Tecna followed Timmy to the ship and assisted him with getting it up and running. She had been on Red Fountain's ships several times before she attended Alfea's College for Fairies, so she knew the basics.
Codatorta messaged Tecna and Timmy while the rest of the group loaded up, "I am going to go ahead to check out the area. I will let you know when I have a plan. Keep an eye on the news periodically and stay safe."
At that moment, Helia stepped on the ship and said, "Headmaster Saladin called one of his old military friends and confirmed that your mom is in the dungeon. Saladin said that he didn't know why your mother was officially arrested. However, his friend is going to do some snooping and try to find out.
Tecna nodded and nervously played with her hair in an attempt to calm herself. No matter what the situation, she had to keep cool. She was a citizen of Zenith, for goodness' sake.
Tecna switched on the news alerts on her phone while Timmy handed her an earpiece. "Here, take one of these. This is how we communicate while on dangerous missions." He said, demonstrating how to properly place it in her ear without worrying that it would fall out. Then, he handed her a second piece, "And this is the microphone. Clip it on your shirt."
While she was distracted, Riven walked up and slapped her on the butt, "How's your marksmanship?" he asked. Riven then tossed Timmy his laser gun and waited for Tecna to answer the question.
Tecna didn't appreciate being touched, so she replied, "I don't know, but touch me again, and we'll find out."
Riven handed her a gun and walked away, "If I really wanted you, you wouldn't be able to keep your hands off of me."
"Doubtful," Tecna replied, turning back to Timmy, "Let's prepare for takeoff."
Once they were in the air, Sky looked over to Tecna. She was shaky and deep in thought. He walked up to her and placed his hands on her shoulders, "Cheer up, I'm sure everything is going to be okay."
…
A few hours later…
"Brandon, can you take over here so I can run to the bathroom?" Timmy asked a few hours into the trip.
"Sure," Brandon replied as he traded seats. Brandon looked over to Tecna and asked, "So what is your mom like? She must be amazing to have caught Codatorta's eye."
"She's beautiful, brave, kind, and loyal. Even if she had a relationship with Codatorta before King Cryos. I am positive she was faithful the entirety of their marriage. For years I thought Cryos was my father… I just don't understand how he could do this," she nearly whispered.
Brandon frowned and promised, "We'll do everything we can to help your mother."
Helia was bored from the long trip. He decided to turn on the news to see what was going on in Zenith. A breaking news banner flashed across the television screen, and Tecna's phone started to buzz. Tecna turned to the television to see what was going on. Her mother was walking up the stairs of an outdoor stage with her hands cuffed behind her back.
"Oh no," Tecna said as an executioner walked behind her.
King Cryos was in the center of the stage giving a speech.
"Countrymen, a great tragedy has befallen our country. We have evidence that leads us to believe that our beloved queen had an affair. But, as you know, this country of law and order. Therefore, I must announce that Queen Magnethia has been tried and sentenced for adultery with great sadness. Furthermore, if the man she dallied with ever shows his face in Zenith, he too will be killed on sight. Any last words, my dear?" Cryos asked.
Tecna gasped as her mother looked up and said, "I'm sorry, Tecna. I love you." Queen Magnethia was then forced to her knees. She then laid her head down on the wooden block and closed her eyes.
Timmy was drying his hands on a towel when he heard what was happening. He quickly ran up behind Tecna and covered her eyes as the executioner raised the ax over Queen Magnethia's head. A whooshing sound was heard as the ax cut through the air, and then it was done.
Helia quickly shut off the television and walked away, pressing the button on his shirt, "Professor Codatorta, turn around."
"What, why?" Codatorta asked.
"The queen is gone. Your daughter needs you now," Helia explained.
"I'll be right there. Be prepared to pull me in," Codatorta replied quietly.
Helia sensed his heartbreak but knew there was nothing that could be done. So, he walked back to the ship's central area and found Timmy carrying his cousin to her seat.
"She fainted," Timmy explained.
Helia bit his lip, for a Zenith citizen to show so much anguish, she must have loved her mother dearly. He watched as Timmy placed a cold compress on her head and recline her seat back. Brandon saw Codatorta parked in the distance and opened the ship's bottom, allowing him to come on board.
…
Back on Campus, Codatorta carried his daughter to her bed before meeting Saladin and the five boys in the common room, "What happened back there," Saladin asked.
"We were on our way there when there was a news alert on the TV. The King executed Queen Magnethia live on television."
Codatorta put his head in his hands, "And my daughter saw everything," it was more of a statement than a question.
Riven shook his head and replied, "Actually, Timmy was coming out of the bathroom at that time. I think he was able to cover her eyes before the ax came down."
Codatorta turned to Timmy to see if it was true, and he nodded. "Timmy, you have no idea how grateful I am that you shielded her from seeing that. Thank you," Codatorta said softly.
Timmy nodded and said, "No one should have to see something like that."
He thought back to the day he walked in on his mother's suicide. A few years after his mother lost her wings, she had a miscarriage. The depression over losing her child pushed her over the edge. He walked into her bedroom to show her his latest invention and found her hanging from the ceiling.
It has been a few years since her death, and he was able to forgive her for leaving him, but the image of her hanging there still haunts him to this day. Finally, Timmy stood up and said, "I'm going check on her."
…
Tecna slept through the rest of the day and woke up to find her clothes laid out on the bed. Although she didn't want to move, she needed to find out what happened after she fainted. So she went to turn on the TV only to see it was removed from her room. 'Strange,' she thought to herself.
She then heard a voice come from the balcony, "Codatorta removed the television temporarily. The execution is all over the news right now," Helia explained.
Tecna nodded, and he continued, "Go get dressed. I will bring you to breakfast with the guys."
Tecna did as she was told, hoping to find out funeral arrangements through one of them. Despite her curiosity, she knew better than to try to look it up on the internet.
…
The guys were all sitting at the table eating food ordered from a local restaurant in the school cafeteria since the school wasn't technically open yet.
"You look like shit," Riven said unapologetically.
Codatorta slapped him on the back of the head and handed Tecna a plate of food. Tecna tried to listen as they spoke, but she had a terrible headache. For the most part, they tried to keep the conversation around her lighthearted. Tecna wasn't very hungry, so she simply pushed her food around her plate, feigning her attention.
"Did you hear me, Tecna?" Codatorta asked.
"I'm sorry," Tecna said before asking, "Can I be excused?"
"Sure, but make sure you are ready to go in an hour. I am sending the boys to take you shopping while I try to find funeral arrangements. Unfortunately, we won't be able to attend since we would be arrested on sight. However, I would still like you to pick out some flowers for her. Headmistress Faragonda is attending and has agreed to deliver them for you," Codatorta explained.
Tecna nodded and walked back to her room. Now that she was finally alone, she allowed herself to cry.
…
Timmy was the first to come back from breakfast. He was about to enter his room when he heard sobbing on the other side of the door. Pausing for a moment, Timmy contemplated whether he should leave her alone or not. Ultimately, he decided to knock on the door.
Tecna quickly dried her tears and tried to make her voice sound as calm as possible, "Come in."
Timmy walked in and saw that she was trying to pretend that everything was okay. He sat next to her and handed her a handkerchief, "I lost my mother too. You don't have to hide that you're hurting." With that, the dam broke, and she started sobbing. He wrapped his arms around her and allowed her to cry into his shirt.
…
When the guys returned to the room, they found Timmy trying to distract Tecna with a videogame. She usually loved playing video games, but right now, she wasn't in the mood. However, she would have done anything to get her mind off her mom.
Brandon was the first to speak up, "Once you get to a save point, let us know. We still have to bring you shopping."
"I don't see why I have to go," Riven said, looking irritated.
"Because Cordatora gave an order, and it's our job to follow it," Sky answered simply.
Tecna paused the game and said, "Fine, let's get this over with."
"Your dad said to get anything you want," Helia added, handing her Codatorta's card.
Tecna nodded and followed them out the door.
"Do you mind if we take the wind riders to the mall?" Sky asked, "If you don't know how to ride one yet, I am sure Timmy wouldn't mind if you rode with him."
"Nope, I don't mind at all," Timmy confirmed.
….
As they pulled up to the mall, Tecna noticed some girls waiting out in front. She recognized them as girls from Alfea. Her eyes lit up when she saw her old roommate Musa standing among them. As soon as she took off her helmet, she ran to Musa.
"Hey Tecna, I am so sorry about your mom," she said softly, hugging her friend back.
"Well, it appears you have already met my girlfriend," Riven smirked.
Tecna looked at Musa in surprise and said, "And it appears you still have the same terrible taste in men you've always had."
Musa chuckled and replied, "What can I say? I can't resist a bad boy."
Sky then introduced, "Tecna, these are our girlfriends. I'm with Bloom. Brandon is dating Stella. Riven, as you've already discovered, is with Musa. And Helia is with Flora."
She noticed Timmy's name was left out and figured that was why she was allowed to ride on the back of his bike.
"And Timmy is still single, as always," Riven confirmed.
"Don't be mean," Musa scolded, "Now come on, Tecna, I heard you needed a whole new wardrobe."
"We're going to make you fabulous!" Stella screamed obnoxiously.
Tecna was hardly in the mood as she was dragged from store to store by the girls. Musa looked mildly amused as she wondered who looked more miserable, Tecna or the boys.
"So, what kind of clothes do you need?" Flora asked.
"Pretty much everything," Tecna answered, "All I brought with me from Zenith are the clothes on my back."
Stella's eyes got big as she started, "Okay, that means we need day clothes, nightclothes, workout clothes, date clothes, school clothes…"
"Yes, yes. I need it all," Tecna said, knowing she would have gone on and on like Forrest Gump.
While the girls looked at clothes, Timmy noticed Tecna seemed to attract lots of attention from shoppers around the mall. He looked over to Sky and asked, "Do you think people recognize her?"
Sky shrugged, "Possibly, but we can't say for sure. It could just be her unusual hair color that's making people stare."
"Maybe we should get her a pair of glasses and a hat?" Brandon suggested.
"You seriously think a hat is going to distract people from the fact that she is one of the most beautiful women you've ever laid eyes on?" Riven asked.
Timmy frowned. He knew that if Riven had set his sights on Tecna, he had no chance at all. Timmy was just a skinny clumsy nerd from the country. He had nothing to offer her.
The girls came out of the first store, each carrying a bag. "Find anything?" Helia asked Tecna.
Tecna nodded, "a pair of pajamas."
"Your girl here is seriously broken," Stella commented as she handed Brandon three giant bags. "There were sooo many cute clothes, and she just left with a pair of pajamas and some underwear," she added.
Tecna turned beet red as well as the rest of the guys. Sky was the first to recover and said, "Let's go on to the next store then."
As Tecna entered the second store, she saw a purple and green sleeveless shirt with a matching pair of sweatpants. "This is kind of cute," Tecna commented.
Musa came up and said, "I bet that would look amazing with your hair color. Musa saw a purple suit jacket in a similar color and handed it to her, "This would be cute with a pink skirt for school. Give me a second to go find a skirt and shirt that would match."
While she was gone, Tecna noticed a pair of black shorts and a t-shirt. On the next rack, there was a black hoodie. She grabbed all three and figured she could use these clothes when she had to go on nighttime missions.
Flora noticed that Tecna seemed to prefer purple and gathered some similar items, including some accessories to show her later. Ultimately, this trip ended up being much more successful than the previous one.
"How about we grab some lunch," Riven suggested as he saw the girls come out.
All of the girls nodded, except for Tecna, who silently followed. She wasn't hungry, but she didn't feel like shopping anymore.
Tecna ordered a smoothie, while everyone else ordered a meal from one restaurant or another. She figured it would be easy to hide that she didn't eat much through the Styrofoam cup.
As Tecna vaguely listened to the conversation going on in the group.
Timmy asked if she was feeling well. When she didn't respond, he placed his hand on her forehead.
She jumped from the touch, and he frowned, "Tecna, why didn't you say anything if you were sick." He stood up and grabbed her bags before whipping out his cellphone, "Professor Codatorta, is Nurse Willow in?"
Tecna heard mumbling on the other line, and Timmy continued, "In that case, I am going to make a quick trip to the drugstore and bring Tecna back to school. She has a slight fever." There was a bit more mumbling when Timmy concluded, "Okay, sounds great. See you then."
"Codatorta has access to the nurse's office and can get you some medicine. So let's go," Timmy explained to Tecna.
"But she's not done shopping," Stella argued.
Tecna raised her hand and said, "Actually, I think I am for today. Thanks, it was nice meeting you all."
Timmy placed her bags in the storage of his wind rider and told her to climb on first. "You look deathly pale. I don't want you to fall while we are riding," he explained.
She did as she was told and leaned on him for support as they slowly rode back to Red Fountain.
When they returned to Red Fountain, Timmy was surprised to see Codatorta and Nurse Willow standing there waiting. He climbed off the bike and grabbed her bags. To his surprise, when she climbed down, she started dry heaving and fell forward. Timmy immediately dropped the bags and helped her up.
"What's wrong with her?" Codatorta demanded.
Nurse Willow shook her head, "I won't know until I evaluate her. Bring her to my office."
Codatorta took Tecna from Timmy's arms and carried her away.
Timmy knew she was in good hands, so he grabbed her bags and carried them to her room before joining them in the nurse's office.
When he entered, Nurse Willow asked, "Timmy, has she been eating much lately?"
"She just had a smoothie with us for lunch, and she ate breakfast with us…" Timmy said slowly.
He then thought she barely touched her breakfast this morning, and he had no idea how much of her smoothie she drank. "Actually, I am not sure," he replied.
"Well, if she's eating, it might just be the stress getting to her. So for now, just keep an eye on her," Nurse Willow said, handing Timmy a bottle of fever reducer.
Timmy helped her back to Tecna room and into bed. She went to sleep almost instantly. Timmy suspected there was more to her illness than meets the eye, so he grabbed his laptop and started to research fairy illnesses.
Codatorta was good-hearted, but sometimes he failed to go into details, especially when he was worried. Timmy doubted he even mentioned to the nurse that she was a fairy. Then, as suspected, he came across an article that fit Tecna's problem almost perfectly.
'Fae Flu' is an illness that occurs when a fairy uses their magic too extensively. Symptoms can include Fever, Nausea, shortness of breath, pale complexion, and loss of appetite. Fairies who have lost their wings are especially at risk and have a harder time recovering due to reduced healing potential. Fae Flu' can be treated at home with rest but, if the fever reaches above 104, submerge the fairy in ice and call a doctor. Make sure the fairy doesn't use their powers until the fever has been gone for at least 24 hours.'
