Chapter 5
The next morning in the Valley of Peace, the morning gong rung. Jinjing and the Five burst out of their rooms and stand outside their doors ready for inspection as Shifu enters the hallway of the student barracks.
"Good morning, Master!" the Five said.
"Good morning, Uncle!" Jinjing said.
One door remains closed.
"Panda! Panda, wake up!" Shifu said calling for Po. He opens the doors. The room is empty. The old red panda chuckles.
"He's quit," he said satisfied. Jinjing looked so sad.
Jinjing, Shifu, and the Five walked to the Training Hall Courtyard.
"What do we do now, Master? With the panda gone, who will be the Dragon Warrior?" Viper asked with concern.
"All we can do is resume our training and trust that in time, the true Dragon Warrior will be revealed," Shifu opens the doors, only to find Po spreading his legs apart with two training horses.
"What are you doing here?!" Po looks back over his shoulder to see Shifu, Jinjing, and the Five staring at him.
"Hey! Huh… Good morning, Master! I thought that I warm up a little," Po said as he tried to lift one leg, but failed.
"You're stuck," Jinjing and Shifu said.
"Stuck? Whaa? Pfft… stuck… does this look stuck to you…" Po denied. Jinjing stared at him.
"Yeah, I'm stuck," he admitted.
"Help him, please," Jinjing said to Crane.
"Oh, dear," Crane said grabbing Po's waistband and to pull him up by flapping his wings. Crane pulls Po up and the panda flops on his back.
"Thank you," Po said getting on his feet.
"Don't mention it,"
"No, really. I appreci—" Crane walked back to the group.
"Ever,"
"You thought that you could learn to do a full split in one night? It takes years to develop one's flexibility and years longer to apply it in combat," Jinjing said flinging two boards in the air, and Tigress steps forward. Shifu snaps his fingers. Instantly, Tigress leaps up and did a perfect split kick. She landed, glaring at Po, and returns to Shifu's group. The broken chunks of board land all around Po, a large one hit him on the head. Po picks it up and hides it behind his back.
"Put that down! The only souvenirs we only collect are bloody knuckles and broken bones," Shifu said.
Po throws the chunk. "Yeah, excellent,"
"Let's get started," Shifu snaps his fingers. The Five and Jinjing gather in a line in the courtyard as Viper and Po face off.
"Are you ready?" Viper said.
"I was born ready—" Viper lashes out with her tail, flinging Po into the air, and brings him back crashing back down on his head. "OW! Oh—"
"I'm sorry, brother. I thought you said that you were ready," Viper said.
"That was awesome! Let's go again," Po said, saluting.
Then, it was Monkey's turn who twirls a bamboo staff. He comical beats Po. Crane and Po prepare to spar atop the turtle bowl, resulting Po being tossed around. At this time, the sun is setting. Po falls on his face at the work of Mantis. Po salutes and this time, Shifu had it.
"I've been taking it easy on you, panda, but no more! Your next opponent will be me,"
"Alright! Yeah, let's go!" Monkey, Mantis, Viper, and Crane exchange worried looks.
"This is going to be fun," Jinjing said sarcastically as Shifu and Po face off.
"Step forth," Shifu said. Po doesn't finish the step as Shifu whirls him around with no effort and throws him to the floor pinning his arm behind him.
"The true path to victory is to find your opponent's weakness and make him suffer it,"
"Oh ho, yeah!" Po said.
Shifu throws Po around again. "To take his strength and use it against him. Until he finally falls, or quits,"
"But a real warrior never quits. Don't worry, Master, I will never quit!" Po said. At his breaking point, Shifu flings Po in the air and then leaps at him with a flying kick. Po crashes out of the door and tumbles down the steps, yelling. Jinjing and the Five walk outside and watch him fall. Jinjing feels bad for Po.
"If he's smart, he won't come back up those steps," Tigress said.
"But he will," Monkey said. Tigress walks back inside.
"He's not gonna quit, is he?" Viper asked.
"No. He said that he will never quit," Jinjing answered.
"He's not gonna quit bouncin', I'll tell you that," Mantis said laughing. Viper silences him with a stern hiss. "Mantis," Jinjing said.
"Sorry," Mantis apologized.
*KFP*
After taking Po back to the bunkhouse, Jinjing decided to go to the Training Hall to train herself for an hour. She walked to the Seven Swinging Clubs of Instant Oblivion, which she succeeded. Then, she moved on to the other courses, which she also succeeded in. After training, she went for a walk and then she saw Oogway so she decided to go to him.
"Hello, Master Oogway. Mind if I join you?" Jinjing asked.
"Yes," he said. She sat down next to him.
"How was training with the Dragon Warrior?" he asked.
Jinjing sighed. "Honestly, it's not going well. I don't know why. I believe in Po, I really do. But I just don't understand what went wrong," Oogway put his arm around Jinjing.
"My advice to you is to find out what will work for him and try it during training to see if it works," Jinjing looks at him.
"Really?" Oogway nodded.
"But, how will I know that it will work?" Jinjing asked.
"You just need to believe. Promise me that you will believe,"
"I will,"
"Good,"
"Thanks for the talk, Master Oogway,"
"No problem, young one," They hugged (A/N) and she walked to the bunkhouse. By the time she got there, she heard voices. She went to the hallway and went in Po's room.
"And now he has a chance to make things right to train the true Dragon Warrior. And he's stuck with you… a big, fat panda who treats it like a joke,"
"Doieeeee…"
"Oh, that's it!" Tigress said getting ready to hit Po.
"Tigress, stop!" Jinjing said.
"Wait! My fault! I accidentally tweaked his facial nerve," Mantis said. Po falls and his back is covered with needles. Jinjing gasped in shock. "And may have also stopped his heart," Mantis added poking Po's face then his eyes twitch.
"Mantis, get the needles out of him now!" Jinjing said.
"Okay, okay. Sheesh! Calm down," Mantis said.
"Never tell a girl to calm down,"
"Alright, alright,"
After that, Po, Jinjing, and the Furious Five went to the kitchen for dinner. Jinjing and the Five sat down. So, Po decided to cook for them. Jinjing, Viper, Crane, Monkey, and Mantis are listening to Po's story.
"So I'm like, fine, you may be a wolf, you may be the scariest bandit in Hanjin Province but you're a lousy tipper," Po said cutting the radish mid-air and the slices fall into the pot.
"Really? So how'd you get out of there alive?" Crane asked.
"I mean, I didn't actually say that, but I thought it in my mind. If he could read my mind, he'd have been like 'What?' Order up! Hope you like it," Po said slides the bowls of noodle soup to Jinjing and the Five, except for Tigress who already has a plate of tofu.
Mantis takes a sip. "This is really good,"
Po blushed. "No, c'mon. You should try my dad's secret ingredient soup. He actually knows the secret ingredient,"
"What are you talking about? This is amazing," Viper and Jinjing said.
"Wow, you're a really good cook," Crane said.
"I wish my mouth was bigger," Mantis said.
"Tigress, you've got to try this," Monkey said.
"It is said that the Dragon Warrior can survive for months at a time on nothing but the dew of a single ginkgo leaf and the energy of the universe," Tigress said picking up her plate of tofu, picking up a piece of tofu with her chopsticks, and takes a bite.
"I guess my body doesn't know it's the Dragon Warrior yet. I'm gonna need a lot more than dew. And uh, universe juice," Po said picking up his bowl and taking a big gulp. When he puts his bowl down, a noodle was hanging from his face… looking like a mustache. Mantis and Jinjing snicker.
"What?" Po asked.
"Oh, nothing… Master Shifu," Mantis said. The rest starts laughing. Po realizes he's wearing a noodle mustache. He gets up from his chair, picks up his chopsticks, and pretends it's Shifu's staff.
"You'll never be the Dragon Warrior, unless you lose 500 pounds and brush your teeth!" Po said imitating Shifu. Jinjing and the Five laugh. Except Tigress.
"What's that funny noise you're making? Laughter? I never heard of it! Work hard, Panda. And maybe someday you'll have ears like mine!" Po said picking up two empty bowls and holding them up like ears. Jinjing and the Five are in near-hysterics. They stopped when they saw Shifu, holding Oogway's staff with a scowl on his face.
There goes my fun. Jinjing thought.
"Ears? It's not working for you? I thought they were pretty good," Po said.
"It's Shifu," Monkey said.
"Of course it's Shifu. What do you think I'm doing?"
"Turn around," Jinjing whispered to Po. He turns and finally sees Shifu standing there. In shock, Po slaps the bowls to his chest.
"Ooh! Master Shifu! I…" Po said slurping the noodle mustache and lowering his arms. Jinjing and the Five burst out laughing.
"You think this is funny?! Tai Lung has escape from prison and you're acting like children!" Shifu said. Jinjing stopped laughing when her uncle mentioned Tai Lung.
"What?" Po said.
"He's coming for the Dragon Scroll, and you are the only one who can stop him!" The bowls fall off and they clatter on the floor.
Po laughs. "And here I am saying you have no sense of humor. I'm gonna… stop Tai Lung," Shifu stares at him, deadly serious.
"What, you're serious? And I have to… uh… Master Oogway will stop him! He did it before, he'll do it again," Po said.
"Oogway cannot!" Shifu snapped. He softens looks down at Oogway's staff. "Not anymore," Jinjing and the Five looked up in shock.
"What?" Jinjing softly said hopefully Shifu didn't hear her.
"Our only hope… is the Dragon Warrior," Shifu said.
"The panda?" Tigress asked.
"Yes, the panda!"
"Master, please! Let us stop Tai Lung, this is what you trained us for!" Tigress said standing up from her chair.
"No! It is not your destiny to defeat Tai Lung. It is his!" Shifu said pointing at Po but the panda is gone. "Where'd he go?"
"He went outside," Jinjing said with sadness.
As soon as Shifu went outside to stop Po, Jinjing still sitting at the table. The Five stared at her.
"Jinjing? Are you alright?" Viper asked. The female red panda had tears in her eyes.
"I'm sorry… I can't," She choked with a sob and took off.
"Jinjing," Crane said as he and the others went to go after her.
"Let her go. She needs time alone," Tigress said.
Author's Note: Oogway and Jinjing's last moment together is almost similar to Mufasa and Simba's in Disney's The Lion King (1994) which is available to watch on Disney Plus
