Satine was shocked when Obi-Wan and Bo-Katan actually showed up at the palace together. It was one of the last things she expected would happen, especially since Bo-Katan didn't look quite as annoyed as she normally did. Not that she looked ecstatic or anything like that either. Rather she looked... indifferent or just mildly annoyed.
She didn't say anything to Satine when she got here and left in silence to her room, but even that was better in a way.
"You and Bo were spending time together?" Satine asked, not able to prevent herself from feeling hopeful. If Bo and Obi-Wan could get along… no, it wouldn't make up for not telling him about her all these years, but it would still be better for both of them. They both deserved to have each other.
"Sort of," Obi-Wan said. "I found her."
"At the library?" Satine asked. She was pretty sure this was the day that Bo said she always went to the library with some of her friends to study. Satine had even met the friends she went with. They were nice girls from good Mandalorian families.
"No," Obi-Wan said. "She wasn't at the library."
Satine frowned. Maybe she had just gotten back from it.
Or rather maybe Bo-Katan had skipped it this week or had been lying to her for awhile. Either was possible.
"It's… Part of it isn't that big of a deal, Satine. I don't think it is anyway," Obi-Wan said. He rubbed the back of his neck. "I know what you're going to say but—"
"What was she doing, Obi-Wan?" Now she was even more worried. Obi-Wan obviously knew that she wasn't going to like it. And there were plenty of things that Bo-Katan wanted to do that Satine didn't approve of. Her sister was much more… of a traditional Mandalorian in many ways, despite what Satine tried to teach her. She really believed all the propaganda about the glory that warfare brought and how it was the way.
Even before Satine had been exposed to war she had never bought into that like some people did, but Bo had fallen for it. It probably didn't help that their mother had told her so many stories about their father when he had been a Mandalorian warrior. Bo used to want to be just like him.
Stars. Satine had loved her father and she knew that he had been proud that he was a Mandalorian warrior, but he had also been scarred from his time fighting. She knew that he had nightmares about it and could never relax because of his past. It even affected how he treated other people at times.
But Bo-Katan didn't know that. No, she just heard stories about how war could bring glory to Mandalore. She believed all of that. She always had.
"It's… I don't want her…" He looked off in the direction that Bo-Katan had gone.
"I'll tell her I found out on my own," Satine said. He probably didn't want her to think that he had tattled on her, even though that was what he was doing. And it was what he should be doing despite what Bo-Katan might think.
"You really think she's going to believe that?" Obi-Wan asked.
"Just tell me what she's doing." Satine crossed her arms over her chest. "Now that my mother's passed away, I'm raising her." Even if Bo-Katan didn't consider her to be her mother and Satine didn't think she ever would. She would always just be her sister.
"Someone was the teaching her combat. Sparring mostly from what I could see. I wasn't there long."
Satine sighed and rolled her eyes. Typical Bo-Katan. "I don't know why she has to do that. I've signed her up for self-defense. Shouldn't that be enough for her?" She was probably practicing with blasters too. Satine wasn't stupid enough to think that wasn't the case.
"She's pretty good," Obi-Wan said. "And I think I could help her get better."
Now that Satine hadn't expected to hear. "Ben…" It had been a long time since she had called him this.
"It will give me a chance to get to know her better," Obi-Wan said. "I'm not going to teach her anything—"
"I don't want you to teach her anything that I wouldn't approve of," Satine said with a sigh, but this whole thing left a bad feeling in her stomach. She would never understand how Bo-Katan could be so different from her.
"So you will let me work with her?" Obi-Wan asked, his eyes lighting up.
"Yes, but I mean what I said. She's not your Jedi padawan. You're not going to take her into battles or do anything that puts her in danger."
"I won't, but this will help if she's ever in danger, Satine. You never know what might happen."
"She's not going to be in danger," Satine said, even though she knew that even she couldn't protect Bo-Katan from everything. But she wanted to. She wanted to protect both Bo-Katan and Korkie.
Really she wanted to protect all of Mandalore.
"Satine—"
"I mean it, Obi-Wan. She's not going to be in danger. Mandalore's not how it used to be," Satine said. "And she's my sister and I would never let anything happen to her."
Obi-Wan sighed and then nodded. "There's something else that I should probably tell you."
"What is it?" Satine asked, her stomach twisting. She just didn't like how Obi-Wan said that. It was bad enough Bo-Katan was going behind her back and learning combat. She was probably doing even more that Satine didn't know about.
Watching out for her was difficult. More so than she imagined. Her mother had told her that if she gave Bo-Katan to her then Satine would be able to concentrate on Mandalore, but then… well… when her mother had passed away Satine had to find a way to manage both and also Korkie.
And she had worried about Korkie and Bo-Katan even before. It was just so much worse now. And it felt like nothing she did for Bo-Katan was right.
"She was… do you know someone named Pre Vizsla? I think he said that he was a governor."
Satine frowned. She didn't know what she had been expecting, but that wasn't it. "Yes, he's the governor of Concordia. What does he have to do with Bo-Katan? Does this have to do with Bo-Katan?"
It couldn't because there was no reason that she would be around him.
"He was the one who was training Bo-Katan," Obi-Wan said.
Satine stared at him. Yes, that wasn't something that she had expected. She didn't think that Bo-Katan even knew Pre Vizsla. Satine didn't think she had introduced the two of them. Bo-Katan usually didn't like to be around politicians usually.
"Are you sure?" Satine asked, even though she knew that it was a stupid question.
"Yes, and he… well… I just…" Obi-Wan sighed.
"You just what?"
"Just parts of it seemed odd to me," Obi-Wan said.
"The whole thing sounds odd. He shouldn't be training Bo-Katan. He's one of my allies and I…" Satine almost said that she trusted him, but did she? Maybe to some extent, but this was strange. "What seemed odd about it specifically, though?" She wanted to know as much as she could about this. She just didn't like the idea of him being around her, especially since she hadn't known about it.
She didn't think she was being too paranoid and overprotective, right? He was a grown man and Bo-Katan was fifteen.
"He seemed… close with her and kept putting his hands on her shoulders and well… Maybe it's…" He didn't say anything. Obi-Wan probably thought he might be worrying about nothing, but Satine didn't know about it. And she wouldn't have given Bo-Katan permission for something like this. Vizsla should have thought to ask her, but he hadn't. It was like he was purposely going behind her back to get to Bo-Katan. And nothing good could come from that. "I just didn't like it, especially since you said you didn't know about it."
"That's…" Satine sighed and shook her head. She didn't want to think about this too much.
"I can keep an eye on her," Obi-Wan said. "I'm… I'm not going to leave Mandalore anytime soon." Satine imagined that the Jedi Order wouldn't be happy about that. She wondered if he had even spoken to them yet and told them what was going on.
They were sure to try and get him to go back and forget about Satine and Bo-Katan.
"Unless you want me to leave, Satine," Obi-Wan said.
"No, I… I think you should be here for now." It was better for Bo-Katan. She tried to tell herself that was the only reason that she wanted him here.
It was the only reason, right?
Obi-Wan nodded. "So do you want me to keep an eye on Bo-Katan?"
Satine sucked on her teeth for a moment. She knew what she had to do. "No, I'll talk to Bo-Katan about it. Sorry, Obi-Wan, but she'll know that you told me about Vizlsa and their sparring." She was going to try and make it not seem like a big deal. Maybe it wasn't a big deal.
But she wasn't about to let her keep being trained by Vizsla. She planned to talk to him about this too. Certainly he wouldn't be surprised that she didn't want him to train her teenage sister. It hardly seemed proper. He should know that.
"I understand, Satine," Obi-Wan said.
Satine nodded and hope that Bo-Katan would be the same way but she truly doubted it. This would probably just become another thing that Satine did that Bo didn't approve of. Another way that she didn't understand her.
"I can go with you to talk to her," Obi-Wan said. "You can mention to her that I can work with her instead of Vizsla and then maybe she'll be less angry."
"Maybe," Satine said, but since nothing she did was right with Bo right now, she doubted it would make much of a difference. "But you don't have to come with me."
"But I want to help you," Obi-Wan said.
"She's not going to be happy," Satine said. "She might not even want you to train her after this."
Obi-Wan's face fell. "I understand." He sighed and looked at the floor.
"I know you want her to like you," Satine said. She couldn't blame him, but Bo-Katan could be challenging even when her life wasn't being torn apart.
And that was what was happening now.
"I do want her to like me, and I want to be there," Obi-Wan said. He reached out as if he was going to take her hand but then he didn't. Of course, he wouldn't. She might want to pretend that he could move on from what she did but that wasn't going to happen.
He probably would always resent her. And she couldn't blame him. Their lives could be so different.
"Okay," Satine said. "Thank you."
But it turned out it didn't matter because when they went to Bo-Katan's room, she was gone.
