"How is this happening again!?" Potato Head shrieked one evening.
"Oh can it, spud head! Hamm said. We all knew this day was coming." The day Hamm was referring to was Bonnie leaving for college. The young girl they once knew had grown into a smart, gifted young woman who had been accepted to film school in Los Angeles studying screenwriting. She had spent the day packing up her old toys. Her childhood toys were being placed in the attic while the toys that Andy had given her were placed in another box to be donated to Sunnyside.
"Okay, yeah sure, we knew it was coming. What we didn't know is that we would be going back to Sunnyside!"
"Well we had another plan, but it fell through due to our kid passing away." Hamm snapped. All of them gasped.
"Alright, both of you knock it off this instant!" Buzz said, pulling them apart.
"Thank you, Buzz. Jessie said. Okay, look guys. I know the news about Andy affected all of us, but its been six months. I'm not saying we have to forget about him or that Andy won't forever be in our hearts. It just means the plan for him to come back one day and pass us onto his children is null and void. We have to move forward and go with the plan that Bonnie has for us now, which is to go back to Sunnyside."
"But what about Woody? Rex asked. Who's going to tell him?"
We're still going to try and find him right, to meet up him and Bo?" Mrs. Potato Head asked. Jessie looked at her. Of course she wanted to see her brother and Bo again, but what she didn't want to do is break the news to Woody that his boy, his Andy, was gone for good. She cleared her throat.
"Yes, we will still plan on that. But until we can figure out where exactly he is, we need to go to Sunnyside and continue to make kids happy. That is what we always have done, just as..." She stopped short, her voice caught in her throat. Clearing it, she spoke again. "Just as Woody would want us to do. He would tell us that it is our purpose to make a child happy, regardless if the child belonged to us or not. We learned that from him and we should honor that."
"Hear, hear!" Slinky said. The others agreed.
"Now, Dolly and the others wanted to say one final farewell to all of us before Bonnie leaves tomorrow morning. She said to meet out in the garden tonight and we'll have a small camp-out." The gang mumbled and went to talk amongst themselves. Jessie turned and walked away to the corner of the room.
"Hey, are you alright?" Buzz asked her.
"Yeah, sorry. She said. I do want to see him again, and join him and Bo liked we planned, but how am I supposed to tell him that Andy..."
"You don't have to. I'll break the news to him."
"Thank you, but how will we find him? He could be anywhere. We haven't even heard from him since we made the pact to meet up."
"We'll find him, Jess. In the meantime, it's like you said. For now, we stay at Sunnyside, making kids happy. It's what Woody would want us to do." She smiled and hugged him. He held her close and kissed her forehead. He thought about his best friend too and hoped that wherever he was, he was safe.
After a rough goodbye with Dolly and the others, Buzz and Andy's gang were boxed up and placed in Bonnie's car the next morning. Her mom had since retired from the daycare, but she knew of a friend that worked there that she could drop the box off to. She walked in the doors and smiled at the girl at the desk.
"Good morning, Mary." She said. The girl had jet black hair tied up in a single ponytail.
"Hey Bonnie. Are those the toys you are dropping off?" She asked.
"Yup. Please make sure they are well taken care of. They, they meant a lot to me and to their original owner."
"Don't worry, they will be taken care of. The kids love new toys." Bonnie smiled, hugged her friend, said goodbye to the toys one last time, and walked out. Mary took the box to the butterfly room and placed it on the counter.
"Hey, hey, new toys!" The Jack in the box cried. Jessie and the gang popped their heads out.
"More like old friends. Twitch said. It's Jessie's gang!" They helped them out of the box and onto the floor just as Ken and Barbie came in on the dump truck.
"Whoa, far out, you lot got donated again?" Ken asked.
"Yeah, Bonnie's off to college." Jessie said, gripping Bullseye.
"We're so sorry about Andy, Jess. Barbie said, hugging her. He was such a good kid. How are you all holding up?"
"It's still hard to believe. He was so young and was just about to propose to a special girl. It's so heartbreaking." Buzz wrapped her up in his arms
"It is. We lost a good kid." Buzz said.
"Well don't you fret, space ranger. Ken said. We'll make sure you guys are settled in and taken care of. Come on, I'll show you to your living quarters."
"Actually, Buzz, Jessie, can I talk to you two for a minute?" Barbie said.
"Of course, Babs." The others followed Ken while the three of them walked over to the dreamhouse. Barbie knocked on one of the windows.
"Hey Gigs, they're here." Giggle popped up, taking Buzz by surprise.
"Giggle? What, what are you doing here?" He asked.
"I'll tell that story in a minute, space ranger, but first, there's something we need to show you." Barbie led them down the row of shelves and stopped midway at a blue curtain.
"Do you remember that bad storm we had a few days back?" Barbie asked. Buzz and Jessie nodded. "Well Ken and I were surveying the playground, looking for any toys who got blown in during the storm. We found Giggle near a small ravine. She wasn't alone though. I need to warn you, he's in pretty bad shape." Jessie and Buzz looked at her, confused about who she was referring to. Pulling the small curtain aside, Barbie led them into what looked like a hospital room and pointed to the bed against the wall. Lying in it under a blanket, sound asleep, was Woody. Buzz gasped softly and Jessie swayed, almost passing out, but Buzz caught her.
"Yeah, that was my reaction too." Barbie said, placing Giggle on the end of the bed. "I'll leave you three alone." She walked out of the room and closed the curtain partly.
*Next chapter will answer why Woody and Giggle are at Sunnyside, as well as what happened to Andy.*
