbye awkwardly, and they all get backstage. Logan, James, Carlos, Gustavo, and Kelly rush out of the building and to the Roque Records van. They climb in, and Gustavo starts driving them to the hospital; the ambulance took Kendall too. During their ride, Kelly pulls her phone out and calls Mama Knight.
She answers on the second ring, "Hello Kelly? What's up?"
The four don't hear much, but Kelly explains what happened to Mama Knight while apologizing for the situation. It is hard to hear Mama Knight on the other end, but the three know she is likely troubled listening to Kendall's what happened. Soon, the phone call is over, and Kelly frowns and shakes her head while she turns and looks at the boys.
"She is upset about Kendall, which I understand. Mrs. Knight and Katie will meet us at the hospital." Kelly explains as she sighs sadly, looking at the four empty seats in the back of the van where Kendall usually sat. She adds, "Try to stay calm guys, we'll be there soon."
With that, she turns to look out the front window. Gustavo mutters to himself the whole way there while the guys stay quiet; none of them want to talk. Soon they arrive at the hospital, park, get inside, and find Kendall's room. Upon entering the waiting room, they see Mama Knight and Katie already sitting there. Mama Knight had been crying, you could tell, even if she didn't admit and Katie was super worried. The two stood when they noticed Logan, James, Carlos, Gustavo, and Kelly enter. The guys and girls hugged and chatted quietly among themselves. Now, all they had to do was wait for the doctor to bring news on Kendall; some of them were worried about their blonde-haired, green-eyed friend. Little did some of them not know this was more serious than they realized it was...
