Satine felt lighter than she had in a long time. Maybe ever. Yes, Satine had obviously drank before. She was the duchess of Mandalore and it wasn't like her mother had ever been one of those anti-alcohol parents. She would let Satine have small drinks when she was younger and now she could drink as she chose to. Not that she did it that much.
But she had needed it. She kept thinking about little Bo-Katan. She must be so scared. Had her mother sent her away like Master Qui-Gon had suggested or had her mother kept her with her? Satine hoped that she sent her away, because then Bo-Katan would be safer, even if she would be scared.
She was so little still, but her age didn't matter to Satine. She would always be her baby sister no matter what.
Thinking about this now… It made her sad again.
"The town isn't far," Obi-Wan said. He staggered a bit. Obi-Wan was a light weight, which was hard for her to believe in some ways and in others not at all. The Jedi Order was strange. In some ways their students were sheltered but in others they had seen things that no one should have to.
"I can't believe… I can't believe…" Satine tried to say. She put her hand over her mouth and giggled.
"Can't believe what?" Obi-Wan asked as he stopped and looked at her. Stars, he had wonderful eyes. There was a lot about him that was wonderful. Like his face and his personality, which could be sweet despite his snarky comments. And despite that sometimes they argued. She almost liked arguing with him.
Was that weird?
"I can't believe you've never drank," Satine said, giggling even more. She wanted to touch him, but she stopped herself from doing that. She should try and be good. And besides, she knew that there was no way that a Jedi, even a Jedi padawan would like her.
She frowned at the thought.
"It's not… It was stupid. I should have before," Obi-Wan said.
"Really?" Satine stood on her tiptoes to try and get as tall as him. He wasn't actually that much taller than her. She had always been tall for her age. Though she hadn't gotten as tall as everyone thought she would.
And now she was probably done growing.
"Yeah, it's… it's different. The Galaxy is different," Obi-Wan said.
"Things are lighter," Satine said. She hadn't been this drunk before either. She could only think of the things her mother would have said if she had seen her. She would have lectured her saying that she was risking making a fool of herself and Mandalore and the government if she got too drunk. She could say something that she would regret. She could do something that she would regret.
But her mother had always wanted Satine to be perfect. Perfect little Satine. Even when Satine had been a little girl, she had told her that she had to make a big difference that she had to be important to Mandalore. That she had to be special. And then she had become a teenager and it had been even more so.
Satine loved her mother and she was glad that she was changing things. Mandalore needed change. Satine knew that and she was lucky she could help make those changes reality.
But she was still a teenager and there were times that she wished she could do things that other teenagers did.
And now she just wished that it wasn't her fault that her and her whole family were in danger.
Including little Bo-Katan. If she died… if she died… Satine would never be able to forgive herself. Ever.
"Satine," Obi-Wan said, dragging her name out. "Are you okay? Are you all right?"
She titled her head to the side and looked at him.
"Your face… you looked… off." She was surprised that he would have noticed. He was a Jedi so maybe that was why, but maybe it was more than that. Maybe he just got her. Was that a silly thing to think?
She couldn't be stupid. It didn't matter if she was drunk. She should be the smart, clever person that she was raised to be. Not let a boy distract her. Even if he was really attractive and sweet.
"I just… I'm okay," Satine said. "I just…"
"I know something that can cheer you up," Obi-Wan said and then he reached out and grabbed her hand. At first, she froze. She just couldn't believe it. She never thought that he would actually do that. She thought if anyone took the other's hand it would be her and then he would pull away and lecture her about how she was a friend, but that was all because the Jedi couldn't have attachments.
And then she would feel stupid.
But no, he had taken her hand and he was smiling at her. She felt… She couldn't help but smile back at him. It was probably nothing but what if she was wrong. That would be wonderful.
"There is something near the town," Obi-Wan said. "Lots of people go to see it in the day. I haven't gotten to see it close up because… well…" Because he was supposed to be protecting her.
"Really? I didn't think this town had any historical sights," Satine said, trying to remember. She was good at this usually. She had to be. You couldn't rule Mandalore and not know about the places in it. Still there was a lot that she had to remember especially since Mandalore was more than one world.
"It's not like that. It's different," Obi-Wan said.
"Different?" she asked.
"Yes." He nodded. "It's a surprise. I'll show you it." He pulled her forward, still holding her hand. Stars. Stars. Stars. She didn't care what he was taking her to see. She wanted to see it.
Normally she probably would have pulled away from him too. Yes, she wanted to hold hands and kiss him and… well… but she was a good Mandalorian girl and she knew that she wasn't supposed to be with a Jedi in anyway. That it would cause drama that they didn't need. But right now that didn't seem to matter.
Even when she hadn't been drinking, it often didn't, since her world had changed so much recently. It was as if she was a new person. Not the girl who went to political meetings. Not the girl even before she had been the Duchess of Mandalore who had been the star student and sometimes her mother had said that she was a wonderful daughter.
She wouldn't think that right now if she knew the kind of things that she was thinking.
But right now Satine had trouble even bringing herself to care.
So she didn't pull her hand away from Obi-Wan's. She even laced her fingers with him instead of the hold they had before. She worried he would pull away, but he didn't. He squeezed her hand and it made butterflies form in her stomach.
She smiled at them.
It didn't take them that much longer until they arrived at a statue… of a giant loth-cat. Satine looked at Obi-Wan, not sure if she was really seeing this.
"Why is there a statue of a loth-cat?" she asked, looking at it. Loth-cats didn't even live in Mandalore unless they were pets. And they weren't an easy pet to own. Though that hadn't stopped Satine from wanting one when she was younger.
Actually she still wanted a loth-cat now.
"I'm not entirely sure," Obi-Wan said. "I think I was told that someone had a large interest in them."
The statue was certainly large and then an idea came into Satine's head. She pulled her hand away from Obi-Wan and grinned at him. For a moment, his smile faltered. Was it because she had pulled away? Probably not.
"I have the best idea. The best idea ever," she said, just so he knew that she meant business. Normally she wouldn't talk like this. But normally she wouldn't have entertained such an idea because she always had to try and be a perfect version of herself.
And she wasn't going to do that right now.
She wanted to take her mind off everything that was going on and if she acted perfect there was no way that she would be able to do that.
"What should we do?" Obi-Wan staggered a bit to the side. She put her hand on his shoulder. She should have brought water. That way he wouldn't be as sick later.
"We can climb the loth-cat," Satine said. She pointed at it. "To the top!"
But then Obi-Wan staggered again.
"Or maybe it's not a good idea."
Satine knew that she could do it. She was good at climbing or she had been when she was little. Before her mother had gotten her to stop and convinced her that she needed to have more grown up hobbies.
So like when she was five.
Bo-Katan didn't know how lucky she was that their mother hadn't forced her to stop doing those things yet. Even if she didn't seem to like Bo-Katan as much at Satine. Satine cringed at the thought of that.
"It's a good idea. We can have the high ground," Obi-Wan said.
"But you're…" she giggled a bit. She was giggling a lot. That wasn't like her either. She always had to be serious. Everything was super serious in her world. No funny things for Satine. Not anymore. "You're drunk."
"I'm fine. I'm sober," Obi-Wan said. "And I can use the Force if we fall and catch us. I could use force jump but that's not fun."
Would he be able to do that like he was now?
"But…" He wasn't sober at all. He was probably worse than her and she knew that she was probably pretty bad.
But that was okay because she was used to it and she wanted to feel lighter. Not depressed and horrible like she had felt recently. The Duchess who couldn't help her people and who had to go into hiding. The Duchess who couldn't even help her own family.
"High ground!" Obi-Wan said and then he ran off to the statue. At first, Satine couldn't believe it and she had just stared at him. It was… well, how did she know what Obi-Wan was like when he was drunk? She had never seen him like this before.
She would have to go after him.
Obi-Wan was climbing well. Not looking like he was going to fall like she had been worried about.
"You're… you're doing good!" she yelled after him. Maybe she had been worried about nothing.
"High ground… high ground is important," Obi-Wan said as he kept climbing. For a moment, he paused and she worried he would fall, but then he kept climbing.
Usually Satine wasn't into jetpacks, but she wished she had one right now. Then she would be able to get them straight to the top.
But she had never had anything like that. Not even the toy ones when she had been a small girl. So now she was stuck climbing the way that people who weren't Mandalorians did.
But the two of them managed to make it to the top of the giant loth-cat. She grinned. The sight was beautiful. She thought that they would only be able to see trees, but you could see a bit of a river. And the stars were beautiful. Satine had been in space a decent amount of times, but there was still something special about this.
Maybe it was because of who was with her.
"The stars… They make you feel small," Satine said as she looked up at them. "But not in a bad way."
"Not in a bad way?" Obi-Wan asked.
"I mean… The Galaxy will just keep going on. It… We're…. I know I should think I'm important."
"You are important," Obi-Wan said. "You're—"
"The Duchess of Mandalore. I know." How could she forget? She was constantly reminded of what she had been. When she had become the duchess, her mother had been happier than Satine was. Satine… well… yes, part of her was happy, but she was more thinking about what she would have to do to help Mandalore. That was more important than anything else.
And now she wasn't even able to do that since she was stuck running from bounty hunters. Sometimes she wished that she could just go back to Sundari despite that.
But she knew that she would be killed.
"You're not just important because of that," Obi-Wan said.
She shrugged. That wasn't true. She was only important because she was the Duchess of Mandalore. Otherwise, she would have been normal.
"That's not—"
"It is true."
"Then how else am I important?" Satine asked softly. She wanted to hear this. She wanted to believe it herself. That being the ruler of Mandalore wasn't the only thing that mattered about her. That there was more that people could care about.
"You're—"
But Obi-Wan didn't get to finish, because some lights flicked on, blinding Satine and probably Obi-Wan too. They weren't alone.
And she didn't need to have the Force to know that this wasn't good.
