Shadows of the Past

Chapter 9

"It feels so good to be home." Mike commented as they laid in bed that night. Molly and Jacob were sleeping at the end of the bed in their cribs and Rebecca was in with the older girls, giving Mike and Christine a chance to be reacquainted both emotionally and physically. Christine smiled at him before kissing his chest.

"How long until you leave?" Christine asked.

"I am waiting on word from the President. I called in." Mike told her.

"I hope it's a while. And once you get the call, what happens to me and the kids?" Christine asked.

"I prefer you all being here. You're isolated. Dad can keep you safe." Mike said.

"I know I've not liked this place before, but I think we need to stay. Its grown on me." Christine remarked.

"Good." Mike said with a yawn. Christine leaned up and gave him another kiss.

"Let's get some sleep." Christine said. She sat up and put her nightgown back on before laying back down. Mike had also put his boxers back on, and checked on Molly and Jacob before laying down beside Christine. He fell asleep quickly, but Christine was remembering back years before.

"Mom and Dad want us to come for Christmas and I have the time off." Mike said one night after work.

"Will they let us sleep together now since we're married?" Christine asked.

"Didn't they the last time we were there?" Mike retorted.

"Yeah, but your mom was not happy. She hates that we're together." Christine remarked.

"She just needs a chance to get to know you better. That's why I thought going there for Christmas was a good idea. Did you have other plans?" Mike asked. He knew the answer.

"Well, no." Christine said.

"Chrissy; I am going home for Christmas, and I don't want you to be here alone. Mom extended the invitation to you. She knows you don't have anywhere else to go and she knows that you and I will be sharing a room and a bed. Its her way of accepting you into her family. Just give her a chance." Mike said. Christine was relenting.

"She hates me." Christine told him.

"No. She's protective of me, and she just wants to know that you love me and are committed to this relationship." Mike answered before giving Christine a kiss.

"I don't think I'll ever be good enough." Christine said.

"You already are. I choose you and my parents know it. You just have to accept it." Mike told her.

Christine smiled at the memory. She was thankful for the confidence Mike had had in her. She would have been lost without him. The one place she had dreaded going to, she wanted to stay at now. She couldn't imagine being anywhere else, and Mike had always loved the farm. He would be happy to come home. It was funny how life changed. Leave it to a stupid pandemic.
