Chapter 9: Blood

Nessie's POV

It all happened so quickly. I watched as my mother's cut bled. I looked back and saw that my father was already halfway out of his seat. His were pitch black with thirst. I hadn't warned my father about my mother's tempting blood.

The others reacted quickly. Emmett, Alice, and Rosalie got ahold of my father in time. "You don't want to do this. Remember how much you'll love her and how much you love your daughter," I heard Alice say. I was sure that my aunts words had an effect on my father because he didn't even try to resist when they pulled him away.

Bella, like the other humans in the cafeteria, seemed blissfully unaware of the danger they were just in. She laughed "Of course only I could cut myself like this with a plastic knife," she said jokingly as she wrapped a napkin around her cut to stop the bleeding.

"Here I have bandages," I gave her some Neosporin ointment and a bandaid.

"Thank you Nessie. You're a lifesaver,"

What an interesting choice of words. She didn't know just how close to death she'd actually just gotten. I looked at the table where my family had just been sitting and only Rosalie and Alice were back.

Interestingly enough Jasper wasn't there. Remembering my parents story about how Jasper tried to attack my mother on her 18th birthday I realized that it was a good thing that my uncle wasn't there.

It occured to me then just how close we'd been to accidentally exposing ourselves. I shuddered at the havoc that would wreak on the timeline. Then there was the Volturi. Shit. The Volturi. I hoped they didn't decide to make any unannounced visits while I was here.

"Are you alright Nessie? You look even more pale than I am," mom laughed.

"I'm fine mo-err Bella. Sort of. I don't think this food is agreeing with my stomach too much. I'll be right back,"

I was feeling a little sick to my stomach but it had nothing to do with the human food. I needed to get out of here and find somewhere private to calm my nerves down.

I ran straight to the nearest girl's bathroom and into the first empty stall I found. I just sat there and took a few deep breaths. A few minutes later I heard the door open. "Nessie are you in here?" it was my mother.

"Yeah I'm in here,"

"Are you okay? Maybe you should go see the nurse," she sounded very worried. I wondered why mom cared so much when she only just met me a few days ago.

"I'll be fine. The nausea is already passing," It was not even a lie. My nerves were steadily becoming calmer and I had a feeling my uncle had something to do with that.

A few minutes later the bell rang signaling the end of lunch. I emerged from the bathroom and went to the sink to wash my hands and my face.

"Are you sure you don't need to see the nurse? We can walk there together if you'd like,"

"Thanks but that is not necessary. I am already feeling so much better. It passed,"

"Are you sure?"

"Yes I'm sure. Let's just go to class,"

Our next class was biology. I was actually surprised to see that my dad was there. I was sure that he was going to ditch for the rest of the day.

There were only two open seats left. One by Mike Newton and the other one by my father. I took the one sitting next to Mike.

"Hi Nessie," Mike said very enthusiastically.

"Hi Mike," I said back to him.

I turned my attention back to my mother and father. My father was sitting unnaturally still. It looked like he wasn't breathing. Which he probably wasn't. His eyes were still black with thirst. He was probably concentrating very hard on not killing my mother.

Maybe it was a mistake allowing my mother to sit right next to him in this current state. Maybe I should've sat next to him instead.

"So how do you like it here in Forks so far?" Mike asked me.

"Oh I like. It's very different than what I'm used to. But different is good. It's different," damn I probably sounded stupid but oh well.

"Yeah I bet. It rains here more than any other place in the U.S," he said. "So Nessie I was wondering since you don't have many friends in town. I was wondering if maybe you'd like to hang out with me sometime? We could go have dinner or see a movie? What do you say?"

I smiled. It would be nice to have close friendships while I was here and Mike seemed alright. He was no Jacob but was the harm in hanging out with a friend? "Yeah I think that would be fun. Maybe we could get like a group thing going or something,"

Mike's face fell a little "Well I was thinking more of a one on one thing. Like a date?"

I sighed. "I'm sorry Mike but I'm not really dating material. But we could friends," I had to nip this in the bud before Mike got any ideas.

"Oh. Well okay," he looked defeated. Immediately I felt a little irritated. What was wrong with just being friends? Not every relationship with the opposite sex had to be a romantic one. Maybe if I told him I had a baby that would scare off any romantic notions of us he might already be forming in his head.

Just as I was about to say something Mike accidentally gave himself a paper cut and the smell of his blood hit me at full force.

The smell was easily the most tantalizing scent I had ever come across in all of my years. There was no other fragrance like it in the world. It was luring me in like fine brandy to an alcoholic. Like heroin to an addict. My own personal brand of heroin.

Never had a human's blood appealed to me so much before. My muscles locked into place. My throat was on fire. I'd never felt so thirsty before. The only way I would ever soothe the inferno was with this boy's blood.

"Paper cut," he waved his finger at me as if he were purposely teasing me with it. My thirst increased tenfold. I could do it right here right now. I could take him out right here and then get rid of the remaining witnesses afterwards. It would be easy. No one would be able to stop me.

No. What was left of my rational mind stopped me from going down that line of thinking. I couldn't kill all these innocent humans. If I could just hold out to the end of class.

So it was in agony that I sat through the next 40 minutes of class. Several times I came close to my breaking point. Just a little bit longer. Then I would soothe the flames with his delicious blood.

Then the bell rang. I turned to Mike and muttered the words that would make him follow. "Hey Mike do you mind coming with me somewhere a little more private for a few minutes?"

He smiled happily. "Of course," he said and began to follow me. Just a few more minutes and his blood would be mine.
