Together
Chapter 10
Christine had checked the mail on her way home from the market, and waited not so patiently for Mike to get home to open it. He had tested a few weeks before at the Police Academy, after meeting with her Uncle Jimmy. It was a rather thick envelope, but Christine didn't want to intrude, so she left it on the kitchen table and began dinner. Mike got home about seven, and immediately went in for a shower. By the time he was out of it, Christine had supper plated and the envelope sitting next to Mike's place at the table.
"That came for you today." Christine pointed out as she sat down next to him at the dinner table.
"Yeah. Its probably another rejection letter." Mike said as he took a bite of the chicken, grimaced, got up and grabbed a bottle of ketchup and poured a generous amount on his plate. Christine knew that she hadn't seasoned it very well. Cooking was a challenge.
"Uncle Jimmy said your scores were high." Christine remarked.
"Yeah, but it's the morals part. Because of who my family is; they don't want me to be a cop." Mike answered.
"That's just not right. Do you want me to open it?" Christine asked as she pointed at the envelope.
"It isn't going to make a difference which one of us opens it." Mike said as he slid the envelope over. He did have to admit, the envelope was thicker then the other rejection letters. She immediately opened it and scanned the cover sheet.
"Mike…you've been accepted." Christine said simply. Mike must have given her a look, because she handed him the letter. He read through it and realized that she was being honest.
"This was the fifth time I took the test." Mike said simply. Christine stood up and gave him a kiss on the lips.
"I'm so proud of you." Christine told him. He sat the letter down and pulled her onto his lap, as he kissed down her neck. She moaned in response. "Dinner?" Christine asked.
"I'll fix something later." Mike answered before standing up, all while carrying Christine to their bed and laying her down. Things would have to change. The money wouldn't be as plentiful and Christine would have to get a job. A baby would have to wait, and they would have to stay in the small apartment, but in the moment; none of that mattered.
It was much later before Mike fixed something of a better dinner. He served Christine breakfast in bed and laughed as she began eating the omelet. They had worked an appetite up and she liked his omelets. Instead of worrying about money and jobs, Mike concentrated on the beautiful young woman next to him, thankful she believed in him. He snuck another kiss and tickled behind her ear. She laughed in response and returned the kiss.
"I'll look for a job. You need to concentrate on school." Christine said as she ate.
"We will figure all that out tomorrow. I just want to enjoy tonight." Mike told her and she nodded.
"It is pretty enjoyable. Never thought I'd think so, but I do." Christine said. She sat the plate on the side table and climbed onto his lap in just the see-through nightgown Mike had bought her before their wedding.
"Oh, this nightgown." Mike said between kisses.
"Yeah." Christine said as she straddled him and pushed him to where he was laying down. She was glad that she growing more confident in expressing her needs and desires. It made everything easier.
