CH.1 P.3: Potential And Power
The two teenagers were tossed onto the sidewalk. Joey immediately stood back up after being tossed and tried reach on of the suits to break their noses, but they'd already backed away and went back inside of the building where Joey didn't feel like following.
The blonde gripped the sides of their head and yelled at the now dark night sky. "DAMMIT! This can't get any fricken worse!"
"I'm sorry Joey." Yugi sat up on the steps that led up to Kaibacorp. "This is my fault, I didn't manage to keep them distracted long enough."
The blonde groaned. "This didn't work at all. I screwed it up completely.. agh! But I couldn't just leave you dude. That wasn't an option. Never was one." Joey admitted. Yugi smiled slightly.
"Thanks for at least trying to help, i appreciate it."
The automatic doors of Kaibacorp building opened up revealing Ziegfried as he stormed out. He spotted the two teenagers and immediately turned away before leaving.
Joey looked as he stormed away. "You think he'll hold a grudge? I think he'll hold a grudge."
Yugi didn't reply, instead choosing to keep quiet and stare vaguely into the night life of the city around them.
Joey kept muttering profanities to himself, only calming down enough to speak to his friend properly after a few minutes of venting. "No Yuge.. It's that damn rich kid's fault that this happened. Screw Kaiba, an absolute prick!" Joey seethed as he sat down next to his friend.
The pair let out a sigh in defeat into the cold night's air. "Shougo's gonna be disappointed that we couldn't do this.." Yugi mumbled half-heartedly.
The blonde shakes his head. "You're right.." No passion was held in his voice, just tiredness. "I could've done better too Yuge."
"We were in this together." You're not at fault." Yugi assured his friend.
"What? So you're allowed to blame yourself, but not me? You don't have to carry my burdens dude." Joey gave a short light laugh, lifting the tension between them slightly.
"Haha." Yugi smiled. "I guess you're right. That's fair game, but you shouldn't blame yourself either way."
"Same goes for you Yuge." Joey added as he sat besides his friend.
There was a long period of silence between the two. The only sounds being of cars going by or people who exited the Kaibacorp building and walked past.
"I'm not sure what to tell my grandpa.." Yugi was the one to break the silence. "I live in his shop, I don't know how he'll react his Kaiba tries to take that from him. It's his passion." The tri-toned boy held his puzzle in both his hands and turned it so the eye on the front of it was looking up at him.
"We'll get through this. Somehow." Joey bounced back, some of his previous passion returning to his voice.
"That's all we can do right now I guess.." Yugi relented as he stood back up, fidgeting worriedly with his puzzle now. "I'm going home now, see ya at school tomorrow Joey."
"See ya Yuge." Joey waved as the other boy left him on the steps. He was soon left alone to ponder what had happened today and what he should do next. He didn't know much about this gentrification thingy Kaiba was gonna pull on him and his friend. Though according to Yugi He'd end up on the street when it's all over.. which is a bad thing, strictly speaking.
Not that he wanted to be around home often anyways. He'd already been saving up for his an apartment for the last few months just doing the random odd jobs here and there, but he wasn't sure if he had enough for one yet.
He fell backwards where he sat and stared up at the starless black sky. This day had been a difficult one. Joey sat there on the steps in the cold. Staring at nothing in-particular letting the time pass him by like it was nothing. He planned to lay there until he could bother himself enough to actually head home.
It was later, Joey wasn't sure how much later. Honestly he was content to just lay out the front of the building until they get sick of him and tell him to leave. A sound stole his attention from just staring vaguely into the street. It was the automatic doors to the building opening once again.
He didn't care to look around to see who was leaving the building this time, like it had for the last few times he'd bothered to look towards the noise.
"Oh, your here still." A feminine voice dejectedly let out.
Joey actually bothered to turn around now, he thought he recognised that voice. As he saw the woman who'd duelled Kaibaia earlier, he realised he was right. He noncommittally waved a hand up. "Yo.."
There was a pause where they just stared at each other for a moment. She looked lost as to what to say now, she looked like she wanted to say something. "Gonna talk or.."
She clicked her teeth. "Whatever.." She turned and walked around him on the stares and away, somewhat confusing Joey
"Did i do something wrong!?" He called out at her.
"No." She assured him, but Joey wasn't convinced. He stood up from the steps to go follow her, as he did the inside of the Kaibacorp building suddenly lit up as a loud ringing sounded from the building.
"Frick!" Joey shouted in surprise. "Wheres the fire!" Actually that saying might actually apply here. That sounded like a fire alarm.
Mai ran up besides him. "What the heck did you do!"
"Why do you assume it was me." Joey defended himself.
"Cause you're you." She stated matter-of-factly.
"You don't even know me!" Joey shot back. The two stood out the front of the building as employees and staff began to run out of the building. Eventually a head of staff ran out and addressed the crowd. Joey recognised the man as Roland from before who announced Kaiba's game with Mai.
"Everyone stay calm! We've checked and it seems it was a false alarm! Someone had manually pulled the fire alarm!" Roland explained succinctly to the crowd. Joey cringed as Mai glared at him.
"What! Do you think i pulled it." The blonde shook his head. "Geez!"
"No, but where is your friend?" Asked Mai.
"He left, it's not him either!" Joey quickly shot back. "Yugi wouldn't pull a fire alarm for kicks anyway." Mai looked at him unimpressed. She probably didn't believe him, that was a pain. "We wanted to take back a friend's card not set the place on fire!"
Kaiba wandered into his office, not bothering to turn on the light. He approached his table and sat in his seat, spinning it around the stare out the window gazing out of his building into the night. buildings and Skyscrapers were beautifully silhouetted by the city's lights and the starless night sky.
Despite it being a city it was quiet up here. Even at night when the city kept bustling until past the sunrise, never really dying out.
Tonight felt different. Kaiba noticed. It felt unnaturally quiet, like something should be making noise when it should've. He ignored that feeling, dismissing it for tiredness.
He grumbled to himself as he removed his deck from his pocket and looked at the top card. The 'Red-Eyes Black Dragon' slightly bent due to some reckless mutt's grip. He tossed the card over his shoulder where the trash bin was.
"Useless. Was never worth the effort it took to get you. A flawed gem is still flawed." Kaiba lamented their earlier day.
"Seems the only thing I'll have to look forward soon is sending those two thieves onto the streets and getting Ziegfried on the late night news." He shrugged even though he was aware that the only reason they managed to even touch his deck was because he purposefully left his deck on that table. He'd thought of the idea the second he spotted them chatting with his old enemy.
Though he didn't expect this to go this well.
There was a loud thump right outside their room. Curious as what that sound was Kaiba turned in their chair to face the door. Only silence and darkness. Then another echoing thump that broke it. It reminded the young CEO of the sound of a body hitting the floor.
Kaiba went to investigate the noise.
He rose from his seat and cautiously slowly approached the door. As he made his way across the room, two more bodies could be heard falling to the floor. Kaiba convinced himself that was what that sound was.
"What the heck is happening out there." He yelled out, the stress of not knowing making him grow more agitated.
He threw open the door.
Those eyes.
Eyes that smiled upon the horrors of the world, eager to create more.
Kaiba turned away and gripped their mouth shut as they felt something rise in their throat like bile. He quickly steeled his will and looked back at the doorway. Whatever had been there was now gone. He poked his head through and looked both ways down the halls to see the fallen bodies of his suited guards. Were they unconscious? Dead?
"The hell?" He growled.
"They got what they deserved. Now it's your turn." A new unheard of before confident voice stated from behind him.
Kaiba spun around quickly. He saw the intruder, similar in appearance to that short student he'd saw duel before, earlier today in fact, Yugi if he bothered to care.
Though he seemed like a completely different person now. He seemed slightly taller, no longer hunching and carried himself with a kingly confidence. His puzzle that hung around his neck seemed to glow faintly with a molten gold light that bended and flaked off like scattered embers and Kaiba could not understand how that was happening. How did it do that. How did it do that. How did it do that.
He sat on his desk, one leg crossed over the over and kicking the air to keep himself occupied.
On his face was a toothy white smile curved into a devilish grin. It wasn't human, but it was trying to be.
Kaiba let his face fall into a concerned frown, refusing to show anything more to this off-putting… person? No. No person could've been what he saw.
Kaiba approached this Devil and crossed his arms. "Usually someone makes an appointment."
The devil cocked their head to one side. "Don't be ridiculous. You wouldn't do such a thing, why should I?" They shook their head, letting out a light 'Tch' 'Tch' 'Tch' sound.
Kaiba agreed. He wouldn't. Doesn't mean this thing could. The Devil in that tri-tone haired boy's skin continued, speaking with an amused tone. "You took something that wasn't rightfully yours. You've shown no respect. Not to that boy, not to your opponent's and especially not the very cards you use."
"That's not my problem." Kaiba rolled his eyes at the subject. "You're here about me taking that card again? Didn't you learn your lesson from last time." Kaiba scoffed. He had been slightly spooked at their arrival, but that feeling quickly left them, replaced with a underlying anger at this person's intrusion.
Like there was something else creeping across his brain, telling him to give into dark desires.
A familiar prideful confidence feeling filled them once more. How dare this person confront them on these plebeian matters, who does he think he is to talk to me about that. Like it wasn't his right to use these cards for their proper purpose, rather than let their power be wasted in the hands of individuals like this.
"Those cards are just tools for my victory, if you get in the way of that I'll remove you. Simply put." Kaiba said calmly.
"And there it is!" The student smiled wider, almost threatening to break their face entirely.
"But?" The devil with Yugi's face pointed a finger at the CEO. "What makes you think you're so worthy? I propose a Duel to figure it out. After all you're the best right."
That was not the tone of a question. Rightfully so. It wasn't a question at all. "At least you understand that." The CEO smirked. "I'm better than the best. You're hardly worth my time." Kaiba corrected as he walked around the desk and the intruder to his seat.
"Then let's bargain. Not just a duel. Raise the stakes for some added fun. let's play a Shadow game. My entire deck for that Red-Eyes?"
"You must be Suicidal if you thought you could just come in here asking for that!" He chuckled darkly. "But fine. I'd be happy to relieve you of your trash." Kaiba smiled contently as he took his seat.
Kaiba shook his head. "This creeping darkness, it's doing something." Kaiba muttered his realisation. The devil simply ignored him in favor of settling the details of their game.
"It's decided. If I win I want that Red-Eyes. But if you lose, i'll let the cards teach you a lesson. Let the Shadow Game commence"
"When I win, I'll see those worthless cards burned." Kaiba immediately began setting up his field of cards. Creating a front row of 'Mountain' terrain and a backrow of 'Neutral' terrain.
Probably Yugi sighed as he stood up and off the desk to sit in a chair across from Kaiba. He set out a field made entirely from 'Yami' and 'Mountain' terrain.
"Let's Duel." The pair announced.

Kaiba made the first move with a dark smile. "Realise your futile effort underneath the gaze of my 'Ryu-Kishin' in attack mode!" (1000/500). Kaiba's smile immediately disappeared, replaced by confusion as a dark pinkish smoke began to pour out of his card as it hit the table. Just like it would in one of his hologram rooms, except this wasn't being played inside one of those..
A single fleshy pink arm gripped the side of the card, claws digging into the table slightly. in the mist a pair of red eyes gleamed.
"W-what's this?" He muttered in disbelief. It was like what he had made with the holographic duel room, but far more animated and life like that anything he had created. His red-skinned demon clawed out of the card, growling and snarling up at Yugi's face.
The devil with Yugi's face seemed amused, chuckling lightly to himself.
"Yes, Kaiba I've decided to show you some true monsters instead of those little facsimiles in that play box of yours."
"This- This is wonderful." Kaiba stated as he looked at the field with twisted mad grin. The tri-tone haired boy had their interest piqued by the professional duelist's statement.
'Oh?'
It was this level of realism like what he was seeing right now that inspired him to create the holographic duel room. This was what he wished to create. He hadn't made anything that felt like this. Yet. He could almost feel his heart beat out of his chest.
Not yet anyways. He'd seen it now, he'd create this himself. Kaiba managed to pry his eyes away from his real monster to Yugi. "This is interesting."
"Impressed?" Maybe Yugi asked
"Quite, though I don't know how you did it."
"Don't bother asking." This Yugi shrugged unhelpfully.
"Whatever." Kaiba frowned as his opponent refused to tell them.
Kaiba continued his turn anyways, pulling out two cards from their hand and placing them onto the field behind his fiend. "I'll set down 2 cards in my backrow and end my turn."
[Turn 2]

Yugi's Field

Yugi calmly drew 2 cards from his deck and added them to his hand. "Well, then let's see what spirit shall i show you? How about i start with this." With a playful sense of whimsy Yugi let his fingers slide across the top of his cards before stopping on the one at the far left of his hand. "I'll match your Fiend with my 'Winged Dragon, Guardian Of The Fortress' summoned onto the 'Mountains' terrain (1400/1200 = 1540/1320)."
A pillar of flame erupted from the card and a blue dragon with spikes protruding from it's back took flight from the card and flew over the field. Circling above.
"This thing again? You used this against that child."
"Well if you're familiar with them, tell me if you've seen this trait? I'm activating my Winged Dragon's ability! Use your Fireball attack. Activate [Illuminate] now!" Yugi declared pointing forward at one of Kaiba's set cards and the blue dragon shot forward firing a blaze of fire from it's most at the card.
The card flipped over by itself immediately revealing the Trap Card 'Reinforcements' before flipping back down of it's own volition.
Yugi nodded. "My monster's trait has revealed your trap. Now a 'Reinforcements' card is quite interesting. You could use it to have your 'Ryu-Kishin' gain 500 Attack points for the turn. Ultimately useless in this situation, but still.."
Kaiba snapped his attention back into reality from the many thoughts in his head trying to work out how that card had flipped over by itself.
"Fine, you found my Reinforcements, but why are you worried? Ryu-Kishin even with a 500 point increase isn't a threat to your dragon. Or do you think i have something else" Kaiba kept his grin down into a neutral line. "What do you expect me to do?"
Yugi gave Kaiba a dead stare. "That's your attempt at a bluff is it?" A smile crawled across Yugi's face. "But you're right Kaiba. I like my odds. Let's attack anyways. Winged Dragon Go! Kill the 'Ryu-Kishin' with your Fireball attack."
The blue dragon dived to land right before the red-skinned fiend and fire a ball of fire at it. The fiend let out a ghastly scream as it's shape became consumed and lost to the blaze. Yugi's monster performed a roll in the air as it let out a roar in victory.
Kaiba shrugged uncaringly as he took 540 damage. "Unfortunate for me."
"I don't recommend playing so hap-hazardly like that against me Kaiba, you might just find yourself in a grave quickly if you keep this up." Yugi? Joked to himself. Kaiba growled back, he hated how much their opponent seemed to be enjoying the game.
"I'll end my turn." The boy with the glowing puzzle finished, passing the turn over to the other player. Kaiba rolled his eyes at the other teenager's statement.
[Turn 3]
Kaiba (Idle: 1) (1460 LP) Hand: 2 (4)

Yugi's Field
Winged Dragon Guardian Of The Fortress #1 (BL-C2) (1540/1320)
Kaiba forced himself to calmly pick up 2 cards from their Deck. "It really was foolish for you to challenge me, I am the National Japanese Champion."
"You can have your ego wave around your titles like a flag all you want, it means nothing to me." Yugi told Kaiba.
Kaiba gave Yugi a dark stare and proceeded with their turn. "I'll start by summoning Battle Ox then I'll attack!" Kaiba grinned as his Minotaur rose out of the card brandishing a huge axe before charging directing at the blue dragon. (1700/1000)
"Just trying to rush me with beatdown tactics? No wonder you don't respect your cards, you don't see anything beyond the numbers printed on them do you?" Kaiba didn't respond, but Yugi continued anyways "You'd never understand what that boy saw." Yugi noted.
"Will you just shut up?" Kaiba asked as he flipped up his 'Reinforcements' Trap Card. "Heres some extra damage and when the target of reinforcements deals damage to you, I'll get to draw one card."
The minotaur brought his axe over the dragon just about to swing, but as it did the winged dragon jumped back attempting to dodge the swing. The Battle Ox feinted the swing instead placing more speed reaching out with his other hand to grab the dragon by it's neck and throw it to the floor.
To prevent it was escaping again it stomped on it's wings pinning the winged dragon. Again it lifted it's axe, this time with both hands above his head. Kaiba's grin grew with sadistic glee as his monster executed the other reducing it to a black sand that was quickly blown away by a sourceless wind. "Haha!" He started.
It was beautiful. He looked up at Yugi, wanting to see his frustration at losing the monster. The sadness, the hatred, the fear. whatever he saw he'd be happy.
Kaiba frowned as instead of any of that, he met Yugi's still stoic face. A floating counter besides his head showed that his life points hadn't changed.
"What did you do." Kaiba growled out the question.
Yugi let himself show a confident smirk. a boney cage materialised around the mysterious boy like armor. "Why Kaiba? Well that's because i just discarded the 'Mammoth Graveyard' using their [Sacrifice] Trait to lower the damage i would've taken to 0. Looks like you were a bit reckless with your Trap Card and just wasted it. Don't you think I played that well?" Yugi smiled with a smile that made Kaiba want to resort to physical violence. (Hand: 6 = 5)
"Charming." Kaiba then set another face-down card, this time placed beside their Battle Ox instead of behind it and in attack position.
Yugi eyed the new set card. Wondering why he would place card there where they could just attack it. Perhaps it was a monster, not a spell or trap? There was no real way to know at the current moment.
"Your move." The attack of Kaiba's battle Ox plummeted back to 1700. Kaiba gave a warm smile to Yugi that never quite reached his eyes. "I hope you're having as much fun as I am at this."
It was Yugi's turn to frown at Kaiba's words. He quickly smiled again however. "Most I bring into these 'Games Of Darkness' were all different to you, they never revelled in what I showed them. They grew terrified at one point or another." Yugi jovially replied.
"I'm not like other people."
"we'll see if that's still true by the end of the night." Yugi added, Kaiba smiled at the challenge.

Yugi took his second turn, picking up his next two cards. "I'll meet your 'Battle Ox' with this! I summon the 'Feral Imp' in one of my Yami Terrains." A green seemingly harmless imp hopped out of the card and crouched in front of the Battle Ox. It looked up at the monster and performed a little playful dance, earning a glare from Kaiba and his beast of war. (1300/1400 = 1690/1820)
The Battle Ox huffed out air from it's nostrils indifferently at the little Fiend as it playfully tilted it's head at the beast-warrior.
"Next" Yugi continued. "I'll Equip the imp with the 'Sword Of Dark Destruction' granting it even more power than before." A black sword with a pale red blade shot out from the card and fell, stabbing into the table. A dark energy exuded from the blade that drew towards Yugi's cutesy fiend. The 'Feral Imp's' demeanour flipped instantly, it's grin becoming malicious and evil. It leaped up, Ripping the sword from the ground, along with several shards of wood in the process, before brandishing it towards the Battle Ox. (1690/1820 = 2290/1220)
The Ox grunted as it fell into a battle ready stance, sensing it's own peril. Kaiba grimaced.
"Since my Feral Imp was Equipped with an Equip Card it's [Mastery] Trait triggers, letting me draw 1 card." Yugi did so before proceeding to his Battle Phase. "Battle! Imp attack the 'Battle Ox' now!"
The evil imp leap forward and slashed at the minotaur, bisecting it at the hip, before anything gory could be seen the monster disintegrated into the shadows. The Sharp Eyed boy scowled as their life points lowered yet again. (LP: 1460 = 870)
It doesn't seem like this is going very well for you." Yugi commented with a sly smirk.
"I said shut it." Kaiba shot back. "You haven't even seen what I'm capable of."
"Hm." The tri-toned boy sighed. "I end my turn by setting down two cards and normal summoning the 'Giant Soldier Of Stone' in defence mode." a wall of a monster emerged from the earth, made of solid blocky stone, their arms crossed over it's chest as it set up a defensive stance.

Giant Soldier Of Stone (FL-C2) (1300/2000)
Sword Of Dark Destruction* (BL-C3)
2 (FDA) Set Cards (BL-C2,C4)
The sharp eyed boy drew for turn. Internally fuming, yet he still kept up his poker face, though he was sure it wasn't fooling his opponent.
He was angry. It was all this idiots fault, this fool who dares think they're worthy enough to even sit at the same table as him. Kaiba couldn't process this anger that fuelled him, ever since this duel had begun he couldn't help but acknowledge that some part of him wanted to be unleashed. Full force. Enough games.
This card will show what he means. He just has to summon it.
Kaiba smiled as he decided. It was time to unleash the beast. "I'll start this turn by summoning the Mystical Genie Of The Lamp! La Jinn answer my call!" A lamp formed on top of the placed card a green amorphous mist pooling out into it coalesced into the shape of a muscular man, arms crossed and awaiting orders. (1800/1000)
"What will you do Kaiba, without the help of another card your Genie lacks the strength to hurt me in any way."
"Who said I was finished!" Kaiba said knowingly. "I've still have this, The spell Monster Reborn, reviving any one Monster from either of our graveyards, in exchange I can no longer Special Summon any other time this Phase of my turn."
A bright light rose from the card, as it disappeared it revealed the form of the 'Battle Ox' standing up from a kneeling position. (1700/1000)
Yugi smiled "That's still not enough. Kaiba."
"I don't need you to tell me that! Battle." Suddenly and without an order the Battle Ox begins to rush forward towards the 'Feral Imp' with reckless abandon.
Yugi gasped. A monster wouldn't just attack on it's own without orders. Was Kaiba's bloodlust so strong his monsters could sense it and act according to it! Yugi quickly reached for his set card. The Battle Ox charged forward tackling the Feral Imp to the floor.
Yugi scowled as he realised what the monster was aiming for. "You weren't attacking the monster…" The battle Ox stepped over the dropped Sword Of Dark Destruction and stomped it into dust, giving out a vicious battle cry as it did so. "It was my Sword." (2290/1220 = 1690/1820)
The Feral Imp shook it's head to regain it's bearings and looked up. Only to see the Mystical Genie La Jinn hovering over it. The genie in a blink of an eye reached out with it's arms and attempted to clap the smaller fiend's skull in.
Yugi quickly flipped his set card. "Not so fast. I activate 'Reinforcements' targeting my Imp!" Right before their skull as about to be caved in the Imp raised it's arms to block the Genie's arms from pushing any further. The two monster became locked in a battle of strength, the imp slowly managing to push the Genie's arms back as a white light began to shine around it's silhouette. (1690 = 2190)
Kaiba scoffed at the attempt. "You may have set a trap, but traps aren't the only cards that can be activated during the battle phase." The sharp eyed boy threw a spell from their hand onto the field.
"An Equip Spell!" Yugi clenched his teeth.
"Yes, the 'Dark Energy' Equip Spell giving my monster 2 things, first is a 300 attack and defence boost and then it grants my monster a trait known as [Superior]" (1800/1000 = 2100/1300)
"Not that."
"Yes, the [Superior] Trait takes any monster my Genie attacks with attack or defence higher than their original attack or defence and then deprives them of their flimsy power. Now cower under the strength of true power!" Kaiba shouted, laughing manically as a blue orb surfaced at various points on La Jinn's body glowering and granting the genie greater power than before. (2190/1820 = 1300/1400)
The power shot out, washing over the 'Feral Imp', causing it to stiffen as it's strength failed. It stumbled forward onto one knee.
The Genie roared as it exerted it's new strength, crushing the Fiend until it exploded into a dark mist.
Yugi winced. (2000 = 1200)
"That's not it." Kaiba continued. "My set Monster will also attack." The set card on Kaiba's Front row flipped as a elf dressed in a business suit jumped up and dived forward at Yugi. (1400/1300)
The elf stabbed at their final set card, revealing a equip spell for Spellcaster monsters before the card was sent to the grave.
The tri-tone haired boy frowned as he lost another card. "I see you snuck a 'Witty Phantom' onto the field. It having not only [Maze-Dweller], but also the [Hide] trait allows it to become a powerful espionage style card." Yugi commented as the Phantom bowed before his card flipped face-down again.
"Thanks to [Hide]." Kaiba started to explain. "My card can attack while it is face-down, flipping face-down again once the battle is over, a similar thing would occur if it was used in conjunction with certain other traits. Sadly it isn't that good of a card without them, barely worth the effort of being in my deck. But it has a niche use at least." Kaiba insults the card, causing Yugi to frown.
"Moving on, I'll enter my Main Phase 2 and Tribute my set Phantom for the 'Judge Man' in attack mode." Kaiba removed his Phantom and replaced it with the a ogre-esque man dressed in ceremonial armor and clothing wielding a pair of maces. (2200/1500)
"Your move Yugi." Kaiba declared, almost in away that told the tri-tone haired boy 'to just try and get through this field.'

Yugi drew for turn and immediately activate the 'Monster Reborn' he had just picked up. "With this I bring back my Winged Dragon." A burst of light revealed a returning blue dragon, immediately as it appeared Yugi ordered the activation of it's [Illuminate] Trait. Revealing Kaiba's last set card to be a set Polymerization card.
"i'll tribute summon a monster! Tributing my Stone Soldier and Winged Dragon in order to summon a Great Warrior! 'Gaia, The Fierce Knight in attack mode." A knight in blue with red armor rode a Ferocious purple horse that huffed a heated breathe of steamed air out. (2300/2300)
"You have one of the strongest warrior monsters in the game!" Kaiba asked with curiosity. "I'm surprised you have such a rare card like that, same with that magician from your last game I saw. You have interesting cards for a nobody."
The stranger across from Kaiba shrugged.
"You are correct about Gaia Kaiba, he is one of my strongest allies. Now it's time to battle. " At the mention of the word the horse Gaia rodes reared up and let out a battle cry alongside it's rider. "My Fierce Knight is equipped with the [Efficient] Trait allowing it to attack a certain number of times, Gaia specifically has [Efficient 2] meaning you're going to have to contend with two of his attacks!"
"Too bad only my Judge and La Jinn are on the front lines, I won't be taking as much damage as I could've." Kaiba notes.
"But you'll still lose your monsters." Yugi countered as he sent his hand forward directing the horseman to attack.
"Now Gaia, destroy the 'Judge Man' with your Spiral Spear Strike!" The knight on horse back charged forward, lancing the Judge once, causing it's body to break into the mist. Kaiba scoffed, barely fazed by the loss in monster and life points. (870 = 770)
"What a useless monster." Kaiba muttered as he tossed the 'Judge Man' card off the table and onto the floor. "Not even worth the effort to summon."
"Now Gaia strikes at your 'La Jinn!' Destroying your Equip Spell." Yugi continues, interrupting Kaiba in the process. "Now it can't do anymore damage." Yugi declares, Kaiba simialrly just flicks his wrist and throws the spell off the table, sacrifcing it for his monster to remain. He didn't want to lose his La jinn after all. (770 = 570)
"Hmph." Kaiba shrugged.
Yugi felt disturbed by the fact that Kaiba still didn't care about his precarious position. Did he have something that could destroy Gaia? "Main Phase 2, I'll set a card in defence mode behind Gaia and end my turn."

Yugi crossed his arms waiting for Kaiba to draw for turn. The sharp eyed boy stared down at the field. Grin still on his face. He was enjoying this far too much.
"Do you think you're good at this game.." Kaiba asked.
Yugi didn't answer. Kaiba decided to continue anyway. "Sure you can play the game, even a monkey could, so don't be so proud. You summoned a big monster? Please! That knight is a trash card. It's not worth the effort to even summon. Unlike this card." He hissed.
"Tell me Yugi."
Yugi was still silent, even as Kaiba picked up his next two cards. "Do you want to see true power as it lays waste to your entire deck!"
Kaiba removed his two monsters, presumably tributing them for a tribute summon. "I summon… The Blue-Eyes White Dragon. Break through the dark my great drake!"
The dark room exploded in a force of light, briefly and completely illuminating the room for a few seconds as the dragon was placed onto Kaiba's mountain terrain. Scales of pure white, eyes of serene blue and an immeasurably force exuded across the room. Yugi knew instantly that a powerful force unlike any he had felt before had just arrived.
The dragon landed on the field and stood there, staring forward with a clouded expression. a low but weak growling noise coming from the Level 8 monster.
Kaiba laughed maniacally. "If you think what I did to that kid with the Red-Eyes, then you have no idea, that's nothing compared to what I did to get this card."
Yugi frowned at the depressed looking dragon on the field.
"While on the Mountains it gains a 20% boost, raising it's attack up to 3600! You have no hope to fight it." Kaiba shouted as he ordered the dragon to attack. The dragon moved as if it was slightly lethargic, no energy in it's movements. It looked forward and fire a beam of pure white energy at Gaia. (3000/2500 = 3600/3000)
"Take away the rest of their Life Points!" Kaiba shouted
Yugi smirked as the dragon charged a beam of light that flew outwards like white lightning. striking the knight and clouding the field in a explosion of smoke. Kaiba was cackling at his apparent victory. "Take that, no one can match the might of Blue-Eyes and let every card that tries burn."
Not so fast Kaiba, it's too soon to call a victor." The smoke cleared revealing Yugi and 'Gaia The Fierce Knight.' Both completely unharmed.
"How!" Kaiba seethed.
"It's simple." Yugi pointed at his field. Specifically where his set his last turn. "That card I set last turn in face-down defence mode wasn't a monster as you may have assumed." Kaiba clenched his teeth, but that was all the confirmation Yugi needed.
"Instead it was an Equip Spell known as 'Power Bracer' Kaiba" Yugi placed the Spell in the grave, sacrificing it to protect his warrior. "The 'Power Bracer' spell is a simple one, boosting Gaia up by 500 points. Pushing me out of the danger zone."
"Meaning instead of dealing 1300 damage like it should've, it was buffered down to survivable 800 damage. You're still on the verge of defeat. Now take your turn and make it quick" Kaiba shrugged. It didn't matter if Yugi survived a turn longer, he'd just win on his next turn. (1200 = 400)

Yugi drew for his turn and instantly breathed a sigh of relief, gaining a look of confusion from Kaiba across the table. "That was close." But he still needs something to not only protect himself from that powerful dragon, but also destroy it. "I activate the spell 'Swords Of Revealing Light' to stall your dragon."
The Blue-Eyes didn't seem to notice as swords of light fell like rain onto the field. Each sword releasing a pacifying aura over Kaiba's monster. Kaiba scowled. "Really? You're trying to hide! HA! Yes! Cower at my power! I guess we now have a timer until your destruction."
"For the next 3 turns neither player may set cards face-down nor declare an attack." Yugi explained his spell's function. "Additionally as it's active all set cards are forcibly turned face-up."
Kaiba rolled his eyes. "Forcing me to use my set card's early?" he reached for his only set card and flipped a 'Polymerization - The First Fusion'.
"Since it's not a monster you have to use the card if you're able to at this timing, otherwise it's wasted and sent to the grave without doing anything." Yugi continued explaining, much to Kaiba's annoyance. This wouldn't be the first time someone has tried to explain something he had already known.
"Unfortunately I cannot activate any of the effects of my fusion spell." Kaiba growled, sending it to the grave.
"Next I'll change 'Gaia The Fierce Knight' to defence mode and summon the 'Blackland Fire Dragon' in defence mode. That's my turn Kaiba." Yugi finished as a green scaled dragon appeared and used it's wings to shield it's body and head.

Kaiba's face twisted into a malicious grin as he drew his cards. "You really think this will protect, it will only take my so long to find a spell removal card."
"Until then I believe my defence will be sufficient to stop your dying dragon."
Kaiba scoffed. "Insult my dragon all you want, it has enough power to destroy every card in your deck." The sharp eyed boy set down a second copy of 'Ryu-Kishin' in defence mode behind his dragon. "I just need time."
"Do you seriously not see that beast suffering?" Yugi asked.

Yugi picked up his cards and set down the 'Mystical Elf' in defence mode. Every card he drew wasn't nearly strong enough to battle that white dragon. He needed a card like his Dark Magician or perhaps something else.
Yugi looked up at the dragon. He didn't need any special senses to tell that the creature was depressed and weakened. But also, there was something else about it. A lingering bond. A string made of gold that ties around it's and Kaiba's souls. He didn't understand it so he made no comment.
"That's all i can do this turn." Yugi nodded.
"Scared of my dragon?" Kaiba asked. "You should be, this is a grand victory for me!"

Kaiba drew for turn and smiled. Yugi assumed the worst. "I activate the Spell Card De-Spell, sending your Swords back into your Deck, now Blue-Eyes attack that Blackland Fire Dragon!" Kaiba ordered.
The white dragon lifted it's head and charged a beam before firing directly at the green dragon, turning it to dust. Yugi frowned as he raised an arm to defend his eyes from the force of the explosion.
"Now the Blue-Eyes White Dragon's [Buster] Trait will turn that dragon's 450 point potential boost into damage! You're done!" Kaiba laughed, but before he could lose himself in the frenzy of it, Yugi smiled, cutting Kaiba off.
"Not yet Kaiba, My 'Mystical Elf'' had 2 traits, specifically [Bountiful] and the [Purity] Trait. The second one is very important right now. [Purity] halves all effect damage i would take. Meaning instead I'll only be taking 225 damage instead of the full 450. Leaving me with 175 points left."
"Dammit, you're a persistent cockroach aren't you. Why won't you just give up and die already!" Kaiba shouted, standing up from his seat.
"Why?!" Yugi stood up as well and pointed accusingly at Kaiba. "Because I trust is my deck to give me what I need to survive, while you just play along and use your cards as if you were just a robot, like they're tools."
"What else could they be, you're talking nonsense."
"I'm not surprised that you can't see your monster's true ability. You place no faith in them, the few you show some tiniest, tiniest but of faith in are only the cards you're willing to risk. That's why you barely make use of any terrains. You don't trust your cards to give you anything. An attack boost leaves you vulnerable to taking damage. You wouldn't ever leave yourself vulnerable like that, you consider that a card's weakness But when they do manage to deliver it's only because of your skill, your ego blinds yourself to anything beyond the mechanical."
"What? Just because I won't play some risky strategy like your magician's [Amplified] strategy, where you just pray you get enough spells before you lose anyway."
"I trust my deck to give me the right cards and my cards trust me to utilise them to their full potential. You see nothing but words and numbers. It's cold and mechanical. You haven't even noticed your invincible monster's current state." Kaiba glances down as Yugi points it out to the tired white dragon on the field.
Kaiba clenches his teeth and glares back at Yugi. "What does any of this matter? Faith? Trust? You're crazy, you're actually insane! All that matters is they win! Who cares if my dragon looks sad, it's still the strongest thing on the field!"
Kaiba slammed both his hands on the table and bared his teeth with a dangerous smile. "It's your last turn Yugi, make it count, draw your last pathetic card and cry when it's nothing but worthless trash compared to my card."

Yugi slashed the air as he drew his next two cards and immediately smiled. "Kaiba, you won't get away with under estimating my deck." The tri-tone haired boy revealed one of the cards he had drawn, showing Kaiba a dragon with pitch black scales, deep red eyes and jagged horns.
The sharp eyed boy scoffed. "Really? Did you take that from the trash when I wasn't looking? What good will that do you."
Ignoring Kaiba, Yugi picked up his two monster's on the field and tributed them. "Appear, dragon that offers the chance at victory, tap into your unyielding potential. 'Red-Eyes Black Dragon!' Show your wrath."
A torrent of flame erupted from the card as it was slammed onto the table, a black dragon similar in size, if only slightly smaller than Kaiba's white dragon. The strength of the mountains granting it power equal to it's rival across the board. (2400/2000 = 3600/3000)
"So what! Attack me, even if the destruction is mutual. [Buster] will still trigger, you'll still take 1200 damage and I'll win!" Kaiba clapped his hands. "This is game, come on Yugi, let's see you go out in a blaze of glory!"
"That's not going to happen Kaiba." Yugi began to explain "My 'Mystical Elf's' [Bountiful] Trait triggers at this time. When it is tributed, the monster that it was tributed for gains twice it's potential bonus this turn." The black dragon roared out a mighty roar that shook the room. (3600/3000 = 4800/4000)
"Wh-what! That's…" Kaiba stammered leaning back in their seat as the black dragon grew in size from the increase in power, becoming too big to fit on the table. It flew back to stand behind Yugi as it kept growing. It grew until it was an acceptable size for a dragon. Wings unfurled and pressed against the ceiling making it look as if Kaiba was staring into a endless dark void.
The Blue-Eyes White Dragon on the field began to spark violently. Noticing what the dangerous dragon was doing to the one it shared an connection to.
"What's happening." Yugi growled as the white dragon grew in size similarly to Red-Eyes, becoming as large if not bigger than the black dragon. Wrapping it's form around where Kaiba sat and roaring a warning at the other dragon.
Yugi looked up at the blue-eyed dragon, that narrowed it's eyes down at the tri-toned boy. Yugi closed his eyes. "I will say this Kaiba, you pushed me far. While I don't know why, I do see some connection between you and that white dragon…"
Yugi opened his eyes and pointed at the scared teen in his seat who constantly glanced around between the dragon's and the other boy. "It's sad that as you are now, you'd have probably thrown it away when you came across something stronger."
Kaiba couldn't find it in himself to answer. He settled for clenching his teeth.
"You've deluded yourself for a long time, perhaps it's time for you to know how it feels to be treated like your cards. Penalty Game! Red-Eyes attack!" The black dragon threw a ball of fire it had been charging in it's mouth. The white dragon shot back in a instant with it's own beam back at the blast.
The breath weapons meet in the middle, exploding on contact with a white light. Kaiba reaches up to protect his eyes from the sudden flash bang.
The sharp eyed boy fell backwards. His mind rationed it as him falling out of his chair but as he hit the floor he didn't feel the familiar texture of office carpet. Instead it was jagged stones. As his vision came back to him he wasn't in his office anymore. He wasn't even in a city. Desolate wasteland surrounded him on all times.
"What happened?" He muttered to himself as he stood up, the fear subsiding slightly, but the anxiety following suit. He tried looking around for something anything. But there was no life r civilisation in sight her was alone.
The wasteland was cold in the night, he shivered.
'Crack'
He immediately looked down at the sound to see a break in the ground at his feet.
'crack' 'crack' 'crack'
Kaiba screamed as the floor broke apart and something came up grabbing at his ankle, causing him to trip backwards. As he fell on his back more cracks could be heard. A dragon's jaw jutted from the heart and grabbed at his left arm restraining it from moving.
It hurt. It hurt more than anything he'd experienced. He looked down and recognised the colours of the scales. It was a duel monster. Card he had used once long ago. He couldn't remember the name but he remembered the colour.
One by one arms, claws, jaws and other various appendages jutted from the earth and wrapped and grabbed at various parts of his body. He looked around, his head still fee. For some reason or another, he could recognise every single card. Every monster he'd abandoned. Threw away. Turned to ash.
A pair of dragon's teeth wrapped around the sides of his head slowly coming more and more, becoming dangerously close to decapitating him, but it never did. He couldn't recognise this card from the inside of it's jaw, though some part of him wished it wasn't that one card. It can't be that one, it didn't match the pattern. The other's were cards he had abandoned. He still used this card if it was what he thought it was. Paranoia set in.
What if it was that card. Before he could think another thought the many arms pulled him under the ground, the ground sealing up above him. Burying him alive. Left alone in the dark with only his thoughts and various horrors with a grudge against him.
Kaiba stared with clouded eyes, unresponsive to the world around him. With that Yugi left him to be found by someone else. Brushing off the Red-Eyes Black Dragon he had just obtained. "You'll survive that illusion." Yugi mused to Kaiba, even though he knew they wouldn't be able to hear them. "Let that be your punishment for your crimes."
Minutes later a group of people entered the dark room, seemingly empty, except for the CEO Kaiba, still sitting in his chair. at first they were unsure of what was happening when their CEO didn't respond to them. A younger person was the first to approached him.
As he stared into the eyes of Kaiba he screamed. Loud enough for people halfway across the building to hear it.
It'd only been a while since the fire alarm had been pulled. Joey didn't want to stand here anymore.
"Remind me why I shouldn't leave." Joey asked Mai who was still standing beside him.
"Stop complaining. The guards just all rushed inside, something important is going on." She explained, looking around through the crowd.
"The elevator's stopped working, so what?" Joey droned. "It's still not Yugi like you've been insisting for the past half an hour!" Joey growled out.
Mai wasn't fazed by the rude student. "And you're still going to tell me this is all a weird coincidence."
"It literally is!" Joey replied, almost yelling out of annoyance.
"Really?" Mai hummed.
"Yes really!"
"Then who is that over there?" Mai pointed behind Joey across the street, Joey turned to look and found what she was pointing at. It was Yugi. Walking away into the night.
"What!" Immediately Joey took off, leaving Mai running towards Yugi.
"Hey!" She called out to Joey. "Don't run away from me! Get back here! I knew you two were up to something!"
In a hospital a boy unable to sleep in the hospital bed sighed. He heard a noise to his left . As he looked he found a Duel Monsters Card face-down on the table mysteriously there now. No sign of anyone that could've put it there. His curiosity peaked. Shougo reached to pick it up. He turned it around to see which card it was.
At the sight of the 'Red-Eyes Black Dragon' he began to tear up again, holding the card close to his chest before drifting to sleep.
Less then a minute later Joey kicked open the door and scared Shougo half to death.
Notes
it's finally, done. Kaiba vs Yugi round 1 is completed, though this definitely won't be the last time we see them duel together. This opening arc is going to be a lot longer and use some more elements from season 0 before we move on to duelist kingdom, so look forward to that. i know I am.
