Chapter 10: Love To Soothe
Back in the Underground, Papyrus gasped as he felt a sharp burst of magic and he felt the pain in it too. "My love," he said softly, realizing he was feeling her sadness and pain through their bond.
Sans noticed. "Pap, what is it?" He asked.
"It's Rebecca," the tall skeleton said. "I...I think she must have found something that hurt her, because she's feeling hurt and...," he paused before shuddering. "She's so angry."
"I sense it too," Grillby said. "Her magic smells sour."
The others looked worried. "What could have happened?" Toriel asked.
"Maybe she found the monster and tried to save it, but couldn't," Chara said softly.
"You mean she did the mercy kill Dad mentioned?" David asked.
"No, not if Papyrus is feeling your aunt's pain and anger and Grillby senses Rebecca's magic has a sour smell," Asgore said.
The babies all whimpered at feeling the mage's magic. Though it did not hurt them, it wasn't the warm feeling they were used to. Rebecca's magic felt cold and foreboding. Kano, who was holding Hope, gasped as he opened his eyes, having closed them to get a better idea of why his master's magic was off.
"She's very angry," he said, gently giving Hope to Carmen. "I'm going to go find her."
"Kano, no," Esther said in worry. "Those evil mages will hurt you."
"I agree with her, Kano," Sierra said, also worried.
The puppet gently placed a hand on Esther's shoulder. "I have to, little one," he said. "Your aunt saved me and gave me a second chance. Now it's my turn to repay that debt."
"But how will you get past the barrier?" Frisk asked. "No monster can without a human."
"Ah, but I was created by humans, Frisk," Kano said gently. "Therefore, the barrier's magic should have no effect on me." He gently ruffled the boy's hair. "But thank you for your concern."
"Kano, don't go," Julie begged him, hugging him.
"I must, Julie," he said gently, rubbing her back before looking at the children. "I need you all to be brave. Your aunt is going to need us all, providing I can get through to her in her anger."
"Be careful, Kano," Gaster said worriedly. "Hopefully Rebecca won't turn her wrath on you."
The puppet nodded and headed for the barrier, crossing past it safely before focusing on Rebecca's magic, finding it easily since it was quite abundant at the moment and the sour smell it gave off filled the air. "Master," he said softly before running towards the direction of the magic bursts that he could see, along with the smoke rising into the sky. He immediately knew the smoke wasn't from a normal fire because there was flashes of pink in it, a deep, dark pink.
Kano felt his heart nearly stop. If Rebecca's magic was a deep, dark pink, that meant she was focused on one thing that was making her very mad and she was most likely blinded by anger. Swallowing, he moved forward, soon finding Rebecca destroying another building and setting it on fire with her magic. The evil mages tried to stop her, but their magic reflected off of the dark-haired mage and some of the evil mages were laying around on the ground, injured and some of them burned.
Rebecca, whose hair was blowing in the wind and her eyes glowing fiercely, glared at the evil mages. "You'll pay for what you did!" She snarled. "You killed an innocent child!"
"No monster is innocent!" Someone said before a sharp cry rang out as Rebecca held up her staff and brought it down, causing a surge of magic to hit the evil mages.
"Evil, evil you are and always will be,
Now you can try to run and flee,
But the blood you have spilt marks your hands,
Now it is time! Eye for an eye, blood for blood on these lands!"
Kano felt fear fill him when he heard that horrible rhyme, seeing a massive lightning storm appear and the lightning shocked the evil mages, making them cry out as Rebecca didn't let up on her attacks, raising her staff high as she began to gently swing it in a circle.
"Your deeds cannot be forgotten with time,
I shall make you all like the mime,
Trapped to relive what you have done,
For your nightmares will now be more than one.
With this vow, I swear that you have gone too far,
Your evil magic has on this place created a mar,
Now pay the price for your deceit and greed,
For you will not see tomorrow, as that I've decreed."
Kano realized what his master was about to do. "No! Master, don't!" He cried out, running up to her and grabbing onto her staff, making her glare at him as the power pulsed through the air. "Master, please! Don't stoop to their level! If you do that, then you've become one of them and you swore you'd never be one of them!"
The magic cracked at the top of Rebecca's staff as she glared at him. "They killed Snow Mound! They are monsters!" She yelled.
"Please, Master! Stop! You're above this!" The puppet begged her.
"Get out of my way, Kano," she said firmly.
Seeing he had no other choice, he sighed, his hands glowing purple along with his eyes. "Time to stop, time to heal, stop in your tracks, allow her to listen," he said.
Instantly, time froze and Rebecca felt her attack dissipate, to which she glared at Kano, but saw him look at her with tear-filled eyes. "Master, please," he pleaded with her. "Listen to me. This is not what you stand for." He clasped his hands together in pleading. "Call out to Papyrus. You need him."
"You don't tell me what to do," she said firmly, her anger still present.
"No, I don't and I'm not," the puppet said. "I'm asking you, Master. I'm begging you. Please, call out to Papyrus."
Sighing, Rebecca closed her eyes and reached out her magic. "Papyrus?" She called out, though her voice was unsure.
Papyrus, feeling her magic and her calling his name, reached out with his own magic. "My love," he soothed, his magic touching hers through their bond. "Please, listen to Kano. I know you're upset, but please, calm down."
She took a deep breath and felt her anger melt away as tears filled her eyes and she began to cry, falling to her knees as she cried. "Master," Kano said, going up to her and hugging her.
She pulled him into a tight hug. "They killed him," she said softly. "He was so young, Kano, no older than our nephews."
"And they will pay for what they've done," he said. "But not like this. You are not like them. You are stronger, Master. You know how dangerous it is for you to rhyme with your magic. Don't stoop to their level."
Rebecca clung to his words as she cried harder. After a bit, she calmed down enough to where she could focus and Kano wiped away the last of her tears. "The final battle is coming very soon, Kano," she said.
"I know," he said softly.
Just then, they heard something and stood up, looking around before hearing the sound again. "What's that?" Rebecca asked.
Kano moved closer and found a door and when he tried it, it was locked. "Who's in there?" He asked.
"Help!"
The mage's head snapped up at that. "Snow Mound?" She called out.
"Mage of Light! You came!" The young Snow Drake said. "Please, help me! They have my soul locked away and have been using it!"
Kano looked at her. "You get his soul and I'll get him out," he said.
Nodding, Rebecca used her magic and soon found the young monster's soul and she was shocked to see it was missing a chunk of itself. It looked like someone had taken a bit of it and used it for something.
Realization hit the mage like a speeding train. The 'monster' had been created from the young child's soul, but because it wasn't complete, that was why it couldn't be controlled, why it went on a rampage and how she was able to save him the first time. "They copied his DNA and created their monsters," she said to herself.
Carefully, she picked up the white upside-down heart and cradled it in her palm before heading back to find Kano had gotten Snow Mound out of the room and the boy looked very sick. Carefully, Rebecca guided the heart back to him and the child looked relieved, but then fell to his knees, unable to really stand. The mage picked him up and wrapped him in her cloak. "Hold on, Snow Mound," she said gently before looking at Kano and nodding. "Let's get out of here."
They departed just as Kano's time spell undid itself and the building was burning, but the three didn't look back, knowing the evil mages would be coming soon.
Quite a twist, huh? :)
But yes, the evil mages were essentially 'breaking', for lack of a better word, Snow Mound's soul to create their monsters, which were unstable and thus it was easy for Rebecca to defeat the carbon copy. But it now looks like the tide has turned.
