'Which one of them are you in love with?'

They've been having these quiet morning afters together for a while now. It wasn't a conscious action, not something they'd actively discussed and decided. Their pre-arranged, drunk dial and itch to scratch hook ups had continued sporadically, usually ending with one woman leaving the other sleeping before the sun came up to crawl back to her own bed, but then one morning they woke up together and it was…fine. Between the trophy hunting and their own respective personal and professional turmoil they'd hit a wall; they were both exhausted and had given in to the release sleep gave. And then the next time they'd done it again. And now they each have breakfast foods in their apartments instead of grabbing it on the go all the time. They're not a couple – that's absolutely not what this is – they're simply utilizing their time more efficiently and preserving their energy. They barely even talk in the mornings – they sit on opposite sides of the table, on their phones and tablets or reading the paper, answering emails, scanning evidence, sometimes doing the crossword on a slow day. This particular morning they're looking through the files of all escapees and recent releases from Arkham and Black Gate, trying to find a lead. They've literally been looking at the worst of Gotham society for the last hour so Sophie is more than a little confused by Renee's question. She looks up and across the table to find the other woman watching her with genuine interest and is baffled further.

'Huh?' Sophie asks.

'Batwoman or Ryan Wilder? Is it just the suit – I mean, you do have form – or is it the woman?'

'Renee I –' She's really not sure how to respond to this, not just because it's a potentially awkward conversation to be having with the woman she's been bedding for the past couple of months, but because she's spent so long locking down her deepest feelings that she's not even sure she knows them anymore.

'Oh come on, I told you before – the dance is unnecessary. Look I like you, Sophie; you're gorgeous and you're great in bed, and being around you doesn't make me feel like I want one of us to leave…But I know what this is and what it isn't. We both do. We both have another we'd choose first – I'm just not sure who yours is.'

Maybe she should have known by now that Renee doesn't really do awkward. That's kind of what makes them – makes this – function. It's why they both come back again and again. Isn't it?

'Does it matter?'

'I imagine it does to her. I suspect it's kind of vital.'

'I don't think it's even on her radar.'

Things between Sophie and Ryan – both in and out of the suit – had been strained at best recently; their once blossoming relationship held together simply by a mutual concern for Mary and the tireless effort to get her back. They're careful to never be alone together, they don't train with each other anymore, and mostly speak via Luke. They definitely don't talk feelings.

Renee laughs quietly, shaking her head. 'Moore, every lesbian in Gotham has you on their radar, including Batwoman AND Ryan Wilder. They're just waiting for you to make a choice.'

'And what if I want it all?'

'Every lesbian in Gotham?'

'Haha.'

Renee studies her, intensely enough to make Sophie lower her gaze to the files on the table. As with their sleepovers, the unspoken agreement to skim their truths comes naturally and though they're honest – sometimes brutally so – with each other, they never push too far. They seem to instinctually know what the other can take and what they're prepared to give.

Renee tilts her head playfully, tugging at the file Sophie isn't actually reading to get her to look up and meet her eyes. Sophie huffs, trying for exasperated but finds herself defeated by a raised eyebrow and lopsided grin.

'Well do you think you could settle for just me again tonight?'

'I suppose you'll do.'
